Yasopp could be one of the reasons for increased attention on Usopp's spotlight (tl;dr)
I know I keep bringing up Yasopp, and it may seem redundant, but I want to emphasize that there’s no reason we shouldn’t get at least some answers about him. One of the most important questions is: Does Yasopp know Banchina is dead?
This is a game-changing question because it would reveal whether Yasopp was keeping tabs on Usopp, how much he knows about his son’s journey, and whether he was aware of Banchina’s illness. Why did he leave, knowing she was sick—despite her encouragement for him to follow his dream? Was there something dangerous about his presence in Syrup Village? Was he forced out, with Shanks as his only option? Because if he was simply hanging around in a nearby island/village but never reaching out to his sick wife and child, that paints a much different picture of his character. And we don’t have enough information to confidently say Yasopp is a bad person. But answering whether he knows about Banchina’s death would provide key context.
Another major question: How and why did Shanks seek out Yasopp?
In Strong World Episode 0, it’s mentioned that Yasopp was already well-known for his sniping skills, which means Shanks deliberately recruited him. But why? Was it purely because of Yasopp’s skill, or was there more behind it? Did Shanks help him escape something in Syrup Village? Did Yasopp have a past that made him an ideal crew member? Understanding this would not only shed light on Yasopp’s decision to leave his family but also reveal more about Shanks’ mindset when forming his crew.
And that ties into more significant questions:
- When did Yasopp develop Observation Haki? We know when Usopp awakened his, but did Yasopp always have it?
- Why did Yasopp want to become a "brave warrior of the sea"? Did he have a background similar to Usopp’s, or was it something else?
- Why was Banchina so determined for Yasopp to chase his dream, even at the cost of leaving his family? She was a good woman, so something significant must have happened for her to support his decision.
- Why is Yasopp so loyal to Shanks? This could explain why he was willing to leave his wife and son behind in the first place.
A crucial emotional question is: Why is Yasopp afraid to meet Usopp?
In his filler encounter with Daddy Masterson, Yasopp seems convinced that Usopp would hate him. That suggests guilt—but guilt for what exactly? Just for leaving, or for something more? Understanding this would clarify why Yasopp never tried to reconnect with his son.
When did Yasopp find out Usopp was on Luffy’s crew?
It’s likely he learned after Usopp’s bounty became public, as we see in Dressrosa when he’s holding a newspaper and laughing. But did he know before that? Did he recognize Sniper King?
And then there’s Usopp’s perspective on Yasopp—which is strange because Usopp almost never mentions his father. After the Syrup Village arc and a few minor moments (like the deleted Water 7 scene with Garp), Yasopp’s existence barely comes up, even from Luffy.
- Does Usopp secretly resent Yasopp? Not necessarily in an “I hate you for leaving” way, but perhaps in a “I’ll never measure up to you” way.
- Does Usopp realize he has Observation Haki? Given his personality, he might not even fully grasp it, despite using it at Dressrosa.
Back to Yasopp:
- Does he know Banchina was sick? If not, why didn’t he check in? If he did, what was so dire that he still chose to leave?
- Did he leave to protect Syrup Village? Was his presence a threat to Banchina and Usopp? Did he sacrifice his reputation for their safety?
Lastly, a fun but potentially meaningful question: Does Sniper Island actually exist?
While it might never be confirmed, it could tie into why snipers are so crucial in pirate crews. Three out of four Yonkos have snipers—why? Is there an underground sniper network? Why was Usopp hesitant to take on the role?
So, the big question is: Which of these revelations would truly change the game and redefine Yasopp’s character?

The Problem With Yasopp
So like many people I was genuinely surprised by Netflix One Piece, adaption, which turned out the exact opposite of pretty much every single travesty that america has made when adapting Manga and Anime.
It certainly was not without flaws, for one thing it needed to be at least 3-5 episodes longer in order to fix it's pacing issues if it wanted to get all of East Blue into one season, and the fight scenes while very well choreographed, didn't exactly sell me on the superhuman strength of most of these characters.
However, there was one thing that genuinely pissed me off, in large part because the american adapters changed something they didn't like, in order to fit "western sensibilites" and in doing so, completely missing the point, and frankly tragedy of the original context.
That of course, is the character of Usopp's relationship with his parents Yasopp and Banchina, and the rather sad tale of plans going completely arry due to twists of fate.
In the west, the character of Yasopp has been a rather contentious one, for several reasons, but also one that has been a bit altered by the changes from Japanese to English.
Yasopp is critiqued heavily by people who don't like him for abandoning his kid, and his wife to seek adventure on the high seas. Now this is not untrue, but there is a bit of context here that's a bit lost in translation.
And you can really tell that, because the way Netflix portrays Yasopp leaving is the surface level one you might get if you just read Syrup Village arc, and you don't pay any attention at all to the timeline given.
In the neflix series, it's explicitly said that Yasopp left Usopp and his mother while Usopp was still a baby. That is such a common reading, that it's actually what the One Piece Wiki claims happened(Another example of why you should always be critical of Wiki's).
The actual Manga tells a different story.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/41ed80cd0b91d857624950c1b8f25f3c/bff2bc26488ff830-b6/s640x960/22cb69862259da3c07993be47852ca0ee457731f.jpg)
Yasopp left Syrup village right before Banchina unexpedetly got sick with the disease that ultimatly killed her.
When Usopp is so touchy against Kuro about him badmouting his father, it's not in the context of him idolizing some father he never met, because Usopp and Yasopp knew and loved each other dearly. Usopp's wish to see his dad again isn't some wish to meet the father he only knows through stories, but to reconnect with the dad he loved so much growing up and was sad when he left.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cdbf801c0a753c773d66f3a24e13ad7c/bff2bc26488ff830-be/s640x960/7b2a2b45ae42f521af2b363e32c76bdd8ef519e3.jpg)
And then of course there is the glory of mistraslation. If you've read this part of the manga, you might rightly be wondering, what sort of woman would be proud of the man who abandoned her to take care of their kid while he sought adventure.
The answer, which the english translation does not give, is a woman who was the one to convince him to go out on that journey in the first place.
Because that is what happened in the orignal manga. It was Banchina, for reasons we don't fully understand or have the context for, eho convinced her husband to go out and seek his dreams.
That's the reason why she is so certain Yasopp will NOT be coming home, but why she is also not bitter about it. She was the one who encouraged Yasopp to go out to sea, while she stayed home and took care of their kid, until he grew old enough to care for himself, and seek the seas himself if he wished.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/cbfbae944b126efb80200556e693277c/bff2bc26488ff830-8a/s540x810/5467cd6bd386175bfcd241ee453e22a11a7ea9a0.jpg)
The story of Yasopp, Usopp and his wife is a genuine tragedy, but not because Yasopp abandoned Usopp before he ever got to know him, but because Usopp's parents made plans for the future, that while not perfect by any stretch, seemed workable enough... only for the entire thing to come crumbling down after Yasopp left due to something as mundane as a random disease.
One can certainly make an argument that this was NOT the best course of action for Yasopp and Banchina to take, but it's not the complete deadbeat dad who abandons his baby trope that the Netflix series portrays it as.
Further hammering in that this was a bit more complicated than that, Yasopp seems to have been one of the very first crew members Shanks tried to recruit, having sought him out not long after Roger died... And Yasopp seems to have flat out rejected him, as he stayed with Banchina for years and years afterwards.
It adds a lot of context to the idea that Banchina was the one who ultimately convinced Yasopp to go out and chase his dreams while she took care of the kid... Because it took years and years for it to ultimately conclude at this course of action. Yasopp would continue to reject Shanks offer to join him for years to instead to take care of his wife and kid, until about a year before Shanks met Luffy, when his wife told him to go.
It's a hell of a lot more nuanced and interesting than what Netflix did, that's for damn sure.

Usopp loved his mother.
She worked tirelessly to feed and bathe him. Then play and teach him. Then talk him through the chores when she was too weak to do them herself.
She worked with a whole bunch of papers and spilled ink; he hadn't known it at the time, but she was a novelist and a very good one at that. Her stories kept the roof over their heads, brought them thick coats for winter, and gifted an assortment of toys and paints for Usopp's enjoyment. Sure, he couldn't always get exactly what he wanted, but what kid did?
She raised him to be a good man- a happy man. Put her all into making sure his needs were met and that he'd try to see all the good in the world around him. Appreciate the things he had and not get wrapped up in the small things that go wrong. Like his father did, she'd say fondly.
Usopp loved his mother. He whispered it to himself aloud.
He loved his mother, but she wasn't perfect.
If he weren't totally alone, laying awake in his hammock, he wouldn't even think it. Because she did so much for him. Gave up so much for him. To have him. To stay with him.
And yet-
And yet he thought about it sometimes. The little imperfect moments- ones he'd give anything to experience again. The way some days she'd get all uppity about his patched clothes. The way she'd dismiss him when he mentioned something he learned from the owner of the grocery store. Say you can just pick off the green bits and the bread would be just fine.
The way some days she'd just watch him eat dinner. Explain she'd already eaten with a smile. But her plate was never in the sink.
Whenever they were walking around town together, everyone said their greetings- their hellos and goodbyes- and they were civil. Kind, even. They had no problem arguing, driving hard bargains and making snide remarks about his father, but these were good people. People Usopp was supposed to call if there was ever some kind of emergency, because they would help.
They would always help.
If only someone would ask.
It made him angry. So unbelievably unfathomably angry. So angry he wanted to break every dish in the kitchen, bite through the mast, climb to the top of the crow's nest and scream.
Because even Usopp, a child still small enough to be carried at the hip- though that may have been his mother's stubbornness rather than an indicator of age- could see that his mother desperately needed help.
And he should be mad at the townsfolk. The way they looked the other way, waiting and waiting for... something. A tangible something they could point at and say they needed to intervene. They didn't need to wait so long. They said so themselves not a week after the funeral.
He should be mad at them.
But he can only find anger for her.
Because even when she fell visibly ill- even when the town's only doctor was making monthly, then weekly, then daily trips- she never told anyone. Kept it all to herself. Tried to downplay it to Usopp too, but Usopp wasn't stupid and he'd overheard her talking to the doctor plenty of times. He knew she wasn't well.
And maybe that was the real problem.
He had no right to be angry with his mother. She was doing what she thought was best. It wasn't her fault the stress of her daily life had exacerbated her illness to the point she was bedridden. It wasn't her fault she had to work and raise Usopp entirely on her own. Wasn't the fault of the townsfolk either, considering the brave front his mother always put on.
No, at the end of the day, there was only one person to blame.
Usopp.
He knew how little she was eating. Heard her stifled sobs through his bedroom wall. Saw the way she hunched and stumbled when it was just them.
Most of all, he witnessed firsthand how each day she would get a little bit slower, a little bit weaker, a little bit quieter, until one day she just... stopped.
He knew. Maybe not in the right words or with the right meanings, but he knew there was something wrong. And all he had to do was talk to someone- anyone. Any of the numerous people around town who he was supposed to run and call for any kind of trouble he was in. For any kind of trouble they were in.
It was all he had to do.
But he promised. A vow that would last longer than her. That he couldn't tell the townsfolk how sick she'd gotten. How sick she let herself seem to him. How sick she actually was.
Usopp wasn't one to break his promises. Not to his ailing mother.
So he devised something else. Something to at least get her back on her feet again. Happy like she used to be. Happy like she taught him to be.
He'd run around town yelling about pirates! Pirates! Pirates seen off the north shore!
The whole town was beside itself, shuttering their windows and barring up doors. He had everyone running scared and was finding his own enjoyment in his 'noble' deed. The only one who didn't believe him, was his mother.
He kept trying. Day after day of pirates, pirates, pirates. His father, returning triumphant from his journey and ready to bring his ship doctor to cure her. His father, rushing into the house like a storm, a fish on his back that can make anyone the healthiest they can be. His father, whisking her to Meshi for good food and a joke so funny she laughs the sickness away.
His father, home again.
She didn't believe him.
She was proud she'd married his father. Happy she'd told him to go, those scarce few years ago. But without fail, the only lie she had never believed, was Usopp's father returning home to see them. To see her.
He wasn't here; his journey wasn't done; don't say something stupid. Each time, he was met with a different response, all saying the same thing.
His father wasn't coming.
Usopp's misplaced anger would flare, briefly pointed at a new target, before dying down again. He couldn't even figure out how to send a letter informing his father of the news. Even with heavy coaxing, the townsfolk admitted they didn't know either; his father never told Usopp the name of his ship or his crew and his mother had never written it down anywhere. Up until meeting Luffy, he had no clue.
And by the time he did know, he was nursing lumps on his head while listening to a lecture about not wasting Nami's paper. The overflowing trash bin was practically laughing at his pitiful, crumpled up attempts.
Soon enough he was swept up in dangerous adventures left and right and he let himself forget about it. Or rather, did forget about it. Consciously, unconsciously, it didn't matter. He forgot. And he only remembered late at night when he had trouble sleeping, wondering where his father might be, if he was boasting about his wife and kid back home, not knowing half of his little family had left him.
Usopp loved his mother. But why didn't she just ask for-
He startled at the sudden, loud laughter from above. Then the thud of Luffy jumping down, followed by Zoro's boots tapping down the ladder rungs.
They were talking about something- a fish Luffy caught or a Sea King Zoro had cut down. Usopp couldn't tell the way his heartbeat was in his ears and the way he was trying to keep perfectly, utterly still.
He should've talked to them. Said something like a goodnight, maybe. Even grumbling about how loud they were being would be fine.
But he was gripped with a nameless fear. Something that twined its cold, skeletal fingers around his throat, whispering notions of being caught for an irredeemable crime. Twisting his stomach in knots at even the thought of making a sound.
A woosh of air and Luffy had climbed into the hammock above him. A deep snore and Zoro was out too.
Usopp sighed, letting himself untense as the spectre of death started to retreat. He stared at Luffy's vest- at his back, resting in the netting. Barely an arms length away.
He just had to reach for it.
It was all he had to do.
Usopp bit his lip, pressed a hand to his mouth and turned on his side, ignoring the tears staining his skin.

Hi! Normally I send a message to bloggers(?) that I like by making a pretty low effort drawing on my phone's gallery. But you're getting special treatment and getting a headcannon of mine instead.. shh.
Usami headcanon that won't get out of my head: Usopp and Nami are half-siblings. Kind of.. Belle'mére and Banchina were pretty much best friends, and so were Usopp, Nami and Nojiko (haha a marine and the wife of a pirate haha). Usopp is the youngest, wow. Anyways, all of them lived at Syrup Village, which was somewhat close to Cocoyashi, so after Banchina lost the fight with her illness, they moved over to Cocoyashi and Belle'mére adopted Usopp because she's the sweetest.. despite struggling to feed herself and the kids. After Arlong's capture of Coco Vil, Usopp somehow managed to escape and go back to Syrup Village. He DID try to drag Nami and Nojiko with him, but you know, whole Nami's backtory ordeal.. So he escaped alone. This sneaky pinocchio always managed to atleast wave a hi to them everyday, but the guilt of not being able to help his 'sisters' would always prevail. They always communicated through letters until Arlong discovered all of it and made poor Nami suffer more, and doubled the fishmen around, so Usopp couldn't even keep contact with anybody there. They only began talking again close to when we discover Nami's past, when she's already 18, but Luffy didn't meet her yet at this point. As guessed it was something pretty angsty and Usopp's saddened look would simply be responded with ignorance—still, we know he always felt how she was also hurt from inside. So when they properly reunite again in the Strawhat crew, it's pretty awkward and uncomfortable, really. Usopp is afraid of saying something and worsening everything, but he knows he needs to say sorry. It's not like Nami really blames him for everything but, damn.. At some point they get to reconciliate with the rights of bazillion tears and apologies. Of course something from YEARS took a bit of time to heal all its scars, but now, Usopp and Nami are one of the most inseparable (is that how you write it?) duos in this wacky and pretty mix of a pirate crew. Yes, maybe they still not so secretely consider eachother siblings and YES, they still catch themselves calling the other "lil bro" or "big sis". WHO CARES IF IT'S JUST ONE YEAR DIFFERENCE? I DON'T?!??!
just sent this to say that I am in LOVE wih your overall style like ejndjdj?? It's so so good-looking and it's all so cutesy!!
AHHHH THE ABSOLUTE JOYFUL JUMPSCARE I GOT FROM THIS??? FIRST OF ALL, ABSOLUTELY HONORED TO BE GIVEN SPECIAL TREATMENT IN THE FORM OF SUCH AN AWESOME HC AND THANK YOU FOR THE KIND WORDS MADE MY WEEK🫶🫶, SECONDLY OH MY GOODNESS I never would’ve thought abt this but it just FITS so well and THE BELLE-MÈRE AND BANCHINA FRIENDSHIP UGH, emotionally kicked me in the stomach with the letters and Arlong (Hate him, would happily make sushi out of him and feed him to the sea kings any time of the week) but still so happy with their duo coming together once again ( AND THE LIL BRO/BIG SIS THING UGH MY HEART!!)
(Currently thinking about how Nojiko and Ussop’s meeting would’ve changed, Ussop’s dynamic with Sanji (Considering the ‘NAMI-SWANNNN’ thing, possible protective lil bro??), and just Ussop and NAMI in general <33)

If Luffy is Brazilian and he grew up in Foosha then it means that Foosha = Brazil and since Shanks and crew spent a lot of time there I like to think he’s familiar with the culture and this is all an excuse to draw Shanks and Yasopp bawling to Evidências because I think they would. Source? Me. A Brazilian.
