Australia Looks to Cement Dominance in Women's T20 World Cup
Australia are heavy favorites to win their seventh title at the women's T20 World Cup, which begins on Thursday and marks their first tournament entry since four-time tournament winner Meg Lanning quit. Alyssa Healy, the new captain, will face a test in the UAE, managing a team that has only won the 20-over trophy twice since the competition began in 2009. The 34-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman has been a part of Australia's previous six title victories, but she admits she is going into this year's event with "no real expectations".
"It's the best vs the best, and whoever can be the most consistent or win those small moments along the way will win," Healy wrote in a blog for the International Cricket Council's website.
Still, she stated that her team was loaded with fresh talent, identifying up-and-coming all-rounder Annabel Sutherland, 22, and batting sensation Phoebe Litchfield, 21, as players to watch.
Australia faces formidable rivals India and New Zealand. They arrive in the UAE after defeating New Zealand 3-0 in T20 cricket.
Since the 20-over competition's inception last year, India's hopes have been boosted by the Women's Premier League's resounding domestic success.
"When I talk about this team, we have a few individuals who have been playing for a long time and know their roles well," skipper Harmanpreet Kaur stated.
"This is the best team we are bringing for a T20 World Cup with."
India finished second in 2020 and fell in the semifinals in 2018 and 2023.
Sophie Devine of New Zealand will stand down as captain at the end of the competition, having competed in every World Cup and finished second twice.
"The T20 World Cup's become an important vehicle in the rise and growth of the women's game," Devine told the gathering.
Sri Lanka and Pakistan complete the first group, while Bangladesh, England, Scotland, South Africa, and the West Indies form the second.
'Breaking the barriers'
The South Africans, who fell to Australia in last year's final in Cape Town, have a new captain in Laura Wolvaardt, who is eager to improve on their performance.
"Reaching our first-ever World Cup final in 2023 was a significant milestone for us," she wrote on the ICC website.
Surprisingly, the Proteas beat England in the semi-finals.
"It was a significant 'breaking down limitations and breaking the bounds' event for the squad.
"Before that, we'd made the semi-finals on several occasions, so to go that one step further was very important for us as a group.
"Now our goal is to go that one step higher to lift the trophy."
Heather Knight's seasoned England team, which includes Nat Sciver-Brunt, Alice Capsey, Sophie Ecclestone, and Lauren Bell, will be out for retribution when they face the Proteas on October 7.
Bangladesh faces Scotland at Sharjah in the opening match of the tournament, where the prize money is for the first time equal to the men's edition with a $2.34 million The purse for the winners of the October 20 finals.
That's a 134% rise from the $1 million granted to the Australians when they won the title in South Africa last year.
The ICC stated that the change was aimed to "prioritize the women's game and accelerate its growth."
Bangladesh was slated to host the tournament but it was shifted to Dubai and Sharjah after weeks of political unrest in July and August ousted the government of autocratic ex-premier Sheikh Hasina.

Rishabh Pant Enjoys First Nets Session In Indian jersey After 16 Months, Gears Up For T20 WC
Star Indian wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant had his first nets session for Team India after at least 16 months, ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup opener against Ireland, scheduled for June 5.
The ICC T20 World Cup will be played in the West Indies and the USA from June 1 to 29. The Men in Blue will also play Bangladesh in their only warm-up game on June 1 at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Pant, who returned to competitive cricket during the Indian Premier League (IPL) this year following a life-threatening road accident in December 2022, will be making his much-awaited return to the blue colours of the Indian jersey.
In the recently concluded IPL 2024, Rishabh's team Delhi Capitals finished in the sixth spot with seven wins, seven losses and 14 points and failed to move to playoffs. He scored 446 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of over 155 with three half-centuries and emerged as the team's top run-getter.
Pant looked in great shape while practicing, having lost a lot of weight, and sported a much leaner look ahead of the tournament.
In a video posted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Pant said, "This is one thing I missed a lot (practicing with the Indian team and playing for them). Getting back on the field with the Indian jersey on, it is a different feel altogether and this is something I missed a lot. I think seeing the teammates and meeting them again, spending time, having fun with them, enjoying having conversations, really enjoying it."
Pant said that playing in the USA is a different prospect and it has opened a whole new channel for the sport.
"We are used to playing in certain countries but this is a different prospect. It has opened up a different channel for sport because I feel cricket is growing around the world and getting in a country like the US and getting the exposure here would be nice for cricket as well as USA cricket I guess," he said.
He said he is getting used to the conditions and the sun shines a little brighter here in the US and there are new pitches.
"So just getting used to conditions over here and let us see how it goes. Hopefully, I make it count and make it more better from here," he concluded.
In seven T20 WC matches and five innings, he has scored 87 runs at an average of 21.75 across 2021 and 2022 editions, with the best score of 39.
India will start their T20 World Cup campaign on June 5 against Ireland at the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Meanwhile, the most-awaited blockbuster clash between India and Pakistan will take place on June 9. They will later play tournament co-hosts USA (June 12) and Canada (June 15) to wrap up their Group A matches.
In the tournament, India will be aiming to end their ICC trophy drought, having last won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. Since then, India has reached the 50-over World Cup final in 2023, semifinal in 2015 and 2019, the title clash of the ICC World Test Championship in 2021 and 2023, T20 WC final in 2014, semifinals in 2016 and 2022 but failed to secure a big ICC trophy.
India will be aiming to win their first T20 WC title since they won the inaugural edition of the tournament back in 2007 in South Africa. In the last edition held in Australia in 2022, India lost to England by 10 wickets in the semifinals.
India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj

SA women hope to turn fortunes against Australia on the Down Under tour
The South African women’s cricket team has a mountain to climb when they face Australia on home soil in a multi-format tour from January 27 to February 18.
Of course, there’s a sense of vengeance in the air after the Proteas were defeated by the Aussies in the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at Newlands in Cape Town last year.
Tumblr media
The Down Under tour will include three T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals. The two countries will then play their first-ever test match.
Australia now leads both the T20I and ODI global rankings, leaving the Proteas (3rd in the ODI rankings and 5th in the T20I rankings) with a tough task. South Africa’s best ODI result versus Australia was a stalemate in November 2016, and they are 0-7 in T20Is.
The Proteas, led once again by Laura Wolvaardt as captain, need every bit of opposition they can get as they prepare for the September 2024 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. The return of Chloé Tryon, who was away on recent international duty, strengthens the team. Ayanda Hlubi, who was called up to the national team for T20I duty last year, will now play in some ODI matches in Australia.
Hilton Moreeng, the head coach, has voiced his faith in his team, stating that there is a nice balance between experience and youth.
We look forward to building on the fantastic year we had as a team in 2023. Our trip to Bangladesh ended well, and we were able to accomplish our goals and learn more about the game and the red ball.
The chosen squad is really competitive and well-balanced, and we are very confident heading into Australia since we also discussed our abilities with the white ball, where we are going, and what is needed.
Moreeng, who has been a coach for 12 years, just had his contract extended till the end of the 2023–2024 campaign. He’ll also be in charge of a home series against Sri Lanka beginning near the end of March after returning from Australia. The hunt is still on for his replacement.
The same 15 players that recently toured India, where they won the ODI and T20I series, will represent Australia against South Africa in the meantime. According to selector Shawn Flegler, they are excited to meet the Proteas since “South Africa were formidable opponents in the T20 World Cup final in Cape Town.”
TEAMS
SOUTH AFRICA: Laura Wolvaardt (captain), Anneke Bosch, Tazmin Brits, Nadine de Klerk, Mieke de Ridder, Ayanda Hlubi, Sinalo Jafta, Marizanne Kapp, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Suné Luus, Eliz-Mari Marx, Nonkululeko Mlaba, Chloé Tryon, Delmi Tucker.
AUSTRALIA: Alyssa Healy (captain), Darcie Brown, Heather Graham, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Grace Harris, Jess Jonassen, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Wareham.

[ad_1] There was a phase in the 2000s when Mohammad Ashraful was the poster boy of Bangladesh cricket. A century on Test debut at the age of 17, against Sri Lanka in 2001, and another in Bangladesh's first-ever ODI win over Australia in 2005 only seemed to confirm the impression that he was a precocious talent destined for big feats. Tamim Iqbal wasn't included in Bangladesh's squad for World Cup 2023(Getty) As the years passed though, Ashraful turned into a cautionary case of an unfulfilled promise. He reached rock bottom when he admitted to match-fixing in 2013 as his international career ended at 28, after playing 61 Tests, 177 ODIs and 23 T20Is. Currently in India for the ODI World Cup as a commentator for a Dhaka-based sports network, Ashraful, 39, was forthcoming on all things concerning cricket in Bangladesh. “When I started, we had just got Test status. The talent was fine back then. I was considered a talent. I made a century on Test debut. After 23 years (of getting Test status), we should have been much better. The talent is there. Tanzid (Hasan) looks talented. He has the shots. But more than talent, you need to be a performer,” Ashraful said on the sidelines of the India-Bangladesh game on Thursday. “When I started, the role models were Aminul (Islam), Habibul (Bashar), Akram Khan. Now the role models are Tamim (Iqbal), Shakib (Al Hasan), Mahmudullah, Mushfiqur (Rahim). So, the young players should be better than them,” he added. Ashraful was also critical of Tamim's omission for this World Cup. The reason cited by the selectors was a back injury that Tamim has been battling for some time, but there seems to be more to it than meets the eye. His subsequent squabbles with Shakib haven't made for pleasant viewing either. Shakib has called Tamim "childish" and alleged that the opener has put himself ahead of the team's needs. "Look at New Zealand. (Kane) Williamson got injured at the IPL, but New Zealand still chose to take him to the World Cup. Bangladesh could have handled the Tamim situation differently. He's someone who has played international cricket for 17 years. You can't treat him like that. It's not good," Ashraful lamented. According to Ashraful, it has affected Bangladesh’s performances at this World Cup. “Three months ago, things were looking good for Bangladesh in one-day cricket in particular. Suddenly, Tamim got injured and he left. We were genuinely hoping we could make the semis. But the performances haven't been there at this World Cup,” he said. “We don't have players even of the calibre of Afghanistan in the shorter formats. Look at the likes of (Mohammad) Nabi and Rashid (Khan). They have been there for a few years.” For Bangladesh’s young cricketers, Ashraful believes there needs to be a better pathway. "When you play well in U-19 cricket, you should be in U-21, U-23 and A teams. You can fast-track one or two players who are very good but can't do it with everyone. You can't bring them to the senior team straightaway,” he said. It’s been a decade since Ashraful last played for Bangladesh, but he continues to play the game at the lower levels. “I am still playing domestic cricket. I played first-class cricket and List A cricket last season. I also played club cricket in England. I will play club cricket in England next season too.” ABOUT THE AUTHOR Vivek Krishnan is a sports journalist who enjoys covering cricket and football among other disciplines. He wanted to be a cricketer himself but has gladly settled for watching and writing on different sports. ...view detail [ad_2] Source link

During the India vs. Pakistan match in the Cricket World Cup 2023, PCB lodged a formal protest with the ICC over 'inappropriate conduct'
The Pakistan cricket board decided to lodge a formal protest with the International Cricket Council over a number of incidents, including but not limited to the issuance of visas to their journalists and fans.
Tumblr media
When India's bowling coach, Paras Mhambrey, was asked about the same during a press conference ahead of the Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Bangladesh, he refused to delve into the topic.
Mhambrey ducked the question, saying it's not his area of domain. In the press conference, Mhambrey told the reporters, "Honestly, I am the wrong person to answer that question. Really, I have not even heard what you are saying. That's not something; it's not my domain, so really, I can't answer that.”
On Tuesday, the PCB took to X and wrote: "The PCB has lodged another formal protest with the ICC over delays in visas for Pakistani journalists and the absence of a visa policy for Pakistan fans for the ongoing World Cup 2023."
The tweet further read, "The PCB has also filed a complaint regarding inappropriate conduct targeted at the Pakistan squad during the India vs. Pakistan match held on October 14, 2023.”

IND vs AUS World Cup 2023 : Australia win toss , opts to bat first
India vs Australia , ICC World Cup 2023:
At the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Australia captain Pat Cummins won the toss and opted to bat first as his team and the hosts India began respective 2023 World Cup campaigns. The ancient rivalry between India and Australia is ready to write a new chapter at the Chepauk, a stadium that has hosted a number of legendary matches. If the weather cooperates, we might be in for a banger of a match that lives up to the Sunday blockbuster billing.
Shubman Gill’s Dengue Diagnosis Forces Lineup Changes
India will likely be compelled to alter the hierarchy at the top. Shubman Gill, who was diagnosed with dengue in the days leading up to this match, hasn’t even travelled to the Chepauk Stadium with the squad, it turns out. Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma will most likely start the batting. Gill arrived in Chennai wearing a mask and suffering with a mild temperature. Additionally, was identified as having dengue after missing India’s first optional session on Thursday.
Tumblr media
Although head coach Rahul Dravid hasn’t fully ruled him out, it is doubtful that he would play considering that the body takes a long time to recover from the disease’s initial symptoms before breaking out of weakness. Ishan Kishan, who has had some success as the opener while also achieving the quickest ODI double century, will get another chance to bat in Gill’s place.
Also Read: Bangladesh vs Afghanistan World Cup 2023: Bangladesh Lose Two Wickets in chase of 157
The No. 8 puzzle is also true. It is legitimate to be tempted to move forward with either Shardul Thakur or Ravichandran Ashwin. The black-soil surface in Chennai, though, could just give the off-spinner the go-ahead. After all, Ashwin has consistently shown to be quite a nuisance at Chepauk.
Key pointers surrounding the India vs Australia World Cup clash:
In the history of the 50-over World Cup, India has only defeated Australia four times.
Shubman Gill will be out with dengue for India, while Ishan Kishan to be promoted to opener with Rohit Sharma.
Only Virat Kohli has an ODI century in Chepauk among the current Indian team.
Australia has lost 4 of their past 5 one-day international matches.
As the second spinner, Kuldeep Yadav is set to join Ravichandran Ashwin in India’s playing XI.
Australia has won all three of its prior matches in Chepauk, remaining unbeaten in World Cup games there.

Hardik Pandya’s ankle injury has ruled him out. This Player is Selected To Replace Him In India
An ankle injury will keep India’s all-rounder Hardik Pandya out of the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
Tumblr media
It was confirmed on Saturday by the International Cricket Council that India’s all-rounder Hardik Pandya will miss the current Cricket World Cup 2023 because of an ankle ailment. When India played Bangladesh on October 19 at the MCA Stadium in Pune, Hardik twisted his ankle. In the matches that India played against Sri Lanka, England, and New Zealand, he did not participate.
“India’s unbeaten start to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup has received a massive hit with news that star all-rounder Hardik Pandya has failed to recover from his ankle injury and will miss the remainder of the tournament,” the International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement.
As a replacement for Hardik, bowler Prasidh Krishna has been added to the team by the ICC Event Technical Committee.
“His place in India’s squad will be taken by Prasidh Krishna, with the inexperienced fast bowler parachuted into the playing group after being approved by the tournament’s Event Technical Committee on Saturday,” stated the International Cricket Council.
Wasim Khan (ICC General Manager – Cricket and ETC Chair), Chris Tetley (ICC Head of Events), Hemang Amin (Acting CEO – BCCI), Gaurav Saxena (General Manager – Operations, BCCI), Russell Arnold, and Simon Doull (Independent Representatives) make up the Event Technical Committee of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.
India defeated Sri Lanka by 302 runs earlier this week to go to the Cricket World Cup semifinals. India bowled Sri Lanka out for a meagre total of 55 after registering a massive total of 357/8.
With seven points from seven games, India leads the points standings. On Sunday, they play South Africa, who are ranked second.
India’s Updated Squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023:
Rohit Sharma (C), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Prasidh Krishna, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav.
