Buckle in kids, the Barnaby Brooks, Jr. Defense Squad is holding a meeting.
So I gave up on the argument with my BIL. Below is, essentially, the essay I wrote trying to explain why his particular opinion of Barnaby sucks. I decided not to send it because I realized that frankly, even if I'm right, it's not going to change his view, so it wasn't worth my time. Instead I figured I'd send it out into the void that is Tumblr to hopefully get some good faith interaction.
-My BIL's best friend watched the show specifically to understand our argument and said Barnaby "had no signs of mental illness, maybe just some trauma."
Bullshit.
Bro has at least an anxiety disorder and, given that I have one and that man is showing every single fucking trait I did before being diagnosed, I will die on that hill (I did also check the DSM for non-anecdotal evidence related to my specific disorder, and I'm pretty sure he meets the GAD criteria). Regardless, PTSD is, in fact, classed as a mental illness (specifically subclassified as a form of anxiety), and you can't watch the show and tell me he doesn't have PTSD.
-BIL's BF also said that Barnaby has a shitty, unlikeable personality with very little to redeem him through the end of Season 1.
Bullshit again.
There's literally a slow progression of him getting steadily better (both mentally and as a person) throughout all of season 1 and into season 2. I don't have time for a full watch through to rip small details, but you can literally watch Barnaby change in real fucking time. He's not the same person at the end of season 1 that he was at the beginning. Maybe its the hyperfixation talking, but I genuinely don't understand how you can watch the show and not catch the little, incremental ways he changes throughout season 1. And on that note--
-You don't have to like Barnaby's bitchy, shitty behavior in early Season 1. You literally aren't meant to. It is bitchy, shitty behavior, and it's stemming from unrecognized and/or unmanaged mental illness of some kind (even if it's only PTSD) in combination with Maverick's upbringing. It's an explanation, not an excuse, and it's realistic as shit. His support network is literally Maverick and Samantha. I'm not even gonna get into how much fuckery the Maverick component added to Barnaby's mental health, social skills, and general world view, cause I really should not have to. As for Samantha, I always got the vibe that they loved each other, but they rarely communicated, so he doesn't have much going for him there.
Why is this relevant?
Because Barnaby doesn't know how the fuck to deal with Kotetsu's shenanigans or his own issues, so he lashes out. Once he actually has and accepts a support network (Kotetsu), he starts to improve as a character. Wanna know why I clocked that? Cause I did The Exact Same Fucking Thing. I had 0 friends in high school because I was a constantly on edge due to unrecognized anxiety and PTSD (obviously at the time I had no idea why I was so angry all the time), which made me a reactive, short tempered bitch. I got better in college, and that was because I was in a different setting and around new people, which provided me the exposure I needed to realize "something might not be right here." The little support network I formed at college helped me learn how to manage, how to interact with people, and how to manage my reactiveness simply through exposure (i.e. I figured it out as we went and apologized when I fucked up, they were not expected to take any sort of responsibility). Recognition of my issues later led to going to therapy and getting a diagnosis. We are literally watching this happen with Barnaby. Season 1 is the first time in Barnaby's life that he has a significant influence outside of Maverick. We are literally watching that exact same growth over the course of the show.
-And that brings us to Barnaby's motivation, which I have another post on, so you can totes skip this paragraph if you want. Once he gets past the revenge arc Barnaby is literally just trying to do what makes him mentally okay. That's literally it. That's what everything he does from then on boils down to. Granted, it's not as obvious early on, but it's heavily implied at the end of season 1, it literally feeds the plot of The Rising, and he outright says that's what he's doing in season 2, and it's backed by his actions throughout. He's still helping people while doing it, so it's not like it's to other people's detriment, but he's prioritizing what he needs and what could make him happy. You gotta put on your oxygen mask before you can help others, and that's a hard but important lesson to learn when you're mentally ill. Prime example is that I had to end a friendship last week because her mental health issues were worsening mine, and she would not accept any form of boundaries. I wanted to be able to continue to support her, but you can't save someone if you're drowning. Additionally, I think it's hard for people to get what it's like for your only goal to be to feel okay without the context of being mentally ill for Literally as long as you've had memories (and I'm not even exaggerating there, pls don't ask about my childhood fear of toothpaste). Seeing that shit reflected on screen is Refreshing As Hell. Barnaby's not in it purely ~to help others~, or to avenge his parents, or for the sake of justice, or anything like that. Barnaby is Literally just a guy trying to find something that makes him happy, and is clinging tooth and nail to keep whatever he finds (namely, his partnership with Kotetsu).
-Basically, my view boils down to this: You don't have to like Barnaby as a character. You don't have to like his coping skills, or lack thereof. But Barnaby is a fantastic representation of what its like for some (key word SOME, I'm not gonna claim my experience to be universal) people dealing with long-term unrecognized mental illness. You can hate him, but when the show outright gives you all this context showing you Exactly why he acts the way he does, and then shows you how he makes an effort to change, you should at least consider it before just saying "he's an asshole and that's that." Also, recognize that if you can't see the representation he provides, He's Probably Not For Your Benefit (why yes, this IS another "importance of representation" post). It's so rare to get realistic portrayals of mental health in the media, and even less so with genuinely Good characters, so frankly, it enrages me when people just disregard the Mountain of context provided in favor of saying "oh, he's just an asshole" (looking at you, CA: Civil War era Tony Stark hate).

I feel like Badeea’s the only one who actually imagined what being a victim of the portrait curse would be like, beyond Beatrice being scared and alone. And she suggested it could be like coming to the point of questioning what was real and what wasn’t, and who was in charge of her thoughts and feelings. If it really was that bad, then I’d feel even worse for Bea 😰
That makes a lot of sense. If anyone would know about the possibilities of magical portraits, Badeea would. This is why Beatrice is firmly in my "protecc at all costs" folder alongside Barnaby. We don't know what she went through and it could very well have been that terrible, or even worse. Knowing that, how can I mind that she occasionally acts bratty? She's earned that if nothing else.
Now I really want to get a scene between those two, where Badeea actually asks Beatrice he she's doing and what it was like for her. I think Badeea is someone else who could really provide a level of grounding for Beatrice and act as a better example than Ismelda. Between her and Jae, Beatrice could have some positive influences in her life that she actually looks up to.

Year 3 Part 10- Defending
Hello, everyone.
Welcome back to another chapter. As we last left off, Barnaby officially joined David's side and we get to see some of the ramifications of that today. Wonder what poor Merula thinks of that XD
Elora Dunn I made a Hufflepuff in this version as opposed to Gryffindor. Seemed redundant with a character like Ben already in that house.
Also in this chapter I will feature a small cameo from Chester Davies. My character is a Gryffindor so of course we don't see him that much but I head cannoned him to show up at some point so I hope I did him justice. It is a small bit of filler in here today but as with everything in my story, it's all about the small details and development. Two more to go for Year 3! Enjoy!
If it were any other Slytherin, the new addition to the cursebreaking squad might have been quite awkward. With Barnaby the fit was so seamless, it was though he’d already known everyone for years. Despite his reputation as being one of the toughest kids in school with a penchant for dueling, winning him over revealed a key aspect of his character: that in reality he was just a big softie.
Barnaby loved to duel and learn new spells, his physical strength was immense (as evidenced by being able to lift Rowan off the ground using one hand with ease) and he was already quite tall for his age. But he also carried many other previously unknown attributes, the first of which was that he had a way with animals. He took particular interests in bowtruckles and nifflers, being the only person who knew how to tame them. Professor Kettleburn was so impressed, he made him a full time protege in handling more dangerous creatures such as hippogriffs and even the invisible thestrals.
He also loved to eat and would consume so much food in one sitting that one of the prefects at the Hufflepuff table actually had to ask him to save some for the first years. But above all else, Barnaby Lee at his core was a kind person and despite not being academically inclined, had a simple way of expressing things that put a problem into perspective. Perhaps most telling was that he never truly desired to hurt anyone and would defend those he cared about with vigor.
He explained all of this to Penny in Herbology, who giggled at some of the stories.
“Honestly, I’m actually really glad you introduced him to us the other night, even if he consumed half the food on the table,” she laughed. “I know most people think he’s slow, but he’s so sweet. Chiara went redder than a strawberry when he complimented her necklace.”
The aforementioned girl proceeded to flush the same color.
“I did not!” she protested.
David rolled his eyes as he tended to his dried nettles.
“That’s just because you girls think he’s handsome.”
Penny gave him a playful swat on the head.
“It is not...okay maybe a little.”
David clutched his hands together in a girly, romantic gesture and began speaking in a mock feminine tone.
“Oh Barnaby Lee, he’s ever so dreamy with his green eyes and enormous jaw!”
That earned him a triple swat, this time from Penny, Tonks, and Chiara.
“Focus on your dried nettles, dears!” Professor Sprout called out spotting the mischief from her place at the center of the table.
“Sorry, Professor!” David called out and he added some water to his pot.
“He’s handsome don’t get me wrong, but he’s not my type,” Tonks commented.
“What is your type?”
The pink haired witch shrugged.
“Don’t know really. Haven’t thought about it much.”
“I know Penny and Chiara have been thinking about Madam Puddifoot’s tea shop,” David joked as he falsely gagged, while ducking another swipe from a giggling Penny. “Anyway, the point is, Barnaby is a good bloke. And he’s dead useful to have around.”
“I’m surprised you of all people have accepted someone from Slytherin so readily,” Rowan teased him, coming up behind him to borrow some soil.
“Hey I’m a pretty easy going bloke, I can admit when I’m wrong.”
“Except when it comes to Slytherin apparently,” Tonks teased, which earned her a splat of dung on her robes.
Despite the jokes, the more David was able to get to know Barnaby the more he could feel his animosity slip away. In fact, he almost didn’t mind when the Slytherins became the favorites to win the Quidditch Cup after trouncing Hufflepuff 400-70, the key word being ‘almost’. But there was a practical side to it as well. Upon learning her former minion switched sides, Merula was beside herself with rage and began embarking on a campaign to make both of their lives as difficult as possible. Her taunting became subdued but she constantly attempted to blow up his cauldron in potions, put a flobberworm down the back of his pants, and tried hexing him on more than one occasion in the corridors. It was a mark of frustration; she was no closer to finding the vault but the constant attempts at sabotage began to wear thin.
“You need to learn how to properly defend yourself,” Barnaby told him one day after potions class, a session in which Merula caused the fire underneath his cauldron to flare, which singed off his eyebrows.
“I already know how to defend myself, I’ve beaten Merula in every proper duel we’ve had,” he argued keeping his head down, trying not to let passerbys witness his eyebrow less state.
“Most duels aren’t ‘proper’, Dave. Especially not if Merula is the one starting them. It’s better to be prepared for all kinds of ways people will try to attack you.”
“How come she leaves you alone?” he bemoaned.
“Oh, she doesn’t,” Barnaby admitted. “First she yelled at me and told me I was a traitor so I don’t sit with her anymore. Then she somehow snuck into my dorm and put bulbadox powder into my sheets. I was itching for days after that...”
“-that’s good to know-”
“But you still have a lot to learn. Especially defense.”
“Bill Weasley taught me a few things,” David offered.
“Did he?” Barnaby asked with wonder. “I’ve always heard the Weasley family loved the color orange. Don’t know much about their dueling, though.”
“Er right...well Bill’s definitely talented there’s no doubt about that. Perhaps we could work together on improving.”
Barnaby puffed up his chest with pride.
“If there’s one thing I know how to do, it’s how to fight and teach others how to do it. Also I’ve always wanted to duel a fifth year!”
“We’ll get a spar going soon, mate,” David promised. “In the meantime, I need Madam Pomfrey to regrow my bloody eyebrows.”
It turned out to be solid advice. Though his offensive prowess was high, especially for his age, it turned out the third year Gryffindor did not know much about spells that would protect him from harm as well as cause it. This became apparent when both Bill and Barnaby bested him by simply using shield charms to block whatever he cast. In an effort to improve and become more versatile, he began learning defensive strategies and the application of the shield charm itself. The burly Slytherin also warned him that Merula and Ismelda were constantly studying in the library and by the fireside in an effort to gain an edge when the inevitable rematch occurred.
With Merula Snyde, it’s more like a never ending rematch
However, what he didn’t know was all of this was about to come in handy in a most unexpected way.
----------------------------------------------------
It all happened quite suddenly and quite by accident.
On an average Saturday morning in early April, David was walking back from his brother’s room after another planning session with Tulip when he noticed Argus Filch prowling along the usual route past the Transfiguration classroom. Though he technically wasn’t doing anything wrong, he still didn't want the caretaker to cast a suspicious eye towards him anywhere near the secret location. So he took a detour through the gardens instead.
Inside the viaduct architecture, he was idly wondering to himself how close Rowan was to breaking the final bit of code inside his brother’s notebook (as well as how pretty Penny looked in her new jumper dress and spring boots) when he noticed something peculiar and also a bit disturbing. Over by the large tree where some the older students liked to hang out, he noticed five of them were standing over a smaller, terrified looking girl who was practically trembling with fear.
Part of himself told him that it wasn’t his business and it was best not to get involved. But the sense of justice, always strong in his persona, prevailed and he made an abrupt perpendicular cut across the grass and towards the commotion. As he drew closer he could hear the dialogue, which only served to feed his temper.
“...didn’t mean to. Please, I don’t want to fight.”
“Shoulda thought of that before you nosed into an area that you don’t belong in,” one of the lead bullies said harshly.
“B-but it’s not your area,” the little girl argued. “It’s for everyone who goes to Hogwarts!”
By now, David had a better look. The girl in question was a first year Hufflepuff who definitely fit the part of someone traditionally ‘uncool’. Thick glasses, short, copper colored brown hair, an oversized sweater to couple with several books clutched in her small hands. There were five who were currently bullying the poor first year, three boys and two girls, at least half of which were from Slytherin and the other two appeared to be Ravenclaw. The leader was a sixth year he recognized as Hadrian Flint, a member of a prominent family of the same name, a brown haired, freckle faced boy with poor teeth and an upward nose that reeked of arrogance. Also present was Ismelda Murk for some reason, who looked as though she happened upon the scene and was along for whatever kicks she could find.
“Just beat it, kid,” one of the Ravenclaws said. “This is our spot. Don’t make us do this the hard way.”
“And besides, Hogwarts doesn’t belong to people like you,” Flint told her nastily while his Slytherin companion nodded in agreement.
“And who would that be exactly?”
His unannounced presence caused Hadrian to spin around and face his challenger. His face immediately became a pronounced sneer.
“Get lost, Gryffindor. This doesn’t concern you.”
“Don’t be shy, Flint. Let the whole world know what you were about to say. I’m sure it will be most enlightening.”
Flint took a step forward but was soon informed by his companion who exactly this Gryffindor was with a whisper to the ear.
“Ahh...the cursebreaker. Well how bout I cut you a deal since I’m feeling right generous today. You go back to your curses and I’ll go back to this curse. Sound fair?”
“She didn’t have any idea this spot is where the older students hang out. Let her go.”
Though Hadrian was taller, David was not about to back down. He knew the reason he was picking on this poor girl and despite being outnumbered was not about to let her become the victim of a borderline torture session like Diana Blishwick the previous year.
“Mudbloods like her don’t deserve anything except learning their place,” Ismelda spoke now, a vicious gleam forming in her cold, gray eyes.
“Shut your hole, Izzy. I’m not even sure what you’re doing here but I do know that Merula’s boots need polishing. Give them some extra shine, will ya?”
Ismelda pulled out her wand in retaliation for the remark but Flint told her off in equally harsh fashion.
“Stow it you greasy giraffe neck. Honestly you could be Snape’s daughter with that hair.”
David might have laughed had the older Slytherin not been as equally reprehensible. The Ravenclaw girl and boy (which were evidently a couple) didn’t seem as perturbed anymore, but the rest of the group was hellbent on doing something awful to the muggle born Hufflepuff.
“Last chance. Leave or you suffer just as she does,” Flint told him menacingly. Again, David did not back down, instead he crossed over and put the much smaller girl behind him.
“Don’t make any sudden movements,” he told her. “And stay behind me. What’s your name?”
“Elora...Elora Dunn,” came the frightened reply.
“Well, Elora...brace yourself.”
He turned his attention back to Flint, Ismelda, and the other three students that were there. The Ravenclaws did nothing but the other two Slytherins withdrew their wands and Ismelda’s evil smirk grew wider.
“Have it your way then,” the tall Slytherin shrugged. “Immobilus! ”
“Protego! ”
It was his first attempt at using the spell in an actual battle and the results were quite effective. An invisible, reflective shield formed in front of himself and Elora Dunn, causing the spell to ricochet and deflect right back at its owner, freezing his body in place. Within seconds, Hadrian Flint toppled over in a heap on the grass.
It was a victory but a short lived one as the other two Slytherins readied their wands while David still guarded the first year girl. Given his narrow position and the fact that he was protecting someone else he doubted he could fend off two more opponents at the same time. Thankfully, it was not required as suddenly a prefect arrived at the scene, recognizing him to be Chester Davies, who was also head boy.
“Enough! You will stop this now!”
The Ravenclaw couple hadn’t drawn their wands in the first place, but Ismelda did not comply, sending a common cold hex towards David which missed, though the other Slytherin did heed the order.
“I said that’s enough! Five points from Slytherin!” Chester shouted, pointing directly at the third year Slytherin, who reluctantly relented, her pale expression now extremely sour.
“What in Merlin’s name is happening here?” he continued to inquire. “Dueling is forbidden.”
His gaze settled on David and he knew the time to explain was now. He had never interacted with Chester before though there was a chance he knew of his cursebreaking exploits. Either way it was best to act quickly.
“I didn’t start whatever you witnessed,” he told him. “Flint and his goons were attempting to harm Elora here.”
The first year Hufflepuff peeked out from behind his back at long last.
“It’s true. He defended me when I thought I was about to be hexed. They called me a uh…”
The poor thing, David thought sadly. She clearly had not heard that word used against her yet. Anger flared within him knowing it wouldn’t be the last.
He mouthed the word ‘mudblood’ to the Head Boy, who’s face reeled in horror. Chester Davies, known for his mellow, taciturn demeanor then unleashed quiet fury, first on the Ravenclaw couple.
“But we didn’t do anything!” the fifth year boy protested.
“You still threatened her,” Chester said coldly. “And by standing by and allowing the other three to do harm you have disgraced yourself.”
“The little brat wouldn’t leave!” the girl shouted back.
But that only served to further their scolding
“You claim to be part of our house and yet have the wit and foresight of a damp rag. I will be reporting this to Professor Flitwick and I will recommend detention for a week. Five points from Ravenclaw.”
Chester then took the time to reluctantly unfreeze Hadrian Flint, who immediately leapt to his feet and tried to spin a tale.
“You all saw it! He attacked me!”
“Stuff it, Flint,” the Ravenclaw immediately shut down. “I saw you cast the first spell and I know the word this one used to describe Miss Dunn,” she said, indicating Ismelda, who looked as though she wanted nothing more than to kill everyone present. “Rest assured, McGonagall will be informed as will Professor Snape.”
Furious and belligerent, Flint spat on the ground, uttering, “Blood traitor.”
David thought Chester might blow a gasket (he knew he would have) but instead he coolly regarded him as though he were simply another stone inside the Hogwarts walls.
“Better a blood traitor than what you are, Flint. Now get out of here.”
The tall, lanky Slytherin heeded her this time and shuffled away with his companion. Ismelda had seemingly skulked off as well.
“I’ll handle these two,” Chester told him, as he too ordered his housemates away. “You see to it that the first year gets back to the Hufflepuff common room. You did a good thing today.”
Admiration increased for the Head Boy as David nodded and looked over to Elora, giving a kind look.
“Come on, let’s go.”
As they walked back towards kitchens, he noticed Elora fidgeting as though she wanted to say something. Eventually, she mustered up the courage.
“Um...what’s your name?”
“David,” he replied simply.
“Thank you, David for saving me back there. I wish I was brave like you.”
He stopped just before they reached the barrels leading to the Hufflepuff common room and knelt down to make proper eye level contact with her.
“Elora, you’re already brave. At no point in time did you move when those gits asked you too. There wasn’t a braver person today in all of Hogwarts.”
She beamed so much David thought she might shed tears over the books she was carrying. Then, her face became puzzled.
“What was that name that girl called me?” came the innocent but horrifying question.
David sighed, he’d hoped it wouldn’t come to him having to explain something like that. But he wasn’t going to pull punches either. Someone like Elora needed to know the intentions of people such as Flint, Ismelda, and others.
“You come from a family with no magical background. Therefore some that do think you aren’t as good as they are,” he said sadly.
“But why?”
Therein lay the crux of the issue: why . Truth was, he could give many reasons why but none of them could adequately explain prejudice. It was something you lived through, but nothing about it was logical.
“It’s complicated,” came his reply. “Just know this: you are just as worthy to study magic as anyone else here. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise….also learning a few jinxes wouldn’t hurt either.”
“Can you teach me?”
Though he was a bit surprised, the innocent eyed look of this first year softened the dubiousness of his answer.
“Sure thing. We can find the time.”
Elora nodded and suddenly gave him a big hug, unexpectedly throwing off his balance.
“Ack! He...thanks kid.”
The first year tapped second barrel from the bottom in a distinct rhythm and skipped her way inside, but David didn’t immediately leave leave the area. He paused, willing himself not to drive himself into a fury over what just occurred.
Not all Slytherins are bad
Not all Slytherins are bad
David thought of Barnaby and how he was able to persuade him to change sides and the difference it made in his character. Or the eccentric Liz Tuttle helping him with potions ingredients. Then he thought of people like Ammon Lucian, Hadrian Flint, Ayla Yaxley, and Ismelda Murk and the pit of black vengeance returned, bubbling like tar ready to consume all who became entrapped in it.
As if to punctuate the conflict, Merula Snyde popped into his mind as did Liz Tuttle’s words regarding her
“Merula’s not all bad…well she’s mostly bad. But I know for a fact she’s had a hard life and she’s not always what she seems.”
He shook his head. What did she mean by that? He knew Merula’s parents were locked up in Azkaban but by all accounts she lived like a queen in Hertfordshire in the Snyde Manor. At no point in time had she ever apologized or bothered to show there was anything lurking beneath except vicious arrogance and deceit.
So why was there pain in her lavender eyes every time he beat her in a duel? Why was she so obsessed? What was it about him and his brother that Merula couldn’t let go?
David pushed those thoughts aside for now, having little time or patience to figure out the psychological ramifications of the house of snakes. There was homework to finish and another vault to find and break its curse.
If it took a few Slytherins, whether enemies or friends, to get there he would do so.
-----------------------------------------
David never expected much to come of his deeds the previous Saturday. As far as he was concerned, the act of aiding Elora suited him just fine. They’d even scheduled a time to meet where he could show her a few spells. Come Monday, however, that changed.
While at breakfast with Ben, Charlie, and Jae (the latter of whom was chugging multiple goblets of milk on a bet) he was called to the head table by Professor McGonagall.
“David Grant!” she called out. “Please step forward.”
By this time, he temporarily forgot about what had happened and assumed whatever his head of house wanted was nothing good. Usually when they talked outside of class it was due to some trouble he’d been up to or the cursed vaults...oftentimes both.
“Yes, Professor?” he asked as he reached her place at the faculty chair.
“It has come to my attention that you were involved in an altercation last weekend involving a first year student and five others.”
David felt his heart quicken. Was she really about to punish him for doing the right thing?
“Yes...I was.”
But he need not have worried, for in the next moment she gave him a rare smile.
“Do not worry yourself, Mr. Grant. I know you were attempting to protect Miss Dunn from those who sought to make her feel unwelcome and unwanted.”
Her nostrils flared showing a subtle moment of anger before it vanished and she continued.
“Your actions are to be commended. Twenty points to Gryffindor for your courage and defense of those younger than yourself.”
Fear instantly turned to immense happiness as he reciprocated the smile.
“Thank you, Professor.”
“You are welcome. And do tell Mr. Kim that he will likely vomit if he continues in his high consumption of milk. I do not want a mess in the Great Hall nor in my classroom when it occurs today.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“I expect nothing less from one of my best Transfiguration students.”
He was sent on his way feeling considerably proud of himself for getting the normally strict and reserved Professor McGonagall to show not only a positive emotion but pride in him. And there was more yet to come. Before he could retake his seat, another familiar face confronted him, this time in the person of Angelica Cole.
“I heard what happened as well, David.”
“In case you were wondering, I earned twenty house points out of it so by your standards I should be showered with roses, am I right?”
Angelica rolled her eyes but her mouth twisted upwards in a smile all the same.
“Incorrigible as ever. But I want to echo McGonagall’s sentiments. Chester told me everything and what you did is precisely what our house is supposed to entail: courage, protecting those who cannot protect themselves.”
She paused before continuing.
“When we first met I thought you were going to be another troublemaker. But I was wrong. And I want to apologize.”
David was surprised, not necessarily by the apology (he and Angelica had gotten on fine this year) but the sentiment she was showing. There was a heavy amount of emotion in her eyes and an acute sense of something bigger at stake.
“Angelica, are you alright?”
“Do you know why I’m saying these things?” she asked him point blank.
“Because I’m just so naturally charming?”
“Because I’m leaving,” Angelica corrected, ignoring his joke. “I have less than two months left at Hogwarts before I graduate. And whether you realize it or not, you’re rising in seniority. David, I want you to take my place after I’m gone.”
He blinked a couple of times, hardly daring to believe his ears.
“I’m sorry, what?”
“I know it isn’t coming for at least two more years. But before I leave Hogwarts I’m going to recommend to Professor McGonagall that you be made prefect when your time comes. Through everything there is a quality you have that stands out: leadership.”
David couldn’t help but remain shocked at the ringing endorsement but there it was. He had gone from pain in the arse to leadership material in the span of two years. Nevertheless, he thanked his prefect sincerely.
“Angelica...this means a great deal. I can’t thank you enough.”
“Thank yourself,” she said smiling. “I told you at the beginning of the year that you were worth more than wisecracks and being Jacob Grant’s younger brother. You’ve earned that distinction and much more.”
The conversation ended as the seventh year was forced to quell a potential food fight at the end of the Gryffindor table and David rejoined his group but with positive thoughts to enjoy for once.
“What happened with McGonagall and Angelica?” Charlie asked. “You certainly seem pleased.”
“I dunno mate, they’ve appeared to take a liking to me all of a sudden.”
“Everyone likes you, Dave,” Ben reminded him.
“Thank you for the vote of confidence, Ben. But even my popularity has limitations. In particular with a brown haired, deriding, boot wearing, Slytherin girl.”
“Wouldn’t worry about her so much,” Jae replied, by now having stopped chugging milk though he still sported a white mustache as a result. “She ain’t exactly popular among her own house anymore. Most people find her insulting and cruel.”
“She can sit on a pin for all I care,” David shrugged. “Maybe I’m just becoming a little more mature.”
“That’s hilarious,” Charlie laughed.
“So is your bloody snoring even though it keeps me up at night.”
They continued to banter like this for the rest of breakfast when Rowan happened on the scene and right away everyone could tell he had stumbled upon something quite important just by the look in his eye.
“Rowan, you’re just in time to see whether or not Jae can light a fire from his wand with a fart."
But the joke either didn’t register or it paled in comparison to the news
“I need to speak to you,” he said directly to David. “Alone.”
Shrugging but also silently recognizing that something big was going on he played it off as though it were nothing to avoid arousing suspicion.
“Alright then. Lead the way.”
As careful and inconspicuously as they could, Rowan and David exited the Great Hall and into a private column within the corridor. Upon making sure no one was watching, the former of the two boys pulled out a familiar, leatherback, brown notebook.
“I did it,” he whispered. “I finally managed to match the half page to another message in the book and decipher it.”
This was indeed wonderful news and David could hardly wait to hear it. Excitement pulsed through his veins, barely being able to contain it.
“Rowan that’s amazing! Go on! What does it day?”
Proudly and pompously flipping to the correct page, Rowan read the information aloud but also in a hushed tone so no one would hear them.
“‘The entrance is the Restricted Section of the library. That is the source of the fear and the vault itself.’ ”
David ran a hand through his hair, ecstatic but also mentally kicking himself. Of all the places they looked, the one place they forgot was the restricted section?
“I know that look,” Rowan told him seriously. “Don’t beat yourself up. None of us here had any idea where the entrance was, even with your brother’s notes. But it doesn’t matter now.”
Drive and passion drove David to new levels of happiness and determination. They had managed to navigate through all manner of blockages, dead ends, and run arounds only to finally come through in the end. They knew where the vault was and now it was time.
“Time to break into this latest cursed vault,” he spoke aloud.

The End of the Mystery: Part 5 - The Battle by the Burning Pitch
Summary: The gang hold off Voldemort’s army as they try to enter through the Quidditch Gate but it’ll take a lot to discourage the Hogwarts Mystery Gang!
Notes: I wrote the battle scene in one part initially but it got too long so I split it up into two parts, here’s the first. It paces a lot better now.
A soft breeze blew through the cold night sky, the blades of grass swayed peacefully on the ground. The flaming remains of the quidditch pitch in the distance crackled quietly outside the barrier. The blue flashes of the shield decorated the sky above as the evil army bombarded it with spells. The orange and silvery blue hue from the quidditch pitch and shield illuminated the restless figures pacing on the outskirts of the protection.
"That's a lot of snatchers..." Ben gulped softly, his forehead shone with sweat. He stood behind Bill, fidgeting with his wand. The ginger curse breaker stood tall, scanning the land around them.
"We got some of Sprout's defenses scattered around, Andre's flight team and a few students back by the wall. If we keep them in front of us, we won't get overwhelmed" He spoke out loud to the group around him, their gaze fixated on the large group of attackers in front of them. Bill looked around at the empty stares of his friends and the students that volunteered to fight. "Guys it'll be okay. Just...watch each other's backs and stay sharp." He took in a deep breath. "We can do this..." Fleur took his hand, squeezing it softly as he looked down at her. He forced a sheepish smile through his worried face.
"It's pretty..." Tulip looked at the alight quidditch pitch, the radiating fire danced and swirled against the thick black smoke that filled the night sky. "Yet sad..." she whispered, Penny looked from her to the quidditch pitch.
"It is" She spoke softly. "Remember the final match between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw in fifth year? Charlie almost had the snitch when a bludger broke his broom, he crashed right into the Slytherin stands" Y/N nodded.
"He landed right on Merula, she would have hexed him if his leg wasn't broken" They smiled warmly and shook their head, remembering how impulsive their rival was.
"He was bed ridden for days" Penny spoke again, everyone's gaze still fixated on the forces ahead. "Madam Pomfrey was kind enough to let us stay with him for one night. We ate sweets and listened to the radio all night." The hufflepuff blonde giggled softly. "Bill never left his side"
"Of course. He's my brother, I'd do anything for Charlie" The curse breaker spoke, his voice low but stern. Y/N looked up, the faint twinkling of stars scattered the Scottish sky. Their eyes glittered from the flashes of the spells trying to break down the shield.
"Jacob" Memories of their absent brother flashed through their mind. Every year at Hogwarts. The mystery of the cursed vaults. The mystery of Jacob. Time spent trying to find him, to be with him. Long abandoned. "Where are you?" The question ringed through their head, the same question they've asked every day. A thud nearby and the sound of footsteps brought Y/N back to reality. Andre walked over to Bill, broom in hand.
"We got snatchers and death eaters, we knew that, but I also saw a few giants. We're in for a fight Bill" the Ravenclaw seeker reported.
"Giants?!" Ben exclaimed, his face filled with nervousness.
"They're not that tough" Tulip stated, trying to comfort the cowardly Gryffindor. Suddenly a loud crack rang through the air, echoing in their ears. A bright explosion filled the sky as the shield cracked and shattered. Glowing dust floated down before disappearing completely. The gang looked up in surprise before looking back to the evil army in front of them. They watched as one of the snatchers creeped towards them, wary about coming closer. After a few steps, he looked back to his fellow allies. They all started to grin madly and loud howls and laughs resonated through the air. With a loud cry, the army started charging towards the gate, running past the quidditch pitch. The fire illuminating their crazy eyes.
"This is it everyone. It's going to be tough but I know you can do it. You're some of the bravest and most talented wizards and witches I know, and together we can do this." The group watched as a couple of snatchers got trapped in devil's snare, pinning them to the ground. The army continued charging. "Keep them in front of you, take them out hard and fast. Watch each other's back and remember what you're fighting for. We fight for Dumbledore, we fight for Harry, we fight for our school" Bill stood tall as he drew his wand, brandishing the weapon to his side. Rowan straightened the glasses on their face, their wand poised and ready. Ben hunched down, holding his wand tightly, as he readied himself for the fight ahead. Barnaby tucked Barnaby Junior down into his pocket and he readied his wand, remembering his effective dueling stance. Andre mounted his broom, hovering a few feet above the ground, his wand in hand. Tulip cracked her knuckles, a wild smirk on her face. Penny moved the goggles on her forehead down over her eyes. The black lenses shone from the fiery landscape. She confidently smiled as she wielded her wand in one hand and a potion in the other. Y/N raised their wand, the tip pointing upwards as they readied their other hand in front of them, prepared to cast against the dark forces. Fleur equipped her wand and stood by her ginger husband.
"Wonderful speech, my love" She whispered to him.
"Thank you dear, I practiced it on the way over" He flashed her a cheeky smile before returning his gaze to the charging force in front of him. He raised his wand. "FOR HOGWARTS!"
"FOR HOGWARTS!" His friends and the students around him cried out as they charged forwards. Andre swiftly shot into the air, followed by four students, joining the charge from above. As the two opposing forces ran at each other, spells flew overhead as the onslaught began. The wizards and witches deflected and shielded themselves from incoming spells as they continued to run. With a roar the two groups collided. Bill rushed forwards to the snatcher in front, punching him square in the face before shooting spells at the others behind him.
"Petrificus Totalus!" Fleur bonded the knocked down man before he could get up. She quickly cast protego as a hex flew towards her, Bill turned and quickly disarmed her attacker with a quick expelliarmus. The married couple swiftly stood back to back and continued to fend off the attackers. Ben scanned the battlefield as the wizards and witches clashed. His hand shook in fear. Suddenly a flash of light burst towards him. The scared man quickly flicked his wand as he deflected the incoming spell.
"Argh!" Ben fell over as another spell whizzed past his head. The blonde Gryffindor coughed as the wind was knocked out of him. A death eater apparated next to him, his wand pointed at him. "Oh Merlin!" Just as the death eater was about to flick his wand, he was knocked off his feet as the ground beneath him exploded. Ben looked up and saw the Pride of Portee emblem swooping past him. Andre scanned the skirmish below him, duels occurring all over the battlefield, he quickly spotted a large cluster of snatchers.
"Large group. 3 o'clock!" He called out behind him. Two students flew behind him as they dove down towards the crowd. The snatchers below were laughing and firing curses, pinning down a couple of students. "Confringo!" The gang of snatchers were blown aside as Andre and his team bombarded the ground beneath them. Dirt and stone flew up into the air as the curses made contact, cries of anguish ringed through the air as some of the opposing forces were weakened.
"Yeah! Go Andre!" Tulip whooped from below as Andre and his squad continued their bombing runs.
"Avada Kedavra!" The red-headed Ravenclaw quickly rolled out of the way as the killing curse flew past her. She quickly located the source of the spell and pointed her wand at the enraged death eater.
"Stupefy!" With a flash of blue the attacker was knocked over, an audible groan escaped his mouth as he hit the ground.
"Expelliarmus!" Tulip's wand flew out of her hand and onto the ground nearby. She turned to see another death eater, their wand pointed at her. "Hello girlie" The red-head gulped as a cheeky grin formed on the man's face.
"TULIP!" The two of them turned in time to see Y/N roll onto Tulip's wand, grabbing it in their other hand before rolling into a crouched position. They stopped with their wand and Tulip's wand pointed at the death eater. "Depulso!" With a large flash of red, the enemy flew through the air and into two snatchers, who were caught off guard. Y/N ran over to Tulip, quickly throwing her wand to her.
"Thanks Y/N"
"Don't mention it"
"Whoa!" The two were quickly interrupted as they saw Rowan's wand fly through the air. The bookworm seemed to be facing off against a snatcher who had just disarmed them. Before Y/N, Tulip or the snatcher could react, Rowan flicked their hand towards their enemy.
"Flipendo!" With a bang, the snatcher flew backwards, thudding to the ground. Tulip quickly ran over and kicked their wand from their hand, while they lay still on the ground.
"Wow Rowan that was amazing!" Y/N complimented.
"Being at Uagadou has taught me a thing or two, including casting without my wand" Rowan flashed Y/N a grin as they were handed their wand back. Meanwhile, Penny held up the head of a fallen student as she poured a green liquid into his mouth. The student began to stir as the Wiggenweld potion took affect.
"Get him back to the gates, you two can join the defense from back there" another boy quickly supported the injured one as they limped back towards the castle. Penny replenished her belt as a group of snatchers spotted her. She scanned them through her dark goggles. They cackled loudly as they surrounded her, their wands aimed at the blonde Hufflepuff who stood confidently. With a whoosh from above, three vials fell from the sky, smashing either onto the ground nearby or onto the snatchers. A dark purple smoke began to fill the area as Penny'a adversaries began to panic.
"Night night" The blonde potioneer brought a handkerchief up to her mouth and nose as she gave a small wave to one of the snatchers. Their eyelids quickly closed as they fell over, their bodies lying scattered on the ground, a deep sleep falling over them all. Penny looked up at Andre and the students behind him, giving him a thumbs up. He returned the gesture before flying off again.
"Hey!" Penny turned to see another snatcher, one who was much larger than the others. He held a snapped wand in his wand which he angrily threw to one side. He was quite muscular, his bald head shone slightly as he cracked his knuckles. "Those were my friends!" With a cry of fury, he began running towards the pretty Hufflepuff. Penny smirked. She drew out a turquoise potion from her belt. She popped off the cap and quickly drank the brew. Wiping her mouth, the potioneer felt a burning sensation in her muscles. With a look of determination, Penny began running head first towards the large snatcher. They stared daggers at each other as they charged closer and closer and closer. In one swift move, Penny jumped up, her fist connecting with the snatcher's lower jaw. With a groan, the big man flew backwards in the air and landed with a thud, a few feet away. The Hufflepuff landed gracefully, a cheeky smirk on her face as she blew her knuckle. She looked to the side where a few snatchers stared at her in fear.
"Boo" With a yelp they ran away, almost tripping over each other. Penny smiled confidently before she dived back into the fight. Unbeknownst to the defenders of Hogwarts, a large figure stomped onto the battlefield. The large creature huffed, its hot breath hung in the air. Two death eaters, a man and a woman, stood confidently in front of the creature. They smirked evilly at the fight before them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The fire crackled quietly as the fireplace barely lit the dim room. Tonks sat in the comfy chair by the fire, holding her infant son. Little babbles from Teddy made the metamorphmagus look down, she smiled softly and bounced him lightly. Her gaze returned to the orange blaze, the light illuminated her eyes. She felt warm with the wood burning in front of her, the blanket over her lap and the small infant in her arms. She stared off into the distance, out the window, looking at the bright moon that shone in the dark night sky. Her mind was miles away. Thoughts flashed through her head.
“The battle would’ve started by now” She couldn’t stop herself from thinking of all the ways her dear beloved husband could die. “He could be crushed. Or cursed. Or...or...” A loud snap ringed through her ears as the wood in the fireplace was cracked by the heat. She looked down at her small child again who looked up at her with big curious eyes.
“I’m sorry Teddy”
Premier League Fans’ Verdicts: Bernardo Silva should win Player of the Year
The Premier League continued this weekend with Liverpool beating Cardiff to stay ahead of Manchester City, who were victorious about Tottenham.
Elsewhere Manchester United and Arsenal's hopes of finishing in the top four were hit by defeats.
Here, Sportsmail gets the fans' verdicts following the latest round of action …
Liverpool fans were informed as their team beat Cardiff to return to the top of the table
MANCHESTER CITY
Steven Allweis (View From A Blue)
All the talk has been around Sterling competing with Van Dijk to be named Player Of The Year.
In my eyes at least, Bernardo Silva should win the award. Against Spurs, he was as sensational as has been all season. He worked tirelessly, twisted Spurs' defense all over the place, ran with the ball as if it were attached to his foot and created the winning goal with a delightful jinx inside and cross in the box.
He is simply a joy to watch and has defined matches consistently for us this campaign. It's about time he receives the praise he so richly deserves.
Star man: Bernardo Silva
TOTTENHAM
Barnaby Slater (barnabyslater.com)
To be fair, Spurs put up a lot more or a fight than I fear we may be able to after our historic Champions League victory.
We could easily have had three in the first half, but equally it never felt like we deserved to get a result from the game.
Star man: Juan Foyth
[Idon'tcareforthatmuchthoughasamstillbasinginthefeelingfromWednesdayandecstaticaboutourupcomingsemi-final Bernardo Silva put in another fine display as Manchester City got the better of Tottenham
BOURNEMOUTH
Peter Bell (Cherry Chimes)
Bournemouth might have been confident. They expected the goal to come and found themselves in a real contest for possession. Chances went early on and Fulham took full advantage. Even with three strikers on the pitch, Bournemouth couldn't unlock the door.
Fulham fans were happy singing "1-0 to the Championship". Eddie Howe is still looking for consistency.
Star man: Jefferson Lerma
FULHAM
Russ Goldman (Cottage Talk)
Scott Parker wanted the team to play with pride and reconnect with supporters. Now hey is getting results, too. It is unfortunate that this has come too late to keep us in the Premier League but we are seeing building blocks for next season. The way Fulham played suggested a new beginning.
Star man: Sergio Rico
HUDDERSFIELD
Harry Greenwood (Better Than Klopp)
Another defeat along our embarrassing relegation road. Siewert switched things up yet again as he assesses the squad ahead of a huge summer. Although we had chances in this one we were toothless yet again.
Watford capitalized with a second before Karlan Grant – one of our very few shining lights – score a consolation. With Liverpool and Manchester United to come, things look bleak.
Star man: Juninho Bacuna
WATFORD
David Anderson (Golden Pages Fanzine)
What a season this is turning out to be! FA Cup dreams aside, it was nice to get back to winning ways in the league and take the lead in the race for seventh place and potentially Europe.
It was reassuring to see us manage without Troy Deeney and we did so capably thanks to the magic of Gerard Deulofeu. He was quick off the mark to give us an early lead and it meant the rest of the afternoon could be enjoyed rather than endured.
Star man: Gerard Deulofeu
Watford fans celebrate during their side's victory over Huddersfield on Saturday
WEST HAM
Graeme Howlett (KUMB.com)
For the second successive week, West Ham were denied a goal and two points by a mystifyingly bad call from the match officials. These things just yourself out over the course of a season, it has been said. Which may be true for some clubs, but certainly not West Ham United, for whom such things are becoming something of a regular occurrence.
Star man: Lucas Perez
LEICESTER
Phil Simms (LCFC World)
A lively end to a match, for long periods, bore all the hallmarks or an end-of-season run-out in the sunshine. The players were on the beach. Harvey Barnes' injury time goal at least sent the Foxes faithful home with a smile.
Star man: Jamie Vardy
WOLVES
Ben Husband (Wolves Fancast)
The sun was out and it felt very much like pre-season fare as a pedestrian Wolev's struggled to break down Brighton. The Seagulls came to the Black Country without any ambition but left with a point. Antoerh example of Wolves failing to get the job done against the lowly sides. Nuno's men now have four games to ensure the season doesn't fizzle out.
Star man: Ruben Vinagre
BRIGHTON
Simon Cox (Brighton Fans)
Not often does a 0-0 feel so satisfying! I wanted to be last on MOTD! After our recent farces this mundane, but disciplined, bore-draw was a breath of fresh air! Team selection was Chris showing fans the dressing-room divide, and that at least £ 50million has clearly been wasted.
We red our luck, but we certainly earned our point. Kayal was a patient, professional and should start at Spurs.
Star man: Beram Kayal
Brighton fans watch on their sides with Wolves at Molineux on Saturday
NEWCASTLE
Tom Bore (Read Newcastle)
What a day for Ayoze Perez. Silencing his critics in the most emphatic way – a hat trick at St James’s Park to all-but-confirm survival. His movement and build-up play has been superb in recent weeks and he was rewarded in full against Southampton.
It feels unlikely with three games to go that Newcastle will make the necessary steps required to equal last season's 10th place finish, but with 41 points already on the board, the feeling among the fans is positive nonetheless.
Star man: Ayoze Perez
SOUTHAMPTON
Jack West (Fresh Saints)
Newcastle capitalized on a dismal first half that proved pivotal in dictating the result. The second half was the complete opposite and we arguably deserved to take something from the game. Hassenhuttl's tactical changes were spot on.
Star man: Mario Lemina
EVERTON
Joel Parker (Toffee Analysis)
Everton absolutely dominated a dreadful Man United team, and for one of the first times this season were clinical. Silva's system is always better against teams that want to retain possession, but we struggle to create great chances.
Today was different, we started off quickly and had total control for long periods of the game. The goals were absolutely incredible and Everton thoroughly deserved the victory.
Star man: Gylfi Sigurdsson
MANCHESTER UNITED
Sam Peoples (The Peoples Person)
When will United rebuild the club properly? We're a shambles from top to bottom. So many of those players should be sold. There is no way this can all be done in one summer. Sir Alex retired.
Star man: The Away End
Manchester United's players look after a conceding fourth goal to Everton
ARSENAL
Peter Wood (Le Grove)
Unai Emery spluttered at a critical part of the season, arrogantly underestimating Palace. Mustafi in defense, Jenkinson anywhere near the team, Guendouzi and Elneny in midfield … it was always going to fail and it did.
Arsenal have blown a huge opportunity and it looks like the manager has it all on the Europa League. A very dangerous gamble.
Star man: The Final Whistle
CRYSTAL PALACE
Jay Crame (The Eagles Beak)
Roy got this one spot on and the players pulled off a big result against the Gunners, and fully deserved it with the hosts finding the pace and speed on the break hard to deal with.
Benteke has had his critics but we play so much better with him as the lone striker, he just hasn't been able to match that with goals. Today was a very good all round performance from the Belgian. Big call from Roy to drop by Aanholt but it worked.
Star man: Christian Benteke
CARDIFF
Callum Ellis (Inside Wales Sport)
Competed well in the first half but it was always going to be difficult once they took the lead. It looked like a penalty on Salah for me – and one of our fans would have been furious with that child or decision did not go our way. If we keep playing like this, we'll stay up.
Star man: Bruno Ecuele Manga
LIVERPOOL
Chances were wasted and Cardiff survived until half-time, but the Reds eventually become them down in the South Wales sunshine. Wijnaldum's strike was a thing of beauty and Milner has balls of steel.
No doubt the Salah diving agenda will rear it's head once again, but it's all nonsense that was a clear a foul as you'll ever see . Many Kopites are hoping for a favor from arch rivals United this week. Not me.
United don't even have a snowball chance in hell or stopping City. My fading hopes are with Sean Dyche and the Burnley bash brothers, Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood. Or Brendan. Imagine that.
Star man: Georginio Wijnaldum
So I know Skye’s stupid, but I didn’t know how stupid she could get until Dumbledore asked us to explain our actions during the comet TLSQ, and Skye was like “talking isn’t really our thing.” To which Murphy responds with “speak for yourself!” And Skye was like “thought I just did?” With THE most confused look her face, like... WOW. I mean it could just be that she somehow never heard that expression, but idek it was so weird. She kind of reminded me of Barnaby for a bit, except he’s WAY nicer.
I wish I could agree with you anon, but to tell you the truth - the Comet TLSQ was where I really found that the Quidditch gang was growing on me. Especially as a trio, they're hilarious. Not to mention, the entire premise is that Skye wants to give you a family heirloom broomstick. (And people say she's a bad friend to MC...?)
I dunno, I just found the moment you described to very endearing. I laughed at the confused face. Skye isn't the sharpest tool in the shed sometimes, but she's definitely not on Barnaby's level. Likewise, she isn't nearly as sweet as him, but she's still fun to be around. Least I think so.
Note
I think another problem with Skye's situation is she's not communicating properly with her dad, she feels pressured to do quidditch by him but not once has she said that she readily agreed to it, she joined because she thought that if she didn't her family will look down on her but like what if her dad is just stupidly oblivious to her struggles and has to be told outright that he's directly or indirectly forcing his kids on a path not of their choosing
This is the primary reason that I hope we get to meet her Dad eventually. Because I haven’t looked on him kindly at all, but to be totally fair, it’s hard to pass accurate judgment until MC meets him in person.
Is Skye protecting her Dad’s feelings by keeping her ambivalence quiet? Is Ethan truly unaware that he’s projecting a lot of pressure onto his kids, especially his daughter? If he heard Skye say things like “Quidditch isn’t optional in my family” would he react with alarm and clarify that Skye should pursue what she wants?
Or...does he know what he’s doing? Does he simply not care? How comfortable would Skye feel expressing an opinion that goes against Ethan’s wishes? It doesn’t seem like she would feel comfortable doing so. The parenting just feels very toxic to me. But until we meet Ethan, or even Skye’s brothers...there’s no way to be sure. What if Ethan turns out to be like Barnaby or something? That would change things...
After reading the datamines for the upcoming story chapters it seems like they're building up the fact that Merula might end up killing Rakepick or not killing her at all. I'm guessing the former is most likely to happen and if it does, what then? What would Merula do after the fact, and more importantly how would the rest of the characters think and feel after finding out that Merula killed their evil ex-professor? Can't say they would all go out for butterbeer after hearing such news.
You know, I’ve been thinking a lot about the Sunken Vault. (Which, by the way, we are apparently confirmed to visit by Chapter 42!) I recall reading somewhere from a former writer on their team that one of the things that they knew from the very beginning was exactly what was in the final Vault, and what would happen there. So whatever’s coming, it’s been the plan for a very long time. That is of course, assuming that the Sunken Vault even is the final vault. Everything so far suggests that it is, but then again...there’s still one Year left in the story.
I don’t believe we’ll be going out for butterbeer this time, or celebrating at all. In thinking about it, the only reason we did it last year was because Bill was graduating. If that hadn’t been going on, no way would the squad have had any reason to celebrate post-Portrait Vault. Well, it’s that, and the behind-the-scenes reason that they probably wanted Moody to pick MC up specifically from the Three Broomsticks to add on to those sweet, sweet Jacob parallels.
I don’t believe Merula will kill Rakepick.  I don’t want her to, first of all. I think it would not do her character arc any good, or her mental health for that matter. But I also don’t see it being feasibly possible. This is Rakepick we’re talking about. The woman who effortlessly defeated MC before that duel had even begun. Merula is emotionally compromised, distracted, and simply not as talented as someone like Rakepick, or even MC. If she faces Rakepick, she’s going to lose.
But let’s say she doesn’t. Let’s say she bests Rakepick and actually goes through with killing her. I have my doubts, again, that she has it in her to cast the killing curse. But if she does, and it  happens...well, some of them like Ben would probably praise the accomplishment. Others, like Penny, would probably be shocked that Merula actually went through with it. Barnaby wouldn’t know what to think, and neither would Tulip. She’d want to be happy about this, but she’d be worried for Merula. As much as I hate to say it, Merula would also likely face legal charges. It would certainly have been justifiable homicide and perhaps one could even argue a case for self-defense, depending on the circumstances. But the use of the Killing Curse alone is enough to warrant Azkaban, MC warned her about this at the very start of the year.
She might very well go to Azkaban at the end of this year if she does indeed kill Rakepick. But that certainly wouldn’t be the end of her story. She’d get released within the first dozen chapters of Year 7, no doubt. If she didn’t go to Azkaban, Dumbledore and Moody would still almost certainly keep her on a much shorter leash, which she would rebel against...causing to more Merula-style drama. Ultimately, I just don’t think this would be good for her. Jacob can kill Rakepick. Or Snape. Or anyone. Just...not Merula.
Yeah, not sure about #skyedefencesquad, but I *am* a proud member of #pennydefencesquad. I was honestly indifferent towards her until now, but her getting called a predator and getting attacked for something that probably wasn’t intended to be taken too seriously, swayed my opinion. Poor Penny. ;~;
(Skye is definitely more problematic than Penny, but I feel like she would be a leading member of Skye's defense squad 😂)
I just don't understand why people think that's what the scene was going for. Even when Ismelda wanted to force Barnaby to love her, and was actively trying to give him a love potion...the SQ didn't really paint her as a villain for that. She was a lonely, angry child who was making a very bad choice, and she needed to be stopped...but the story didn't punish her when all was said and done. Compare that to a throwaway joke/ship tease moment with Penny...who is literally one of the kindest and sweetest people in the whole damn Potterverse...like, guys. Come on. Leave her alone.
