Accidental Dad!Kenpachi (Bleach) Adopts Shimura Tenko (BNHA)

Because we need more people-adopting-Tenko stories other than the Midoriya fam and AFO doing all the work.

If Kenpachi adopted Yachiru in Bleach canon, then he can collect more kids to (forcefully) adopt. Imagine accidentally daddy! Kenpachi in the BNHA 'verse. Adopt (or mentor) all the troubled kids with strong spirits. Accidental fix-it.

Tenko, Touya, Bakugou, Shinso...

The potential list goes on.

The pairings? With people who like to fight or are good at fighting. Gotta have strong spirits. Endeavor, Aizawa, Stain, etc.

As we all know, I am Perpetually Rewatching Bleach, and I hit the Reigai Arc a while ago, but I didn’t feel like recapping it, because recaps are a ton of work and I am Tired, but Bleach 333 might be the Bleachiest episode in all of Bleach, so I had to.

In the immortal words of Gideon the Ninth: “Things were happening too much.”

So, this is pretty deep into the arc-- all the lieutenants are in the World of the Living and all the (real) captains are in Soul Society, Nozomi has just unlocked her zanpakutou, and Reigai Zaraki and Byakuya showed up to start shit.

At the end of the last episode, all the lieutenants put their reiatsu in Nozomi’s sword (why does some variation of this happen every filler arc??) and she blew up Zaraki and Byakuya. The episode opens with Renji muttering “Did we get ‘em?” which is really how every episode should open. It looks like they successfully KO’d Zaraki, but Reigai Byakuya survived, and he proceeds to take out all the lieutenants with a single Soren Sokatsui.

This seems bad, but then, the Captain Commander shows up out of nowhere and sets Reigai Byakuya on fire. Yes. Really.

Ichigo and Rukia get Yamamoto up to date, but the best part of this scene is that Renji is just...lying there in the middle of it, like a sleepy boi.

All of sudden, more Reigai show up, and there’s a split screen reaction shot, but... it’s just of the unconscious lieutenants. Friends, I literally screamed. They made this episode just for me. We’re also going to start counting SSRS’s, because this episode has... a lot of them.

I also want to point out the Ichigo, Nozomi and Kon seem to be entirely uninjured; Rukia, Chad and Uryuu are able to get themselves up, Renji is Hanging In There, and all the other lieutenants are toast. I am pretty sure this Says Something About the Lieutenant Class.

Oh God, there is so much Peak Renij Dialogue in this episode.

At this point, Renji attempts to sit up, and falls down again.Good hustle, buddy, you tried.

Somewhere around here, my husband got up to let the dog out and he said, “pause it if anything good happens.” I had to pause it almost immediately because Reigai Ukitake and Kyouraku showed up and then this happened:

There’s like 4 minutes straight of releasing, literally everything is on fire, and after being told to stay back like 5 times, Nozomi jumps into battle and we get split screen reaction shot #2.

Nozomi attacks Kyouraku and Ichigo goes after Ukitake. Yamamoto literally grumbles “Those darn kids...” and then Unohana comes out of nowhere and casts four different binding in a row on Yamamoto while an electric bass guitar plays. I say this all the time, but this is exactly how I would fight if I were a shinigami fighting another shinigami: just bind the fuck out of them and then attack them while they’re down. This scene was incredibly gratifying to me, Unohana is the GOAT.

How’s Renji doing?

Keep working at it, you’re doing great, pal.

The true purpose of filler arcs is more fights for characters that we didn’t get to see fight enough, and this episode delivers with some excellent Kyouraku and Ukitake throw-downs. Whoops, here’s reaction shot #3:

Because his spiritual energy has been on its last legs this whole arc, Ichigo is supposed to use his powers very carefully, for example, not going to bankai or using Getsugas, except when he can’t think of anything else, which is constantly. #4.

Did I mention that Fake Ukitake and Fake Kyouraku are Very Real Husbands this episode? Because they are.

We cut back to Rukia and Renji (still prone) and Kon. Kon is Big Sad because he can’t help. I have no love for Kon, but I respect this great compliment he lays on Rukia after she punches him.

Rukia and Renji decide they gotta go help and-- and Renji is UP! The man is up!

Except that Yamamoto abruptly busts out of his wards and Rukia has to breathlessly gasp “What is this reiatsu?” as per her contract.

SHIT FAM the real Unohana is here and she’s got Dramatic Singers! Fake Unohana is literally about to pee herself and so would you if you say this coming for you:

Split Screen Reaction Shot #5: Karakura Kids Edition

Then, um this happened.

AHEM.

This was my favorite SSRS in the episode because it was kinda high concept. Rukia starts talking in the left panel, but you can still see her arm moving the middle panel. Didn’t they do this in Pacific Rim, with the heads-up displays? Or maybe that was Voltron. I don’t care, I love this shit.

Anyway, when Renji picks up the dialogue, BAM, he takes over the middle.

The fireball has done nothing to the Reigai, so we get a walking-thru-flames drama shot that ends with... yet another SSRS.

They start to attack Yamamoto who is 1000% ready to throw down, but then Kageroza shows up and declares that he will be taking on the old man himself.

Ichigo gets real concerned that Kageroza will use Yamamoto’s power against him (Yamamoto is like, ‘whatever’). Nozomi volunteers to act like a decoy, and Kageroza does his villainous laugh, “you’ll never steal my spiritual pressure-- NANI??”  It turns out Nozomi already charged her sword up with the Head Captain’s spiritual pressure when Kageroza...was...checking his phone? I do not know how me missed this sneaky, sneaky maneuver:

I guess he didn’t see anything because they were behind Ichigo’s back. Sure. Fine. Whatever.

Anyway, it’s not enough, so Yamamoto attacks. That’s not enough, so Ichigo unleashes his final Getsuga (not, like, the Final Getsuga, just like, the last one he has. Very confusing naming scheme here.)

Does this count as another SSRS? It doesn’t do the BAM/BAM/BAM, so maybe Rukia/Renji/Kon have been in split screen mode this entire time, and it’s just a revisit. Whatever, I’m gonna count it. We’re up to 8.

Ichigo is now spent. He mumbles “Did I get ‘im?” and then falls out of the sky.

“I NEED RENJI TO CATCH HIM,” I scream, while my husband winces and pinches the bridge of his nose. “GET UP, RENJI!” I yell. “YOU CAN DO IT.”

He’s thinkin’ about it!

Oh, no, Ichigo, did not, in fact, “get ‘im.” Kageroza appears to have survived, which I guess justifies a SSRS #9.

Look at Renji’s face. He’s ready. He’s goin’.

And he’s off!!!! I LOVE THIS MAN.

UGH, we have to sit through Kageroza explaining how he survived the attack by absorbing Nozomi’s attack and Ichigo’s Getsuga who cares who cares who cares, get to the good stuff--

Kageroza is powering up his attack, we’re gonna get the “To Be Continued..” any second, but NO there is STILL TIME FOR ONE MORE!

Ten. TEN. This episode is only 22 minutes long and they managed to fit in 10 split screen reaction shots. I suspect this may be the record.

This entire episode was just split screen reactions shots, people powering up, shots of my OTP, and Renji catching Ichigo and then cradling him lovingly. Perfect episode. 1000/10.

What also made me WHEEZE was that the villain (forgot his name lol) said that he would come back when Ichigo was happiest...and when did he come back ? When Rukia visited!!! Renji and Inoue where in the background and said nothing.The ending sucked overall tbh with Ishida and Chad being what they hated and promised not to be,Orihime not following a career like an astronaut or teacher(which she mentioned in the dreaded confession)tbh Ichirukis didnt need the canon we had the whole manga,had honeymoon cover, 1000 blades and red string of fate and shoujo bubbles.They made so much sense!! I do agree that ih gives similar vibes to destiel what with Rukia/Sam taking priority and being soulmates to Dean/Ichigo and Cas/Inoue feeling excluded. What made me mad is that they were so perfect together even Orihime knew that Rukia was special to Ichigo. Tite Kubo KNEW what he wrote im still baffled by his decision to make ih canon instead...

The villain's name is Yhwach I believe (how does one even pronounce that send halp) and it's fine!!!! GO OFF FAM I'M WITH YOU. And good god you're so right that the ending was a disservice to everyone. I feel so sad when I think about how Ichigo said he wanted to protect a mountain load of people and then he got downgraded to,,,,,,, whatever the heck he got downgraded to in the final chapter. My boy Ishida deserved so much better too ugh. Orihime got Cassified so hard oh my god. Girl had so many dreams but ultimately got reduced to a satellite love interest for Ichigo and he didn't even love her back 💀 She was simping so hard it's embarrassing. And that's exactly why I agree with you that IH and destiew and IR and wincest have a lot of parallels!!!! I'm so glad I'm not the only one to see that 😭 God remember how in Fade To Black everyone forgot about Rukia bc their memories of her got wiped? BUT ICHIGO REMEMBERED HER. JUST LIKE HOW DEAN REMEMBERED SAM IN REGARDING DEAN AAAAAAAAAAAA. You're so right! I don't need IR to be canon bc I have the entire MANGA on my side (and extra materials from the anime to boot) 💅 Like Rukia's entire "That's the kind of man you are in my heart!" speech to Ichigo??? Those 7 lonely months Ichigo spent being utterly miserable without Rukia (heeeey almost like how Dean was miserable when he was with Lisa and without Sam amirite)??? Ichigo gaining bankai for her??? The fucking poems??? THE SHOUJO BUBBLES??? Man I could go on and on and on about how perfect they are for each other. Idk what kind of crack cocaine Kubo was on or what beef he had with Shounen Jump at the time he drew the final chapter, but dude could write romance like no other, man, and yet he fucked up big time. He had something so special and he mucked it up smh. But again, no biggie, bc like you said, even Orihime knows that Rukia is special to Ichigo. She said so herself that Rukia isn't just a "friend", she changed Ichigo's whole world. Girl knew she was a third wheel for life. Just like Cass 😂😂😂

Do you think Aizen was over powered? Or is that just me?

As he is first properly introduced (by stopping Ichigo’s bankai with one finger, without complete hypnosis, in an unreleased state) Aizen is absurdly overpowered. It’s strongly implied that he is already operating at a Letzt Stil or Mugetsu kinda level.

This goes on up to the point where he could’ve effortlessly killed Ichigo had he wanted to, when he touched his heart. Except then he suddenly isn’t overpowered at all. Isshin completely hands his ass to him in normal combat until the Hougyoku activates, with even Aizen admitting he’s at his limits as a Shinigami. There is no indication that this was an illusion, nor any real reason for it to have been one.

So, Aizen is vastly stronger than Ichigo and Byakuya, but is weaker than Isshin? So Isshin is also vastly stronger than Ichigo and Byakuya? But Isshin is on about the level of Ryuuken.

Does that mean Ryuuken could’ve popped into Soul Society at any time and Letzt Stil’d out and sniped Aizen from a thousand miles away effortlessly since he was never under the influence of Kyouka Suigetsu?

Power-scaling in Bleach is weird and doesn’t make a lot of sense because you’re left with the sense that Isshin, Ryuuken, Yoruichi, and Kisuke were all vastly stronger than pretty much everyone else in the Gotei 13 except maybe Juushirou, Shunsui, Retsu, and Yamamoto, but they just… never did anything… and then Yamamoto is supposed to be a whole ‘nother level above everyone else but also just does nothing.

But later we’re supposed to believe that all these captains caught up with just a few months of training to be on about the level of Juushirou, Shunsui, and Retsu, and they still can’t win against the Sternritter, and then our mains are even higher still, with the battle against Yhwach in particular basically occurring on some higher-dimensional level.

It’s stupid. The power-creep is insane and doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

But yes, to begin with, Aizen is absurdly overpowered against most people and then basically has an UNO Reverse Card against the people he isn’t overpowered against.

… Except for Ryuuken, who never saw his power and should be able to instakill him, but narratively isn’t allowed to act (even against a man who wants to kill him and destroy everything he’s built, despite being an ardent materialist) because he’s not a main character.

In fact, as I think about it:

Throughout the war with Aizen, Ryuuken has every reason to get involved because his life, livelihood, and works are directly threatened by Aizen. He does nothing.

Throughout the Xcution arc, Ryuuken has every reason to get involved because Tsukishima and Ginjou ganked his son and are bringing down a lot of bad news on his neighborhood. He does nothing.

Throughout the TYBW arc, Ryuuken has every reason to get involved because the rest of his people have become deviants, have kidnapped his son, and are led by his wife’s killer. He does nothing.

Ryuuken, narratively, really should’ve been the protagonist of Bleach. He got the John Wick call and he was just like, “Nah, fam, I’m gonna be Bartleby, the Scrivener instead.”

…I think it’d be kinda cool to have a manga where our point-of-view characters are not the real heroes of the story and they just have to kind of watch in terror as the actual hero is in the background fucking shit up.

your character meta is a++ which is why I was wondering: do you have any bankai hcs for the characters who never got them in canon? because I think about this literally ALL THE TIME. (I’m thinking specifically momo, izuru, rangiku, and yumichika, who were absolutely ROBBED in that final arc+time skip. shuuhei doesn’t count because he got a novel all to himself). also please picture momo barbecuing aizen to a crisp with her flamethrower of a bankai, thank u for coming to my ted talk

So, the short answer (which I am sure is not the one you’re looking for) is… nope. Not the kind you think, anyway, but I am thinking about it today, Anon, just for you.

I think about character stuff constantly, and I think about zanpakutou, but I am not a powers person. I hate making up powers. I made up an OC with a poetry zanpakutou. I am bad at this.

Most bankai aren’t even coherent. They’re either (a) shikai but more, (b) a weird agglomerate of high concept nonsense, or (c) a giant, flying skeletal snake that can shoot a cero, aka, the only valid bankai.

The main bankai headcanon I have is this actually: I don’t think everyone should have bankai. I think very few characters should have bankai.

I love this crap. This is the sort of world-building that resonates in my bones.

That being said, I don’t think having bankai makes you a better person. I think getting bankai is a sign of being single-mindedly at one with the driving force of your zanpakutou. Here are the kinds of messed-up people who achieve bankai:

Complete drama queens (Byakuya, Rose, Shinji, Aizen, Urahara, Kyouraku, Kurotsuchi)

People who are off-the-chain ride-or-die for their friends and/or principles; would throw their life away for not even one corn chip (Ichigo, Rukia, Renji, Hitsugaya, Ukitake)

Idiots with one brain cell who can’t hold two conflicting thoughts in their head at once anyway (Ikkaku, Isshin, Zaraki, possibly Renji again)

Lots of us take meandering paths in life. We don’t like the career paths we’ve chosen for ourselves. We get divorced. We try things and we don’t like them. That doesn’t mean we can’t do meaningful things or fall in love or have an interesting and fulfilling life. You can be a good and interesting character without getting bankai. I want more stories about the kind of people who never get bankai, actually.

Out of the characters you’ve listed, the one I actually would like to see get bankai is Momo. I think Momo has gone her entire life trying to be someone that other people wanted her to be, and I want to see her come out of the Aizen debacle determined to become the person she wants to be. Momo is every friend I have who has managed to escape the shitty partner who made them small and I want so many good things for her.

First and foremost, Tobiume appears to be a baby seven-branch sword, and I read once that Hinamori means something like “young tree”, so obviously, I want her to keep growing more prongs the stronger she gets, and I want it to reshape into a full 7-point rack when she goes to bankai. The guiding principles I would use in designing a bankai for Momo are (1) it needs to be distinct from Yamamoto’s and Isshin’s, and (2) it needs to be such that she can have epic throwdowns with Bankai Rukia, look fam, I know what I’m about. The answer is obvious: L A V A. Earth fissures, magma spray, encasing people in rock, and most importantly, I want Momo to selectively turn parts of her body into molten earth, this bitch is unstabbable, what are you gonna do now? I want her and Shinji to have a combo attack where she turns the ground into the set of Dante’s Inferno and then Shinji flips that shit upside-down. It will be called “The Ceiling is Lava” and Renji, Izuru and Shuuhei will be re-enacting this classic Supa Hot Fire reaction gif from the sidelines.

I don’t think Rangiku can ever get bankai because she’s missing part of her soul. I’m sorry. It sucks, but it just seems like a huge no-go to me. But, if I were a GinRan person, particularly the sort of GinRan person who likes to keep it as a Tragedy That Can Never Be, and if I were into writing 200k fanfics, I would definitely write an AU where he manages to leave her a piece of his soul that she can use to fix her own, except that it’s still like Gin’s soul, so it’s legit awful, and there would be, like, a whole bunch of inner world vision quest stuff and she would have to face the parts of herself that she doesn’t like and realize that she is strong enough to handle his power and take control over the ghost of him and it would be wild. In this case, her bankai would basically be recreating his bankai with her own-- forming the ashes of Haineko into bullets that can move at supersonic speed and explode into ash inside you. It would be super terrifying, she would be the second most powerful person in Bleach (after Orihime).

I do not want Izuru to get bankai. Sorry, I just don’t. The only way he could get bankai is to lean into the crushing despair of his soulvoid and to admit that he is defined by his depression. If I keep going, this is gonna get real personal, real quick, so I’ll keep it at this: there are ways in which mental illness can make you extremely successful professionally at the cost of your personhood and I am not going in that room right now. No bankai for Kira.

I don’t think Yumichika is destined for bankai either. He negs his zanpakutou. Ruri'iro Kujaku is never gonna give it up for him. Like Rangiku, he’s going to need a Narrative that would involve him taking agency over his life, possibly leaving Squad 11. Maybe Ikkaku dies? I don’t know, but it would have to be extreme, and… that’s not a journey I want for Yumichika. I like him the way he is, a weird, bloodthirsty chorus kid hanging around with the wrestling team and helping them get through Algebra I. That being said, Yumichika absolutely falls into the “drama queen” category, and I think we could never know what his bankai is, because if he used it on you, you would lose your mind instantly and never be able to describe it. His shikai is already high enough concept to be a bankai. He would make Rose’s and Kyouraku’s bankais look like community theater productions of Into the Woods. Glittering peacocks would come down from the sky. Elton John and Beyonce would be involved. It would be Cats (2019) only you would be inside it.

Also, I love Shuuhei, but everything I have heard about Can’t Fear Your Own World just makes me angry (except the Shino parts, give me all the Madarame family feels please and thank you), so I am taking Matsumoto road and denying that he has one, no matter how much evidence I am given to the contrary.
