Bell & Ross s’est inspiré ici d’un Radiocompas (Radio Compass) embarqué, entre-autre, dans les USAF “Jet Fighter & Jet Bomber” c’est un instrument utilisé comme aide à la navigation (plus d’info sur Wikipedia) dont ils ont gardé les caractéristiques graphiques afin de proposer un affichage de l’heure original avec un design et un code couleur qui permettent de facilement lire l’heure.

Un affichage à deux niveaux

La BR03-92 BI-COMPASS est conçue sur deux niveaux, les minutes sont en beige à l’extérieur et les heures en vert sur le cadran central. La lecture des heures est indiquée par un triangle vert qui apparaît au centre au moyen d’un disque concentrique indépendant, non-gradué. La typographie utilisée pour les chiffres est identique à celle des compteurs analogiques d’aviation (Isonorm)

Bleu-vert : Le vert Munsell qui indique les heures et la couche photoluminescente (Superluminova®) dont elle est couverte, contraste avec le noir du cadran, pour garantir une lisibilité optimale de jour comme de nuit.

Blanc cassé : Les aiguilles et les chiffres « coquille d’oeuf » du cadran donnent les minutes et les secondes, tout en rappelant les principes de lisibilité des outils aéronautiques professionnels. Ce code couleur était couramment utilisé sur les instruments, notamment dans les avions de la marine américaine.

La finition en céramique noir mat du boîtier s’inspire de la couleur des tableaux de bord, pour que le cadran soit plus facile à lire en éliminant les reflets.

Pour réaliser ce défi technique, il a fallu créer un disque ultra-léger pour garantir que ni la réserve de marche ni la précision de la montre ne soient réduites. De plus, ce disque doit être suffisamment résistant pour ne pas se déformer avec une planéité parfaite afin d’éviter tout risque de frictions. Un réglage au micron près garantit que le disque reste constamment parallèle lors de sa rotation.

La BR03-92 BI-COMPASS est étanche jusqu’à 100m et est est animée par le calibre BR-CAL.302 avec fonctions heures, minutes, secondes et date (calendrier entre 4 et 5h).

In a quest to create the ideal utilitarian watch, Bell & Ross broke traditional watchmaking codes in 2005 with the simple idea of turning a plane’s cockpit into a wristwatch. More than an original concept, the Instruments collection is not only reminiscent of the world of aviation but is immediately recognizable.

Pushing further its exploration of aeronautical navigation instruments, Bell & Ross has since developed other unique and high-tech models such as the BR01 RADAR, BR01 ALTIMETER and the BR01 CLIMB to name a few. The result was a collection of exclusive watches with innovative displays.

True to its philosophy, Bell & Ross introduces a new version inspired by analogue instrumentation of aircraft cockpits, where each instrument is a reference point in terms of precision, legibility, reliability and performance: the BR03-92 BI-COMPASS. With this watch, Bell & Ross recreates the graphic style of these navigation tools as close as possible, offering an alternative to the traditional approach of telling the time.

  DESIGN THAT ENHANCES LEGIBILITY

Bell & Ross designers have borrowed the graphic characteristics of navigation tools to create an original and extremely legible display of time. The result is a design and colour code that allows the time to be read quickly and accurately.

The simplicity of the BR03-92 BI-COMPASS’s design encases the complexity of its inner workings. Built on a two-tier basis, the dial divides its main centre part with the outer part – where the minute track is featured – through a small “step” equipped with a minute-circle. To enhance legibility, the hour and minute graduations have been separated to promote the minutes on the main dial – as in original instruments – while the hours are displayed in the centre.

The hour reading is indicated by a green triangle marker which appears in the centre through an independent concentric disc which is not graduated.

The technical challenge posed by its design and construction required the best watchmaking expertise: An ultra-light disc needed to be created to ensure that the power reserve nor the accuracy of the watch was not reduced. Furthermore, the disc needs to be sufficiently resistant so as to not become deformed or risk any friction.

This dual challenge has required the development of specific materials and new techniques.

As it rotates, an adjustment to the nearest micron ensures that the disc is constantly parallel. The accuracy of the assembly requires all the know-how of master watchmakers.

The typography used for the numerals is identical to that on analogue aviation counters (Isonorm).

2 Colours SERVING UTILITY

The use of colour is important in aviation for the coding of signals, hence the need to set adequate colour requirements to ensure that the flight crew can recognize information at a glance.

Blue-green:

The Munsell green hue indicates the hours and is covered in a photoluminescent coating (Superluminova®) that contrasts with the black of the dial, ensuring they can be easily read both during the day and at night.

Off-white:

The “coquille d’oeuf” hands and numerals on the dial unveil the minutes and seconds and echoes the legibility principles of professional aeronautical instruments. This colour scheme was commonly used on instruments, specifically on US Navy aircrafts.

The anti-glare, black matte ceramic finish of the case is inspired by the colour of an instrumentation panel, designed to make the dial easier to read by eliminating glare.

The new BR03-92 BI-COMPASS will make its owner feel as though they own a fragment of an aircraft’s cockpit, delighting both aviation fans and watch collectors.

Five Timepieces to Look For at Baselworld 2019

Baselworld, the annual watch-industry trade fair in Basel, Switzerland, has seen headier times. The brands of industry giant Swatch Group, along with a host of others, have opted out of this year’s fair, continuing a trend that’s seen the number of exhibiting watchmakers dwindle by more than half since 2017 and the exhibition space drastically reduced. Baselworld, however, remains a rite of spring for retailers, media, and influencers worldwide who ply their trade in the horological world, especially because many of the event’s tentpoles—including Rolex, Patek Philippe, Bulgari, and TAG Heuer—remain.

Hundreds of important new timepieces will make their worldwide debut, continuing a tradition that stretches back to the first Schweizer Mustermesse Basel in 1917. Many of these timepieces, of course, are shrouded in secrecy until their unveiling during the week of March 21-26, but here are a handful of notables we’ve had a chance to see thus far.

Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Bi-Compass

Bell & Ross takes its hallmark aviation-dashboard aesthetic to a new height with the BR 03-92 Bi-Compass, whose design is based on that of a vintage radio compass. It will be a piece you buy for its striking looks: The dial is arranged as three concentric circles, the innermost a rotating hour disk with a triangular pointer coated with sea-foam-colored luminous paint. The pointer indicates the hour on the Arabic numerals and indexes that occupy the middle zone, also treated with blue-green lume. The outer circle, elevated from the others by a steep rehaut, features numerals and indexes for the minutes, indicated by a central minute hand; both the hand and indexes have a contrasting cream-colored luminous treatment. The BR 03-92 Bi-Compass is housed in a 42-millimeter matte black ceramic case and powered by a Sellita movement.

Bulgari Gérald Genta 50th Anniversary

What does one do for an encore after giving the world such icons as the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Patek Philippe Nautilus? Legendary watch designer Gérald Genta started his own eponymous brand, with its own distinctive design language, in 1969. His atelier was later absorbed into its eventual owner, watch and jewelry powerhouse Bulgari, and its technical and aesthetic savoir-faire contributed to the evolution of the Bulgari watch portfolio. This year, Bulgari pays tribute to Genta, who died in 2011, with a special platinum-cased edition, the Gérald Genta 50th Anniversary watch. Here, a blue lacquered dial displays a jumping hour numeral in a round window at 12 o’clock, and the minutes and date on two retrograde hands. This is a timekeeping configuration that was emblematic of pre-Bulgari Gérald Genta watches. Powered by the self-winding BVL caliber, the watch features the classical Genta brand logo on the dial.

Grand Seiko Elegance Collection

Once Japan’s best-kept horological secret, Grand Seiko continues to win over enthusiasts worldwide since it entered the U.S. market. For 2019 the watchmaker has introduced a manual-winding movement made entirely in-house, placing it inside four new models in its dressy Elegance collection. Caliber 9S63 powers a simple two-handed time display balanced by a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock and a power-reserve indicator at 3 o’clock. It ticks inside a slimmer, 39mm case hand-finished with Seiko’s Zaratsu polishing, a technique that yields sharp, mirrorlike surfaces. Japanese artisanship is also on display on two of the four dials, finished in the centuries-old urushi lacquer process, in which sap from a specific Japanese tree is applied layer by layer to the dial.

Breitling Premier Bentley Centenary Limited Edition

Breitling and Bentley have maintained a partnership since 2003—it’s the longest-running such watchmaker-carmaker collaboration—and the relationship continues in 2019, not coincidentally the 100th anniversary year for Bentley Motors. The Premier Bentley Centenary Edition accompanies the rollout of the new Continental GT Number 9. Offered in a 200-piece edition in rose gold and a 1,000-piece series in steel, the watch sports a handsome brown elm burl dial reminiscent of the wood inserts on the car’s dashboard, with contrasting black chronograph subdials and a racing-inspired tachymeter scale. A special Bentley-branded plaque, designed like those found on historical dashboards, identifies the watch on its left-hand side, while the brown leather strap has a stitched pattern reminiscent of Bentley car seats. Powering the watch is Breitling’s self-winding in-house caliber B01.

Zenith Pilot Type 20 Extra Special Silver

While Zenith’s biggest news of 2019 is the 50th anniversary of its groundbreaking El Primero chronograph models, the brand is not neglecting its historically inspired Pilot Type 20 collection. It’s launching the first of the military aviation-inspired watch in a case made of silver, a precious metal found only rarely in the watch world. Its dial continues the theme, with a shiny, silvered finish punctuated by rivets that call to mind the fuselage of a vintage warplane, and its solid silver case back features a period-appropriate engraving of the Zenith Flight Instruments logo. Inside beats Zenith’s in-house Elite caliber, a non-chrono version of the El Primero movement. Price:$7,700
