fin. i know, i know. guilty as sin is coming but i just wanted to get this out. i had to come home from silverstone early cause of a mechanical dnf (foot stopped working and had heat stroke and a cold at the same time). but i had a great time while i was there and met a load of drivers with lando and alex signing my hat !!!!!

hey, gang! miss me? no? too bad, because i miss you. i think about you all the time. i hope the year has treated you well. this is, what, the third, fourth year i've done a year-in-review post? have i done more than that? it's after midnight. i can't be bothered to check. i fear a lot of the mysteries of getting older, but i will say, i don't mind that it's easier to shrug certain things off. i look back on all the times i hid from some scary fandom discourse and go, "god, why did i care?" it helps to have other things going on.

on the other hand, i guess 2024 was the year of finding out what happens when you put everything into your day job and leave nothing for the weekend. it was a wild year at work, which i assume is normal as a game ramps up to ship. i gave a lot, which was good! i'd be lying if i said it didn't take a lot out of me. important people at trade shows have now seen things i wrote! i got to work with voice actors! good news: a lot of your faves are great people! i also made, like, no progress on any of my own projects except the picrew, which i still chip away at. yes, i still draw. more on that later.

one or two people in my coworkers-turned-friends circle have broached the subject of occupational burnout and whether i've reached it yet. as i said last year, i remember what voltage burnout felt like, and it took a much weirder, angrier journey to get me there. it's kind that they're looking out for me, though. i think it's something all creative people could stand to keep an eye on. a buddy of mine even gave a GDC talk about it. it's a shame GDC is so stingy with access to its talks. at least this article has a great summary if you're interested in learning more.

there were other things, though. my mother broke her hip in june, which forced me into a caregiver role that i'm not suited to. don't worry, she's fine now. i love her, so it was important to me, but it didn't leave a lot of time to sit and write for fun. i started what i thought would be a casual fanfic project, wildly over-scoped it, and made a ton of work for myself. i outlined an original story about a difficult, personal subject and a culture i'm descended from, but not really familiar with. there's a lot of pressure to do it right, is what i'm saying. i'm taking the only path i can think of, which is to bury myself in research. the trouble is, a lot of the literature about this time and place is also very challenging, so it burns a lot of brain calories. it's a far cry from what usually gets me to start a story, which is "i want these characters to sleep together. let's see where it goes."

in a different time, i would've taken this struggle as an omen that i wasn't the right person to write this story and abandoned it. it's critical that i don't take the coward's way out this time if i'm going to honor the question i asked at the end of last year. "what is my work saying?" my mother told me the same thing a few months ago: "i think you're a good writer, you just need to find good things to say." i take that to mean i have to write closer to real experiences, which means including the parts i don't like: disappointment, loss, mistakes, uncertainty. i had all of this year to figure out how, and the evidence shows i didn't. i don't know what to say. "oh well?" maybe you can't put a deadline on these things. in the meantime, hercule and aida deserve more stories (it's an hercule and aida story), and i want more people to know about them, and maybe i can say something real through them.

this was also the year that i reckoned with the other side of "all it takes is money to make problems go away." i was able to travel, i mean really travel, for the first time. all it took was being able to throw a chunk of my salary at it. i had some shipping drama [sorry, not the romantic kind] where i had no choice but to pony up a ton of customs fees. my arm PT didn't work, so i'll have to try a specialist who's out of my insurance network and pay full price to see them. this must be what they call "being a successful adult." i thought it'd look different. i wanted to live in the city and have a hot, mysterious boyfriend. well, i can still live closer to the city if i keep saving up for that house, and maybe some hot, mysterious guy will take pity on me someday. do you think they like 32-year-olds who play video games and have flat chests? i went all the way to paris and still didn't find out. damn! 🤌

nah, i'm kidding. i mean, i'm not, but i have other things to worry about. as i mentioned above, things with my arm have taken a curious turn. after six and a half years of assuming i had tendinitis, i found out, not only is it likely not that, i may not be injured at all. the particulars of this theory get out into the weeds of neuromuscular science, so i'll only bore you with them if you want me to. the point is, if any of it holds water, it would go a long way toward explaining why none of the typical rest/heat/stretching/strengthening protocols have worked. it's actually unfathomable how much effort i've put into solving this mystery just so i can get back to drawing fictional people kissing. you can call my creative work boring or predictable or whatever you want, but never say i haven't committed to the bit.

i don't tend to read my previous years-in-review. this year, i did, because i sensed i was grappling with a lot of the same things as last year. there's nothing i hate like being repetitive. not that you would know from the way i keep writing the same three character archetypes. humor me here. i was all set to keep whining until i reminded myself how 2023 had gone, and i thought, "geez. it wasn't that bad." nobody i love died, for a start. my health is better. i have some unread books sitting around. as terrible as 2023 was, i survived it. if you're reading this, you did too.

so here's what i'm going to do. i think you should do it with me, though whether i'm in any position to give advice is up to you. i'm not going to make any predictions about whether 2025 will be bad or good. i'm just going to see what happens. deal? all right. we'll check in next year. you'd better be there!

What's one thing you wish you'd known when you were younger? that I was never going to be able to be enough for some people and accept that.

What is a course or certification you wish you'd done? Dang, I wish I had simply graduated highschool. So much shame in my life revolves around my incapacity to do that.

What's a style you wish you'd never rocked? Honestly, my fashion and general style over the years is one of the only things that I'm not embarrassed about! Hahaha I have always played with my fashion and it hasn't always worked but I had fun.

What's a style you totally killed? I was wearing thrift store grandpa cardigans with mini skirts and coloured tights back in the day. I still think it's a hella cute look.

Do you still wear it? Not together anymore.

Favorite pair of shoes you've ever owned: I bought two pairs of ballet flats, one pair green and one pair yellow, so that I could wear one colour on each foot. I still dream of those shoes.

What are heels--Jess stop saying that word: In grade 9 my friends and I would all wear kitten heels to school and clack clack clack down the halls. It was silly. lol I love heels! But while in the past I'd put up with pain to look cute, now I need the shoes to not kill me so my standards for heels have changed. Still love wearing them!

🦇 the matthew patel playlist: a song-by-song breakdown

hello matthew patel nation. how we feelin. since i'm incapable of liking this man normally, i made an in-depth playlist for him!

i've had a great time making playlists using the character playlist challenge by elijah menchaca. my choices follow the list and three rules included in the challenge: 1) one song per artist only, 2) one song per aspect/trait/relationship, and 3) eight songs minimum. i highly recommend it if you want to make in-depth and polished playlists for your favorite characters and ocs while also avoiding anything cliche.

my infodump/breakdown on this playlist (plus a Bonus playlist) can be found below the cut!

this playlist has a mix of songs that could be considered period accurate (pre-early/mid 2000s) and songs that aren't. but also we're talking about the scott pilgrim franchise so it's really not that serious.

my goal was to make a playlist that both fit his character/backstory and what i think he'd listen to, and i think i succeeded. all of my choices are based on a combo of each main depiction of matthew - in the comics, movie, and anime. this tracklist can apply to each one. this tracklist is also a combination of songs i've seen in other matthew playlists + songs i've picked out myself.

here are my choices for matthew's playlist + my reasoning:

1. their theme song: matthew patel by anamanaguchi and joseph trapanese

it's his theme song from spto! pretty self-explanatory. i love his silly lil leitmotif <3

2. how they view themselves: the ripper by the used

time takes us all so why am i not just living for today? time takes us time takes us all will i die right now? i'm only seconds away time takes us

this is one of the first songs in this playlist that has abstract lyrics. sure, matthew is not an actual mass murderer, but it's clear that he views himself in a similar edgy light. that's the kind of image he wants to portray. plus, i think the decisions he makes in canon have a reckless attitude of "fuck this, i have nothing to lose." that's what this track sounds like.

3. how they view the rest of the world: toxicity by system of a down

you, what do you own the world? how do you own disorder, disorder? now, somewhere between the sacred silence, sacred silence and sleep somewhere between the sacred silence and sleep disorder, disorder, disorder

here's another track with abstract lyrics. the lyrics of toxicity are cryptic to the point where there are probably a ton of different interpretations of what they could mean. in matthew's case, he would agree with the song's general critique of modern society, even if he might not 100% understand what's going on (both with the song and the world in general). with everything he's gone through, he's definitely wondered how he could own disorder.

4. a song about their relationship with another character: black bubblegum by the dillinger escape plan

the sound of this track fits matthew to a t, especially with greg puciato's vocal delivery. dillinger esc plan's lyrics have a similar cryptic quality to them, but the lyrics to black bubblegum are clearer compared to their other tracks. they fit matthew's relationship with and disillusion/disdain towards ramona. plus, there's the underlying yearning and obsession if you squint. it's really fun imagining matthew loving this track and getting jumpscared when he looks into the rest of dillinger's catalogue. <3

come on. i HAD to put an mcr track in this playlist. i think matthew would connect with the three cheers era the most. the edgy hopeless romantic in him definitely self-projects onto the story of the demolition lovers. i'm saying this bc i've done that too as a big mcr fan. in general, give 'em hell, kid describes how he yearns for a life larger than what he has with someone that he loves, whether that's ramona or someone else. (matthew self-shippers unite!!)

6. a song about what’s important to them: funky galileo by sure sure

and i've been feeling so pent up like an ocean in a bathtub nobody seems to understand they're calling me an evil man when all i wanna do is dance

compared to the other songs in this playlist, this feels a little more unorthodox. but i have my reasons for it. this track has an awkward funk to it, and i mean that in a good way. yes, the song is literally about galileo and is written in his perspective, but matthew definitely has the same attitude as the lyrics. sure sure describes the first verse in this way: "everybody is giving him shit for his ideas, but he figures he’ll simply keep grooving in isolation til he dies." behind all the goofy shit that matthew does, there's a desire to prove everyone wrong and keep going.

7. a song about what they hate: glass: half-empty by hail the sun

fuck this anyway do i have to learn to live craving more than i'm given? fuck it all anyway i will never be appeased i don't know what's wrong with me i will never be appeased

if hail the sun existed in 2004, matthew would love them. i think he would view their combination of math rock and emo as mindblowing. in canon, we don't get an in-depth view of his insecurities, but i think they sound exactly like this track.

look!! it's right there!! he's literally number one! von dutch gives me the same vibes as his boost in confidence after taking gideon's place in the anime, but it could also apply to his confidence in general. matthew switches between dwelling on his shortcomings and feeling like the hottest shit in the world like whiplash.

also, the people have spoken. he would listen to it. idk i just think he would love charli. real recognizes real.

10. their “origins” song: down, set, go by underoath

i'm a half-wit boy cracking a smile and wearing it all on my sleeve so cool and so poised it's true, i'm just around to see where this thing goes, i'll never know but all i know is packing bags is a remedy, is a remedy

system of a down and underoath are probably the heaviest bands that matthew has ever listened to. he hasn't gone into the deep end yet, so this is the most that he could take. the lyrics align with the naivete and angst he experienced when he dated ramona and got dumped, especially with the callout at the end repeating, "you're not here with me! you're not here with me!"

he took it pretty badly.

11. their end credits song: out in the twilight by tally hall

stone & glass, everything balancing every saint has a sin won't it last? resident present i don't even want to ask all the light is low where the time will go all i know is that i can see anything out in the twilight

according to bryan lee o'malley, none of the evil exes died. after getting defeated by scott, they each respawn back at their homes and "(learn) their lesson." we never see what this looks like. the closest thing we get to that is seeing what becomes of them in spto, and even then, that's a completely different timeline of events. either way, whether we're talking about comic/movie matthew or series matthew, he puts his past behind in some way or another. scott pilgrim has different portrayals of the gray area between what is good and evil, since no character is a saint. out in the twilight speaks to this theme while also talking about the importance of acknowledging the past and letting it go. in comparison to the other characters, matthew did not commit the worst sins at all. he has the ability to redeem himself from the immature decisions he made and learn from them. i think that no matter what iteration of the story we're talking about, matthew can get over ramona and move on with his life. we saw him do exactly that in spto.

also i just know that matthew loves tally hall. it's peak theater kid music to me.

"Game of the year," the coveted status one awards only to what video game one liked most of all the ones they played that year.

GotY 2023: Pheonotopia: Awakening. Tons of fun from start to end. Tens of hours of nonstop entertainment that kept me hooked for weeks. For comparison, most video games don't even lose my interest because they never gain it in the first place. Perhaps I should finish the video review I was making of it

GotY 2024: Dungeon Munchies. No contest. Unfortunately, the gameplay is just fine, and it is definitely not optimized for controllers. But the storytelling in this goes so much harder than anyone could possibly expect that I fell in love with it. Exactly the exhilarating mixture of farce, horror, and extreme sadness that I search for. One of those where whenever I wasn't playing it, I was chomping at the bit to get back to it

Honorable mentions for 2023 and 2024: Dead Estate and Anthology of the Killer

Dead Estate: Many hours (70!) of fun and entertainment. The final update came out this year, so it's finally complete. The new Steam thumbnail does sort of spoil the surprise that the cast of characters is larger than it first appears, though

Anthology of the Killer: This series of comedy-horror adventures has been trickling out episode by episode since 2020 but was only completed in 2024 with the final episode, "Face of the Killer." Because I've been playing each episode as it came out since 2021, I don't feel like this qualifies as my GotY 2024. Consistently clever and brilliant. Just one perfect line and memorable scene after another, for hours. Erudite, delightful, hilarious but also surprisingly haunting. I think about it often

I barely played any video games released in 2024 itself. The only ones I can recall are Felvidek, the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remake, and Psychopomp: Gold (and of course Anthology of the Killer, but since it began coming out in 2020, I do not consider it as "belonging" to 2024)

Felvidek is surprisingly difficult. The mistakes in the fake Early Modern English kept ripping me out of it so that I never got invested. I found it kind of embarrassing, and such a letdown when the graphics are so striking and the setting so unique. Maybe if I kept going it would have hooked me, but I think I'd have to start over for the challenge to be possible

PMTTYD remake has much nicer graphics than the rather ugly original, but the new OST is usually too noisy. Some of the new tracks layer it on too thick. But even so, it is PMTTYD, so it's 5/5. Something-something Vivian (the longest thing I posted online in 2024)

Psychopomp: Gold has a fantastic aesthetic, dark and pixely and grimy, but the narrative, such as it is, has little to offer, and the gameplay is also only serviceable. The story is far too concerned with "lore" to the exclusion of the characters or drama. I never cared about anything that was happening. But I can't knock that aesthetic! If you're as scared of the dark as I am, this is a very tense video game

Jungwon and you had been neighbors and best friends since childhood, sharing laughter, games, and secrets. However, when you were only seven, both of your lives changed: your parents had to move to Busan for work, and you had to leave your dear friend behind. At that time, there weren't many ways to stay in touch, and over time, you lost all contact with him.

Years passed, and although you made new friends in Busan and life went on, the memory of Jungwon was always present in your heart. When you turned 16, one day at school, your friend mentioned a survival program called I-LAND. At first, you didn't pay much attention to it, but when you saw one of the contestants, something about his face seemed familiar. It was him: Jungwon, your childhood friend. Seeing him on TV filled you with an indescribable emotion. Throughout the entire program, you supported him with all your heart, feeling proud of what he had accomplished. In the end, when his name was announced as the winner, you cried tears of joy, but also for the other contestants who didn't achieve their dream. As many would say, that show left you with some traumas.

You were so happy for him, but doubt crept in: how could you congratulate him? You knew nothing about his life, and although you remembered how close your parents were to his family, you never imagined you would have a way to contact him. However, you decided to ask your mother, and to your surprise, she still had Jungwon's mother's phone number. With your heart racing, your mom gave you the contact number.

Several minutes passed before you decided to send a message. The phone felt like it weighed a ton in your hands, and although you knew you were making an important decision, the fear of rejection or coming across as too bold was palpable. Finally, with a deep breath, you wrote a sincere message:

"Hi, Jungwon. Is it really you? It's Y/n, your neighbor when we were little. I don't know if you remember me, but I saw you on I-LAND and... wow, it made me so happy to see you there. I've been thinking about you since we were kids, and I always wondered what had become of you. Congratulations on everything you've achieved!"

With a trembling finger, you pressed send. Minutes passed, but there was no response. The fear of having embarrassed yourself started to grow stronger, and just when you thought maybe you should forget about it, your phone buzzed with a message. It was from Jungwon.

"I can't believe it! Of course, I remember you, Y/n. You were always my best friend. I remember how we used to play together and the moments we shared in the neighborhood. It's amazing to hear from you after all these years. Thank you for your message, it made me smile."

Your heart skipped a beat. It was real. He remembered you, and the excitement of reconnecting with someone so special to you was indescribable. The conversation flowed quickly, talking about your lives, how each of you had changed, and what had happened during those years of separation. Jungwon told you about his time training to become an idol, the sacrifices, and the tough moments, but also about how much he enjoyed the support he received from his family and fans.

At the end of the conversation, Jungwon wrote something that left you speechless.

"What do you think about meeting up when I return to Seoul? I'd love to catch up in person. It could be just like before, remember? The two of us, talking and having fun."

The idea of seeing Jungwon after so many years filled you with a mix of nerves and excitement. You knew the reunion would be emotional and full of nostalgia, but also full of new possibilities. After years apart, the friendship you once shared was about to be rekindled. You had been waiting for this moment without even realizing it, and now, although life had taken you down different paths, the bond that united you both felt stronger than ever.

The future was uncertain, but you finally had the chance to recover what you had lost, and this time, you knew you wouldn't let life separate you again.

hello welcome back i adore the bullshit. i have to admit that i dislike JayKori and tbh i don't like or know Kori well enough to enjoy any ship with her she just. exists outside of my periphery and isn't the sort of character i'd enjoy. so those i fear i am unable to give thoughts there BUT THE OTHERS-

JayCassTalia is !!! so good? i really like Talia and i've been getting more and more into the al Ghuls so i find that fascinating. i think the respect Talia would have for Cass could almost border on a motherly jealousy, wishing *she* had honed her child into such a perfect weapon. i think CassTalia could be such a fun sort of mother/daughter incest ship of Talia promising to take better care of Cass. and then Jason in the mix is so fun bc Talia rlly shaped Jason for who he is today and i do think she loved him. maybe she loved what she saw of Bruce in him or maybe she loved how he existed outside of Bruce. both work so well. Talia being into both of them and them both falling for the attention of an older woman? yes i love it (also i will one up you with this- JayCassTaliaNyssa. fuck with Talia and Nyssa's complex over each other)

CassRoseChesire is so good from the thought of traumatized daddy issues and all of them being raised to be weapons, not ppl. the solidarity in that combined with feeling like being the only ppl who understand what that's like? it's so good. and it also has such fun conflicts in where they all fall on moral issues. very much a "you don't have to be human around me so stop pretending" sort of throuple and man, the potential in that complex in general. i feel like they'd get cannibalism as a metaphor for love shit.

dead dove JayDonna is VERY interesting, oh my god i never would've considered dead doving Donna. i haven't read a *ton* of comics with Donna but something about Jason expecting her to be a safe person on the Titans he can go to during his very brief period on the Titans and it turns out she's not and she takes complete advantage of him is *so* fun. i like if she's maybe projecting a want for Dick onto Jason too, but she sees Jason as a Robin that she can mold into a better partner than Dick is so this is the even better choice. she gets a blank slate she can make whatever she wants and it's so easy to make him obsessed with her if you lean into the "Jason is a Wonder Woman fan" sort of thing, with her telling all sorts of stories about Diana and promising she'll introduce them someday just to keep Jason coming back around to her.

Jaytemis and Rose truly is a ship that is just "Jason Todd deserves to be torn to shreds by strong woman" and ykw, i support that agenda. i do not think he'd be able to walk half the time but i think he'd enjoy it. i personally enjoy 90s Artemis the most and i think that version of Artemis before DC softened her for Jason could be SO fun oh my god. she would not put up with his shit and would drag him around like a leashed dog. and Rose is a great third for them bc she's also absolutely unhinged and fucked up enough to want Jason on a leash. tbh i see this almost very dark in a controlling with, but that's the fun of it for me. <3

i've not read enough of WFA to know what you're referencing BUT i think CassArtemis could be fun. (tho i hate that one Outlaws comic where Artemis oneshots Cass and calls her a child bc wdym Artemis can oneshot Cass but anyway-) typically i like Artemis and Helena as far as shipping her with a Batfam woman, but there's fun in letting a strong woman look down at Cass and just decide to chuck Cass over her shoulder like a sack of potatoes. i think she'd enjoy just how strong of a fighter Cass is. freak4freak but it's sapphic and they're arguing most of the time.

Jason/Jessica is SUPER interesting. i don't know if Jason and Jessica have a ton of interactions in canon? i've not read much of Rebirth BUT i will always love sticking Jason with a Lantern. JayKyle is my personal fave but i'd love to see Jason helping Jessica out of her shell and getting her to be more confident after her trauma. they cope with trauma in very different ways so i find the idea of putting them together sort of fun to see where they'd clash and align. would he scare her? yes but that's the fun of it. fear kink core.

DA Review Series: Tevinter Nights

I've read this anthology once before, and I'm happy to say it holds up beautifully on a re-read. Since this features multiple stories, I'm going to review the whole work, and then do little reviews of each individual tale.

Title: Tevinter Nights Editors: Chris Bain, Trick Weekes, Matthew Goldman, and Christopher Morgan Year Published: 2020 In-World Year: ~9:45+ Verdict: Required reading. This is a fantastic look at the state of Thedas after Trespasser, as well as an introduction to a few of our companions and factions in Veilguard. If you only consume one piece of tie-in content leading up to release day, make it this one.

Tevinter Nights is a collection of short stories all set after the fall of Ventus. We meet Strife and Irelin, Evka Ivo and Antoine, Lucanis and Illario Dellamorte, Andarateia Cantori and Viago de Riva, Emmrich and Manfred, and Neve Gallus, among others. We also see all of our factions — Inquisition, Lords of Fortune, Veil Jumpers, Shadow Dragons, Antivan Crows, the Mourn Watch, and the Grey Wardens. This book really feels like a primer for the next game and is a ton of fun. I enjoyed my second reading as much as the first!

1. Title: Three Trees to Midnight Author: Trick Weekes Verdict: Set in the aftermath of the invasion of Ventus, this story feels like the perfect jumping off point. It picks up from the comics and introduces us to the Veil Jumpers and Arlathan Forest — a very exciting first story for longtime fans.

2. Title: Down Among the Dead Men Author: Sylvia Feketekuty Verdict: Undead murder mystery, what's not to love? Plus, we meet Emmrich and Manfred and it's absolutely adorable. And, I'll be honest, I'd do anything for Audric. This story makes the Mourn Watch seem pretty darn cool.

3. Title: The Horror of Hormak Author: John Epler Verdict: Absolute nightmare fuel. If you're worried that Veilguard isn't going to be dark enough... Read this story. A pair of Wardens are investigating a missing unit, and discover a very messed up underground lab of some sort. This story very much gave that same creeping dread as meeting the Broodmother in DAO. And if I have one fear for Veilguard, it's a Broodmother in 4k.

4. Title: Callback Author: Lukas Kristjanson Verdict: Heartbreaking. But also a really moving farewell to Skyhold. I love this story even though it kills me. In fact, I loved it enough to write some fanfic revolving around it! That's how good it is.

5. Title: Luck in the Gardens Author: Sylvia Feketekuty Verdict: This story introduces us to the Lords of Fortune faction. Hollix takes a job from none other than Dorian Pavus (and we see him with Mae!!!) to find out what's been hunting people in the docks. And it's uhhhh not anything you might expect. We see more evidence of gross, tentacled, briny-blooded monsters lurking underground. Again, things are getting real messed up in Thedas y'all.

6. Title: Hunger Author: Brianne Battye Verdict: In another throwback to Origins, werewolves are back babeyyy! This time a pair of Wardens (Evka Ivo and Antoine) are on their way back to Weisshaupt when they come across a cursed village. The pair decide to lend a hand and quickly realize they might have taken on more than they bargained for...

7. Title: Murder by Death Mages Author: Caitlin Sullivan Kelly Verdict: More Mortalitasi in this one. We get a peek at Nevarran politics, a brief glimpse of Cassandra, and more insight into the Mortalitasi. I will say, this is probably my least favorite story in the collection. While it showed Inquisition agent Sidony's power, it didn't really come together for me plot-wise.

8. Title: Streets of Minrathous Author: Brianne Battye Verdict: Helloooo Neve Gallus! This is an utterly stunning introduction to our private detective companion. A great noir-style tale that confirms that the Venatori are very much still a problem in Tevinter.

9. Title: The Wigmaker Job Author: Courtney Woods Verdict: Oh man. This is one of my favorite stories. There's just so much to love here! Lucanis and Illario are great together (I fell in love with Lucanis here and have rooted for him to be a companion since I first read it). The action sequences are great, and again, some real nasty, dark things are happening in Thedas.

10. Title: Genitivi Dies in the End Author: Lukas Kristjanson Verdict: This story is So. Much. Fun! It's also a pretty deep cut for fans, featuring Brother Ferdinand Genitivi (from DAO) and Philliam, a Bard!, as well as a few references to the Randy Dowager. All figures you'll only know if you are a lore hound in Inquisition. We also meet another Lord of Fortune and get a fun romp into elven ruins. What's not to love?

11. Title: Herold Had the Plan Author: Ryan Cormier Verdict: More Lords of Fortune, this time stealing an artifact from the Grand Tourney in Starkhaven. We also see Vaea and Ser Aaron at the end, which was a nice little treat. I will say though, this one had me a bit misty-eyed by the end. I usually want to see more of characters I love, but I hope Bharv retires to his farm and never treasure hunts again. Man has earned it.

12. Title: An Old Crow's Old Tricks Author: Arone Le Bray Verdict: After a troop of Tevinter soldiers attack a Dalish clan to make way for their camp, the Dalish seek revenge. That vengeance comes in the from of an old woman named Lessef. Watching her decimate the soldiers was gruesome good fun, and I cheered each time she said "Lessef of the Antivan Crows has fulfilled the contract."

13. Title: Eight Little Talons Author: Courtney Woods Verdict: This is the longest of the stories (I'd probably consider it a novelette) and it is maybe my favorite. I love a good whodunnit, and this one has a remote lake house, Antivan Crows, murders that replicate historically famous assassinations, AND sexual tension through the roof! We are formally introduced to Andarateia Cantori and Viago de Riva in this story, though we can infer from the text that they are the unnamed Crows we met in the comic Deception. I love them and NEED them to kiss on screen on Veilguard, okay?????

14. Title: Half Up Front Author: John Epler Verdict: It's hard to follow up Teia and Viago, but this little heist story is good fun. We see Gatt, and go to Kont-Arr! We also learn that the Agents of Fen'Harel are uhhhh real intense, Solas is after yet another artifact, and his feud with the Qunari is alive and well. We also learn that Dorian hired the narrator of this story to steal something from the Archon(?!) and at the end Gatt suggests the narrator and her girlfriend Irian head to Kirkwall to meet Varric. So, I guess we'll see if they show up in Veilguard?

15. Title: The Dread Wolf Take You Author: Trick Weekes Verdict: Look. As a Solavellan, I was never going to be normal about this story. I remember screaming (and crying) the first time I read it. It's a really interesting look at some different groups around Thedas, including the Carta, the Mortalitasi, and the Executors. We get to see Charter again, and she mentions Tessa! But the real gem here is that Solas himself shows up, and he somehow manages to break my heart all over again all while leaving me we more questions than answers. What an absolute banger of an ending for this anthology!

Interesting. What made them your favourites?

Avid's one of my video favorites because I adore the way he tells stories. He's got a good blend of clean editing and great story pacing, has consistently well-structured lore with foreshadowing that makes it possible to predict twists without it ever feeling like they've been spoiled, and also I just really like hearing him talk about the writing process on streams. That latter part is something I don't see a lot of -- usually players that are more open about their creative process don't put as much thought into MCYT as a storytelling medium, and the players with a ton of artistry and a grasp on how to make it work for them tend to be very reclusive and not really talk much about their process. (Or at the very least, I suck at being able to find that commentary.)

Leon is an incredibly talented video editor -- great at jokes, even better at tension. He's got a knack for setting things up with expert timing and whenever he dips a little into suspense or horror it works great. I know less about his process than I do Avid's, but I also don't need to know as much to see the results. Mark my words, if he decides he wants to then this guy's gonna make The Next Redstoner, and that is a high compliment.

Trog's a really cool character! I will freely admit to being biased towards them initially because woah they dont have any biney thats so poggers, but I also really do like their video presentation style and their little animations are sick as all hell. Plus, I think their character has a lot of fun places you could go in a distinctly eldritch way, and I -- eldritch and nonbinary -- think they're one of the few server admins where it's genuinely more interesting to headcanon them as having additional powers or a background in dark magic.

Fool's someone I've been following since Gilded -- ever since I caused his god and potentially even IRL good luck charm to be named after a Mistborn reference, I've pretty much been locked in lore-wise. I think I especially like his character because he manages to pull off a trope that is really tough to make work in MCYT -- I'm a sucker for a laid-back character that just does not have a fear response, and Fool really does a good job of staying calm and confident without ever totally no-selling plot developments. Super rad, and I'd love to see more of him in videos.

I grabbed Idia's hand! When I first got into TWST, I had absolutely no clue what I was getting into so I really just went based on which voice actors I recognized LOL. I know Kōki Uchiyama from a ton of different anime (JJK, Buddy Daddies, Haikyuu, BNHA, Yuri on Ice, etc.) so I just went with his character. While Idia doesn't crack the top 5 for me, I don't think I'd choose again. The only reason I would is if it impacted the story somehow but I really doubt it will. I'm COMITTED.

5. Kalim Al-Asim Explanation below the cut! (I got very excited to talk about my favorites and wrote a lot so I figured I'd condense it for people who didn't want to scroll through it all lol whoopsies.)

1. Riddle Rosehearts - I have no explanation for this?? He's pretty much the opposite of my usual favorite characters so idk what happened here. I've always been drawn to the Alice in Wonderland aesthetic so maybe that has something to do with it? He's got such great character writing, too?? Everything about his personality just makes sense when you know his backstory. When we learn that Riddle's tyrant of a mother was strict and controlling over him, the pieces just seem to fall into place. His whole life was just following her rules and studying like a good little boy, and when he stepped out of line even a little bit he was reprimanded harshly for it. Of course, he's going to the exact same thing once he's in a position of power. It's all he knows. He's just another version of his mother. Not only does he uphold the tradition of punishing rule breakers rather severely as he was when he was younger, I think there's also an element of fear there as well. Like, his mother just instilled an innate fear of breaking rules because bad things would happen if he didn't follow them exactly. I really do see Riddle as a scared little boy who is suddenly realizing that he was set up for failure by his own mother. And THEN he makes an honest effort to improve himself post-overblot?? His transformation after the fact is one of the more obvious ones and I'm just so proud of him. A THOUSAND HEAD PATS!! Okay, I'll stop rambling about him lmao I love Riddle sm (Also want to make clear I'm not saying Riddle was right for anything he did, only that I appreciate how his character was handled. Added for legal purposes so people don't come after me :c ) 2. Vil Schoenheit - This one comes as no surprise to me. Pretty boys who challenge gender stereotypes are RIGHT up my alley. Like Riddle, I think Vil has some great character writing is one of the more complex characters in the game. He just feels so compassionate to me?? I don't know how to explain it - he just gives such nurturing vibes. I'd trust this man with my drink at a bar fr fr. And then he tells Epel off for saying ballet is too "girly" for him?? Thank you TWST for bringing me this man. I pray at the altar of Vil Schoenheit. 3. Malleus Draconia - Doesn't Malleus top everyone's lists LOL I think my favoritism for the dragon man is more to do with his relationship with Yuu than anything else tbh. He's like one of three characters that actively engages with the main character and I think they've got such a fun relationship. Two people who feel very alone in the world finding friendship (or something more for you malleyuu shippers) in each other is so beautiful. I'm glad they can be there for each other like that. Side note: I adore romantic Malleyuu for sure, but I think it's equally as endearing if all of Malleus's flirtatious lines were never meant to be romantic but he's just really bad at communicating his feelings in a platonic way. Like, he doesn't mean to flirt he's just socially inept. 4. Ruggie Bucchi - Gremlin hyena boy is just too good for words. Ngl, I started off not really liking Ruggie all that much because of what he did in the Savanaclaw book. My mans was basically shoving people down flights of stairs?? I'm not really sure where the turn around happened tbh. Mischievous personality types do tend to draw me in in fiction so that probably has a lot to do with it. I also felt really bad for him at the end of the Savanaclaw book when Leona was ready to Thanos him out of existence despite everything Ruggie had done for him (and continues to do for him). I appreciate his work ethic, I can respect the hustle, and he's got such a cute little laugh. I wanna pet those big ole ears of his. Leona - pay this man more smh 5. Kalim Al-Asim - SUNSHINE BOY!!

He's such a breath of fresh air in this game LMAO. As much as I love the fact that most of the cast are unapologetically flawed, it's nice to have a few characters that are genuinely good people. His VA (Kazuki Furuta) absolutely kills it imo. I can hear his laugh in my head as I'm typing this - it's just so warm and happy :D He also breaks the sterotype of most rich characters in media by just being a nice person? He's not evil or greedy (although naive and entitled) and he just wants to be bffs with Jamil. Break his heart Jamil and we're gonna have WORDS. Also just like FORGAVE JAMIL??? His bfffl yeeted him across the desert, brainwashed him and admitted to wanting to get him kicked from the school and Kalim didn't really hold it against him. He was so understanding and sweet about everything AHHHHH

WHEN I TELL YOU. I RUSHED TO READ THAT FIC. I GOT SO SO EXCITED I'VE BEEN STARVING FOR FOOD FOR JAKINNIERS FOR LIKE TWO YEARS AND IT'S FINALLY HAPPENED!!!!! i seriousluy feel like im going to have a meltdown im so excited i've written several things of my own on these three i just never really finish things or get them to a point where i feel good enough to publish them? i have tons of things hidden away but one day maybe they'll be finished one i was working on was some sort of fun and whimsical lawyer-esque au? where the BSAA was actually a law firm located in raccoon city and were in the middle of a long lawsuit on albert wesker/tricell for medical malpractice/unethical practices or something akin to that. and chris had taken a few people from his team on a vacation in LA to keep spirits up and have some fun, and there finn and piers (being pretty close in the firm, at that point) would get lost and meet jake, a (currently) LA 'resident' thug who knew the streets pretty well and helped them get around. i still like the concept and i've been thinking of returning but jojo brainworms are overtaking me so it's been rough to do anything resident evil related (but i may return for a short while just to get some jakinniers shit out cuz i miss them) actual rambling under the cut v

but like as for in actuality, aka the string of events ive actually procured; in of course an everyone-lives au, i imagine finn to be the one to get jake and piers to set their differences aside and bring the three of them together, in a sense. piers and finn weren't super close before the ambush in edonia, though piers still cared for finn marginally as he would any other soldier. it wasn't until they were both in recovery in a BSAA-owned lab for rehabilitating bioweapons that they actually became close with one another. they're both in there until about 2014, thanks to jake's blood being the key to manufacturing some kind of "cure", or at least something to satiate or cut off the effects of the c-virus. finn has a lot longer to go than piers - seeing as he was hit with a more crude, destructive version of the virus - but they're both stable, and that's what matters. they attend the 2014 rewards ceremony for their bravery in edonia. finn doesn't see jake there-- sherry says he didn't want to go, didn't want to make the trip, which is.. fair enough. he's still upset for a reason piers cannot understand. but in 2015, chris holds a christmas party, which is something he likes to do often. by now, piers and finn are in some sort of weird situationship that finn wants to put a name to, but piers won't budge, unwilling to admit his fear of commitment to something like a relationship. regardless they attend this party together and, lo and behold, that ginger fuck shows up. piers is greatly upset, wondering how the hell he'd be allowed when he literally shot the host of the party in 2012, but chris actually seems okay with it, so he can push aside his anger for now and let it go, just wanting to get this social event over with, aaand great finn is going to literally talk to him. amazing finn actually just wants to thank jake for what he's done, and jake is like, reasonably a bit awkward and confused, having had his cute little character arc where he's like not a bad person now, but somehow the conversation turns and they hit it off. hooray! that's how that happens. now within a few weeks finn is juggling two odd situationships at once and loves both of them but can't exactly just admit that because that would mean "choosing", or at least that's how he sees it this is getting a bit long so im going to try and speed-explain: jake pops into finn's place at some point to give him something, piers is there. cue awkwardness and tension. something snaps, piers goes off, is very upset to see jake is hanging around piers's boyfriend-not-boyfriend-technical-situationship-thingy, they talk things out after an almost-argument and discover they actually aren't too different. relationships between the three of them develop over a few months, but nothing official because nobody is really sure how to go about this, then on a semi-drunken night jake is like "what if we were just all together at once i hate monogamy" and?? they just slowly start calling each other their boyfriend. of course they don't come out to anyone for a while (but everyone has known lmao) happily ever after huzzah! that's such a quick explanation of something that in my mind is so intricate i don't really know how else to squash that down while still keeping key points. there's so much to it and i imagine it'd be a VERY slow burn that all of them get frustrated about at points (especially finn, being the most eager to actually jump into an official title of their weird relationship, but the other two being a lot more on the fence about it) you just have to trust me might go into this more and if you have any specific questions i would LOVE TO ANSWER. i love talking about them very much and all the different aus/ideas i have in my head

totally get this !! i've literally heard so many people torn over what house to be in because there's a weird pressure to pick your own. i think it'd work well either way !! there's forsurely an angle where you're the hufflepuff they "adopt," and your more hufflepuff-like qualities (work ethic, loyalty) offset them in a really necessary way. it gets boring if a friend group is an echo chamber and everyone is just extremely similar with a shared mindset on EVERYTHING, so i think it'd be really beneficial for everyone to have a dynamic where there's someone in the mix who's totally different from them. they could learn a lottttttt from having a hufflepuff around imo LMAO. but i totally get the common room hangout and dorm sharing thing, so if you wanna be close to them you'd make a terrific slytherin too. don't put too much pressure on yourself !! you're gonna have tons of fun either way

ugh i appreciate you sm if you had any idea how extensive the family history section of my script is ( i'm talking scripting every member of my linage and what they were known for going back like 86 generations ) you'd know it's almost more trouble than it's worth ( almost ) LMAO. i think having a group of things that are important to you, family and legacy wise, is really important and helpful for coming up with what sort of family you wanna script. going into scripting my family, i knew i wanted 1. a vibe similar to the Addams family—gothic and disturbingly scary but extremely loving, 2. intelligence and wealth LMAO, 3. that i wanted to be a dragon animagus and i wanted it to connect with my bloodline to make sense, since there aren't any other dragon animagi shown in Harry Potter, and 4. that i wanted my family to be connected to the Greek witch Circe in some way

those things all cobbled together and grew from there !! i'd say pick out a few things that are key to you and let the ideas flow. for example, if you like roses, you could script that your family is known for their historically massive rose gardens, and that your family is responsible for the production of all of the rosewater/rose petal products in the wizarding world. all of you smell like roses and your estate is surrounded by a massive garden that inadvertently serves as a gate, because of all the thorns. this is literally the most random idea of all time, but i’m just trying to say that the teensy-tiniest details can move outwards into these massive all-encompassing ideas. the things that are most important to you about your appearance, your style, your interests, your magic, your leisure activities and your family dynamics can all culminate into a really realistic and comprehensive family lineage if you pick them out. the important part is not bounding your creativity !! let it flow, even if the ideas seem random or silly, it's my firm belief that you can script anything into being both realistic and exciting/interesting. i know i rambled but i hope you get what i'm saying !!

as for your age going to school, i wouldn't be worried about it. i totally scripted that Hogwarts is a university because even though i'm 19 i am NOT missing out on the shenanigans

12. How many WIP’s do you have in your docs for next year?

Ohhh this one is a little bit difficult to say? Specifically for Trigun since that's what almost all of my writing has been for, both Demon AU and the Vashwood Roleswap AU aren't going to be complete before year-end, so that's at least two. I have two more completed but unedited/unposted fics ready to go for Ladies Week so far, with one more I'm currently working on in the drafting stage and four more planned (whether they all get written in time is another story). I'm also planning at least one fic for sapphic week. In terms of other things I've already started and hope to start posting next year, I've also got the Castle in the Sky AU, the timeloop fics/series, more SWAP AU, and the little lumberjack/dryad au one-shot. In terms of things I haven't started and hope to work on next year, the Mecha AU and the Garden of Sinners AU are the two ones I'd really like to work on and start posting!

So, to summarize, the count for things I've started for next year is nine WIPs, and that jumps to sixteen if you count the things I haven't started but hope to finish and post. Hopefully I can do a little more than that, too, given that only gets me a third of the way through my ideas list and I'm sure I'll have more ideas rolling in.

17. Your favorite character to write this year?

...Very much Vash lol. I also love Wolfwood, Meryl, and Milly a whole lot, but I relate to a lot of Vash's personal struggles and find him cathartic and comforting to write. He's also just a pretty complex character, so it feels like there are always other layers to him to explore via writing.

29. Favorite line/passage you wrote this year?

Oh, this one is hard... I've written so much... Hmmmm, well, Chapter 31 of Demon AU was actually written in 2023, even if it was only posted in 2024... I think part of what makes this hard is that I'm the kind of person that's more enamored with scenarios and characters than specific lines or writing styles, so I don't fuss too much over word choice as long as it's functional to get the mood and whatever else I need conveyed. That being said, maybe it's the recency bias, but (Spoilers for the Vashwood Roleswap AU)--

Maybe he’d lost, but he’d forever deny Knives of the one true thing he wanted—affirmation that what he was doing was right, that he was a righteous protector instead of a ruthless, cruel tyrant. That his actions, born of fear that only served to inflict their pain onto others, were just. Vash loved Knives. Vash loved Rem. Vash loved humanity.  So he’d never give up on them. He’d never forget Rem. He’d never betray humanity. And he’d never stop defying Knives, so long as he clung to fear and refused to change. Because…  Well, call him naive, but a part of him still thought Knives might change. 

I think it just encapsulates my feelings on the relationship between Vash and Knives pretty well. Things are just... Messy, and complex, but no matter what Knives does, Vash is never going to just roll over for him, not anymore. And I love him for that.
