so I'm off work today because my flatmate has COVID which means I'm exposed
so far I'm testing negative, but it's highly likely I'll catch it since we live in close proximity and you can spread COVID prior to being symptomatic
(BMA has a good paper on this subject here as well)
generally people tend to be most likely to transmit COVID 48 hours prior to symptomatic expression and for around 5 days after symptoms develop, although that's just an average estimated range -- you should be careful regardless of what day of infection someone might be on
around 1 in every 5 people infected with COVID goes on to develop Long COVID, so I want everyone to keep being safe out there because you do not want this shit if you can possibly avoid it.
while research is ongoing, there's a lot of evidence that repeated infections may increase likelihood of developing Long COVID, so don't roll the dice on this one and stay safe out there.
at the moment there seems to be a late summer surge in COVID cases (at least in the USA and UK), but due to a massive reduction in testing and reporting on local/national levels, exact numbers cannot be obtained -- the WHO has noted this problem in their weekly reports.

if you test positive on a lateral flow test, try to confirm the result via PCR test. in the UK, if you test positive, notify your GP or NHS 111. the current NHS guidance can be found here.

EILMELDUNG: BitMEX steht einer weiteren Klage gegenüber

BitMEX zählt den wohl bekanntesten Derivateplattformen in der Kryptowelt, allerdings nicht nur, weil es von dieser Plattform immer nur Gutes zu hören gibt. Eigentlich sind es gerade die negativen Dinge, die die Börse sehr bekannt gemacht haben.
BitMEX erneut vor Gericht
Wieder einmal hat BitMEX in einem weiteren Rechtsstreit gelandet. Das kalifornische US-Bezirksgericht hat am Samstag eine Klage gegen Unternehmen und Einzelpersonen eingereicht, die mit der Derivateplattform in Verbindung stehen. Dazu gehört auch die Muttergesellschaft HDR Global Trading Limited sowie die Mitgründer Arthur Hayes, Ben Delo und Samuel Reed. Sowohl Hayes als auch Reed fungieren als CEO bzw. CTO von BitMEX.Bei dem Kläger handelt es sich um eine wenig bekannte BMA LLC, die BitMEX und ihre Betreiber beschuldigt, eine Vielzahl illegaler Aktivitäten zu ermöglichen, darunter betrügerische Geschäftsbeziehungen, Überweisungsbetrug, Geldwäsche, illegale Spendenaktionen, Manipulationen und so weiter. In der Klage wird auch behauptet, dass BitMEX seine risikoreichen Handelsdienstleistungen illegal US-Bürgern anbietet. Es wurde bekannt, dass die Plattform im Jahr 2019 fast 15 Prozent ihres Handelsvolumens aus den US-Regionen meldete. Dies entspricht einem Handelsvolumen rund 138 Milliarden US-Dollar, das BitMEX ohne einer gültigen Geldtransferlizenz in den USA durchgeführt hat. “Nach eigenen Angaben der Beklagten hat das nicht lizenzierte Geldtransfergeschäft der Beklagten zugegebenermaßen täglich durchschnittlich 3 Milliarden US-Dollar an illegalen und nicht lizenzierten Geldtransfers verarbeitet.” Die Klage von BMA befasst sich zusätzlich mit den BitMEX-Handelsfazilitäten mit hohem Verschuldungsgrad, mit denen Händler Wetten bis zum 100-fachen ihres ursprünglichen Kapitals platzieren können. Laut dem Kläger verwendet die Plattform den BXBT-Indexpreis für hochliquide Derivate, der die Preise von zwei oder drei illiquiden Spotbörsen übernimmt. Das betrügerische System ermöglicht es Manipulatoren und Geldwäschern, die Erkennung zu überspringen. So sei es unbegrenzt möglich, ein Handelskonten ohne Überprüfung und ohne Auszahlungs- und Einzahlungslimits zu eröffnen. Durch einen uneingeschränkten Zugriff ist es Möglich, dass BitMEX-System zu überlasten, wodurch manche Aufträge angenommen werden und manche nicht. "Dies verursacht die meisten Liquidationen, die BitMEX zu einem exquisiten" Designer "-Tool für unappetitliche Akteure machen, um Kryptowährungsmärkte zu manipulieren." Schon im april 2018 wurde BitMEX Insiderhandel vorgeworfen. Alle Angeklagten hatten zugestimmt, dass die Börse ihren gewinnorientierten Trading-Desk über ihren Mitarbeiter Nick Andrianov betreibt. Die Counter-Track verfolgt die bestehenden Handelspositionen, Stop-Loss-Aufträge, Liquidationspriese und offenen Aufträge der Kunden. Diese Strategie verschafft BitMEX einen sehr unfairen Handelsvorteil gegenüber kleinen Einzelhändlern, was meist zu massiven Verlusten führt. In den letzten sechs Monaten hat BitMEX auch aus diesen Gründen gut die Hälfte seines Marktanteils verloren. Am schlimmsten was es zu sehen, als der Bitcoin-Preis über Nacht um mehr als 50 Prozent gefallen war und BitMEX von einem “technischen Problem” gesprochen hat. Immer noch läuft eine frühere Klage von Investoren, bei der es um 540 Millionen US-Dollar geht. Excerpt from BMA Update 2013 - Gain and Kenya
STOP PRESS – After UPDATE went to Press GAIN told us that Danone is no longer a member because it is a Code violator.
The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition is an especially worriesome entity.
On the Lead Group of SUN (the Scaling Up Nutrition Initiative – see page 24) it is in a key position to influence SUN policy development. GAIN often presents a benign image as a non-profit NGO that is only interested in reducing malnutrition through local foods and small companies. However, those of us who are involved in advocating stricter marketing controls see a different side.
For example:
• Lobbying at Codex
For the last 3 years we have witnessed GAIN’s lobby against World Health Assembly Resolutions atCodex Alimentarius meetings where global food standards are set.
GAIN is clearly trying to open up markets for fortified foods and supplements for its Business Alliance members such as Danone (see note above), Pepsico, Coca Cola, Brittania. Some of the members are pictured left. (See page 26.)
• Lobbying Kenya
In October, GAIN challenged the Kenya’s draft law that proposed strict controls on baby formulas and foods. In its lobby paper GAIN implied that proceeding with the law would threaten “Kenya’s ability to meet its commitments as a Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) country.” We have asked how SUN can claim to be government-led when a member of its Lead Group is doing such lobbying. Kenya went ahead with the Law. (See page 15.)
• World Health Assembly
GAIN has been involved in WHO’s work on micronutrients and in 2012 applied for official NGO relations status. This would allow it to make interventions at Assembly meetings. The WHO Executive Board in January 2013 did not approve the application, pending answers to questions about GAIN’s relations with global corporations and allegations about its lobbying against WHA Resolutions on baby foods.

• Monitoring
The first report of the GAIN sponsored Access to Nutrition Index (ATNI) was published in March 2013. The report scored 25 of the world’s largest food and beverage manufacturers on the basis of their written policies and statements, rather than on independent monitoring of their actions on the ground.
The highest scores went to the companies that have invested most in using Public Relations strategies to counter criticisms. Danone, Unilever, Nestle, PepsiCo and Kraft reaped the reward as media reports described them as the “best large firms worldwide when it comes to offering products that address both the problems of obesity and poor nutrition…” (USA Today).
ATNI criteria are the perfect whitewash because they reward companies for all the wrong things: the promotion of fortified foods, consumer ‘education’ about healthy diets and active lifestyle, and engagement with ‘stakeholders’ in public private partnerships.
• Lack of transparency
The British Medical Journal wrote to Veena Rao about her opinion piece entitled, “Law on infant foods inhibits the marketing of complementary foods for infants, furthering undernutrition in India”
In this online Personal View ..Veena Rao, did not declare any competing interests. She has now told us that she has been “a member of the Advisory Board on the Britannia Nutrition Foundation (a non-profit trust) since 2009.”
Brittania Industries is represented on the Lead Group of SUN and the Board of GAIN. Its stated purpose is to “Help people enjoy life –through healthy snacking.” Encouraging all day snacking on ‘slightly better for you’ junk foods seems to be one of the food industry’s Top Strategic Priorities.
