The president of France on Thursday stepped into the cold mountain prison where Toussaint Louverture, a famed leader of the Haitian Revolution, died 220 years ago after being tricked, kidnapped and secreted across an ocean and into the French hinterland. Standing in the armory, not far from the cell where Louverture spent his last days, President Emmanuel Macron called the man who took on France after being freed from slavery a hero who embodied the true values of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution.[...]
He glossed over the racism and colonial oppression that led to Louverture’s imprisonment and said nothing about the lingering effects of the country’s slaving past. In particular, he did not mention the ransom that France extorted from Haiti to compensate former slave owners and that hobbled Haiti’s economic development for more than a century. [...]
Louverture grew up enslaved in what was then France’s most prized and brutal colony, Saint-Domingue, later Haiti. He went on to become one of the leaders of the slave rebellion that prompted the revolutionary government in France to declare an end to slavery across all the colonies in 1794, at the height of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. But then Napoleon came to power, sent warships to crush the former colony — unsuccessfully — and reimposed slavery in the French empire. Louverture was seized, and imprisoned without trial.
It wasn’t for another 46 years that France, on April 27, 1848, abolished slavery for a second and final time.
By honoring Louverture, a figure of the first abolition, on the anniversary of the second one, Mr. Macron engaged in an act of historical incongruity that blurred the message, said Myriam Cottias, director of the International Research Center on Slavery and Post-Slavery in Paris.
The first abolition was brought about by a bloody slave uprising, while the second reflected the ideals of the French Republic, notably equality. Plus, Ms Cottias noted, Louverture was betrayed by Napoleon, an autocrat who crowned himself emperor. “To celebrate the Republic in the place where we killed a small flame, a man of the Enlightenment, and where the person who made that man die was also the one who killed the Republic — that ambiguity, I find extremely harmful,” she said.[...]
much of his history remains forgotten in France, said Jean-Marc Ayrault, a former French prime minister and the head of France’s Foundation for the Remembrance of Slavery. A report published by the foundation in 2020 said that only one in 10 French primary and secondary school students learn about Louverture and the Haitian Revolution.[...]
Ms. Cottias said that France’s fervent belief in the republican ideal of equality [sic] is part of the reason the topic remains so sensitive. “It’s hard for people to understand that the history of slavery and colonial history is part of France’s history, and not a history on the side,” she said. “It’s the sticking point.” France’s legacy in Haiti did not end with its declaration of independence in 1804. In 1825, French warships returned and forced the young country to pay compensation for the colonial losses, or face war. Haiti became the world’s first and only country in which the descendants of enslaved people paid reparations to the descendants of their masters, for generations. That debt, and the loans the country took out to pay for it, crippled the country’s economy for more than a century.
A New York Times investigation revealed that over six decades, Haiti sent $560 million in today’s dollars to descendants of former colonists and the banks that offered the first loan. Had that money stayed in the country, it would have grown the economy from $21 billion to $115 billion over two centuries. And that does not include later loans taken out.
Several prominent scholars, activists and politicians in both France and Haiti have long called on France to return the money. Mr. Ayrault, the former prime minister, said his foundation would lobby for a commission to shed light on the history of these payments. But Mr. Macron did not mention the debt in his speech, emphasizing instead the symbolic power of the tribute. “The simple fact of pronouncing this name, Toussaint Louverture, is therefore a reparation for the affront made to a great Frenchman,” he said. Mr. Macron barely referred to contemporary Haiti, which is plagued by gang violence.[...]
Leslie Voltaire, a former Haitian official, welcomed the tribute but said France owed Haiti more than words. “The legacy of Haiti is a legacy of trying to reimpose slavery, and forcing a neocolonial regime by debt,” Mr. Voltaire, who campaigned for financial compensation from France as a government minister 20 years ago, said from Port-au-Prince. Mr. Voltaire pointed out that a former French president, François Hollande, promised to repay that debt in 2015. “I would have liked to hear a follow-up to that,” he said.

what are ur bobs burgers location theories...... i know it takes place in new jesery w/ some architectural inspo from san francisco but I don't know much about nj seeing as im not even american lol
Omg omg! I have so many thoughts about this.
So, for background, I’m from New Jersey. As a result, over the years, I’ve collected some theories as to towns that inspired Seymour’s Bay.
Asbury Park- yeah, like that one Springsteen album. It’s a very touristy area in the summer. There’s a boardwalk and a beach, as well as the famous Wonder Bar. I’m convinced that the Wonder Wharf is named after the Wonder Bar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keyport- this is a small town by the bay where you can see Manhattan straight across. I know Sam Francisco architecture was an inspiration for the buildings, but main street here looks too much like Ocean Avenue to be a coincidence, at least, to me.
Tumblr media
Red Bank- I love this town. It’s so funky and artsy. It’s not quite a beach town, but it is by a river! The architecture is also a little funky, which I think matches the vibe of the town. It’s very charming with a Seymour’s Bay type of uniqueness to it. I also think Lily is buried here, because Redburn sounds like Red Bank.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Long Branch- this one is a more affluent area, but it’s one of my favorite beach towns. There’s a boardwalk, some beautiful waterfront restaurants, and funky little shops.
Tumblr media
Atlantic City- do I even need to explain this one? AC is home to not only the longest boardwalk in the state, but in America. It’s probably the most famous spot in all of New Jersey. While I’ve personally never been, the boardwalk is iconic and I wouldn’t be surprised if it served as inspiration for Wonder Wharf.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Keansburg- okay this one is more based off of one single personal experience. Over the summer, I was at the Keansburg boardwalk with my family getting hot dogs. We leave the hot dog place and I see a guy go by in a golf cart. Naturally, I turn to my mom and go “Mr. Fischoeder?” I mean, the guy was in a jersey beach town, at the boardwalk, on a golf cart! I genuinely started to question if I live in the show that day. And then we were walking along the boardwalk and I start to notice that the set up is a little too familiar. It looked like Wonder Wharf, especially in the movie. I can’t really find photos of the amusement park setup, but you have got to trust me.
Tumblr media
Some other thoughts that I have:
I think the location is around the Long Branch area. I remember in Sauce Side Story, when the kids go to Bottom Hook, my mom and I scrambled to find the maps app. There’s this town, Sandy Hook, that we think is supposed to be Bottom Hook, and Louise was saying how far it was from their town. We looked to see what town would be the same distance from Sandy Hook, and it fell on Long Branch.
I think Linda’s hometown of Hunkataway is named in honor of Piscataway or Rahway. We have a lot of Lenape area names around here, and that’s probably in reference to that. I wouldn’t be surprised if her accent was from Jersey City, though.
I believe the Wharf Arts Center is based off of the PNC Arts Center, an amphitheater that’s also the only place big names come to perform in the area in places than aren’t Newark, NYC, or Philly.
I’ve noticed that the Belchers, or at least Bob, fold their pizza, which is such a New Jersey thing. I felt so seen there.
Kings Head Island has got to be Long Island. The spot that’s just a ferry ride away and where all the rich people live?? That’s literally just Long Island, New York.
Remember last year when that one guy dumped literally hundreds of pounds of pasta in the woods and people were saying it was Jimmy Pesto? That happened in my hometown. Granted, it was on the other side of town from me, but yeah. Jimmy Pesto dumped pasta in my hometown ig
When Tina asked Tammy for Becky’s phone number in V for Valentine-detta, she said it started with 201. That’s a New Jersey area code and, according to my mom, used to be more widespread through the state, instead of a small bit in North Jersey like it is now.
I know the name Seymour’s Bay came from a joke with the crew, but omg what if it’s also in reference to Raritan Bay?
Not a theory, but my mom is so Linda coded and I’m very Tina. Like we’re actually them. I think I made a post once about how much my mom is like Linda.
That thing in local she-ro with the local celebrity was so real bc celebrities can be cryptid there sometimes. Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi will just show up to the local ice cream shop sometimes
In conclusion, I really love bob’s burgers and how New Jersey it is. And I will talk anyone’s ear off about it, like I just did. Thank you for indulging me 🫶

Madam Scully’s Spiritual Services, Inc. (3/?)
Something about the dead had always intrigued Dana Scully. They had stories to tell, assuredly, but communing with them from the great beyond was not exactly how Dana had imagined having a conversation with those that had passed. The idea of forensic pathology had taken a hold of her in the last six months. The idea that the dead could speak to her – that the evidence they carried around could help solve the mysteries of their endings – be they naturally occurring or not – planted a seed that she could not root out.
Missy knew of her plans to attend medical school, but Dana had not told her what she planned to do with the advanced degree once she had it. Her parents had been brutally murdered, and she was sure that Missy would see the choice to become a forensic pathologist or medical examiner as some kind of bid to solve the mystery of their deaths – a way to hold onto the trauma of their passing. And, she had to admit, maybe there was something to that. Melissa had wanted Dana to let go. And while Dana had moved on, she had not exactly put the past behind her.
She shoved a loose shank of hair away from her face, tucking it securely behind her ear and sighed. She’d been up all night thinking of the man who had come into the shop – Fox Mulder. Despite Melissa’s adamant insistence that the voice Dana had heard had been from beyond the pale of life, she wasn’t entirely convinced. There might be a more rational explanation. And by the time dawn broke, she had decided that she had to at least talk to Fox Mulder about it. He was, after all, the only other person in the room.
She had searched for him, and all her searching had so far been fruitless. She’d checked the white pages, the yellow pages, university directories (she wasn’t sure why, but she’d pegged him as some kind of academic). She’d even tried calling C&P Telephone Company and its new parent company, Bell Atlantic, asking how she might track down a number. All had proven useless, and the later two, snottily unhelpful.
She slid the MCAT study guide back in front of her. There would be other investigative avenues, she just needed to think of them first. In the meantime she would put her head down and study. But the words swirled around the page in front of her, and she couldn’t focus.
Huffing another irritated sigh, she stood from behind the front counter and made her way into the curtained room where they did their various readings. Missy was in the small side office in the back of the building going over their books, and so Dana thought she might take a moment to see if she could maybe hear the voice again. Maybe it was an echo from the restaurant next door, maybe it was…
Once the curtain closed behind her, the room took on a cloistered, insulated feel, the ambient sounds of everyday life muted and dulled. She sat down in the chair reserved for she and Melissa and lit the three candles that sat in the center of the room, closing her eyes.
It wasn’t like she’d never tried this. After her parents had died, in those miserable weeks where she and Missy had had to roll calls with the police, the church, the funeral parlor, relatives, the social security administration, the bank; after they’d had to handle all the various necessary bureaucracies that come with the end of a modern life, Dana had walked into this room in emotional disarray with the thought that she could speak with her parents. That she could maybe say all of the things that were left unsaid between them. That she could listen to them in kind. Her sister ran a business that claimed people could speak with their departed relatives. Her sister believed, actually believed that it was possible. That it was likely. That she herself could hear voices from beyond the grave. Why not try to talk to them in this place that was readily at her disposal? But the room had remained silent. No voices ever spoke to her. Not her parents, nor anyone else. She tried tarot. She tried Ouija. She’d actually tried a goddamn seance. But none of it had borne any fruit. One night, Melissa had come into the room while Dana sat in it, put her arms firmly around her sister and said: “They’re not here, honey.”
The room before her stayed as quiet as it had all those many months ago. If anyone was here to talk, they weren’t saying anything. Finally, after probably fifteen solid minutes of silence, the candles in front of her guttered again and she looked up. Melissa stood holding the curtain open that led to the back rooms and gave her a sympathetic look.
“Any luck?” she asked.
Dana gave an embarrassed chuckle. “No.”
“I think it’s good that you’re trying,” Missy said, moving into the room and running a hand along Dana’s shoulders before lowering herself into the chair across from her. The same chair that Mulder had sat in the night before.
“I think it’s ridiculous that I’m trying.”
“Believe what you will,” Melissa said. “I don’t think the spirits care one way or the other.” The crystal on the choker she wore flashed dully in the candlelight.
Dana sighed, rubbed her face.
“Maybe the spirit is tied to him,” Missy went on, tilting her head to look at Dana kindly. “Maybe he’ll come back.”
“Maybe he will,” Dana said, not really believing it. “And what if he does?”
Missy cocked her head to the side in question.
“Let’s say he comes back. Let’s say the spirit,” Dana gave the word a dismissive, condescending inflection, “comes with him. What then?”
Melissa shrugged. “I don’t know. Something brought him here last night. Maybe it’s on us to find out what it is.”
The irritating thing was, Dana was pretty sure Melissa was right. Otherwise she wouldn’t have spent the last three hours fruitlessly trying to track him down.
Missy leaned out over the table and grabbed Dana’s hand, squeezing it in sympathy. “The answers are there, Dana. You just have to know where to look.”
XxXxXxXxXxX
Two weeks later
The night was warm, but not uncomfortably so, the heat wave of the last several weeks having finally dissipated, leaving the residents of Washington DC a little sun scorched, but relieved.
Dana had left the front door to the shop propped open with half a cinder block, the soft sussurus of the cars going by drifting into the doorway along with the smells of carnitas and hot tar, and the flowery scent of the detergent that the cleaners next door used to launder shirts. It was a hazy, dream-like evening, the best kind of summer night, and it took every bit of will power she possessed not to shove aside her studies and go outside to enjoy it.
Missy was in the back with a regular client and the night had been otherwise slow, and Dana watched the sky turn from the easy blue of dusk into the warm pinks and oranges of sunset, the neon signs in their windows humming in contentment.
The sweep of a car’s headlights briefly flashed across the desk and she reached for the green-ish glass bottle of Coke next to her and took a sip through a red and white striped straw. Was there anything better on a warm summer’s night? She thought not.
She was just getting back into gear and focusing on the words in the textbook in front of her, when she felt the heavy presence of someone else in the room with her. Looking up and half expecting to see the hazy outline of a ghost, she was instead met with an even more surprising sight: a full flesh and blood mortal, none other than Fox Mulder.
“Oh!” she said, surprised, raising a hand to press against her chest.
“Sorry,” he immediately apologized. “I didn’t mean to scare you. Your door was open.”
“Yes,” she said, getting her breath back and trying to regulate her heart rate. “It’s um, it’s a really nice night.”
“It is,” he said, rising up on his toes and then lowering himself back down. She half expected him to snap his fingers and swing his arms in front of himself for a clap.
“Can I help you?” she finally spoke when it appeared that he probably wouldn’t.
He shook himself. “Yes,” he said, reaching back into his pocket to pull out his wallet. “It occurred to me a few days ago that I left here without paying, and that’s not exactly a good look for someone in law enforcement.”
“You’re a cop?” Dana said, genuinely surprised.
“A federal agent,” he clarified. “I’m just finishing up my training at Quantico.”
So he was young, Dana thought, probably right out of college. Only a year or two older than her.
“Well copper,” she said, “you do owe me ten bucks.”
Mulder smiled and reached into his wallet, pulling out a twenty dollar bill and handing it over. Dana opened the till and started to make change when Mulder held out a hand. “Keep the change, please,” he said. “It’s the least I can do for running out on you.”
“Okay,” Dana said, sliding the ten she was about to hand him into her pocket. “Thank you.”
Mulder made no move to leave. “I’m… sorry about that, by the way,” he finally said. “I don’t mean to offend, but the whole thing at the end was kind of… weird.”
“No offense taken,” Dana said, sitting up straight. “It was weird, what happened at the end.”
“You mean most customers don’t bolt out the door without paying?”
“As a general rule, no,” she said. “But what I meant was, the thing about the scarf,” he moved on his feet, uncomfortable. “That’s not something that usually happens. I’m sorry if it scared you.”
“It didn’t exactly scare me,” he tried to explain, “but it did… I guess what I want to know is… What exactly did… happen?”
Dana rubbed a tired hand over her eyes and glanced back at the curtained room. With Mulder standing in front of her once again, she was beginning to get that creepy feeling up her neck, and the thought of the reading room kind of wigged her out. “Do you want to go outside and talk?” she asked him, swallowing thickly. “There’s a couple of picnic tables around the back we could sit at.”
“Yeah,” Mulder said, darting his own eyes toward the back room. “That would be nice.” He looked as relieved as she felt.
He stepped out and onto the sidewalk in front of the shop and then stood back to let her lead the way. On her way past the taqueria, she paused for a moment, inspired.
“One second,” she said, holding up a finger, and then darted into the taqueria, emerging less than a minute later holding two frozen paletas. “Okay,” she said, looking at him as she came out the door. “This way.”
He followed her obediently as she turned onto the small sparse grass space next to the parking lot, the ground below their feet mealy with crushed asphalt and broken glass. She hiked her way up to sit on the table part of the picnic table, letting her feet rest on the bench. From where she sat, she could still keep an eye on Madam Scully’s door should a customer show up.
Mulder lowered himself down beside her, mirroring her position. She handed him one of the paletas. “Mango,” she said, peeling open the wrapping to grab the popsicle’s wooden stick.
Mulder raised his eyebrows, but accepted the treat politely, opening the frozen confection and taking an experimental bite. “S’good,” he said. “How’d you know what I’d like?”
“One of the perks of the job,” she said, smiling and sinking her own teeth into the tart delicacy.
He smiled at that and took another bite and they eased into a comfortable silence. The paleta started to melt under her ministrations and a drop of mango juice started running down her wrist. She licked it off, and when she looked up she found Mulder watching her, something sharp behind his eyes.
“So Quantico, huh?” she asked to distract them both.
Mulder looked back down at his own popsicle and took another bite. “Yep,” he said with his mouth full. “I’m going to be a real life FBI agent, ma.”
Scully considered this. “Maybe that’s why it was so hard to track you down.”
Mulder sat up upon hearing this. “You tried to track me down?”
Embarrassed, Scully tucked back into her dessert. “You owed me money, see,” she said nonchalantly.
“Ah,” he said, tipping his head back. “I was wondering if it was…” he trailed off, and Scully found herself desperate to find out what he’d been about to say.
Mulder took the last bite and placed the wooden stick into the wrapping, and threw it in a perfect arc so that it landed squarely in a trash receptacle a few yards away.
“Nothing but net,” Scully said, impressed.
Mulder smiled at her and looked away.
“So I think you might be holding out on me,” he finally said.
She tilted her head in question.
“I think you might be Madam Scully, after all. There’s no other explanation for the thing you said the other day.”
Dana tilted her head down, looked away. “I may be Scully, but I’m certainly no madam,” she said quietly.
“So how did you know about the scarf, Scully ?” he said, emphasizing her name in a playful way. She thought of him as Mulder. It kind of worked.
“I don’t know anything about the scarf,” she said. “What happened in there…” How could she describe it to him? “That’s never happened to me before.”
“So what did happen?” he asked, quite seriously.
“After our reading,” she started, “I heard something.”
“Something?”
“A voice,” she admitted. “Telling me to ask you about the red scarf.”
He stared at her in wonder. “What kind of voice?”
Dana hadn’t really thought about it until he asked. “A girl’s voice. A little girl.”
“So you’re the real thing, huh?” He finally said, more in wonder than anything else. “I never would have… I pulled in for tacos .”
She huffed a rueful laugh. “Then can you explain it to me?”
“You need me to explain it to you?” he asked incredulously. “You’re the fortune teller,” he went on. “And you heard the voice of my dead sister. I was hoping you could explain it to me .”

It’s been a year since Russia invaded Ukraine, and the battle continues.
Military and civilian deaths and injuries on both sides have been estimated in the hundreds of thousands, and millions more Ukrainians have been displaced.
What set the stage for today’s conflict? Here’s a look back at the long, intertwined history of the contentious neighbors.
The two countries’ shared heritage goes back more than a thousand years to a time when Kyiv, now Ukraine’s capital, was at the center of the first Slavic state, Kyivan Rus, the birthplace of both Ukraine and Russia.
In A.D. 988, Volodymyr the Great, the pagan prince of Novgorod and grand prince of Kyiv, accepted the Orthodox Christian faith and was baptized in the Crimean city of Chersonesus.
From that moment on, Russian leader Vladimir Putin recently declared, “Russians and Ukrainians are one people, a single whole.”
Yet, over the past ten centuries, Ukraine has repeatedly been carved up by competing powers.
Mongol warriors from the east conquered Kyivan Rus in the 13th century.
Tumblr media
In the 16th century, Polish and Lithuanian armies invaded from the west.
In the 17th century, war between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Tsardom of Russia brought lands to the east of the Dnieper River under Russian imperial control.
The east became known as "Left Bank" Ukraine; lands to the west of the Dnieper, or "Right Bank," were ruled by Poland.
More than a century later, in 1793, right bank (western) Ukraine was annexed by the Russian Empire.
Over the years that followed, a policy known as Russification banned the use and study of the Ukrainian language, and people were pressured to convert to the Russian Orthodox faith.
Ukraine suffered some of its greatest traumas during the 20th century.
After the communist revolution of 1917, Ukraine was one of the many countries to fight a brutal civil war before being fully absorbed into the Soviet Union in 1922.
In the early 1930s, to force peasants to join collective farms, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin orchestrated a famine that resulted in the starvation and death of millions of Ukrainians.
Afterward, Stalin imported large numbers of Russians and other Soviet citizensmany with no ability to speak Ukrainian and with few ties to the region—to help repopulate the east.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These legacies of history created lasting fault lines. Because Eastern Ukraine came under Russian rule much earlier than western Ukraine, people in the east have stronger ties to Russia and have been more likely to support Russian-leaning leaders.
Western Ukraine, by contrast, spent centuries under the shifting control of European powers such as Poland and the Austro-Hungarian Empire — one reason Ukrainians in the west have tended to support more Western-leaning politicians.
The eastern population tends to be more Russian-speaking and Orthodox, while parts of the west are more Ukrainian-speaking and Catholic.
With the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine became an independent nation. But uniting the country proved a difficult task.
For one, “the sense of Ukrainian nationalism is not as deep in the east as it is in west,” says former ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer.
The transition to democracy and capitalism was painful and chaotic. Many Ukrainians, especially in the east, longed for the relative stability of earlier eras.
Tumblr media
"The biggest divide after all these factors is between those who view the Russian imperial and Soviet rule more sympathetically versus those who see them as a tragedy," says Adrian Karatnycky, a Ukraine expert and former fellow at the Atlantic Council of the United States.
These fissures were laid bare during the 2004 Orange Revolution in which thousands of Ukrainians marched to support greater integration with Europe.
On ecological maps, you can even see the divide between the southern and eastern parts of Ukraine—known as the steppes—with their fertile farming soil and the northern and western regions, which are more forested, says Serhii Plokhii, a history professor at Harvard and director of its Ukrainian Research Institute.
He says a map depicting the demarcations between the steppe and the forest, a diagonal line between east and west, bears a "striking resemblance" to political maps of Ukrainian presidential elections in 2004 and 2010.
Crimea was occupied and annexed by Russia in 2014, followed shortly after by a separatist uprising in the eastern Ukrainian region of Donbas that resulted in the declaration of the Russian-backed People’s Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk.
Today, the two countries find themselves in conflict yet again, fault lines that reflect the region's tumultuous history.

LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
November 27, 2023
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
NOV 28, 2023
Today Hamas released 11 more hostages into Israel; in exchange, Israel released 33 Palestinians from prison. Both sides have agreed to extend the truce for two days and to continue the exchanges. Hamas has committed to releasing an additional 20 women and children, and if the past pattern holds, Israeli releases will be three times that number.
The four-day pause in fighting has permitted aid to Gaza to increase. Since the 21st of October, when the first aid trucks began to cross into Gaza, more than 2,000 trucks of aid and assistance have gone in.
Once the deal was secure, President Joe Biden issued a statement: “I have remained deeply engaged over the last few days to ensure that this deal—brokered and sustained through extensive U.S. mediation and diplomacy—can continue to deliver results.” He noted that more than 50 hostages have been released and that the U.S. “has led the humanitarian response into Gaza—building on years of work as the largest funder of humanitarian assistance for the Palestinian people.”
In his third trip to the region since the October 7 attack, Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to Israel and the West Bank later this week. He is currently in Brussels for a meeting of foreign ministers in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and will go to the Middle East from there. The State Department says that, among other things, Blinken will “discuss the principles he outlined in Tokyo on November 8, tangible steps to further the creation of a future Palestinian state, and the need to prevent the conflict from widening.”
In that November 8 address, Blinken outlined the U.S. administration’s policy for the future of Gaza. “[K]ey elements,” he said, are “no forcible displacement of Palestinians from Gaza—not now, not after the war. No use of Gaza as a platform for terrorism or other violent attacks. No reoccupation of Gaza after the conflict ends. No attempt to blockade or besiege Gaza. No reduction in the territory of Gaza. We must also ensure no terrorist threats can emanate from the West Bank.”
Blinken said that “the Palestinian people’s voices and aspirations” must be “at the center of post-crisis governance in Gaza” and that “Palestinian-led governance and Gaza unified with the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority” are U.S. requirements.
Gaza will need a “sustained mechanism for reconstruction,” Blinken said on November 8, “and a pathway to Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in states of their own, with equal measures of security, freedom, opportunity, and dignity.”
At home, the administration today announced nearly 30 new actions to strengthen the country’s supply chains, both because smoother supply chains should reduce consumer prices and because stronger supply chains should ensure that the U.S. doesn’t fall short of critical supplies, such as medicines.
On February 24, 2021, about a month after he took office, Biden established a task force across more than a dozen departments and agencies to figure out where supply chains were vulnerable. After research and analysis, as well as input from industry leaders, experts, and the public, the task force issued a 250-page report in June 2021.
Their recommendations, along with investments in key industries such as semiconductors and in infrastructure, helped to untangle the supply chains that remained snarled through 2021 (remember the 100 cargo ships waiting to dock in fall 2021? Now, two years later, there are fewer than 10). From October 2021 to October 2023, supply chain pressure, which is tracked by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, fell from near-record highs to a record low. That, in turn, has helped to lower inflation.
Now Biden has established a new White House Council on Supply Chain Resilience to make sure those supply chains stay strong. He will also use the Defense Production Act—a law from 1950 that requires companies to make a certain product deemed necessary to national defense in exchange for guarantees that the product will have a buyer—to make more essential medicines in the United States and to increase production of new clean energy technologies. The U.S. Department of Agriculture, one of the many government entities involved in supply chains, will invest $196 million to strengthen domestic food supply chains.
The country is also working with other countries on this issue: two weeks ago, Biden signed a  supply chain agreement with 13 countries in the Indo-Pacific that he said will enable the countries to identify supply chain bottlenecks “before they become the kind of full-scale disruptions we saw during the pandemic.”
Clearly staking out positions for the upcoming election, Biden in his explanation of his new supply chain policy warned that MAGA Republicans want to cut the recent investments in roads, bridges, the Internet, and so on, that have created so many new jobs in infrastructure and manufacturing. (Those measures are popular: House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) joined members of the Florida congressional delegation today to view an expansion project at the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law although Johnson voted against it.)
“[T]hey want to go back to the ‘bad old days,’” Biden said, “when corporations looked around the world to find the cheapest labor they could find, to send the jobs overseas, and then import the products back to the United States. Now we’re building the products here and exporting products overseas.”
In contrast to the governance Democrats have been delivering, the Republicans appear to be doubling down on their grievances. Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH), who chairs the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of Government, announced today the committee will hold another hearing on Thursday concerning “the federal government’s involvement in social media censorship, as well as the recent attacks on independent journalism and free expression.”
The idea that the federal government is silencing right-wing speech is an article of faith among MAGA Republicans, although their committee’s last hearing, eight months ago, turned up nothing. Thursday’s hearing will feature three witnesses, two of whom also testified in the last hearing.
MAGA Republicans might be keen to create distraction after Colorado District Judge Sarah B. Wallace found that Trump “engaged in an insurrection on January 6, 2021.” Wallace found that “Trump acted with the specific intent to incite political violence and direct it at the Capitol with the purpose of disrupting the electoral certification.” She did not disqualify him from the ballot, but the decision will continue to move up through the court system.
Meanwhile, former president Trump appears to be getting nervous that former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley is gaining momentum. On Saturday he showed up at the University of South Carolina–Clemson football game, South Carolina’s main football rivalry. As Isaac Bailey of The State wrote, that Trump felt he had to try to upstage Haley suggests not strength, but weakness. Indeed, while there were cheers for him, there were also boos.
Yesterday, on Face the Nation, Representative Ken Buck (R-CO), who is not running for reelection, went after Trump. “Everybody who thinks that the election was stolen or talks about the election being stolen is lying to America,” Buck said. “Everyone who makes the argument that January 6 was, you know, an unguided tour of the Capitol is lying to America. Everyone who says that the prisoners who are being prosecuted right now for their involvement in January 6, that they are somehow political prisoners or that they didn’t commit crimes, those folks are lying to America.”
As pressure on him increases, Trump is playing hard to his base, promising on Saturday, for example, that he was “seriously looking at alternatives” to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), more popularly known as Obamacare. He suggested the law should be overturned.
Democratic National Committee chair Jamie Harrison noted on social media that more than 40 million Americans depend on the ACA for their health insurance and that the law also protects as many as 135 million Americans with preexisting conditions from losing their health insurance.

The Group of Seven (G-7) leaders are expected to ratchet up economic and political pressure on Russia when they convene at a summit in Italy later this week, with plans to roll out new loans to Ukraine from frozen Russian assets. They also plan to condemn Moscow’s growing ties to North Korea as well as China’s indirect support of the Russian war machine.
The plans for the upcoming summit, described by current and former officials familiar with draft G-7 communiques circulating among diplomats, are being pushed by embattled Western leaders eager to lock in foreign-policy wins in the face of major election hurdles at home. A G-7 leaders’ summit in 2025 could be drastically different and a lot more fractured depending on how elections go in the United States, United Kingdom, and now France—particularly if former U.S. President Donald Trump beats incumbent President Joe Biden in the U.S. elections in November.
“This is the last time this group will meet in this configuration with these leaders. I think that’s pretty clear,” said Josh Lipsky, a former advisor at the International Monetary Fund and now senior director at the Atlantic Council’s GeoEconomics Center. “It all conveys a sense of urgency and the stakes around this G-7.”
The G-7 summit also comes against the backdrop of Israel’s war against Hamas in Gaza as well as strategic competition between the West and its rivals in Russia and China to curry favor and influence in the so-called global south. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has invited the leaders of at least a dozen non-G-7 countries to the upcoming summit, including Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, India, Kenya, Mauritania, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates.
The Biden administration’s top priority for the upcoming summit, which Biden himself is set to attend, is finalizing an agreement to provide around $50 billion in new loans to Ukraine using profits from Russian assets that have been frozen in the Western-dominated international financial system. The proposal has received widespread support in theory among countries opposed to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but it still faces a thicket of complex legal and financial hurdles.
Western countries froze around $280 billion in Russian financial assets following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the bulk of which is parked in Belgium, France, and Germany. EU officials have resisted efforts to seize the assets directly, fearing the precedent such a move would set for international markets, but they opened the door to allocating interest generated by these assets to Ukraine. The Biden administration’s plan calls for G-7 countries to issue Ukraine a $50 billion loan, seen as a critical lifeline for the country’s battered wartime economy, which would be paid back over the years by the interest from the frozen Russian assets. Those assets could generate around $2.7 billion to $3.7 billion a year in interest. Biden administration officials are still working to hash out the final details of the plan ahead of the summit.
Alongside this, the G-7 countries—the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom—are also expected to issue new statements condemning Russia’s deepening military ties with North Korea and send new warnings to Chinese banks to stop helping Moscow evade Western sanctions lest they face new sanctions themselves, the current and former officials said. The United States has so far avoided sanctioning major Chinese financial institutions, possibly fearing the impact on global financial markets, but Washington could choose to target smaller Chinese banks helping Russia skirt Western sanctions as a calculated response and opening warning shot.
“Our concern is that China is increasingly the factory of the Russian war machine,” Daleep Singh, the White House deputy national security advisor for international economics, said during an event at the Center for a New American Security. “You can call it the ‘arsenal of autocracy’ when you consider [that] Russia’s military ambitions threaten obviously the existence of Ukraine, but [also] increasingly European security, NATO, and trans-Atlantic security.”
The Biden administration’s push for major deliverables at the upcoming G-7 summit fits into a wider strategy the administration has taken to advance its foreign-policy agenda in more informal and ad hoc groupings of partners and allies as traditional multilateral institutions—such as the United Nations—are stuck in diplomatic gridlock. The administration has advanced its Indo-Pacific strategy through the Quad—a new partnership among Australia, India, Japan, and the United States—and security partnerships through the AUKUS arrangement with Australia and the United Kingdom.
While the Biden administration hopes to focus the G-7 summit on rallying more international support for Ukraine, it is also grappling with the ongoing crisis in the Middle East centered on Israel’s war against Hamas. Ongoing U.S. support for Israel in the war as the civilian death toll in Gaza mounts has opened Washington up to widespread criticism and accusations of hypocrisy, particularly from countries in the global south.
Countries including Colombia, Mexico, and Nicaragua have filed to join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice over vehement opposition from Israel and the United States. Colombia, Bolivia, and Belize have severed diplomatic ties with Israel, and Brazil has withdrawn its ambassador. Russian state propaganda outlets have seized on the narrative of Western double standards about civilian casualties in Ukraine versus Gaza, and many analysts assess that the conflict in Gaza is aiding the Kremlin’s messaging to the global south on Western hypocrisy.
“The Ukraine war awakened us in the West to the fact that there’s work to do in the global south, but at least then we were on the side of the global majority,” said Nathalie Tocci, director of the Istituto Affari Internazionali Italian think tank and former special advisor to the EU’s foreign-policy chief.
“Now with Israel-Gaza, we just basically are in a shrinking minority,” she added. “We’re in a far, far more complicated spot than we were a year ago vis-à-vis the global south … and there’s now this total lack of credibility that the West has to deal with.”

whats the bathroom situation like, both in housing and other buildings? are the housing bathrooms like a "typical" dorm bathroom?
There is very little about COA housing that is typical, including the bathrooms!
Our on-campus houses are all different from one another, but here are a few generalizations: the bathrooms are single-user, meaning if you're taking a shower or using the other facilities, you're in a room by yourself. This allows all of the bathrooms to be gender-neutral and safe, private spaces. The Kathryn W. Davis Village bathrooms have composting toilets where you "flush" with a handful of wood shavings, but most other houses have typical plumbing fixtures. Most houses on campus are family-size -- meaning you'll be living with just 4-8 folks, and typically around 4 people will share each bathroom.
What else can we tell you about bathrooms? All of our bathrooms on campus are now gender-neutral and where we have multi-stall bathrooms you can lock the outer door to transform the space for single users. The newest bathrooms in our Center for Human Ecology (CHE) are shared/all-gender bathrooms with locking individual toilet rooms and a long bank of sinks with spectacular views of Frenchman Bay. All of our newer construction also includes water-saving fixtures, and we're adding them to older buildings too.
Hopefully this helps, but let us know if you have more questions about all-things-bathroom (or anything else)!
And while we're talking bathrooms, we recommend checking out the inspiring work of College of the Atlantic alumnus Abe Noe-Hays '00, founder and executive director of the Rich Earth Institute, which focuses on transforming human urine into fertilizer. Very cool!

Not surprisingly, the 3 1/2-hour interview with John B. Wells referenced in this article has been scrubbed from the Internet, although I suspect that Wells still has the original. However, this was a blockbuster set of revelations that exhausted my knowledge at that point. Much more is known now. ⁃ Patrick Wood, TN Editor.
“The C.F.R. is the American branch of a society which originated in England. Internationalistic in viewpoint, the C.F.R., along with the Atlantic Union Movement, and the Atlantic Council of the U.S., believes national boundaries should be obliterated and one-world rule established … What the Trilaterals truly intend is the creation of a worldwide economic power superior to the political government of the nation-states involved. As managers and creators of the system they will rule the world … In my view, the Trilateral Commission represents a skillful, coordinated effort to seize control and consolidate the four centers of power: political, monetary, intellectual, and ecclesiastical.” (With No Apologies, [1979], the auto-biography by Senator Barry Goldwater, pp. 128, 284).
The New International Economic Order
Patrick Wood has been in the trenches fighting for America for many years. He was co-author with the late Antony C. Sutton of the two-volume classic, “Trilaterals Over Washington”. His original “August Review” has morphed into the August Forecast. He speaks at events, such as the upcoming Arizona Freedom Fest. Patrick’s latest book is “Technocracy Rising“. This video is three and a half hours in length. Below the video are some points of interest for readers who are reluctant to start into a film that long.  I hope that the text below will influence motivated readers to make time to enjoy seeing Patrick Wood and John B. Wells on the screen – they deliver a great show, with a great ending.
Super-revelations from Patrick Wood.
In late March, 2015, John B. Wells of Caravan To Midnight hosted for three and a half hours a man who is America’s foremost researcher on the Trilateral Commission. Many in the Liberty movement already know that Patrick Wood co-authored with Antony C. Sutton the now-famous “Trilaterals Over Washington” (in two volumes). Personally, I began to follow Patrick Wood about ten years ago when I discovered at his website a fascinating article he had written about the Bank for International Settlements. I began subscribing to his newsletter, and that is how I received notice that Patrick Wood was interviewed by John B. Wells. From his interview with John B. Wells I have taken down a few notes to share with readers here. Mr. Wood’s latest book, Technocracy Rising, is packed with facts and information, and its contents are the focus in this video interview. The interview gets started early by discussion of the Trilateral Commission’s employment of Technocracy’s principles and their “New International Economic Order”, with mention of the Trilateral Commission’s goal of “transforming government”. By about 24 minutes into the video we see that more than just government is being transformed. Wood lists seven of their primary targets as being:
Economics
Government
Religion
Law
Energy
Humanity
Christianity
“Who” is to do all this “transforming”?
 the Trilateral Commission;
 Technocracy;
 the United Nations; and
 Non-Government Organizations (NGOs).
We note that neither the American People nor the Congress of the United States of America are party to the transformation. Technocracy and Trilateralism and the United Nations and Non-governmental organizations are the four horses on which the New International Economic Order is riding into our lives. Keep that in mind as we go. Mr. Wood gives us things to notice, things being used by Technocracy to “transform” us:
Agenda 21
sustainable development
smart meters
climate change
cap and trade
the Green Economy
Human enhancement (Trans-Humanism: the merger of man and machine, literally)
As John B. Wells allows Mr. Wood to lay it all out in full, supporting knowledge is provided to the viewer to flesh-out the above listings, plus more. John B. and Patrick discuss “Scientism”, and Patrick Wood offers a passage by the “father of Technocracy”, Henri de Saint-Simon:
“A scientist, my dear friends, is a man who foresees; it is because science provides the means to predict that it is useful, and the scientists are superior to all other men.”

Democracy declined for 8th straight year around the globe, institute finds (AP) Last year had the worst decline in credible elections and parliamentary oversight in almost a half-century, driven by government intimidation, foreign interference, disinformation and the misuse of artificial intelligence in campaigns, an organization promoting democracy said Tuesday. The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, or International IDEA, said election credibility is threatened by turnout dropping and results are increasingly being contested. One in three elections are being disputed in some way, it said. The organization with 35 member governments said the average percentage of the voting age population who actually cast ballots has declined from 65.2% in 2008 to 55.5% in 2023.
Not-so-great expectations: Students are reading fewer books in English class (AP) Chris Stanislawski didn’t read much in his middle school English classes, but it never felt necessary. Students were given detailed chapter summaries for every novel they discussed, and teachers played audio of the books during class. Much of the reading material at Garden City Middle School in Long Island was either abridged books, or online texts and printouts, he said. In many English classrooms across America, assignments to read full-length novels are becoming less common. Some teachers focus instead on selected passages—a concession to perceptions of shorter attention spans, pressure to prepare for standardized tests and a sense that short-form content will prepare students for the modern, digital world. The National Council of Teachers of English acknowledged the shift in a 2022 statement on media education, saying: “The time has come to decenter book reading and essay-writing as the pinnacles of English language arts education.” The emphasis on shorter, digital texts does not sit well with everyone. Deep reading is essential to strengthen circuits in the brain tied to critical thinking skills, background knowledge—and, most of all, empathy, said Maryanne Wolf, a cognitive neuroscientist at UCLA specializing in dyslexia research.
Storm Lashes the Carolinas With Historic Amounts of Rain (NYT) A powerful storm system that was not quite a tropical storm dropped historic amounts of rainfall in southeastern North Carolina on Monday, forecasters said, leading to flooded businesses and collapsed roads in a region hit by Tropical Storm Debby just last month. Despite having tropical storm force winds above 39 miles per hour, the storm fell technically short of becoming what would have been the eighth named storm of this year’s Atlantic hurricane season, Helene. But even without the name, the hazards were the same. The storm unleashed flash flooding and wind gusts stronger than 60 m.p.h. along the North Carolina coast, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said on Monday afternoon. Debby brought more than a foot of rain across some parts of the Carolinas in August, and forecasters did not initially expect that much rain to fall on Monday. But by early afternoon, some locations in North Carolina had already seen nearly 15 inches of rain, catching residents, officials and forecasters by surprise.
Thousands of firefighters battle 'raging' wildfires across Portugal (BBC) More than 5,000 firefighters have been tackling wildfires that Portugal's Prime Minister has said are "raging across the country". Temperatures in Portugal exceeded 30C (86F) over the weekend and are expected to remain elevated for days. At least two people have died due to the fires, according to local media reports. Ten thousand hectares (37 sq miles) have already been burned between Porto and Aveiro in the north, the Portuguese news agency Lusa said. As of 23:00 BST, there were 128 active wildfires across the country.
Budapest and Poland’s Wroclaw reinforce their river banks ahead of more flooding in central Europe (AP) Soldiers dropped sandbags from military helicopters to reinforce river embankments and evacuated residents as the worst flooding in years spread Tuesday to a broad swath of Central Europe, taking lives and destroying homes. Heavy flooding has affected a large part of the region in recent days, including the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria. There have been at least 16 deaths reported in the flooding, which follow heavy rainfall across the region. Other places are now bracing for the flood waves to hit them, including two central European gems: Budapest, the Hungarian capital on the Danube River, and Wroclaw, a city in southwestern Poland on the Oder River, its old town filled with architectural gems. Hungary’s government of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán deployed soldiers to reinforce barriers along the Danube, and thousands of volunteers assisted in filling sandbags in dozens of riverside settlements.
Putin orders Russian army to expand by 180,000 soldiers to become 1.5 million-strong (Reuters) President Vladimir Putin on Monday ordered the regular size of the Russian army to increase by 180,000 troops to 1.5 million soldiers, the third time he has expanded its ranks since sending the military into Ukraine in February 2022. In a decree published on the Kremlin’s website, Putin ordered the overall size of the armed forces to be increased to 2.38 million people, of which he said 1.5 million should be active servicemen.
Despite Relentless Russian Attack, Life in Kharkiv Endures Underground (NYT) Despite constant bombings, residents of Kharkiv, Ukraine, have found opportunities for joy and emotional release. The rituals of ordinary life persist, including open-air graduation ceremonies for children. People find outlets for expression above ground and below. Dancers and skateboarders glide across public squares. But a new way of life has emerged underground, with operas staged in a garage and rock shows in basement bars. Life goes on, even as Russian bombardments produce devastating consequences. “It’s war, but no one is going to stop us from living,” one resident said.
Inside Japan’s biggest prison: home to yakuza … and hundreds of old men (Guardian) With its glass frontage and portico, Fuchū prison could be mistaken for a local government office. Inside, visitors enter an airy reception area where a banner declares support for the local football team, FC Tokyo. But stepping through a heavy, guarded door reveals that this is unmistakably a place of incarceration. Its walls house 1,700 inmates, including a large number serving sentences of less than 10 years but who, in the words of the prison literature, have “advanced criminal tendencies”. About a third of the men imprisoned at Fuchū, Japan’s biggest prison, have links to the yakuza—Japan’s crime syndicates. They are easy to spot, sporting elaborate, sprawling tattoos only partly concealed by regulation white vests. But it is hard to imagine many of them chasing their nemeses through the streets of Tokyo, roughing up business owners for protection money or going head-to-head with members of a rival gang. Like many of the inmates here, they have long since entered the twilight of their criminal careers. In Fuchū, 22% of inmates are 65 and over (like almost a third of the 125 million people in Japan), bringing with them needs that can give the prison the feel of a care home.
‘Lashed for a social media photo’ in Iran (BBC) Iran stepped up surveillance following nationwide women-led anti-establishment protests, after the death in police custody two years ago of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for allegedly not wearing her hijab properly. Like many of the women inspired by the protests, Alef posted a photo on social media revealing her hair flowing freely in public. It was a simple act of solidarity with the movement against the forced wearing of the hijab. But the picture was seen by the authorities, which were trying to crush the protests, and Alef was arrested. She says she was blindfolded, handcuffed and taken to an unknown location where she remained in solitary confinement for nearly two weeks. She was also interrogated multiple times. She was found guilty and although she was given a suspended sentence, she also received 50 lashes. Her story was similar to that of two other women and one man we spoke to in Iran. The UN’s Fact Finding Mission on Iran told the BBC “no-one should be jailed for a peaceful post online”.
A wave of exploding pagers in Lebanon and Syria (Foreign Policy) More than a dozen people were killed and around 2,800 others, including many Hezbollah members, were wounded across Lebanon and parts of Syria on Tuesday when the pagers they used to communicate exploded almost simultaneously. This was the “biggest security breach” that Hezbollah has faced since the Israel-Hamas war began nearly a year ago, a Hezbollah official told Reuters. Lebanese Health Minister Firass Abiad said some hospitals have already reached full capacity, with most victims reporting wounds to the face, hands, or stomach. Security forces have urged locals to stay off the roads to allow passage for ambulances, and Lebanon’s Public Health Ministry has placed hospitals on “maximum alert,” appealing for blood donations and calling on health care workers to head to their places of work immediately. Anyone with pagers was instructed to throw them away. Hezbollah and the Lebanese government blamed Israel for the detonations, and the militant group vowed retribution. Israel has declined to comment. Top Israeli security officials convened an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss options for addressing the escalating situation with Hezbollah. Hours earlier, Israel’s security cabinet announced that countering Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel and ensuring the safe return of its 60,000 residents were official war goals. The only way to do this is through “military action,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Monday. More than 100,000 people on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border have been displaced since near-daily tit-for-tat attacks began last October.
Rituals of Faith Became Another Casualty of War in Israel (NYT) Marking major holidays has been completely upended for three religions this year. For Palestinians in the West Bank, restrictions have limited access to holy sites. For Israel’s Jews, the war in Gaza has divided the population, and tensions only seem to be growing. Passover celebrations were accompanied by somber tallies of the days loved ones have been held captive. Palestinian Christian festivals, once crammed with pilgrims from around the world, are a shadow of their former selves. For Palestinian Muslims, the conflict in Gaza weighs heavily on even simple acts of remembrance.
The Calamitous Rape Crisis Unfolding in Congo’s War (WSJ) Women displaced by war in the Democratic Republic of Congo face an impossible choice: Starve or risk rape by soldiers as they collect firewood in the forest, The Journal reports. Psychologists working in camps say around 80 percent of women have been raped, some two or three times. “If the war ends, I won’t have to be raped anymore,” one woman said.

Chances rise to 50-50 for tropical development off Southeast coast as region prepares for heavy rainfall
As remnants of Hurricane Francine bring heavy rain to parts of the Deep South, the Carolina coast faces the potential for more downpours, with a coastal low possibly developing into a tropical system over the weekend or early next week.
Following Hurricane Francine, which is dissipating over the Tennessee Valley, the FOX Forecast Center is keeping an eye on an old frontal boundary off the Southeast coast. This area could become the season's next tropical disturbance. The National Hurricane Center has assigned a medium chance of development over the next week. Regardless of whether a tropical cyclone forms, the Carolinas can expect rainy and occasionally blustery conditions throughout the weekend and into the first half of the workweek.

"A front extending from the remnants of Hurricane Francine in the Midsouth through North Florida and into the Atlantic will serve as the catalyst for a low-pressure system to form offshore near the Georgia coast," explains FOX Weather Hurricane Expert Bryan Norcross. "Northeast and east winds will collide with tropical moisture from the south in the development zone, promoting atmospheric spin." While environmental conditions aren't ideal for rapid development, some gradual organization is possible as the disturbance moves north and west, approaching the coastline.

"If winds reach 40 mph within the circulation, as several computer models suggest, the system will be named Helene," said Bryan Norcross.
"Warm waters will fuel the system," added FOX Weather Meteorologist Kendall Smith. "We could easily see a tropical or subtropical depression by early next week. But don't get caught up in the terminology—the impacts will remain the same."
Forecast models predict widespread rainfall of 2-5 inches, with locally higher amounts possible, particularly east of Interstate 95. Coastal areas like Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, as well as Wilmington and Morehead City in North Carolina, are in the main impact zone.
NOAA's Weather Prediction Center has identified the Carolina coast as a potential flooding area on Monday, while more moderate rainfall is expected in inland cities like Raleigh, Charlotte, and Richmond, Virginia.
"Residents along the Carolina coast should prepare for an extended period of gusty winds and unpleasant weather, with conditions expected to peak on Monday," said Bryan Norcross. "At this time, there's no indication the system will develop into a hurricane, though we've seen similar situations intensify near the coast in the past."

Rough seas will bring the risk of rip currents and beach erosion The increased ocean activity will lead to rough surf, a heightened risk of rip currents, and the potential for additional coastal erosion. The coastline around the Outer Banks and southeastern Virginia is particularly vulnerable to rough seas, as demonstrated by swells from Hurricane Ernesto, which was over 1,000 miles away.
Waves generated by the former Category 2 hurricane caused flooding along North Carolina Highway 12, the primary route through the islands. At least one abandoned home fell into the ocean as a result.
Following this collapse, parts of Cape Hatteras National Seashore have been closed to swimmers due to concerns about debris in the water.
While authorities have not indicated that the surf will surpass the swells caused by Hurricane Ernesto or lead to further property damage, the local National Weather Service office in Morehead City, North Carolina, has issued various advisories for beachgoers and boaters, cautioning about the rough conditions.
