She may not be on the ice with the guys, but she’s the one in front of the camera and behind the scenes keeping you connected to everything Bruins!

As a competitive swimmer, I had a very specific routine.

On the morning of competitions, I would eat the same breakfast. I would listen to the same motivating music. I would do the exact same stretches. I would focus. I would visualize. And then I would execute, execute, execute.

There was structure, there was discipline, and most importantly, there were hours and hours of hard work in and out of the pool with practice time.

I would set goals. I would work towards them. I would fall short. I would miss the mark. I would get discouraged. Then I would dig in and get right back to work.

I was a competitive athlete for 16 years of my life and swam through college. When I graduated from Boston College in 2010, I may have lost the title of “student-athlete,” but that identity is still a part of me as I navigate through the world of professional hockey.

Now, I just have a title change. I am Caryn Switaj: Boston Bruins Reporter, Digital Content Specialist, and On-Camera Host.  Not bad.  I kind of like it!

I have worked for the Boston Bruins since the summer of 2012, having first interned for the organization during the second semester of my senior year at BC in 2010. I sacrificed a good amount of senior year fun to work that internship.  However, it all paid off when I was hired full-time by the Bruins two years later, after a year with the Tampa Bay Lightning and a year with USA Hockey post-graduation.

My experience as an athlete undoubtedly prepared me for my career path.

You see, on a daily basis, I am interviewing professional hockey players who are creatures of habit. These guys stick maniacally to their routines, practice their skills constantly, and consistently perform at a high level throughout the course of a season that can be eight or nine months long.

I cannot fathom what it would be like to have their talents and skills. I grew up in a hockey family in Michigan, and I can skate, but I am certainly not trying out for the women’s pro team in Boston, the Blades, anytime soon!  What I can do is somewhat empathize with them, and put myself “in their skates,” so to speak, and try to understand their frame of mind. This is what I do in order to ask insightful questions fans will be entertained and  inspired by.

In addition to interviewing the players, coaches, and personnel, I also write for the website, and manage the creation and output of the Bruins’ content across social media — Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, you name it.

Through all facets of media, we produce content surrounding all areas of the team and organization — from covering games and practices, to highlighting player personalities with behind-the-scenes content on the all-access TV show “Behind the B,” to attending community visits, and bringing in an audience of new fans through the educational children’s TV show “Bruins Academy.”

My goal is always to put myself “in the skates” of the players, “in the shoes” of whoever I’m interviewing, and “in the minds” of whoever will be consuming the content.

Towards the end of 2015, before Bruins Academy launched, my superiors gave me an incredible opportunity:  they asked me to co-host the show with Emmy Award-winning TV personality Charlie Moore.

This was something completely new and exciting. Watching the show grow and become something that kids tune into every month has been pure joy. Most of the work I do happens behind the scenes, with ideation and production. The 16th episode is due out this month on NESN, so please…check it out!

It is a challenge every month to carve out the time for everything, with content for TV shows, the Bruins’ website, and social media, but our Communications & Marketing Department tackles everything as a team.

Along with all that happens around the Bruins at home, I travel with the team on the road. Weird fact:  I was the first Bruins-employed female to travel with the team as a reporter. I visit the other 29 cities with National Hockey League teams like Anaheim, Dallas, Toronto, and Philadelphia. (BTW: Las Vegas is now home to an NHL team that will begin play in the 2017-18 season and will serve as the first major pro sports franchise ever to call Vegas home).

If I were to add up the amount of flights I’ve been on during the past five seasons, it’s north of 300. We even went to China last summer to host youth hockey clinics and to help grow the game –that’s quite a long flight. I think I’ve got an enviable amount of frequent flier miles. Too bad I don’t have time to do anything with them!

At the end of each road game, we usually fly out right away, and sometimes we get back into Boston at 3:00 or 4:00 a.m. Most days, I am back on camera again the next day, so it’s coffee, makeup, curling iron, lights, camera, action.

The road routine goes pretty much like this: breakfast, bus, pre-game skate with pre-game interviews and a game preview, lunch, work, bus, dinner, game with post-game interviews and post-game wrap, bus, plane to the next city or back home to Boston.

As with anything in life, monotony can start to creep in. There’s a comfort in routine and structure — but there’s also a complacency that can develop. I must always be challenging myself to learn more, grow more, and ask more of myself.

I often push myself to explore and “get outside of myself” — whether that’s breaking up the game-night routine by talking to fans pre-game and hearing their stories, or whether that’s getting up early on a practice day in Dallas and making sure I get outside and go for a run to clear my head.

I must also always practice gratitude.

The hours are long. Days are long. Weeks can often feel like months, and then you take a breath and a week has gone by with the blink of an eye. But you know what? Life is good. The people I’m around are grand. I don’t know exactly where this path I’m on will lead, but I’m grateful to be where I am.

While gratitude comes first, passion and persistence also keep me going, particularly on the days when my weaknesses trump my strengths.

Being on camera has made me much more aware — it has made me look in the mirror.

And here’s what I have learned:  to be exceptional at what you do, it’s not just about how you compete with others…it’s about how you compete with yourself…and get a little bit better every day.
