my used copy of the incredible hulk novelization by peter david arrived in the mail today and i have spent the better part of two hours devouring its contents. and this line (from the reunion scene where bruce agrees to come with betty) hit me so hard i physically recoiled and had to read it twice over to be sure i’d seen it correctly.

“She guided him to the car as if she were leading a blind man. That might not have been entirely wrong, because for three years he had been wandering in darkness, like a boat adrift with no bearings, and Betty was his lighthouse.”

this encapsulates so much about them in so few words. this is what’s been boggling me about the mcu’s depiction (or lack thereof) of their relationship. she’s so important to him which is why i will never understand why they had him choose to leave her and then never told us where she was all this time until so much later. never showed us that she was looking for him, or that he would even talk about her to anyone. tried to pair him up with natasha and then abandoned that so fast.

there’s also this earlier line in the same scene:

“Very softly, she said, “You were never out of my life.” And he knew what she meant, because she had never been out of his, although thousands of miles had separated them.”

can you feel the soulmateism. even samson knew it instantly because he says that bruce may as well have been in the bed beside betty, figuratively or literally, because of how much of a place he still holds in her life and in her heart.

so why couldn’t they have stayed like that? why did they try to make it look like they didn’t matter this much to each other when they do?

New chapter (or the second half of a monster of a chapter) in breakable heaven, my Bretty soulmates AU.

I'm using NaNoWriMo to motivate myself to write, and shockingly, it's working?

everybody stop and imagine this for a second because i had this thought the other day and it is killing me.

imagine that betty didn’t just disappear after the incredible hulk. she and bruce get back together and she’s there throughout all the rest of the films. (samson is supportive; he knows when betty’s made up her mind.) that kind of stability is new for bruce, but he wouldn’t trade it for anything. no natasha romance. hulk doesn’t disappear to sakaar for two years because he still has her. leaving would hurt betty and he’s done that before, he won’t do it again. they stay out of the civil war conflict for the most part — but betty would have some words for ross.

and then the snap happens. even through that, betty stays. miraculously, she and bruce are both survivors. and though that traumatizes both of them, though the guilt weighs on them, they still have each other. in the five years after, they decide to finally tie the knot and get married. they move into a cabin that once belonged to betty’s mother. (her father had abandoned it a long time ago; it fell into disrepair and needed to be fixed up before they could officially make it theirs.)

before the time heist, bruce is… scared, honestly. scared that something will inevitably go wrong and that he will lose this peace he has managed to find for himself. betty holds him close and tells him that she knows she can’t keep him away; he’s too selfless for that. bruce says that maybe they deserve to be a little selfish, but there’s that quirk to his mouth as he says it that tells her he knows she’s right. so she smiles and tells him to just come back to her. and he does. he always comes back to her, after all.

Bruce Banner: “Okay-! Exhale. He made his decisions. You’ll make yours, and they are going to be great. And if they’re not I’ll be sure to scatter your ashes in a much nicer parking lot.”
