Dream guests on the Mormon story podcast (or similar)
(Aka Mormons/ex Mormons I’d love to hear more from and/who I’d like to see engage in a debate with a non-yes man)
-Leon and Audrey (I respect their privacy but dear god what wouldn’t I give to hear from the only OG brown kid to actually (for a while) buy into fundamentalist Mormonism)
-Gwen and Bea (would love to hear about their fundie mormon x mainstream mormon clash was and also their experiences with mormon brand homophobia)
-Kody brown (I would just LOVE to see him try to hold his own in a debate with someone who 1) is knowledgeable 2) isn’t a kissass 3) isn’t aggressively into toxic masculinity. Also I want him to explain what he actually means by “loyal” because in my neck of the woods loyal=not cheating but that can’t be what he means)
- The Winder family (an independent polygamist family who was on seeking sister wife. Husband and wife #1 grew up mainstream lds but received testimony and married wife #2 who grew up aub)
-Meri, janelle, Christine, kids (just because I’d want them to be confronted about their pyramid schemes lmao)
-Christines mom (if she’s still alive? I’m not 100%…. But I’m very interested in her leaving polygamy while her kids stayed in it)
-Jodi arias (joking)
-That one family on on seeking sister wife (Allred?) who got catfished/scammed on national television TWICE lmao like how do you continue living after that

In case you’ve managed to miss this sportsball tempest, we have a situation that is evidently Juicy Smollette 2.0.
Except this time there were thousands of witnesses and television cameras and no one but the female Juicy saw or heard anything, yet the media and intersectional zealots with institutional power are once again fully engaged in the garment rending performance and punitive action and indictment against completely innocent people.
BYU has been in the crosshairs for being a relatively conservative and religious university in the world of major college athletics. They’re a whipping boy.
We’re once again in an era where baseless bigoted accusations are made and the accused are punished with ferocity despite a complete lack of evidence. It’s on a collective scale now.
It’s retrograde. It’s what people fought to put in the dirt for generations.
And here it is again.

Good slides from BYU Multicultural Student Services’ Instagram
————————————————————
Microaggressions are indirect, subtle, or unintentional discriminatory acts against members of a marginalized group.
Because most people today do not engage in overtly hostile and openly biased behavior towards minority groups, many think discrimination doesn’t exist. These same individuals unwittingly perpetuate microaggressions.
From the outside, microaggressions can seem small or insignificant, a growing body of research shows that microaggressions are harmful to minority groups and reinforce damaging stereotypes. To a person not on the receiving end, the microaggression can seem harmless, but the person on the receiving end of the microaggression, they likely have been on the receiving end of many similar microaggressions and their cumulative effect is damaging.
————————————————————
Here’s examples of microaggressions:
Alien in own land      “Where are you from?” “Where were you born?” “You speak good English.” When someone has identified as bisexual and asking a guy if he has a girlfriend, or when is she going to get a boyfriend (disregarding their identity as bi).
Ascription of intelligence      “You are a credit to your race.” “You are so articulate.” Asking an Asian person to help with a Math or Science problem
Color Blindness      “When I look at you I don’t see color.” “America is a melting pot.” “There is only one race, the human race.”
Criminality--assumption of criminal status      A white woman clutching her purse as a Black or Latino approaches. A store owner following a customer around the store. A white person waiting to ride the next elevator when a person of color is on it. “Gay people recruit children.”
Denial of individual bigotry      “I have several Black friends.” “As a woman, I know what you go through as a racial minority.” “It’s all in your head.” “You’re being too sensitive.”
Myth of meritocracy      “I believe the most qualified person should get to attend this university.” “Everyone can succeed in this society if they work hard enough.”
Pathologizing cultural values/communication styles      Asking a Black person, “Why do you have to be so loud?” Dismissing an individual who brings up race/culture in a work or school setting. “Do you have to dress so gay?”
Second-class citizen       A person of color is mistaken for a service worker. “You people...” Assuming a gay man works as an interior designer or beautician.
Environmental microaggressions      University buildings named after slave owners. Television shows set in a city like New York or Los Angeles which have diverse populations, but the characters on the show are predominantly white. No gender-neutral bathroom existing in a public space. An absence of books with LGBTQ characters at a library. Difficulty changing the sex indicator on government-issued identification and on legal documents. A school not allowing clubs based on race, culture or queer identities, for example, a high school not allowing a GSA club
Offending without really trying by using common phrases based on stereotypes      “Indian giver.” “That’s so gay.” “I jewed him down.” Imitating accents, such as “ching chang chong.”
Use of sexist/heterosexist language      Use of incorrect gender pronouns, especially after the person has been corrected or informed of the person’s pronouns. “You’re too pretty to be a lesbian.” Describing a gender-nonconforming person as a “he-she” or a “she-male.” “She suffers from same sex attraction” “There’s only 2 genders.”
Traditional gender-role prejudice      A gay couple holding hands in public receive looks of disgust or curiosity from strangers & passersby. “No homo!” “Who is the woman in the relationship?”
Non-affirming comments.      Warning someone about the dangers of identifying as LGBTQ. “You’re going to hell.” “People come out for the attention”...or “because it’s trendy.” Trying to prevent a queer person from being around other queer people. “It’s okay that you’re gay but don’t do anything gay around me.” “Just so you know, I’m not into girls, so don’t try anything.” “It’s just a phase.” “It’s a choice.” “Why do you dress like that?” “You’re just confused.” Assuming a bi person would be open to joining couples for a threesome. Asking a trans person what’s in their pants or if they’ve had surgery.

Oh my god I just realised Jake was actually thinking of Dirk when kissing the poster.
Also, this may be a stupid question but,
I really enjoy reading what you write and I wonder how you talk like you do. Like, how did you expand your vocabulary and learn to analyse character and such? I honestly don’t know how to explain which is a bit ironic.
I just really enjoy consuming your content :)
THANKS!!!! and yeah he was.
I don't know how to really explain this one since since anything tangentially related to storytelling is pretty much... an interest I have? I tend to read author dissertations/essays/speeches and listen to a lot of lectures on writing and literature when I'm working, for the fun of it. I also tend to do this with comics & movies I just go prodding around for theory depending on the piece :/
Though if I were to cite my biggest inspirations rn in terms of prose and lyricism in narrative, it's definitely a grain of sand next to: Terry Pratchett, Ursula K. Le Guin, Seth Dickinson, Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Daniel Kraus, Diana Wynne Jones, Machado de Assis, and with special mention to William Goldman's 'The Princess Bride'.
(I read Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games growing up and I think these books still hold up re; a post-myth gamefied dystopian narrative on deeply traumatized children, if you're interested. I reread them last year-ish. The movies are NOOOOOT good. I also obligatorily have to note I went through the entirety of A Song of Ice and Fire by G.R.R Martin age 14 and while its not a series I particularly... recommend on account of how meandering and overlong all that grimdark bullshit can get on top of the eye-rolling shock value improv that screwed over an entire television age, it does inform my general lexicon on bullshit overlong epics. If you're blissfully unaware and looking into these please be warned of everything you could possibly be warned of being present in these books. Do not believe fluff reviews. The female characters are basically treated like garbage on a 1:10 ratio. Just read the authors above!)
I browse a lot of books on the topic whenever one catches my interest, and if that's what you're looking for id recommend Monkeys With Typewriters by scarlett thomas & Steering the Craft by ursula k le guin. There might be better ones out there but I like reasoning next to theory not just the thing by itself. Reading a lot of authors and mixing up short stories with long ones over the past years has definitely changed how I think about story structure over time, so I can't understate the importance of just... finding what you like to read and going out of your way to try other things sometimes.
Brandon Sanderson has been trying to bring some of his creative writing lectures at BYU to the general public through youtube, and while these focus on traditional publishing (meaning fantasy and sci-fi books and their production pipeline in a professional setting) he has a lot of fun insights from being a long time author of BEHEMOTH sized books. It's very educational. If you're not interested in all of the videos, I can very much recommend the single 40min lecture on Short Stories (With guest instructor Mary Robinette Kowal) as an awesome breakdown of story structure, where to begin plotting, pulling apart/milking your ideas and executing them in an engaging timeframe, which works for short AND long stories. I hope at least one of these connections can serve as some help!

Dwight in Shining Armor After Dwight (Sloane Morgan Siegel), a 21st century teen, falls into an ancient, underground chamber – he awakens a warrior princess
(Caitlin Carmichael), her court magician (Joel McCrary), and many medieval villains that have been sleeping for a thousand years.
Consequently, he is now spellbound to protect the princess from her hordes of enemies. High school just got a lot weirder.

Apparently Canada requires diversity in the film & television production it subsidizes with tax breaks and other government funding. BYUtv and the Hallmark Channel went without notice of violating these policies by having unwritten rules about not including LGBTQ characters on its channels. But a story was printed that brought to light this unwritten rule.
The Canadian government threatened to cancel tax breaks, the Writers Guild of Canada and other unions, guilds, production companies and funding agencies made strong statements against homophobic, racist, ableist, and sexist broadcasters and production companies with a call to cut their funding.
Suddenly, BYYtv went from saying “our audience isn’t ready” for LGBTQ characters to getting LGBTQ characters on the upcoming series Overlord And The Underwoods and in the future seasons  The Parker Andersons & Amelia Parker which is currently airing on BYUtv
2022 will be 25 years since Ellen Degeneres’ character on the sitcom Ellen came out in 1997. And that’s probably the year we start seeing queer characters on BYUtv. which seems on track for LDS Church.
Also, the idea that BYUtv was able to avoid others knowing it had a spoken rule discriminating against queer characters but on paper there was nothing to suggest that such characters would not be allowed reminds me of last year’s Honor Code debacle where the entire section forbidding homosexual actions on campus or by BYU students was removed from the Honor Code, but a “clarification” said the rules remain in place even though they no longer appear in the Honor Code.
This first crack which allows queer characters on BYUtv is brought to us courtesy of outside influence, both in terms of a potential increase in the cost of creating programming for the channel, but also from the unions, guilds and other organizations that cover the many creative workers it takes to create television shows. And some bad press, too. This is, sadly, too often what it takes.

My “Best Writing”
Synthesis Paper
The very first phone was invented in 1876, with the intention of being able to communicate with others in just a few minutes. Since then, mankind has made more remarkable and life changing inventions in technology. The human race can now send texts from just about anywhere, have access to the internet 24/7, play games, make phone calls, etc. Our lives have been virtualized. All this change to the way people live, has effected the way people are communicating with others.
In the day to day life, we are surrounded by so much technology. We keep it in our phones in our pockets ready to grab when it buzzes or rings. We have almost trained ourselves to keep half our attention on our phones and the other half on the daily activities. Changes to technology is never ceasing. It continues to develop and continues to grasp our attention. All of this change makes some people wonder if it is interrupting the way we interact or if it is good for us as mankind.
In Steven Johnson’s article, “Watching TV Makes You Smarter,” he says that shows now a days are cognitively more demanding, requiring the viewer to analyze and figure out what it happening. It also requires that the viewer to pay closer attention than shows in the past. This has fostered the idea that “video games and violent television dramas and juvenile sitcoms -- turn out to be nutritional after all” (2). This idea is easy to identify when comparing a show like The Voice to something like Criminal Minds. However, not everyone watches shows that have complex storylines and requires one’s full attention, which I think is a big flaw in his theory. However, he also goes on to say that you cannot look at the media like a “series of life lessons” but rather a “cognitive workout” (3) I have to agree with his statement because not all shows and media are the most appropriate or morally accepted, but that does not mean that they do not require thinking and analyzing. When one is able to get over the moral issue or whatever stands in their way, one can see that there is some cognitive value to those shows. Johnson’s values are not the most widely accepted by people.
In Sherry Turkle’s essay, “Can You Hear Me Now,” she explains that with all of the technology “we may be connecting globally but relating parochially” (509). I believe this is true, now that we can connect with more people much easier than before, we are so consumed with it that we do not seem to remember to connect with those around us. As the essay goes on she gives some points that strengthen her position. First, she suggests that with technology becoming a large part of our lives, we are unconsciously letting it become us. We are too wrapped up in it that we forget to separate ourselves from it. Next, she says that technology has created a “culture that has decreased the time available for us to sit and think” (507). We are constantly on watch for the next opportunity to pull out our phones and look at the next text or next news story. With that her very last point is that it is hard give your full attention while also focusing on something on your phone. This happens all the time throughout the day. I find myself talking to people who then get on their phones to check Instagram or to send a text. There is no way for someone to give their full attention when they have technology on their mind.
Both sources make great points. Johnson points out that media can be a more challenging thing than it used to. It requires more work for the brain. Turkle gives more solid points however, addressing more than one issue with technology like social interactions and our own behavior. Johnson only addresses how through television can be considered a healthy form of technology.
There will always be many different views about the technology debate. There will be those that argue that technology is good and even healthy and those that believe that it is slowly destructing our ability to connect. I think that the effects of technology are our choice to make. If we choose to use technology in productive ways, it should not have a large effect on the way we connect with each other. However, when we let it consume our lives we make that choice to let it. It is honestly our choice to do whatever we want with it.
