Learning From The Temporary

Education spaces are mostly defined by structure, dispositions and materials. When the necessity of specific situation creates conditions, which needs to be satisfied in a very short time, then the program searches temporary forms.

One example is a prototype floating structure, which was used for Makoko Floating School as a pilot project.  An innovative approach addresses community’s social and physical needs in view of the impact of climate change and a rapidly urbanizing African context. A Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi, who was learning almost a decade at OMA, designed a structure that generate sustainable, ecological, alternative building systems and urban water cultures for the teeming population of Africa’s coastal regions.

The project was awarded the Silver Lion prize at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia as “a powerful demonstration, be it in Lagos or in Venice, that architecture, at once iconic and pragmatic, can amplify the importance of education”.

The Sichuan province in China was hit by an earthquake in 2008 measuring a magnitude of eight on the Richter scale. The district of Chengdu was destroyed. To aid the reconstruction of the city, Shigeru Ban's research center, banlab, collaborated with several Japanese and Chinese universities to design and construct temporary classrooms constructed from paper tubes for the Hualin Temporary Elementary School.

The temporary classroom buildings were designed and constructed using paper tubes, which are cheap, recyclable, reusable, and readily available on site. These were the first buildings in China to have a paper-tube structure, and were also the first school buildings to be rebuilt in the earthquake-stricken area.

Natural disasters are not the only reason for lack of space. In a small Slovenian town close to the border with Austria kindergartens unexpectedly became too small for the increasing number of young children and the existing kindergarten infrastructure had to be quickly expanded to meet the rising demand.

Temporary Kindergarten Ajda was a temporary annex to the existing kindergarten in the town of Ravne na Koroškem. Jure Kotnik incorporated three containers to the core of the existing building and joined them into one room for 14 children.

The container case remains a good example of how temporariness and slim budgets are no excuse for the absence of child-friendly design. Sometimes temporariness of schools just transform this fact because it becomes an important generator of space. Like in the case of Gando Primary School in Burkina Faso, where grew up also the architect Francis Kéré.

When Francis was a child, he travelled nearly 40 kilometers to the next village in order to attend a school with poor lighting and ventilation. The experience of trying to learn in this oppressive environment affected him so much that when he began to study architecture in Europe, he decided to reinvest his knowledge towards building a new school in his home village.

The clay bricks have the added advantage of being cheap, easy to produce, and also providing thermal protection against the hot climate. Although the plans for the Primary School were drawn by Francis, the success of the project can be attributed to the close involvement of the local villagers. Traditionally, members of a whole village community work together to build and repair homes in rural Burkina Faso. After the school was completed, it became a landmark of community pride and received the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2004.

Created by Marjetica Potrč and STEALTH.unlimited displays the Thunmanskolan's schoolyard in Knivsta processes of harvesting energy from the sun and the wind, through man-made technology and photosynthesis. The schoolyard consists of two parts, the Fruit Farm - with hands - on harvest of apples and pears, and the hi-tech Energy Farm - a hybrid system consisting of solar panels and a wind turbine that transform energy from the sun and wind into electricity, sufficient to light the schoolyard.
