Kartik didn't actually play Manjulika mostly, it was a stunt double named Pia Soni, who was the faceless dancer in the intro, and then the masked manjulika. She also claims to have done the climax tandav to the Sonu Nigam song, and in her comments under her reels says that Kartik's face was added using vfx.

That means he just did the dance as Debu in the green dress during the flashback and just at the end while attaining moksha apparently

Idk why this made me so sad like I got really attached and impacted by a mainstream actor playing a transwoman's role or a feminine role and they couldn't even care to have him do the full thing! Couldn't he have trained in classical dance and done it himself? He's trained hard for his other movies like Chandu champion so why was this done like this?

I mean I hope this lady is not telling the truth fully because I don't wanna believe he didn't do like 90% of it, especially the dance as the ghost

Hey! Sorry we took a while to answer this, but you raised many important points that we (the mods) had to discuss and come up with an answer that covered everything we wanted to say.

So, first of all, we agree with your main point! It would have been much nicer if Kartik Aaryan had learned and performed the dance himself. This movie is far from perfect at representing various identities, not just trans. You would have noticed this yourself, but bollywood has a track record of being bad with representation and the movie itself does other reps very wrong. To name just a couple, overall Bengali rep (randomly using Bengali words and sounds intermixed with Hindi) and using bits of Hukkus Phukkus (a Kashmiri song) out of cultural context. It's not a movie where the makers put a lot of thought into any of the identities they represented!

So then, how do we at the kaqcuille look at this movie? When we interact which SKTKS or BB3, we do it not because either are 'good rep' but its because we find potential for exploration in their stories and character arcs. We've adopted them because we want them and their queer identities treated right in a way that appeals to real queer people (us).

It is understandable if you feel betrayed by the double's IG post when Debu's dance was such an important point in your gender journey. That frustration is understandable, it would have held so much more meaning had KA did it himself. That being said, doubles and small time actors rarely get recognition for the work they put in and a part of us is ok if the double gets due credit for a standard industry job that she did in a mainstream movie!

We also understand having high expectations of KA as an actor because of the work he puts in in his dance numbers and movies in general. But we recently found out that for dance sequences in SKTKS where his abs show, KA was starved and dehydrated for hours and that left a bad taste in all our mouths. We had to take a moment before we could go back to appreciating the work he put in for SKTKS. It is valid to have high expectation of actors and we wish doubles and extras were unionized and getting due credit for all they do and what actors are expected of by current movie standards didn't come at the cost of exploitation. But we must remember when we interact with Bollywood's content, that there is an underlying exploitative, capitalist industry and we are going to see intersection of a myriad of issues when mainstream Bollywood chooses an identity or storyline for its character(s).

We understand and agree with your main points and hope this answer provides some more dimensions to think about as you wade through this 💜

Hi again Sarah! My Indian films rec list just got super long cos of all the tropes and summaries so I'm making it into a proper post I can tag you in!

While I do that, here are my top five faves from both Bollywood and Kollywood (Tamil films) respectively:

Bollywood:

- Dhoom 2 (2006); I'm actually rewatching this right now and it's a SUPER fun, campy heist movie with a great soundtrack! The whole trilogy of movies are great but this one is my fave and they can all be watched as standalones

- 3 Idiots (2009); a modern classic that most people have heard of if they are casual fans of Bollywood. It takes place in an engineering college and has a super compelling plot I can't give away too much of

- Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008); It's a love story of an arranged marriage between a shy guy and this outgoing girl who kind of hates how quiet and introverted he is. And she thinks he expects her to be a traditional Indian wife so she kind of is sad abt being married. Then she goes to take dance lessons and in an attempt to connect with his wife, he goes to the lessons in disguise as a confident guy and they fall in love!

- A Bonus Rec: If you liked Aamir Khan (the lead actor in 3 Idiots) and Anushka Sharma (the lead actress of Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi), they did a really adorable sci-fi movie called PK (2014) about an alien called PK who crashes into India and befriends a human lady. It's just such love letter to humanity and I LOVED Anushka's character back storyline in that movie, it changed my life ahahha

- Teri Meri Kahaani (2012); Heads up this does star Priyanka Chopra but before she became a Hollywood weirdo 😭 and back when she was super talented!! It also stars this really cute actor called Shahid Kapoor. These two play different characters in three different timelines and it explores the concept of soulmates and Hindu reincarnation!! Again CHANGED MY LIFE!

- Ram Leela (2013) or the longer title is Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela. It's basically a hotter and older M18 version of Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending if I remember correctly! It starts Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh who fell in love on set (they were friends before that) and started dating just before the movie came out! They are now happily married 🥰

Gen z will make them famous. I'm seeing nostalgic music. So they may make nostalgic music like it was in the 90s and 00s golden era of bollywood. They'll be independent artists. I'm not sure who, but they are currently not in the scene rn. People from bollywood and bollywood celebs would be jealous of their fan base. As they will make good music far away from the trashy sh*t bollywood makes. People in the industry would be surprised as how come someone be that mainstream and famous without any connections.

Yes, this will probably happen in 2027 smh. When genz grows up a bit more. I'm seeing this artist will grow organically and will have a cult fanbase internationally. People will connect to this person. I'm reminded of "Jordan" from rockstar.

This person will be very mysterious and unique. Their genre can be hiphop or rock. Something that elevates people. Other than being infamous for music, their love life would be talked about too. This person may suffer from heartbreak or toxic relationships in love and their music will show it. They make relatable music. Very emotional, sensitive and mysterious person. No one would know much about them but people's eyes would be on them 24/7. I'm seeing them being attractive physically too. Another reason why people like them so much. Gina hey, your reddit thread anon made me wanna write this since I've had a very recent epiphany regarding reddit.

But again I realised none of it could be true and I would not know. Cause where the entry barrier is not present, people be saying anything and its all heresay. And there's a reason why heresay is not considered a legit evidence in court. So everything needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

And lets be real, harry is the no. 1 male artist if he wouldn't have absolute bs blinds written about him, who would?

"he'll be heartbroken then," glenn says. "he was so bummed in the morning when he realized you had left. drove all the hotel staff crazy asking them if they were sure the guy leaving his room didn't leave a name or number behind. placed a couple of calls to the club's manager too, i believe. looked ready to cry when nothing came of it."

"that's because he doesn't know who i really am!" vk whisper screams. "if he knew, he would never have flirted with me, or fucked me, or be put out i had left!"

"come on just give it a try," glenn persists. "just tell him you were the guy he slept with yesterday. what's the worse that could happen?"

"he could vomit?" vk suggests snarkily. "he could die of shock?"

true to his word, that evening, vk returns to the club in the same disguise. pat is there too, in the hopes that the guy from yesterday will be there again, and he's not disappointed. eyes lighting up, he sidles towards vk. "look who's here," he whispers, his breath hot against vk's neck, making him shiver. "i never got your name, yesterday. playing hard to get, are we?"

vk looks up at him, eyes glinting, smile teasing, slipping easily into the role of a coquette. "maybe..." he trails off, his fingers circling the rim of his glass. "buy me another drink and you can have my name."

pat obliges immediately. vk intended to tell pat his real name and remove his disguise, after the drink, in a dramatic moment reminiscent of a bollywood movie, but his courage deserts him at the last moment. if he told pat who he really was, then the other would be disgusted, he's sure of that.

"nikhil," he blurts out, the drink burning his throat on its way down. "that's my name. but you can call me nick." his cheeks burn as the lie slips out.

then pat and vk get talking more about each other, vk lying about his profession and where he works in the process 🤣 tells him he's an engineer or something like that 🤣 they get to talking about cricket and pat asks vk/nick who his favourite player is. "im indian, so of course, virat," vk/nick replies, waiting with bated breath for pat's reaction.

pat wrinkles his nose and grimaces. "oh i hate that guy," he says with venom. "bloody good batter, but he runs his mouth far too much."

vk giggles nervously, whatever wish he had remaining to come clean about his identity to pat deserting him upon hearing those fateful words.
