MYTHIKA's HOUSE SPIRITS
All the house spirits in these AI pictures are too large, but for some reason they won't give them the proper size, but these creatures are the size of a human child, also ignore the limbs, they probably have 2 more toes, only one feet and so on, but that is AI for you lol, these are just good indications on how they look a bit in Mythika.
Blue = Domovoi, it is the standard house spirit and protects the home, unlike the kind Brownie it will ask for offerings, if not given it turns hostile and violent.
Red = Ovinnik, hostile red house spirit, it looks kinda demonic and cat-like in the face, it starts fires, small at first, but when it is bored with the house it will burn it to the ground if it isn't removed by force. They also are said to bring bad luck to the house as long as they are there.
Yellow = Bannik, strange yellow haired house spirit, it mostly resides in bathhouses and emerges from the water in lakes, wells and even from the water used in houses, it is tricky, sometimes it helps but mostly it just plays with the feelings and flesh (burning it with hot water) of it's playthings.
Green = Leshy, while they are of the house spirit family, and look pretty much like them, they are residing in the forest around the houses and are more often found in and around cabins in the woods, they are tricksters and love playing tricks, they also protect the forests and the cabins they choose to protect against any interloper, sometimes even being hostile to the residents visitors. The worst thing a Leshy can do is turn you into a plant.
Grey = Bodach, these evil house spirits are also half bogeymen, they first scare the younger residents of a home with scary nightly visits from the chimney, then after they get bored with their prey they will eventually kidnap them and feast on their flesh by turning it slowly into ash. These are even more hostile than the Ovinnik.
Pink = Albastor, these pink haired and skinned House Spirits are full of lust, they travel in the form of falling stars and mostly appear in bath houses and around inns to kidnap beautiful creatures for their sick amusement.
Brown = Brownie, the most kind of the House Spirits, they help the residents with all tasks in the house and protect it against all evil and other house spirits, fights between Brownies and Domovoi are legendary!

I have no idea how to adapt the wordplay into English...
"Get off the needle of social approval and sit on the devil's face" in Russian, "sit on a needle - сесть на иглу" is exactly to become addicted to the use, so here is a pun: sit on a needle = sit on the face
and actually the original image was a Reebok commercial :0
Woland: I'll be by your side until this nightmare is over
Master: But all this shit is happening because of you
the moment from the book where Woland trolled the barman
(12:05 a.m.)
Woland: Come on in! Don't be shy! Can I help you? :)
And again background information. In Slavic mythology people can not go into the banya after 12 o'clock at night, because at this time the banya is occupied by all the evil to wash themselves. Usually the main in the banya spirit-Bannik, which just and summons all the evil around. But there are variants, where instead of him in the bath sits the Devil. "You can even hear fascinating stories about how a man steamed in the banya at midnight and encountered a stranger there. And when this stranger left the banya, he left hoof prints on the ground after him, instead of the usual human footprints. "

The Ovinnik [Slavic mythology; Russian myths]
Slavic and Russian folklore has several domestic spirits, such as the Domovoi and the Bannik. They could be either kind or malicious, but the most dangerous of them was the Ovinnik.
This creature resided in threshing barns, which is where the straw is separated from the edible grain. These buildings were highly flammable and therefore associated with danger and death, which is possibly where the idea came from that a dangerous spirit lives there (or perhaps, and this is just conjecture, the Ovinnik was made up by parents to dissuade children from playing there). In northern Russia, the threshing barn was located a good distance away from the rest of the farmstead, to prevent it from lighting the other buildings on fire should the barn’s furnace accidentally ignite the straw (note: the furnace was used to dry the grain).
Usually, an Ovinnik took the form of a particularly large black cat. Its eyes were red and glowed like burning coals. Other times, these spirits appeared as large wolves. In other sources, the Ovinnik is often portrayed as a human-like creature sitting close to a furnace.
It was the Ovinnik spirit who oversaw the use of the furnace: he forbade the people from lighting it on certain holidays, as well as days with a particularly strong wind. If the people ignored his warnings, he would burn the entire thing to the ground. One story, for example, is about a woman who beat flax on a sacred day and was burned to death as a punishment. In another tale, a farmer outsmarted the spirit and cast it into a burning fire, giving the Ovinnik a taste of its own medicine. But the creature survived and returned years later. Out of vengeance, it killed the farmer’s son.
Aside from burning farmstead to ashes, the Ovinnik had the ability to see into the future and could be consulted at the start of a new year. The spirit received offerings from the people, such as roosters that were decapitated and their blood sprinkled over the corners of the barn.
Although these beings were undoubtedly dangerous, they weren’t always evil. In one story, the spirit found a child who was being chased by the undead ghost of an old woman. The Ovinnik fought the ghost to protect the kid, and the two spirits clashed until the sun rose. In other versions, the spirit is sometimes called Rigačnik and this version offers protection from evil wizards. While this is a different version of the same being, its appearance differs a bit: a Rigačnik appears as a man with short, curly hair dressed in stained, torn clothing. He actively helps the owners of the farmstead.
Eventually, Christianity influenced the local folklore and mythology and the tale of the Ovinnik was among them. The Christians tried to change the public opinion of the Ovinnik by making it into a bogeyman that could only be seen during the morning service on Easter Sunday. However, people kept making offerings to the Ovinnik as a spirit of the furnace. Eventually, the Ovinnik was changed to a kind of Christian protective spirit, and that is why he forbids people from using the furnace on (Christian) sacred holidays, such as Saint Thekla Zarevnica’s holiday, which is the 23rd of September. Eventually, the Domovoy (which is possibly the most popular and well known Slavic household spirit) adopted the traits and functions of the Ovinnik and other similar spirits.

Mythic Creatures by Culture & Region
Part 5: East Europe, Northwest Asia
Europeans often think that East Europe and Northwest Asia is simply Slavic: if Poles, Czechs, Russians and many Balkan people are Slavic, surely all the areas of East and Southeast Europe must be Slavic. And if West Asia has Indo-Germanic languages and cultures, surely those must be Slavic too? Well no.
So here is an exhaustive list of Wikipedia's creatures for people who just get lumped in as "Slavic" when they are, in fact, from totally different cultures. While browsing Wikipedia, I also learned that there is a autonomous Buddhist European Republic run by descendants of the Mongol horde in Eastern Europe, something I was utterly unaware of (probably because they are incorporated into Russia, but also because I have some biases to work on).

More info under the cut!
банник/bannik (Slavic):
bannik is a mischievous bathhouse spirit. he can appear as a naked bearded old man, or as some animals, and his favourite thing to do is to bathe after several people have already used the bathhouse, and to only use the dirty water for bathing. he does that closer to midnight, and he doesn't like to be disturbed, so people avoided going to the bathhouse at night.
he also doesn't like when people enter the bathhouse with dirty thoughts, without a prayer, or without respecting the rules of the bathhouse. as a mischievous spirit, he can deal quite a lot of damage: he can throw rocks at those who angered him, burn with boiling water, and even flay people alive.
there is a way to ensure he will remain friendly, though: you should always leave a small piece of soap and a small bath broom after you are done bathing. you can also leave some milk, or if you need him extra calm - you can grab and kill a black hen from your backyard and leave it in the bathhouse without plucking.
The Witch of Rehmeyer's Hollow (USA - Pennsylvania):
(Note: The linked article refers to the house itself. Theres no section specifically on the list, but go to "Murder of Nelson Reymeyer" for background)
The witch's real name is Nelson Rehmeyer and he was supposed to be a practitioner of a certain brand of Pennsylvania Dutch-influenced witchcraft. He was suspected of supposedly hexing a local resident, who confronted him to demand his spellbook and hair to reverse the hex and ended up beating Rehmeyer to death.
The man then attempted to burn his house down but it would not burn, which was taken as further evidence of his powers. It's considered to be extremely haunted even today and young people still fear to go there.

additional notes / divergences for koschei's winternight verse
re the ghost & koschei's life force: tamara was bound to become a ghost not because koschei's life force was bound to her ( it's with medved, but he's happy to allow you to think that ! ) but because yaga shut the door on all the roads to them. they are earth bound. no one, not even morozko knows or remembers the reason for this except the ones who witnessed koschei kill dazbog (yaga & the midnight demon). koschei used this assumption to his advantage so the stone could be destroyed, his death faked (so he could scheme in buyan on the low), and the roads open again to both him and tamara. she could finally find peace, and he could finally finish what he started.
re koschei's deaths & fake death: prior to the counter spell, when koschei dies he falls and his body rises again after a certain time (with him needing to patch himself up like a fucking zombie). once he regains entry into buyan, upon a death, he disintegrates and his body reanimates fresh and new from the water of life aka the lake of buyan. this is what happened when he "died" at the tower. hence the lake chyerti's skepticism when vasya said she killed him. ofc koschei rules the chyerti through fear, and has for centuries while still bound to rus', so none (or very few) would dare to be the one to tell her he was alive. they might aid, but most were watching and waiting to see who'd end up on top before risking their necks like that.
re the return to moscow: also following the book, he honestly wasn't expecting to find tamara in the tower and hadn't thought of the consequences of yaga's banishment on someone who could die (the emotional reaction to seeing her was genuine). but the fact that he says he had been to moscow before because of a woman and lost something there should then raise bells that he wasn't talking about tamara !! he truly had no clue where she went or he would have attempted this counter spell much sooner with her.
re koschei & young marya: this should go without saying, but deviating from the books, koschei did not intend to kidnap a child marya for marriage. he kidnapped her temporarily bc he needed a descendent of yaga's bloodline to charge up his jewel for the counter spell and obviously a child was the easier option to subdue for this compared to vasya (but again, it's fine for anyone to make assumptions bc they wouldn't know his true plot). there was no romantic intent there.
in fact, koschei likely heard his own prophecy from a bannik that his death would someday belong to marya (which marya? he doesn't know, but he knows her name), so your boy was likely contemplating killing her first from the start. her being just a child ofc weighed on his very limited conscience so he may have threatened to take her away and mentor her to join his forces someday after seeing how strong she was, and/or decided to wait to see what happens when she comes of age, and kill her then if she does turn out to be a #problem
re the tartars & burning villages: koschei approached them and convinced them to help him by sharing that he was a turkic descendent of a famous polovtsy khan (plus enemy of my enemy is my friend, etc.); however there were very clear tensions between kasyan and chelubey. it was a messy arrangement and kasyan had a hard time controlling and ordering them to do as he said. he wanted to ambush & loot the surrounding principalities military stockpiles & agricultural resources to weaken them in the battle that was to come (and he did), but the intentional burning and killing of normal civilians and capture of girl children was not by his order. of course in conspiring with the tartars and starting this whole mess, the blood is regretfully on his hands. but it leaves room for him to turn on the tartars later on to at least begin to make up for it.
re vasya's exposure: he did consider making vasya an ally after the sunfeast, but when that didn't pan out for them in time. he exposed vasya's ruse after the race to avoid her giving away chelubey's identity too soon. the creepiness that followed was not something my koschei would do. the ladies of the terem or even sasha could confirm the truth or someone else may have taken things too far, but not him. however, he was fine with riling the crowd into a revolt and was bordering between respecting vasya's mettle and wanting to pay morozko back with the same currency. in other words let her burn the way yelena did and see him suffer for it the way he did.
and those are all the divergences for the most part ! not to woobify or diminish his villainy but since his motivation is more power, revenge, and controlling buyan than a creepy obsession with tamara, and given his background as a slave and someone who was once at the bottom, i don't think those would be the people he'd seek to target and harm. his quarrel was with the boyars, princes and the church, and he's an extremely tactical thinker, so the military resources would be the things he'd have the tartars go for. the deviations from the plan were by chelubey's encouragement and koschei did kill some of the tartars to make a statement about who's actually in charge. however, he can still be blamed for continuing to work with them and other things (all the deaths medved caused when he woke him and instigating the witch burning etc.) but i draw the line at him ordering the killing of women and children, s.a., and child marriages. no moral grayness or hope for redemption at that point.
#whew i promise this is the last brain dump about this verse but needed to clarify these points#now we write ! (after work) and also plot bc i'd love cross overs in this verse ! his scheming spans 300 years so#there was much he was up to while earth bound too and a point when he was somewhat Normal and human which is fun#♔ . ⧽ lore * 𝔴𝔦𝔫𝔱𝔢𝔯𝔫𝔦𝔤𝔥𝔱#♔ . ⧽ v. winternight * 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔯𝔢𝔡 𝔰𝔬𝔯𝔠𝔢𝔯𝔢𝔯 𝔴𝔦𝔩𝔩 𝔴𝔞𝔨𝔢 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔰𝔩𝔢𝔢𝔭𝔢𝔯 & 𝔰𝔦𝔩𝔢𝔫𝔠𝔢 𝔱𝔥𝔢 𝔟𝔢𝔩𝔩𝔰

Love me some Esther Friesner books. Good stuff, even for the poor souls who don't know what a bannik is, let alone a bean sidhe.
I think the most unintentionally pretentious part of me is I genuinely forget that most people do not have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of mythology and folklore. I literally just assume most people know at least the name of every Greek god. My mom and I were watching the Banshees of Inisherin and at the start, she asked "Do you know what a banshee is?" and I was so stunned because it would never occur to me to ask that question because I would never assume the average person doesn't know what a banshee is. The average person knows what a banshee is right. You know what a banshee is right. You know the names of the greek gods right. You know that norse myth where loki fucked the horse right. Right. RIGHT
