I unironically love Barbie's Perfect Christmas

Barbie: A Perfect Christmas is one of my favorite Christmas movies. No, really. Hear me out. It has special magic (and I'll try not to give too many spoilers).

Summary: Barbie and her sisters want to fly to New York to experience a perfect Christmas in Manhattan, but their plane makes an unscheduled landing in Rochester, Minnesota, because of weather. So they rent a car and try driving to Minneapolis, hoping to reach MSP and an earlier alternative flight. Apparently no one told them not to attempt this in a snow storm (*kids, don't do this*).

Of course they get lost, somehow missing the exit to 35 and completely bypassing Hennepin County, and they wind up somewhere near the Brainerd Lakes region, if the topography and trees are anything to go by. They find a mysteriously open resort lodge in the woods, where everyone has pointed ears and is Super Excited about Christmas. See where this is going? Maybe ... BUT!

Barbie wanders through the lodge in the middle of the night, singing and doing ballet (which is something I totally do whenever I'm staying at a La Quinta). Reindeer turn into dogs (and then back into deer). There are rock bands, and things happen. The whole thing has strong liminal space energy, like they've entered a portal where much of the world looks familiar and yet reality is held in suspension.

Barbie's *I want* song ("The Wish I Wish Tonight") is a hauntingly beautiful ballad in 6/8 time with a jazzy (almost Viennese) lilt and a dominant-fundamental bitonal melodic structure. I would buy the DVD just for that song alone. But also, the dress she wears in the final scene. That's a whole aesthetic in and of itself.
