sam definitely drank demon blood and killed lilith for revenge. the whole apocalypse thing and him thinking that he’s the only one who can stop it did stroke his ego (this is not a criticism in any way) and reaffirm that what he was doing was right and for the greater good but those were just excuses and justifications. ultimately it was about sam’s shame and guilt at being unable to save dean (from the deal and from hell) and his suicidality, apart from his need for revenge, but as the season progresses and dean comes back, the shame and guilt is still there. and so is the grief. yeah, dean came back, but that doesn’t change the fact that he died. that sam lost him, and was powerless to stop it. dean being brought back does not cancel out his grief or his trauma. he was forever changed by that, and that change didn’t just reverse itself.

and that translates to this single-minded need for revenge, for compensation. to actually do something with all that rage.

and the thing is. sam has spent his whole life scared of being othered, of being corrupt and bad and impure. of being a monster. of being unhuman and inhuman. but the second he loses dean, none of that matters anymore. it’s not that he doesn’t care. but it doesn’t matter. it’s worth it. if it means killing the demon that took dean, dragged him to hell, away from sam.

he’s willing to drink demon blood, to replicate that first violation, all those years ago and to keep doing that, even though he knows it’s changing him and not for the better, even though so many people keep warning him. even though he knows it’s the furthest thing from what dean would want. what he himself wanted. but he cannot let go of the trauma of that night. when dean dies something (everything) essential in sam died with him, and it didn’t come back when dean did.

it’s just. dean’s death was a crack to sam’s core, it broke his soul, and nothing was the same after that. ruby and the blood gave him purpose, promise. better to die after killing lilith than to die drunk and out of his mind.

and he was doing it for himself, even if he told himself he was doing it for dean. and at some point he started even believing it.

but the point of this whole post is that. he was doing it for himself. he was doing it for (because of) dean. he genuinely believed he was doing it for dean. he was becoming what he hated for dean. he was corrupting himself for dean. the destruction of oneself as an act of devotion. i ruin my self for you, only you. i become the monster under your bed to keep you safe. i go against my god because i love him too much (oh hey, lucifer parallel).

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT????
