Doom - když ještě nebyl Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) nebyl ta slavný!
Doom je hrou, která musí být známá každému, kdo ví, že počítač umí dělat i jiné věci, než jen opravovat pravopisné chyby ve Wordu. Pravděpodobně není známější titul v historii elektronické zábavy (no, možná ještě Pac-man).

SlashinglyHandsome Horror Challenge Theme: Top Ten
Trigger warnings: Nudity, explicit sexual content, homophobic slurs, torture, mutilation.
I will admit that I was very worried about this theme. I have some friends who are into some films that are way more than I can handle. So I turned to my friend Nicole, who is my best friend that hates horror movies, and asked her. Figured I could get off with something light. She had trouble naming ten horror movies that she's seen, but when she said “Hostel”, my face turned white. For years, I've heard how brutal this movie is, how it made people physically ill, and how they wish they could erase it from their minds. I immediately began to message complete strangers in a horror forum looking for an alternative, to no avail, so I put on my grown-up pants and watched it.
Eh.
Hostel is about these two American guys looking to score as much foreign vagina as possible as they backpack across Europe. That's the first third of the movie. Lots of boobs. The second third of the movie is a lot of partying after arriving at a hostel in Slovakia, with some small torture of the kidnapped awkward best friend. Lots of alcohol and implied homoeroticism. The final act is some more (admittedly minimal) torture and an escape from the torture prison. Lots of chasing. At its core, the idea is terrifying. Being stuck in an unfamilar place with total strangers who want to do you harm. But this movie isn't just not scary to me. It's not even that gory, which is its claim to fame.
Was this extreme for 2005? I don't know. Jay Hernandez as Paxton is pretty entertaining to watch, but him in his boxers is one of the only memorable parts of this movie for me. There are only two torture moments I really felt grossed out by. Josh (Derek Richardson) tries to escape from the torture prison, but his Achilles tendons have been cut, something that has terrified me since Pet Sematary. Jennifer Lim, another standout in this, has half of her face burnt off (or something?) and her eyeball is dangling out. When Paxton tries to help her escape, he cuts off the eyeball and a bunch of yellow pus spews out. The other torture scenes are just quick little flashes so that you know it's happening but isn't effective in grossing out. That being said, I didn't see this (during the watching experience) as a torture movie. It read more to me as “Don't trust strangers in unfamiliar places. Don't do stupid shit impulsively.” Two other cast members with some acting chops are Jan Vlasák as the Dutch Businessman and Barbara Nedeljáková as Natalya, one of the seductresses that lure in innocent horny travelers.
There's a mixture of relief and disappointment now that I've finally watched Hostel. Relief that I've finally gotten it out of the way, and disappointment that it didn't make me throw up. It isn't bad, but it's not what I expected.
Three out of five eye pus squirts.
