I think there's got to be like a Robin Hood corollary to any pro-pirating stance in that if/when you can afford to, spend the money to buy from small/local/independent art.
Some big top 100 musician/major studio whatever doesn't need your money, but the $10 on Bandcamp for the local band you saw at the bar's new album or your friend's soaps on Etsy or that indie movie playing at the cinema when it comes out on DVD or literally almost any author's book that's not like already an NYT Bestseller or community theater producing new works by living artists. It really can make a difference to those people.
#pirating#yo ho yo ho a pirate's life for me#art#people in the reblogs been pointing out that being in the NYT means jack in publishing so we giving that a strikethrough

Heads up! Wattpad Purge is happening now - check the megathread on reddit for information.
From the post, a quick summary:
What's Happening?
The past week or so, there have been reports of user's stories getting shadow-banned (delisted from rankings) and sometimes even removed. This is due to Wattpad's recent deployment of an AI-powered tool used by their support team. (Source) The tool is designed to aid Wattpad in flagging guideline-breaking content with manual reviews of the stories flagged. When a story gets flagged, it is "shadow-banned" (i.e. removed from rankings and searches) until it's been reviewed by staff.
If your story has been removed, you can contact Wattpad Support to appeal the decision.
Also important: Wattpad's "age of consent" rule has been updated. Previously, it followed the Canadian federal law of sixteen (16) years or older. On April 15th, 2024, the guidelines will be updated to reflect the new age of consent requirements of 18+.
That means for content including sexual acts between characters, both characters must be eighteen (18) or older. More tame acts (i.e. kissing, holding hands) between underage (16+ years old) characters is still fine and sex can be alluded to, but may not be described. Please review the News and Updates channel for the full text.
Also, LGBTQ+ content may be getting disproportionately targeted. (surprise, surprise) I do not publish on Wattpad nor have any connection to the platform. But I support free speech and creative works. I am also someone who was there during the Livejournal Strikethrough of '07 and know what happens in these purges. Now there is AI, which is notoriously bad at accuracy, as well as new puritans across the political spectrum who don't distinguish between art and advocacy.

There ain't nothing better than to be on a quiet lake during the early morning, watching the sun rise above the hills, and the deer come out between the trees after having woken up, and then spend the rest of the day, fishing. You can try to argue with me, but you'll be wrong. It's also just a great place to be alone.

Okay, breaking my principles hiatus again for another fanfic rant despite my profound frustration w/ Tumblr currently:
I have another post and conversation on DW about this, but while pretty much my entire dash has zero patience with the overtly contemptuous Hot Fanfic Takes, I do pretty often see takes on Fanfiction's Limitations As A Form that are phrased more gently and/or academically but which rely on the same assumptions and make the same mistakes.
IMO even the gentlest, and/or most earnest, and/or most eruditely theorized takes on fanfiction as a form still suffer from one basic problem: the formal argument does not work.
I have never once seen a take on fanfiction as a form that could provide a coherent formal definition of what fanfiction is and what it is not (formal as in "related to its form" not as in "proper" or "stuffy"). Every argument I have ever seen on the strengths/weaknesses of fanfiction as a form vs original fiction relies to some extent on this lack of clarity.
Hence the inevitable "what about Shakespeare/Ovid/Wide Sargasso Sea/modern takes on ancient religious narratives/retold fairy tales/adaptation/expanded universes/etc" responses. The assumptions and assertions about fanfiction as a form in these arguments pretty much always should apply to other things based on the defining formal qualities of fanfic in these arguments ("fanfiction is fundamentally X because it re-purposes pre-existing characters and stories rather than inventing new ones" "fanfiction is fundamentally Y because it's often serialized" etc).
Yet the framing of the argument virtually always makes it clear that the generalizations about fanfic are not being applied to Real Literature. Nor can this argument account for original fics produced within a fandom context such as AO3 that are basically indistinguishable from fanfic in every way apart from lacking a canon source.
At the end of the day, I do not think fanfic is "the way it is" because of any fundamental formal qualities—after all, it shares these qualities with vast swaths of other human literature and art over thousands of years that most people would never consider fanfic. My view is that an argument about fanfic based purely on form must also apply to "non-fanfic" works that share the formal qualities brought up in the argument (these arguments never actually apply their theories to anything other than fanfic, though).
Alternately, the formal argument could provide a definition of fanfic (a formal one, not one based on judgment of merit or morality) that excludes these other kinds of works and genres. In that case, the argument would actually apply only to fanfic (as defined). But I have never seen this happen, either.
So ultimately, I think the whole formal argument about fanfic is unsalvageably flawed in practice.
Realistically, fanfiction is not the way it is because of something fundamentally derived from writing characters/settings etc you didn't originate (or serialization as some new-fangled form, lmao). Fanfiction as a category is an intrinsically modern concept resulting largely from similarly modern concepts of intellectual property and auteurship (legally and culturally) that have been so extremely normalized in many English-language media spaces (at the least) that many people do not realize these concepts are context-dependent and not universal truths.
Fanfic does not look like it does (or exist as a discrete category at all) without specifically modern legal practices (and assumptions about law that may or may not be true, like with many authorial & corporate attempts to use the possibility of legal threats to dictate terms of engagement w/ media to fandom, the Marion Zimmer Bradley myth, etc).
Fanfic does not look like it does without the broader fandom cultures and trends around it. It does not look like it does without the massive popularity of various romance genres and some very popular SF/F. It does not look like it does without any number of other social and cultural forces that are also extremely modern in the grand scheme of things.
The formal argument is just so completely ahistorical and obliviously presentist in its assumptions about art and generally incoherent that, sure, it's nicer when people present it politely, but it's still wrong.
#this is probably my most pretentious fanfiction defense squad post but it's difficult to express in other terms#like. people talking about ao3 house style (not always by name but clearly referring to it) as a result of fanfic as a form#and not the social/cultural effect of ao3 as a fandom space#you don't get ao3 house style without ao3 itself and you don't get ao3 without strikethrough and livejournal etc#and you don't get those without authors and corporations trying to exercise control over fic based on law (often us law) & myths about law#and you don't get those without distinctly modern concepts of intellectual property and copyright#none of those things have fuck all to do with form!#anghraine rants#fanfiction#general fanwank#long post#thinking about this partly because the softer & gentler versions of fanfic discourse keep crossing my dash#and partly because i've written like 30 pages about a playwright i adore who was just not very good at 'original fiction' as we'd define it#both his major works are ... glorified rpf in our context but splendid tragedies in his#and the idea of categorizing /anything/ in that era by originality of conception rather than comedy/tragedy/etc would be buckwild#ivory tower blogging#anghraine's meta

if anyone needs a little softness post-werefic please know that:
1) wolfeliot starts out kind of prickly and dignified around the team. spending any time with them in wolf form just hanging out pretending to nap is a vulnerability and a mark of progress; accepting physical affection or accessories takes longer.
the first time, parker doesn't exactly ask. she plonks herself down beside him, doggie bandana in hand, and sophie's going "parker I don't think- that might not be-" and eliot's grumbling a little growl under his breath but, ultimately, not doing a single thing to stop her.
he looks very handsome.
2) so werequinn is incredibly tempting for so many reasons right? it feels wrong to me personally to give just one of them this to deal with, animal hangouts would be peak cuteness, @darkfinch has very much sold me on the benefits and contributed at least half of the details-
and there are, in fact, backstory possibilities that make up for the fact that this is meant to be a Rare Curse and Difficult To Handle.
but for cuteness' sake let me just say that werequinn is a very dumb big cat who he insists on treating as a seperate creature with his own shit going on. he enjoys long walks on the beach long nighttime adventures with his best buddy, biting people as a sign of affection, biting people as a sign of malice, and making a nuisance of himself when eliot's cooking.
and he answers only to Mr Paws.
#orig#werewolf eliot au#quinn#no progress on feeling out a sequel but it felt off-brand for me to drop an angst ficlet with no followup so#eliot as a wolf takes a WHILE to relax enough to allow it but absolutely ends up with clients' kids climbing over him#while he pretends to look grumpy about it#absolutely refuses the comfy dogbed hardison finds for him so hardison has to get a nice comfy rug as decor instead#wolf eliot is so very dear and near to my heart. just know that.#EDITED TO FIX STRIKETHROUGH. why does that just sometimes not work

Seven Sentence Sunday
Tagged by the ever-early @elodiah.
I'm still fiddling with a few WIPs right now and won't be online a lot of the week, so instead have the scene I cut from a recent chapter. I posted bits of it here before and eventually decided to cut it completely. Hope that's okay. 😅
--SOME HOURS LATER--
A warm hand on his brow is what wakes him however long it is later, startling him out of what feels like a remarkably painless sleep, all things considered.
He is not destined for godly or mortal paradise, and this surely cannot be Hel?
Mobius makes a vaguely surprised noise when he realizes Loki’s eyes are open. “Hey, there you are.”
His own eyes are dark-shadowed, pinched at the corners as they always are when he has a headache, but he seems much calmer than Loki remembers last seeing him. And looks utterly exhausted. His hair is sticking up everywhere, as if he’s been dragging his hands through it repeatedly.
“Are you really awake this time?”
Loki blinks for a few seconds, trying to sort through the confused muddle of his last recollection, before nodding somewhat uncertainly.
Mobius chuckles, and reaches somewhere beyond Loki’s vision, bringing back a plastic bottle of water and uncapping it. “Go slow,” he warns, slipping a hand behind Loki’s neck to assist with a better angle.
Cool and refreshing, the water is most welcome. It serves to slowly wash back what Loki now realizes must have been a very near-death experience, if his memories are accurate. The acrid bite of the cursed dagger seems to have vanished, as it should have within these walls and the cast Runes they hold; and while the wound is no longer radiating such agony as he last remembers, it is very much still in existence, that much is clear.
Even the small effort of drinking seems to sap the rest of his energy, however, and it is with great struggle that he forces his eyes open again, not willing to fall back into that darkness without first ascertaining their safety. He appears to be lying semi-sprawled on the ground, like a marionette with its strings cut. A downy pillow rests under his head, and he is covered with what feels like half a dozen coverings – but that is definitely the hard, chilled stone floor under him.
Oh. Yes, good. Mobius had understood Loki’s basically non-existent directions, and had opened a Door directly beneath them to drop them into relative safety in the Citadel. It would have been a bit of a tumble, but certainly better than remaining where they were. Loki spares a brief moment to be impressed that Mobius had figured it out quickly enough to keep him from exsanguination, but that full story will likely need to wait.
Mobius puts a hand on his shoulder, as if reading his confusion on his face. “I assume we’re safe, for now,” he reassures, calm and soothing. “And do I have a load of questions for you about this place! When you’re feeling better, anyway.”
“…Questions?”
“They can wait. You need rest.”
Loki shifts a bit against the cold floor, and immediately is informed by his own physiology of just how not healed he is. Mobius’ face twists in sympathy. “You’re doing a lot better than you were yesterday, but it’s not gonna be a fun recovery, I'm guessing. ‘Specially without magic."
“If this is a lot better,” Loki rasps, breathing heavily, “then I shudder to think of the previous state.”
Mobius worries at a little string fraying on one of the blankets. “You’re not the only one,” he finally says. “I was sure Valhalla was putting another place setting on that long table.”
Loki reaches up to place an unsteady hand on his, noting the absence of the ring which had done its job perhaps a little too well. “I’m sorry,” he whispers.
“You should be,” Mobius retorts, but he turns his hand to lace their fingers tightly. “Oldest trick in the book, and you fell right for it. Damn it, Loki.”
“Forgive me if I find it rather difficult to focus on myself when there is a lesser variant of me with a blade at your throat.” Mobius snorts, amused despite himself at the designation. Loki exhales in a pained grunt. “Might we adjourn to something softer than the floor?”
“I think so, yeah. If you can make it upright for a few seconds, I can use the momentum to get you settled. I’ll get you something to drink with sugar in it, too. Even if your magic kicks back in, it isn’t gonna fix blood loss. You really need a doctor.”
“I would like to try to heal myself first, if you’d be so kind as to assist.”
Mobius nods and gets to one knee beside what Loki now realizes is a makeshift pallet on the floor; and no wonder, since Mobius could never have gotten him up alone. The runes hidden in the walls were just enough to cancel out the curse from the blade, though it does not feel as if his magic is even close to returning. Perhaps assisting a bit with healing, but nothing more.
Brows drawn with worry, Mobius locks one hand around Loki’s and firmly grasps a bony elbow with the other hand. “Ready?” he asks.
Loki nods, braces himself with opposite hand against the floor, and clenches his jaw to prevent a shout of pain when he pushes off, hauled to his feet and kept there with remarkable strength given that it takes a moment for him to find his footing. It is only a few meters to the bed, but it might well have been light-years, for as much as he is exhausted again, limp and breathing heavily, when they finally reach it.
Mobius fusses for a few minutes with the pillows, carefully arranging them so Loki can sleep on his uninjured side instead of his back, facing the middle of the bed. A glass of some sweet-smelling fruit juice is held to Loki’s lips, and then set on the table after he drinks from it. Mobius then retrieves the blankets from the floor, arranging and rearranging them until Loki, already half-asleep again, finally drags his eyes open and catches his wrist mid-action.
“What is it? What do you need?”
“You,” Loki whispers. “I need you safe, and I need you to rest. Please.”
It is telling that he gets no argument against the latter. Mobius just nods, and then after a moment of hesitation slips off his shoes and settles somewhat awkwardly on the other half of the not-exactly-oversized bed. Loki watches through half-closed lids as he fidgets with the unfamiliar sleeves of the pajamas. Discovered prowling around, no doubt, while Loki slept. He turns up the cuffs of the simple brown top, and then unrolls them again. And again. And again.
His hands are shaking.
“Are you all right?” Loki asks.
Mobius immediately stops and then squirrels under the sheet and quilt, offering what Loki can immediately tell is a forced smile as he settles in, hands folded neatly over his chest. “Don’t you worry about me,” he says quietly.
Loki’s lips curve in a faint smile. “I have done nothing but that, these last months,” he admits. It is, perhaps, a little too honest, a little too fraught with pain, for right now. “With good reason, it would seem. I told you that you were too trusting.”
A faint snort, but Mobius seems to then relax and fall back into old bantering habits, exhaling in a gusty sigh. “Yeah, yeah. Rub it in.” He side-eyes Loki briefly, and despite the weight of these last months seems to silently agree that, and all its unspoken consequences, is a discussion for the morrow. Instead, he simply turns on his side to face Loki, watchful and silent.
Loki manages a shallow, measured exhale and inhale. Another, and then another, until the pain is bearable.
“Please tell me we’re not going to talk about things right now,” he then rasps.
A brief chuckle, even if it’s tinged with sadness. “Not unless you want to.”
“Actually, I do. But not – not until I can think clearly,” he says, a little more candid than he meant. He blinks a few times and allows the pain to settle, to become a Thing of the body, not the mind. He has had far worse, after all.
Mobius huffs what seems to be a sigh of relief. “Sounds like a plan.” He pats Loki’s shoulder and then turns to shut off the light.
Loki’s eyelids droop against his will, but he reaches out across the space, careful not to stretch too far, and settles for leaving his hand there as he loses the fight against sleep.
