Plant of the Day
Wednesday 10 August 2022
Even though the violet-blue flowers of Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' (Balkan clary) are over the seedheads create a great texture in the border. This plant is a compact perennial which makes mounds of aromatic, grey-green foliage.

The flowering herbaceous perennials in these large island beds seem like giant brushstrokes of paint on the landscape. The red-orange of Helenium 'Moerheim Beauty' (sneezeweed), the pink of Veronicastrum virginicum 'Fascination' (Culver's root) and the yet to fully open Hylotelephium (sedum, stonecrop) flowers with the purple of Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' (Balkan clary).

A striking combination of horizontal orange flower heads and vertical spikes of purple flowers. The Achillea 'Terracotta' (yarrow) is an upright, clump forming plant with feathery grey-green leaves and flat sprays of orange flowers which fade to cream. The contrasting purple flower spikes are produced by Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' (Balkan clary). Both species need an open sunny position with a moist but well-drained soil.

The contrast of the flower colours and forms with the pink, horizontal Achillea millefolium 'Lilac Beauty' (yarrow) and purple, vertical Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' (Balkan clary) provide a dramatic display. Both of these herbaceous perennials grow best in full sun. The pruned tree in the background is Pyrus salicifolia ‘Pendula’ (weeping silver pear).

The colourful new foliage of Cotinus 'Grace' (smoke tree) is a result of hard pruning (stooling) this deciduous shrub in the winter. The vibrant crimson-purple leaves were offset by the adjacent violet-blue flowers of the herbaceous perennial Salvia nemorosa 'Ostfriesland' (Balkan clary) which flowers through the summer and into the autumn.

The dark purple flowered Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna' (Balkan clary) was working well associated with the paler flowered Salvia x sylvestris ‘Blauhügel' (wood sage) at the front of the rose garden borders at Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK. These herbaceous perennials make an eye-catching display for weeks in a sunny border, they are drought-tolerant once established and are popular with bees.
