As y'all know, BTS is celebrating their 10 year anniversary this year! Crazy that they've been together for 10 years...even longer if you consider the time before their offical debut. Sometimes it seems like 10 years is not that long of a time cause we just love them SO much. So it got me thinking about other similar groups/bands and how long they were together in comparison to BTS.

The Beatles: I included the Beatles because I have seen BTS compared to them in terms of their influence on the music industry and their popularity. They initially formed in 1958 and slowly built their fanbase by playing gigs in England from 1960-1963. By 1964 we saw "Beatlemania" in full force. For 10 years they dominated the music scene until they broke up in 1970. At this point and began to pursue solo careers. Over the years they have had many partial reunions.

New Kids on The Block: They formed in 1984 and were active until 1994. Then came back in 2008. They were the first modern era "boy band" to achieve such a high level of success.

Back Street Boys: They formed in 1993 and released a greatest hits album in 2001 before taking a 2 year hiatus. After that time they came back together for reunions multiple times. Some of them enoyed moderate success as solo artists over the years but never the level of success they had as a group. In 2023 they celebrated their 30 year anniversary.

N'Sync: They formed in 1995 and last released new material in 2002 before going on hiatus. I'm sure we all know who the break out solo artist of the band was... a one Mr. Justin Timberlake. He stills continues to have massive success to this day, even moving into acting.

One Direction: they formed in 2010 and were together until 2016. Many of the band members have had successful solo careers. Hands down the most successful member is none other than Mr. Harry Styles. Much like Justin Timberlake, his star continues to rise!

So BTS has been around the same time or longer than some of these other groups. I think one of the big differences is that they really have given us unprecedented access into their lives. SM has made all of that possible. I think that's why so many of us have come to love them even more... we just know so much more about them. And the crazy thing is, for as much as we do know; there is still so much we don't know. I think over time, especially after MS, they will open up a bit more to us. I am looking forward to those days!!!!!

How I got into Kpop

Just to give you some background, I was 14 years old when I got into kpop. I spent most of my free time watching movies and shows (anime included), listening to music, and drawing when I wasn’t in school or doing homework. I should also mention, I was raised Catholic and my family is Republican, so I didn’t know what sex was nor knew of the LGBTQ+ community. I just thought humans were humans and we each got to live and love the way we wanted to (man was that bubble popped with a huge dose of reality once I learned more about America and the way life is). It’s safe to say that discovering Yaoi and BL changed my life. I started consuming all things gay and it became an obsession. I also eventually realized I’m bisexual. But, anywhooo.

One day in 2015, I was watching an edited Yaoi video on YouTube that had a really catchy song playing, and I was curious about what it was. I ended up finding the title of the song in the comment section and found out, it’s Mr.Simple by Super Junior. I gave it a listen, and I liked it. The song opened me to the world of K-pop which I never knew existed. 

I started listening to a few other songs by Super Junior and I got curious if I’d like other groups’ music. The second group I listened to was Monsta X. Specifically, the song Hero. If you haven’t given it a listen, please do. The entire song is a core memory for me at this point. In the recommended section, what jumped out to me was War of Hormone by BTS. Now, my dirty mind was intrigued. So naturally, I watched the M/V and lyric video and enjoyed it. 

I wanted to explore their music, so I looked at the recommended list and I saw Dope appear. I gave it a listen and loved it! I loved the rap and the combination of singing. It all just flowed well together. I decided to check out other songs, but figured I wouldn’t start truly learning their names till I listened to a new album. Sure enough, Youth was released and I gave Burning Up (Fire) a listen and I officially said I’m in this shit for the rest of my damn life. Now, BTS has had their 10th anniversary and I’ve been apart of ARMY for roughly 8 years. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed their hiatus and getting to hear each members’ individual sound. Time certainly flies by, and I’m excited to see what’s next for them.

Outside of BTS, I started exploring other artists gradually and got into NCT127, KARD, Twice, Red Velvet, EXO, Jessi, TXT, New Jeans, Aespa, ATEEZ, and Stray Kids. If you have any other song recommendations, comment below! I want to keep exploring new artists. Thanks!

FESTA 2023 continues

Lots of debut photos on my timeline so I decided to go back and watch their debut showcase including their first interview. They were thinking big even then, with plans to make their musical mark and pick up awards. RM and Suga the main spokesmen for the group.

The Behinds video is also really revealing. JHope was looking after the maknae line even then. Jin seemed much more sensitive than perhaps we see in later content. This is before he has fully developed and adopted his protective Jin of BTS persona. The differences in their personalities is also much more evident. It really is miraculous that they melded into such a relatively harmonious group.

We'll get a chance to dig deeper into their history very soon. The first adverts for Beyond the Story came out today. Soon my copy will be winging it's way to me from the good ole US of A. My BTS merch display will soon overflow its allotted space.

I feel like one of those provincial fans on the Pixid video. Just watched it again and remembered how their sincerity moved Jimin to tears.

I doubt that it will be a no holds barred expose but I am hoping there will be some new insights to enjoy.

Finally, what is this f**kery? Spotify obviously have no clue about BTS and ARMY. Choosing 10 songs would at least be a bit more representative but trying to choose a Top 5 from their catalogue is heinous and unnecessary torture. Not happening!

10 years. 10 YEARS. That’s actually insane. BTS has been by my side my entire adult life. 10 years ago I was 18, in school, stressing about the next assignment or test. Wondering whether or not I would make it in this highly competitive field. Now I’m 28, a professional engineer, home-owner and cat-mom to 3 lovely babies. Throughout these years their music, concerts, and content have served as a source of inspiration and comfort. They gave me something to relate to, something to look forward to, something to rely on. And I’ll always be grateful for that. But BTS also lead me to meet some of the most amazing people, to travel the world, and to make memories that will last a lifetime. I’ve grown with them and because of them. And that, is something that will stick with me forever. Thank you for 10 years BTS! And here’s to 10 more ❤
