Milano, Bookcity al Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia
Tumblr media
L'ultima lezione di Italo Calvino di Andrea Prencipe e Massimo Sideri, Luiss University Press, 2022.... #notizie #news #breakingnews #cronaca #politica #eventi #sport #moda Read the full article

Page 6: Once beautiful Sarah Ferguson has ruined her face with too much sun -- after examining recent photos of the duchess medical experts said she looks more than a decade older than her 60 years -- years of stress following her divorce from now-disgraced Prince Andrew and virtual banishment from the royal family after embarrassing photos of Texas millionaire John Bryan sucking her toes were released have ravaged the duchess

Page 9: Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s seemingly endless divorce and custody war has cost them more than $20 million and there’s no end in sight -- the exes have coughed up wads of cash for lawyers and court fees and arbitration expenses -- although Brad’s attorneys have repeatedly tried to negotiate shared custody Angie has instructed her legal team to accept nothing less than full custody of her five youngest kids Pax and Zahara and Shiloh and Vivienne and Knox and she doesn’t care how much it will cost

Page 16: Jeffrey Epstein’s accused madam Ghislaine Maxwell hobnobbed with the rich and famous for years and she’s now mortified those A-listers could be dragged into her legal troubles -- the disgraced British heiress is currently rotting in a New York jail awaiting trial in 2021 on six federal charges related to trafficking minors for sex but before her stunning fall Ghislaine rubbed shoulders with a who’s who of royalty and the business world and the entertainment industry -- pictures include Ghislaine with Epstein and Michael Bolton, Prince Andrew, Martha Stewart, Calvin Klein, Harvey Weinstein, Simon Hammerstein and Josh Lucas, Jessica Capshaw and Denise Richards, Heidi Klum
Page 18: Country rocker Hank Williams Jr. has been left reeling after his daughter Katherine died in a car accident and his son Sam went off the rails -- Katie was only 27 when she was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Tennessee and now 23-year-old Sam is selling gifts from his dad like expensive jewelry and spending up a storm and boozing and fighting with his siblings

Director’s Cut: ‘Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion’ Director David Mirkin’s Shares His 10 Favorite Films
It’s been 20 years since Romy and Michele went to their 10-year high school reunion and created a beloved cult comedy that still feels fresh decades later (We’re still trying to nail that dance sequence).
To celebrate, we spoke with Romy and Michele Director David Mirkin to learn what films have stayed with him through the years:
The Graduate
“This is the film that made me want to be a director. Mike Nichols at his genius best.  Stunningly brilliant performances coupled with a  master class in staging and camera work. Fantastic script by Buck Henry from the incredible book by Charles Webb. One of the greatest performances in cinema history from Anne Bancroft.  Dustin Hoffman goes from unknown to iconic. Not a bad moment. Not a false note. Nothing gets better than this.”
Dr. Strangelove
“It’s really hard to pick just one Kubrick film. So I’ll sneak 2001 and Clockwork Orange into this paragraph too. See them. Each of Kubrick’s movies is a stand-alone film school. Strangelove has stunning black and white cinematography, multiple genius Peter Sellers and fall down funny performances by George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden, who is filled to the brim with precious bodily fluids.”
Goodfellas
“The best gangster film ever made. Peak Scorsese. Simultaneously terrifying and intensely funny - an extremely hard combination to pull off. Insanely great, perfect performance by Ray Liotta. Trying to sell drugs and guns while simultaneously attempting to prepare the perfect pasta sauce, all while coked out of your mind, is not only something everyone can relate to, it is also one of the best shot and edited sequences in the history of film.”
It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World
“Virtually every brilliant comic actor of the time giving hilarious performances mixed with ridiculously violent state-of-the-art (1964) car chases and stunts, energized by a beautiful symphonic score by Ernest Gold, all in glorious, fully immersive ultra-wide screen Cinerama (2.76 to 1) Technicolor. It blew my mind as a child and continues to pull me out of deep depressions to this day.”
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
“Monty Python are simply the Beatles of comedy. The TV series has never been bested in terms of hard-funny jokes per square inch and this movie proves that gritty, dark and dirty production can still be pants-pissing hilarious. No one commits to absurdity with more life or death seriousness than Python. It is a well known rule of cinema that anything with a bunny rabbit violently ripping blood-spurting heads off humans is high art.”
Days of Heaven
“Super funny.  Okay, maybe not but this may be the most amazingly beautiful film ever shot. When I first saw it, I said to myself, I want all my movies to look just like this. Then I found out that director  Terrance Malik and cinematographer Nestor Almendros only shot for about an hour a day at golden hour over the course of a year to achieve that look. Not super-practical when you really think about it and unlikely to ever happen again. But we can still watch this and dream. Oh and the Ennio Morricone score will casually rip your heart out.”
The Lady Eve
“So many comedies that followed owe a huge debt to writer/director Preston Sturges and this film. Barbara Stanwyck effortlessly proves that women could be strong, brilliant and incredibly funny over 76 years ago. Something that many studios still don’t seem to fully comprehend.”
Paper Moon/What’s Up Doc
“Both brilliantly directed by Peter Bogdanovitch, one right after the other, with many of the same brilliant actors playing very different roles, demonstrating effortless versatility. Lots of these folks were doing great Mel Brooks films at the time as well. No one on earth has ever been funnier than the comedy goddess, Madeline Kahn.”
Jaws
“All of Spielberg’s many gifts on display. Scary-funny in the best way. It is virtually impossible to stumble across this film playing on television at any point in the story and not watch it all the way through to the end. That’s the irresistible brilliance of the writing, directing and riveting performances.”
Raising Arizona
“To this day there is still nothing that compares to this film. A complete original. The gift to film that is the Coen brothers demonstrate a masterful combination of stunning camera work, insanely great writing and pitch-perfect direction of a stellar cast of very talented, very intelligent actors fully committing to drop-dead-serious idiocy.”
The Empire Strikes Back
“A little film few have heard of outside the snobbish Hollywood cinemaphile world. If you can find it, watch it and then send me a thank you for alerting you to its existence.”
Revisit Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion during the 20th anniversary sale, happening now on Amazon Video.

The Loss of Jonathan Demme
By Anthony Lane
A fellow named Melvin Dummar comes across this guy—“a strange ol’ weirdo wino, layin’ out in the middle of the desert,” with a busted shoulder and a bloody ear. Melvin hauls him into his pickup and drives him to Las Vegas, where the old man asks to go. Along the way, they talk and sing; after some coaxing, the passenger even croons “Bye Bye Blackbird.” Then, after thunder and rain, he rolls down his window and sniffs the air. “Greasewood and sage,” he says. Before they part, he asks for money, and Melvin hands over the contents of his pockets—a palmful of loose change. “That’s it,” he adds. “That’s all I got.”
Such is the prelude, both easygoing and far-reaching, to “Melvin and Howard” (1980). Melvin is played by Paul Le Mat, and Howard, if you trust the movie, is Howard Hughes, played by Jason Robards. The director is Jonathan Demme, who died on Wednesday, at the age of seventy-three. Everything that there was to like about Demme is present in the scene: the contagious warmth that he feels toward his characters; the appeal to all the senses, not excluding smell; the consoling thought that, wherever you are and whatever you’re doing, music should not be far away; and the life-giving mix of movement and stasis—two people just sitting there, revealing something of themselves, while the truck chews up the miles and the day breaks free of the night.
Most of the tributes paid to Demme, in the past few days, have marvelled at the range of goods that was stocked, as it were, in the storefront of his films. Try the early exploitation flicks of the nineteen-seventies, like “Caged Heat” and “Crazy Mama,” made under the aegis of Roger Corman. Or the antsy and energetic comedies of the eighties, “Married to the Mob” and “Something Wild,” succeeded, at the start of the following decade, by the solid studio pictures, “The Silence of the Lambs” and “Philadelphia,” that came away with Academy Awards. Dotted through Demme’s career, meanwhile, were the music videos and the music documentaries, which harkened to figures as disparate as Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young (twice), the Pretenders, and, of course, the Talking Heads, in the imperishable hipness of “Stop Making Sense” (1984). Only last year, Demme filmed Justin Timberlake and the Tennessee Kids in concert at the MGM Grand, in Las Vegas—not far from where the hobo billionaire of “Melvin and Howard” asked to be dropped off, at the rear of his own hotel.
This chop and change suggests a reluctance to settle, not merely in a choice of genres but often in the mood space of a single film. Nobody who saw “Something Wild,” in 1986, can ever forget the giddying swerve of the plot. Jeff Daniels, as Charlie, is hardly the first stiff to be loosened up by a dangerous dame (think of Henry Fonda in “The Lady Eve,” being led in a merry dance by Barbara Stanwyck), but in the hands of Demme, with the hard-staring help of Ray Liotta, the danger becomes a blood sport. A pair of Hitchcockian handcuffs serves first as an accessory to sex and then as a shackle to bind the hero while the villain, in the next room, plies his demonic trade. You want to know if screwball can be used as an offensive weapon? Look and learn.
As for “The Silence of the Lambs,” one cause of its endurance, and the reason that, however busy I may be, I am incapable of dragging myself away whenever it plays on TV, is that its contents shift with every viewing. As we follow Clarice Starling on her first visit to Hannibal Lecter, down the long walk past the other cells, we hear the deep churn of the musical theme, and our scalps, as ordained, begin to prickle; and what do we discover, behind the see-through wall? A sprightly figure, standing to greet the lady, as erect as a butler, with the spectre of a smile. The gourmet has found his amuse-gueule. From here on, the horror of the film will be garnished with comedy, while the comedy (and this is the creepiest touch of all) will bear the rich savor of romance. “People will say we’re in love,” Lecter says, when the young F.B.I. trainee returns to him later in the tale—for a tip, for a clinching clue, or because she can’t help herself. Their expressions, viewed head-on, fill the whole landscape of the screen. Each can see nothing but the other.
That stark composition returns, in very different circumstances, at the end of “Philadelphia,” when the dying man (Tom Hanks) bids farewell to his beloved (Antonio Banderas). Hanging over that film—so timely in 1993, and so dated now, for all its tender and well-meaning ambitions—is a sense that it was, in part, an act of atonement for “The Silence of the Lambs.” Charges of homophobia had been levelled at the character of Buffalo Bill, the killer whom Starling hunts, despite the fact that Demme took explicit pains, as Thomas Harris had done in the novel, to disclaim any link between violence and the transgender community. In consequence, there were protests at the time of release. To someone of Demme’s patent decency, those will have struck home.
The profession of movie director is not one that we instantly associate with the modest and the benign, but somehow, like Anthony Minghella, Demme rose through the ranks. What was a nice guy like him doing in a job like that? Well, he was schooled by Corman, a gentleman on the throne of schlock, who oversaw, with approval, the ascent of his many protégés. (The roster is laughably distinguished: Scorsese, Coppola, Nicholson, Stallone, and so forth. James Cameron designed the spaceship for the Corman-produced “Battle Beyond the Stars.”) To listen to Demme and Corman shoot the breeze, in their commentary on “Crazy Mama,” is like hearing a couple of veterans recalling their comrades-in-arms, without rancor or rivalry (“Jim Backus, Mr. Magoo, God bless him; he was a delight,” Demme says, scanning the credit sequence), and an ancient dispute about a montage is fondly laid to rest. What the master made plain, according to Demme, was that, “if you lose the viewer’s eye, you’re going to lose the viewer’s interest. He also stressed the importance of having as many characters as possible that are in every way just as interesting as your main characters, even if they get less screen time.”
That is a crucial creed, because it implies not simply a visual knack but a reserve of moral generosity. Between “The Silence of the Lambs” and “Philadelphia,” Demme made “Cousin Bobby,” about Robert Castle, an Episcopalian minister in Harlem: a firebrand built like a fortress. I still remember Demme standing in the frame, arms folded, putting questions to his cousin and watching him at work, even if the matter in hand was something as prosaic as a pothole. There was a persistent liberal ardor to Demme’s politics (witness his 2007 film about Jimmy Carter), but he was also blessed by a larger liberalism: the imaginative outreach, hard to discern in the rampant studio movies of today, which assumes that everybody is worth stopping for—that there will always be folks who repay the camera’s attention. What he radiated, before or behind the lens, was an unstinting curiosity, and a faith that the most reliable map of character was the human face.
That faith, rather than nepotism, led him to cast the Reverend Castle in five more films—first “Philadelphia,” then “Beloved” (1998), “The Truth About Charlie” (2002), “The Manchurian Candidate” (2004), and “Rachel Getting Married” (2008). The last of these, starring Anne Hathaway, found favor in some quarters, yet its fretfulness seemed a small thing when set beside the shimmying tensions of “Something Wild,” and even Demme loyalists had to admit that the later movies suffered an unaccountable loss of pressure. “The Truth About Charlie,” especially, looked all the more forlorn because it was a remake of “Charade,” and there is no known galaxy in which Mark Wahlberg could be an adequate substitute for Cary Grant. Not too many people saw “Ricki and the Flash” (2015), Demme’s final feature, despite the zest of Meryl Streep as the middle-aged rocker of the title, yet the movie is worth revisiting, in the wake of Demme’s passing, because it proves that his inquisitive eye had lost little of its gleam. He was, among his other talents, a terrific picker of extras, and as Ricki performs in bars, or at family gatherings, he dishes up, in passing glimpses, a fine assortment of his fellow-citizens.
Demme was a man for small towns and back roads. He liked those pockets of America where there was fun to be had, at a bargain price, and weakness to be gently laid bare. Hence his penchant for Melvin, a near-loser with a wish list of hopes, and for the tallness of Melvin’s tale. Whether the Howard he came across, that night in the desert, really was Howard Hughes, as legend insists, was not the sort of conundrum to bother Demme, and I doubt if he gave a damn whether the infamous “Mormon will”—in which, years later, Hughes allegedly left more than a hundred and fifty million dollars to Melvin in gratitude for his Samaritan deed, like a mega-Magwitch rewarding Pip—was the genuine article or a fake. What Demme knew for certain, because his grip on our everyday fears and fancies was so secure, is that we want to believe Melvin, and that Melvin, the poor dope, wants to believe himself. The stories that we tell, in other words, may not always be true, and yet they are true of us, and that will have to do. The loss of Jonathan Demme is a sad surprise, for the films that he bequeaths to us remain, to an uncommon degree, the work of a good man.

1) Goodfellas (stylized as GoodFellas) is a 1990 American biographical crime film directed by Martin Scorsese. It is a film adaptation of the 1986 non-fiction book Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scorsese. The film narrates the rise and fall of mob associate Henry Hill (the first-person narrator in the film) and his friends over a period from 1955 to 1980.Scorsese initially named the film Wise Guy and postponed making it; later, he and Pileggi changed the name to Goodfellas.
To prepare for their roles in the film, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Ray Liotta often spoke with Pileggi, who shared research material left over from writing the book. According to Pesci, improvisation and ad-libbing came out of rehearsals wherein Scorsese gave the actors freedom to do whatever they wanted. The director made transcripts of these sessions, took the lines he liked best, and put them into a revised script, which the cast worked from during principal photography.Made on a budget of $25 million, Goodfellas grossed $46.8 million.
It received positive reviews from critics and was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, with Pesci winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role. Scorsese's film won five awards from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, including Best Film and Best Director. Additionally,Goodfellas was named the year's best film by various critics' groups.Goodfellas is widely regarded as one of the greatest films in the crime genre. In 2000, it was deemed "culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant" and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.
Its content and style have been emulated in numerous other films and television shows. Scorsese followed this film with two more about organized crime: Casino (1995) and The Departed (2006). (from Wikipedia)
2) The Die Hard series is an American action film series that began in 1988 with Die Hard, based on the 1979 novel Nothing Lasts Forever by Roderick Thorp.
The series follows the adventures of John McClane (portrayed by Bruce Willis), a New York City andLos Angeles police detective who continually finds himself in the middle of violent crises and intrigues where he is the only hope against disaster
Although the first Die Hard has been credited as one of the greatest action movies of all time, critical reaction to its sequels has varied.
The original Die Hard received substantial praise. Pete Croatto of FilmCritic.com called the film "a perfect action movie in every detail, the kind of movie that makes your summer memorable." James Berardinelli wrote that the film "represents the class of modern action pictures and the standard by which they must be judged."
Critic Desson Howe wrote that "Willis has found the perfect vehicle to careen wildly onto the crowded L.A. freeway of Lethal Weapons and Beverly Hills Cops." Willis was also called "perfect as the wisecracking John McClane" and "an excellent casting choice as a sardonic action hero."
Alan Rickman's portrayal of villain Hans Gruber was described as "marvelous" and "a career-making performance."] Gruber also ranked 46 on the villain side of AFI's 100 Years...100 Heroes and Villains. In 2007,
Entertainment Weekly ranked Die Hard the greatest action film of all time                                           (from Wikipedia)
3) Slaughterhouse-Five is a 1972 anti-war/sci fi film based on Kurt Vonnegut's novel of the same name about a writer who tells a story in random order of how he was a soldier in World War II and was abducted by aliens.
The screenplay is by Stephen Gellerand the film was directed by George Roy Hill.
It stars Michael Sacks, Ron Leibman, and Valerie Perrine, and features Eugene Roche, Sharon Gans, Holly Near, and Perry King.
The scenes set in Dresden were filmed in Prague. The other scenes were filmed in Minnesota.
Vonnegut wrote about the film soon after its release, in his preface to Between Time and Timbuktu:"I love George Roy Hill and Universal Pictures, who made a flawless translation of my novel Slaughterhouse-Five to the silver screen ... I drool and cackle every time I watch that film, because it is so harmonious with what I felt when I wrote the book."
The film follows the novel in presenting a first-person narrative from the point of view of Billy Pilgrim (Sacks), who becomes "unstuck in time" and experiences the events of his life in a seemingly random order, including a period spent on the alien planet of Tralfamadore. Particular emphasis is placed on his experiences during World War II, including the firebombing of Dresden, as well as time spent with fellow prisoners of war Edgar Derby (Roche) and the psychopathic Paul Lazzaro (Leibman). His life as a husband to Valencia (Gans), and father to Barbara (Near) and Robert (King) are also depicted, as they live and sometimes even enjoy their life of affluence in Ilium, New York. A "sink-or-swim" scene with Pilgrim's father is also featured. The scenes of extraterrestrial life on Tralfamadore feature Hollywood starlet Montana Wildhack (Perrine). (from Wikipedia)

The city has announced plans  to build a performing arts center dedicated to Immigrants. The proposed Immigrant Research and Performing Arts Center will go up in Inwood, the northernmost neighborhood in Manhattan
Meanwhile, Waterwell theater company and the Broadway Advocacy Coalition launched the  Flores Exhibits, now available online, part of a national campaign to establish legal protections for immigrant children held in U.S. government facilities. Named after the  1997 Flores Settlement Agreement that set a limit on the length of time a child can be detained — an agreement that the Trump Administration wants to rescind — the exhibits are a series of videos read by about a dozen actors from David Schwimmer to Elizabeth Rodriguez and theater artists such as playwright David Henry Hwang and costume designer Clint Ramos, along with  lawyers and advocates. They each read aloud the sworn testimony of experts and also of young people detained at the Clint and Ursula border detention facilities that were collected in June of this year by a team of immigration lawyers.
“Many of the detainees were teen mothers, already being exposed to tremendous trauma in their home countries,” Kathleen Chalfant reads the testimony of  pediatrician Dr. Dolly Lucio Sevier, who examined the detainees…The conditions in which they are being held could be compared to torture facilities….extreme cold temperatures, lights on 24 hours a day, no access to medical care, basic sanitation, water or adequate food….To deny parents the ability to wash their infant’s bottles is unconscionable, and could be considered intentional mental and emotional abuse.”

As Much As I Can
“As Much As I Can,” a show that illustrates the continuing AIDS crisis among African-American men, exists on two different planes, which are not in complete alignment with one another. It is a work of theater, running for just five days at Joe’s Pub (two final performances this evening.) The 14-member cast is largely comprised of professional New York stage actors.
But it is also an effort at outreach. The script, credited to Sarah Hall, is based on interviews with hundreds of men in two communities hard hit by HIV — Baltimore, Maryland and Jackson, Mississippi

Novenas for a Lost Hospital
How do people care for one another in dangerous times? That’s the still-relevant question underlying this beautiful, sad, enraging, uplifting, and awesomely staged theater piece that sweeps through the 161-year history of St. Vincent’s Hospital in Greenwich Village, dwelling on two traumatic periods the cholera epidemic, during which four nuns from the Sisters of Charity founded the hospital in 1849, and the AIDS epidemic that surrounded it in the 1980s and 90s….There are many personal reasons why I considered “Novenas” a must-see…

The Invention of Tragedy
“The Invention of Tragedy,” a 70-minute excursion into a puzzling world of word play, cat ears, and synchronized neon footwear, is the third of the five plays in the Mac Wellman festival at The Flea. What I like best about it is the title. This would not be the work I would personally choose as the ideal introduction for a first-time Wellman watcher. Yet there are three ways of looking at “The Invention of Tragedy” that offer some satisfactions – as a political parable, as a metaphor for Western theater,  or as entertaining nonsense full of such surface pleasures as colorful design, pleasing music and an appealing cast.
Book: Discovering the Clown
Christopher Bayes, founder of the Funny School of Good Acting in Brooklyn and professor and head of physical acting at the Yale School of Drama,…offers  many zany Zen-like observations and instructions in “Discovering the Clown,” a brief, off-beat book that attempts to translate Bayes’ teaching to the printed page, but is more effective as a tease for his classes.

“Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” the fifth Broadway production of Albee’s 1962 play about George and Martha (& Nick and Honey) w/ Rupert Everett, Laurie Metcalf, Patsy Ferran, Russell Tovey. It opens April 9th at the Booth
Laurence Fishburne and Sam Rockwell will star in the fourth Broadway production of David Mamet’s rat-a-tat 1977 play about three low-level crooks conjuring up a get-rich-quick scheme. It opens April 14, though no theater yet (nor website nor Twitter!)
This apparently takes up the slot planned by the same producers for the all-female production of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glenn Ross? Its producers say it has been delayed until the 2020-2021 season.
Sara Holdren is leaving her post as the theater critic at New York Magazine in early October to go back to directing.  She was hired in July 2017.
