Leeds United players have been back at Thorp Arch for pre-season training for less than two weeks but it seems like Marcelo Bielsa’s notorious training methods are getting to the players already. The Argentine coach is known as a perfectionist and it appears he has been pushing his players hard before the start of the new season as a number of them have been caught napping on Instagram. Midfielder Kalvin Phillips shared a video of one of his teammates passed out face first on a bean bag to his Instagram story earlier today. He wasn’t the only one, as defender Barry Douglas shared a video to his Instagram story of new signing Helder Costa out cold on some bean bags, just two days after the Portuguese winger joined the club. On Wednesday, Costa joined from Wolverhampton Wanderers on an initial one-year loan deal, which is set to become permanent next summer for an undisclosed fee. The 25-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the Whites beginning when the move becomes permanent, which would keep him at Elland Road until 2024. Leeds begin their season against Bristol City on Sunday 4th August, in 30 days time, and it appears Bielsa is set on working his players hard to get them ready for that. The Verdict Leeds fans will likely be pleased to see that Bielsa is working the players hard ahead of what is a huge season for the Whites. Following their play-off semi-final loss last season, expectation is high at Elland Road as Leeds are amongst the favourites to win promotion back to the Premier League next season. It has been 15 years since Leeds were relegated from the top-flight of English football and the players will be determined to make the most of what is a great opportunity and seal a return. The Instagram stories of Douglas and Phillips would suggest that the players appear to be in high spirits despite the expectation and the pre-season training, which is good news for fans of the Yorkshire club. #LeedsUnited #ThorpArch #BarryDouglas

Leeds United have been dealt with frustrating injury problems ahead of tomorrow night’s clash at Elland Road with Brentford, Marcelo Bielsa has revealed in his pre-match press conference. Liam Cooper and Barry Douglas, who have both been ever-presents in defence in the first three games of the season, are doubts ahead of Wednesday night’s encounter with the Bees, along with Gjanni Alioski. Bielsa has revealed that all three players are fit to play tomorrow night, but he wants the trio to be at full match fitness before throwing them into the side. But it looks as if the Argentine has already thought of a quick resolution for the Whites’ mini injury crisis, by revealing that Stuart Dallas, who has played at right-back in the early stages of this season, will move over to the left to replace Douglas. Bielsa says Shackleton will play at right-back and Dallas will move to left-back if Douglas/Alioski aren't available. Bielsa says all three injury doubts are fit enough to feature tomorrow – but he wants them to be 100 per cent. — Phil Hay (@PhilHay_) August 20, 2019 Jamie Shackleton, who was used an advanced midfielder in the play-offs last season, will fill in at right-back if Dallas moves over to the left, as Leeds look to claim their fourth win of the season in all competitions. Here, we take a look at Leeds fans’ reactions to this tactical update… Playing Berardi so he can break Jansson in two, smart — Matthew Mandziuk (@MMandziuk16) August 20, 2019 Anyone else fine with this ahaha — jake stevens (@jakestevens99__) August 20, 2019 Why play alioski yesterday if Douglas was a doubt? — Jay (@JaySnxwden) August 20, 2019 Somewhat relieved by the clarification. Phew! — Becca Richardson (@BeccaRi41043767) August 20, 2019 Does what he wants doesn’t he Bielsa. Not satisfied with naming start XI’s sometimes 48 hours before kick off, he’s now naming their potential replacements and their positions. — Dan (@danjmh) August 20, 2019 Still strong. What about cooper then? — Claudio (@claudiolufc) August 20, 2019 can’t play cooper then surely, not worth the risk of long term injury? — Love Shack Babyy👼🏼 (@RMaudsleyPhotos) August 20, 2019 That sounds reasonable 👍 — Dan (@DanP_LUFC) August 20, 2019 Bielsa playing games – there all fit — ASH (@Ashthebashx) August 20, 2019 Slightly worried that we are already struggling with knocks and injuries whilst still being in August. — Jack Hinchliff (@hinchliff_jack) August 20, 2019 #LeedsUnited #BarryDouglas #JamieShackleton

This article is part of Football League World’s ‘The Verdict’ series, which provides personal opinions from the FLW writers regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more… Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa will be satisfied with his side’s start to the season, having taken four points from a possible six in the Championship, whilst reaching the second round of the League Cup following a victory over Salford City. In the league it has been 29-year-old left-back Barry Douglas who has been given the nod to start by Bielsa, whilst in the League Cup it was Ezgjan Alioski who was promoted to the starting XI. So ahead of a trip to Wigan Athletic at the weekend, should Douglas retain his starting spot for league matches, or is it time to recall Alioski? We discuss…….. Toby Wilding “I think I’d probably be looking to bring Alioski back in. “It seems as though Douglas has struggled slightly to get back up to speed in that role, and Leeds will not want to leave themselves exposed in any position on the pitch as they push for promotion again this season. “With Alioski having played a significant role in that near-miss last season, it does seem as though bringing him back into the fold could be a boost for Leeds. “However, considering he has been out for some time with injury, Leeds may want to gradually manage his return to senior football, something they already seem to be doing, so Douglas’ time in the side may not be over just yet.” Louie Chandler “It’d be harsh to drop Douglas already. “Throughout last season, I was adamant that Alioski was the better suited option to Bielsa’s system and I predominantly still think that in fairness. “But, the former Wolves man has played pretty well in the opening two league games, however, if he does not start to add more at the other end of the pitch, I suspect Alioski could get the call. “The Macedonian was a constant threat down the left last season. Douglas has shown how good he can be in attack for Wolves and it is time he rediscovered that touch.” Josh Cole “Although Ezgjan Alioski showed some promising signs at full-back last season, I think that Bielsa should stick by Douglas during the current campaign. “Whereas the Scotland international failed to live up to expectations during his debut season at Elland Road due to a myriad of injury issues, there is no reason why he cannot bounce back for the Whites this year. “Unquestionably one of the best defensive players in the Championship on his day, Douglas will be confident that he can achieve promotion to the top-flight for the second time in three years having done so with Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2017. “However, if Douglas fails to stay fit, Alioski will be waiting in the wings to claim the full-back role as his own with teenager Leif Davis also keeping a close eye on proceedings having made a cameo role against Bristol City earlier this month.” #TheVerdict #LeedsUnited #BarryDouglas
