Thus far I have created polls to break down all the dolls in the Dolls of the World line that represent the same country or cultural group with, as far as I can tell (and it is very possible I've missed one), two exceptions.
These two exceptions being Native American and Pacific Islander.
If I can break down the trouble I am having with these two.
To my knowledge, there are 5 different dolls in the Dolls of the World line named "Native American Barbie", one named "Northwest Coast Native American Barbie" and one named "Princess of the Navajo". The majority of these dolls do not provide any further context on the doll packaging to indicate if they are specifically referring to a particular culture under the Native American umbrella. Their costumes may indicate specific tribes, but if so, I am not informed enough to know.
Pictured above are 1993 and 1994, both presented as Native American but with nothing more specific listed.
1995, whose box text indicates she is from the Southern Plains.
1996 and 1998 which are again unspecified - 1998 mentions Navajo and Hupa on her box text, but uses these as examples of Native American tribes without claiming identification with either.
And then Northwest Coast Native American Barbie and Princess of the Navajo.
I do not know enough about Native American culture to know whether it would be appropriate to combine these into one group and create a poll asking to pick which one is the best, but it does not feel respectful. It also does not feel appropriate to exclude them from the bracket. So I am at an impasse.
(Pacific Islander Barbies discussed in a separate post.)

Theory: Not only does the Suez Canal (or an equivalent artificial waterway) exist in the Barbie Animated Cinematic Universe, it existed possibly a century or more before it did in our reality.
Base Assumptions
The Barbie animated movies take place in the same universe - while all evidence for this theory is sourced from Barbie as the Island Princess (2007), based on various cross-references (Easter eggs, model sharing, etc.) and other scholars' work, I am a believer in the BACU.
The Barbie planet is some version of Earth - while cultural history may be different, details in dialogue, ecology, etc. imply that landmasses themselves are laid out similar to those on Earth.
Events happened factually in-universe as presented in the film - this is one Barbie movie that doesn't have a framing device as a story being told, and while Barbie's presence as an "actress" and the diegesis of the musical numbers complicate matters, the overall presentation implies that this is in-universe historical reality.
Point 1 - Locations
There are two key locations in the film, those being Ro's Island and the Kingdom of Apollonia. Ro's Island is identified as being in the "South Seas" - looking at the native wildlife (red pandas, peacocks, Asian elephants, and saltwater crocodiles) narrows it down to in or near the Bay of Bengal. Apollonia, meanwhile, can't be pinpointed with as much accuracy, but context (architecture, fashion, language, etc.) implies it is somewhere in Europe.
Point 2 - Travel Time
When Ro leaves the island with Prince Antonio, they are able to reach Apollonia within a single musical montage - while this is hardly a standard measure of time, we know it is not long enough for Ro and Prince Antonio's relationship to meaningfully progress despite being isolated in close quarters, and not a long enough absence to be remarked upon as anything more than an inconvenience to Apollonia's royal family. Additionally, no overland travel is shown - the journey is entirely by sea. The most efficient natural waterway between the Bay of Bengal and Europe would be sailing all the way around the southern tip of Africa - even a one-way trip could easily take up to half a year with the sailing ships shown in the film. Clearly a more efficient route is being used, and the most direct waterway between these two points would be cutting between the Red Sea and the Mediterranean - the Suez Canal.
Point 2.5 - Regional Relations
Consistent and efficient travel between Europe and South Asia in this universe is further evinced by Queen Danielle's ownership of a rhesus monkey and Queen Ariana's use of "sunset herb" (both endemic to the Bay of Bengal) implying trade relations between the regions, and by Ro's presence on her island to begin with, the revelation of her Paladian royal heritage (Paladia being presumably another European kingdom based on its apparent proximity to Apollonia) implying regular travel between the regions of her origin and shipwreck.
Point 3 - Historical Era
Pinpointing a specific historical era in a Barbie film is difficult, as cultural elements which are contemporary to each other in their universe correspond to many different eras in ours - the shipbuilding is 17th century, the fashions are 18th century, the germ theory is 19th century, etc. That said, only the most recent cultural reference points would place the time period consistent with that of the construction of the Suez Canal (1859-1869), while all others would indicate an earlier point in history. Thus, it's likely that the Suez Canal in the Barbie universe was constructed some time before ours.
I welcome contributions from other BACU scholars, whether to refute my observations or build upon them. The implications of this theory, while unclear to me, are undoubtedly far-reaching in terms of the Barbie universe's geopolitics.

Hello Princess-Ibri, i know it's strange but i want to ask you, in addition to Barbie movies, do you also Tom & Jerry and Scooby Doo movies, my favorite if i had to choose between them all would be: Tom & Jerry the Lost Dragon and Scooby Doo and the Goblin King.
I have watched many Scooby Doo movies and a few Tom and Jerry ones yeah! My favs are probably the old 90s ones. Zombie Island and Witches Ghost and all that, and then the Tom and Jerry Sherlock Holmes, I enjoyed all the references to the old actors :)

So I just watched Princess and the Popstar as part of my mega Barbie movie watch/rewatch. For reference, here's where it sits on my current personal tier list (I've seen more of them I promise, just not in a very long time). I feel that it's placement on my tier list is justified considering I feel the same way about it as I do Island Princess: two very good movies with just a few aspects which make me apprehensive about watching it twice (Tika. If Tika wasn't in Island Princess it would've been in yellow tier at least). I also didn't enjoy it as much as Diamond Castle or Three Musketeers, which are both films that came out in a similar timeframe to Princess and the Popstar. So, cyan-soon-to-be-green-tier-why-the-fuck-is-it-not-green-hold-on seems fitting.
I think y'all can tell that I like the Barbie movies.
Princess and the Popstar started off a banger (despite Princesses Wanna Have Fun being the bad kind of earworm - I hadn't watched the film in well over five years until today but that song was still getting stuck in my head every other week up until as of literally a few days ago probably). A nice little homage to Princess and the Pauper without totally ripping it off. Nice throwback to To Be a Princess there too, as a kid I hadn't seen Princess and the Pauper so I had no idea where the song came from or anything (literally I used to forget that the song was even in the movie) but as of today the original is literally my favourite Barbie movie ever so when I heard the opening lyrics I got... way too excited over this Barbie movie than I really should've. But yeah no the music in this damn movie is fantastic aside from the one song.
Tori and Keira were absolutely fantastic characters. They were VERY flawed but like can you blame them??? They're not even eighteen yet, they've both grown up in heavily restrictive environments (Keira having been performing since she was six and Tori acting out all the time as a result of the way she was brought up), have had such limited social interaction and have been taught to "never act your age" (act older than you really are) so it's totally reasonable that these girls are gonna fuck up and make mistakes and do stupid things (and hey they might be faking their identities but at least they're not committing identity theft pfffft). They don't have the wisdom of an average 17 year old yet but they're treated by everyone around them like they're so much older ESPECIALLY KEIRA (and yet she's the least impulsive one out of the two). Overall, I support womens wrongs. Genuinely listen to this movie's version of To Be a Princess, you'll absolutely get what I mean.
I still think that Serafina is superior to Vanessa but... Vanessa my beloved <3 Riff was not as fun but I love his name referring to a guitar riff while also being. Ya know. Dog.
My biggest complained about this movie is Crider's whole thing with the Diamond Gardenia like. If that whole plot hadn't been in the movie then it would've been so much better. Keep the whole drought thing for Tori's character development and whatnot, and make Amelia's whole thing about keeping Tori in line be about Amelia's Material Girl lifestyle and her not wanting Tori to find out about what kinda state the kingdom is in because "Vanessa, I'm a Material Girl" (make her an homage to best Barbie villain the Original Material Girl Preminger). Like girl does not want to give up her riches in order to help the populace. Do that instead of having an unrealistic magical diamond-growing plant and Basically Uncle Ian from Alvin and the Chipmunks having an unhealthy obsession with it... (the way he broke into the castle too like- those guards DESERVED to have their heads bonked with vases if that's how shit they are at their job).
To sum my thoughts up, I reckon this movie started off really strong but as soon as the Gardenia and Crider became a thing it began to very slowly fall off. A few changes could've made it so much better. Anyway it's nice to see that it wasn't as shit as I thought it would be, considering it was my childhood favourite :D
Also I stan Prince Liam. Dude was barely present, asked next to no questions and rolled with whatever out-of-left-field shenanigans were thrown at him and I support that. Also no forced romance or hinted feelings or anything, as far as I'm concerned he and Keira were just bros causing chaos together. Good for them.

Me and my sister used to play these really elaborate role play scenes when we were children (I was like 11 and she was like 6) with littlest pet shops et all and the story lines were always set around this family Dynasty that were Uber powerful in their town because the patriarch was, despite his canonical nickname that everyone referred to him as being Pooper (his name was Cooper Yttik actually) an extremely talented inventor and scientist, and so they were often commissioned by the Royal Crown for various projects and to help provide defense procedures (lots of evil plots in this town). It was Cooper and I *want* to say his ex-wife, all of their children of various prowess, their associates, adoptee found family (Bluetooth the blue noil and Artemis the freckle dog being two I can think of off the top of my head)... The royal family, of course, consisted of barbie of the Island Princess fame and also some of the mermaids from mermaidia. Anyways, long story short, every single time we finished a story arc (which could take anywhere from one play session to several weeks), there'd ALWAYS, without fail, be an end-of-session blowout party where they'd all dance and get excited and ALWAYS, without fail, sing We Are Family by Sister Sledge. Whenever I think about this, I smile :)

My thoughts on Barbie
Ok so firstly, INCREDIBLE FILM
• As someone who adores all that is pink, this film was a joy to look at for two hours.
• Weird Barbie is incredible, I want her to be my auntie.
• a little disappointed that they didn’t reference any of the movies tho. A little princess and the pauper or island princess moment would have been nice for those of us who grew up on that shit.
• Also I know it was supposed to be emotional, but during Gloria’s(America Ferrera) big speech, all I could focus on was how good her hair looked
Like EXCUSE ME the CURLS the SHINE
• Simu Liu is amazing, the kenergy is STRONG
• that dance number was so queer coded im sorry.
• I’m waiting for Ryan!Ken and Simu!Ken to fall in love, we need that enemies to lovers.
•ok on to more serious stuff, so spoilers ahead
•firstly, it is a movie that needs to be entertaining and of reasonable length, so they could never have covered everything.
• I personally would have loved to see a little more emphasis on equality between the Kens and Barbies. I know they imply and hint that it will be more equal in Barbieland eventually, but it would have been nice to see it more explicitly put.
• maybe something about how feminism isn’t the superiority of women, but the equality between genders. I know that was the whole point of the film, but maybe it needs to be said a little louder for the ppl in the back.
• I watched it with my mother, and she mentioned that she didn’t love that they took down Kendom through manipulation. I agree for the most part, but I think it would have worked if they put in a joke or something like that where one of the Barbies suggests compromise and conversation with the Kens, but either Gloria or Sasha says that the Kens won’t listen. At least then it would be addressed that manipulation is a last resort as opposed to diplomacy.
• And of course, Greta Gerwig still did and incredible job. You can’t have everything, especially in a feature length film.
*gets off soapbox*
Ok I’m done now.
And lastly,
You are kenough

I saw your Barbie posts related to accents, languages and nationalities and hae some thoughts:
Hadley from Charm School not speaking English as her mother tongue. She's played by Teresa, so she comes from a Latin American country. She is Latina, like Isla coming from Japan.
I just consider Mariposa Spain and they speak Spanish. Shimmervale, on the other hand, I view as Malta. Fairytopia, Portugal so they speak Portuguese. Island Princess, they speak Italian etc, Meribella is Monaco so French.
And Kira apparently is Vietnamese, Nia from Western Fun was Native American, and Miko was Native Hawaiian, as I saw an ask about why we didn't get other races.
Now an explanation that is needed: Fairy Secret. Why is Taylor British and why is Zane Italian, and in Mermaid Tale why does the lipstick fish have a Hungarian accent? She talks like Zsa Zsa Gabor??? What? And yes why isn't Summer Aussie, as well as why did Blaine never appear in a movie when Barbie wasn;t dating Ken, and why didn't Christie, Lea, and Kayla appaear? I mean Kira only had 2 dolls in the 2000s before being completely cut, so her I get.
Sat on this for awhile trying to decide if I wanted to be nice answering, and I decided that I do not want to be nice. I haven't talked about Barbie in months, really, so I have no idea what posts you're referring to. There are literally over 7,700 posts in my Barbie tag from the past 10 years so speaking vaguely about something not recent is of no help to me. But whatever, I'm going to deal with this and then turn off my ask again.
I tried searching my blog to see what the hell you're talking about so maybe I'm right, maybe I'm not, whatever.
Re: this post?
Hadley from Charm School not speaking English as her mother tongue. She's played by Teresa, so she comes from a Latin American country. She is Latina, like Isla coming from Japan.
A couple things here:
I don't really account for who "plays" the characters in the movies in my headcanons, because I have everyone existing alongside Barbie herself, so it doesn't matter. My most recent headcanon for Hadley had her coming from Johanistan (although that would most likely mean English is still not her first language).
Isla does not come from Japan. Nowhere in the movie is it said that she comes from Japan (her kingdom is never mentioned, in fact). That is your headcanon, it's not canon, and therefore has no bearing on anything.
Re: this post?
I just consider Mariposa Spain and they speak Spanish. Shimmervale, on the other hand, I view as Malta. Fairytopia, Portugal so they speak Portuguese. Island Princess, they speak Italian etc, Meribella is Monaco so French.
God where to begin here.
First of all, assuming I found the right post, you completely missed the fucking point of what I was saying. Fairytopia (which encompasses Flutterfield and Shimmervale, they are not separate, they are pieces of a whole) DOES NOT HAVE SPAIN. THEREFORE THEY CAN'T SPEAK SPANISH. That was the point I was making! Are you kidding me here? The point of that post was speculating what you might call a language analogous to Spanish, without Spain existing. Since it's spoken in Flutterfield, the language could be called Flutter, and therefore Marabella and Carlos have Flutter accents. Something like that. That was my point.
Secondly, Island Princess and Popstar have nothing at all to do with Fairytopia or, again, what I was saying. Irrelevant.
No idea what this is referring to, and I'm not going to bother looking this time bc I've ranted about Mattel's racism plenty of times.
And Kira apparently is Vietnamese, Nia from Western Fun was Native American, and Miko was Native Hawaiian, as I saw an ask about why we didn't get other races.
Those are old dolls from lines that haven't existed in decades, they're fully fucking irrelevant. There's a nameless horde of diverse Fashionistas these days, and that's great, I'm glad that ppl have them, but there is still a severe lack of diversity in the animated media that is appalling, and yes still even though Barbie "Brooklyn" Roberts exists now. I mean, for god's sake, the current universe started in 2018 and it took until 2021 for Barbie "Malibu" Roberts to have a second Black friend, and even that only happened bc of the BLM protests of May 2020. Like. Are you fucking kidding me? THAT'S what it took to expand Malibu's social circle? GIVE ME A FUCKING BREAK. Mattel is racist and ppl have articulated it better than me, but it's just a fact. (This is when I decided to be mean btw. The unmitigated gall to try and defend Mattel to me... Shut the fuck up.)
And now, the last inanity:
Now an explanation that is needed: Fairy Secret. Why is Taylor British and why is Zane Italian, and in Mermaid Tale why does the lipstick fish have a Hungarian accent? She talks like Zsa Zsa Gabor??? What? And yes why isn't Summer Aussie, as well as why did Blaine never appear in a movie when Barbie wasn;t dating Ken, and why didn't Christie, Lea, and Kayla appaear? I mean Kira only had 2 dolls in the 2000s before being completely cut, so her I get.
Let's break this down.
So, you have no problem saying that Flutterfield is Spain, even tho Fairytopia is not Earth and has no known contact with Earth at all... but somehow the characters of Gloss Angeles, whose MAIN PLOT is about their connection with Earth, confuses you? What? WHAT? Why can't Taylor be British? Why can't Zane be Italian? What are you TALKING about?
Never really cared about what accent the lipstick fish had, but again, Mermaid Tale takes place on Earth. She could pick it up. Or it's some kind of fish accent. Who even cares?
The only animated depiction of Summer thus far has been Life in the Dreamhouse, and since Blaine didn't exist there, they might have retconned the fact that she's supposed to be Australian. Or maybe they forgot.
Barbie didn't date Blaine in the movies bc she stopped dating, period. There hasn't been a romantic arc in a Barbie movie since 2015 (longer since there's been a good one), and before Epic Road Trip, Barbie as herself's last romance... was Ken in Fairy Secret. And then she was a teenager and nobody was allowed to date for whatever reason. There was no reason for Blaine to be there lmfao. Also who even cares about Blaine? He sucks.
Christie, Lea, and Kayla have been dead for years so of course they're not going to appear in anything?? It was a miracle to see Christie in animated form in 2015 when she had already been dead for 10 full years at that point, but she was super whitewashed so like they couldn't even do that right lmfao.
Anyway you probably won't read this bc I'm blocking you as soon as I post this. Get well soon and never bother me again.
#mel irl#barbie babbles#thedisneytardblr#thanks for asking#I really regret choosing that as my ask tag but it's too late to change it#if anyone knows of a tag replacer that still works please tell me

I especially want references to the other Barbie movies.
I better see someone rocking the peacock feathers from Island Princess. There should ABSOLUTELY be someone dressed as the Nutcracker. A pair of besties better be channeling Ericka and Anneliese. I want to see some rainbow fairy wings and mermaid tails. You know there’s gotta be a swan themed ballerina at that premier.
Barbie the Movie can NOT have a boring red carpet. Not on my watch.

Barbie Fun Fact
The origin and meaning of the names of the protagonists of the Barbie movies.
(The Nutcracker - 2001) Clara: Originated from Latin, Clara means "bright", "clear", "luminous" and "illustrious".
(Rapunzel - 2002) Rapunzel: Its origin is uncertain, but some linguists believe that the name comes from the word “rampion”, which is a very nutritious edible vegetable/flower.
(Swan Lake - 2003) Odette: Of French and Germanic origin, Odette means "rich", "full of goods", "virtuous".
(The Princess and the Pauper - 2004) Anneliese: French origin, Anneliese is a combination of Anna and Liese, with Anna being a form of the Hebrew Channah, meaning "full of grace", and Liese being a German diminutive of Elisabeth "My God is an oath". (The Princess and the Pauper - 2004) Erika : It means "eternal sovereign", "rich in honor and glory" or "she who reigns like an eagle". Of Germanic origin.
(Fairytopia - 2005) Elina: This name apparently has several origins and meanings, I don't know exactly which one is right. Elina means "noble serpent", "nobility serpent", "little noble", "the glittering one, the resplendent one". The name came from the Latin Alina, Alyna, variants of Adelina, a name with two possibilities. In its Greek origin, it means "bright light". in hebrew it means "Life is given by God".
(Magic of Pegasus - 2005) Annika: of russian origin, Annika means "gracious", "full of grace"; “army” or “splendour”.
(Twelve dancing princesses - 2006) Genevieve: Of Celtic origin, Genevieve means "white and soft woman", "woman white as the foam of the sea"; "woman of good origins".
(Island Princess - 2007) Rosella: Of Italian origin, Rosella Means "rose" and "beautiful flower".
(Mariposa and her butterfly fairy friends - 2008) Mariposa: Of Spanish Latin origin, Mariposa means "Butterfly".

(A Carol Christmas - 2008) Eden: Of Hebrew origin, Eden means "person whose company is pleasant". In addition to alluding to the paradise of Eden.
(Three Musketeers - 2009) Corinne: Originating from Latin, Corinne means "daughter of the crown", it also comes from Greek origin meaning "virgin". In addition to the English and French origin "beautiful maiden".
(Mermaid Tale - 2010) Merliah: Means "mermaid", "girl from the sea", "beautiful sea", "moon of the ocean".
(Princess Charm School - 2011) Blair: Scottish gaelic origin, Blair means "plain", "meadow" or "field".
(The Princess and the Popstar - 2012) Victoria: Meaning "victory," Victoria is of Latin origin. (The Princess and the Popstar - 2012) Kiera: It is an Anglicized version of "Ciara" and means "Little Dark One", besides that Keira is an anagram of Erika, referring to the character of princess and paupper.
(Pink Shoes - 2013) Kristyn: Of Scandinavian and latin origins, the meaning of Kristyn is "follower of Christ".
(The Pearl Princess - 2014) Lumina: Name of Slavic origin that means "sunshine", romanian word for sunshine.
(The Secret Door - 2014) Alexa: of Greek origin, mean "defender of man", “protector of humanity” or “she who wards off enemies”. (Rock N Royals - 2015) Courtney: It means "short nose", "little nose". This name originated from an English noble surname, derived from the French Courtenay. (Rock N Royals - 2015) Erika Juno: Erika we already know the meaning, but Juno means "youth", "queen of the gods" or "she who was born in June". Juno is a name of mythological origin, which originated from Latin.
(Princess Power - 2015) Kara: Of Italian origin, Kara means "beloved" or "dear,"
I hope you enjoyed the content of this post, heart and reblog, and follow me pls <3

In reference to the Rats SMP, everyone keeps bringing up the “we’re rats, we’re rats, we’re the rats” song.
Meanwhile, I keep thinking about that one song where the rats run around at night drugging everyone’s food in Barbie Island Princess.
You cringe but that shit slapped.
