Two five-course guitars from the 17th century with somewhat rustic decorations and rosettes

A lyra

A fretted box zither

This small-bodied guitar survives as the rural Italian chitarra battente. Once strung with gut, it's now strung with wire.

The lyra dates back to the middle ages and probably comes from Turkey. It survives in Calabria, Crete, Turkey, and probably elsewhere.

Similar fretted zithers are still played across Europe. Scandinavians brought them to Appalachia, where they survive as the "Appalachian dulcimer."
