❝ ... i know you are. ❞ thank god for his scarf, as grusha doesn't want them to see how hard he's biting his tongue — with his siblings grown &&. off on their own, it's almost easy for him to forget that not everyone is perfect at everything their first try. besides, while some of the snotty kids he deals with on a daily basis deserve to be chewed out, ree certainly doesn't — he can tell that they're being earnest. after a moment of awkward silence, he reaches up to pull down the scarf a bit to scratch at his chin. ❝ but if you really wanna see one of the great sights of paldea before the sun sets, you've gotta pick up the pace at least a little bit. come on, i've got you. ❞

‘TOL AND SMOL’ PROMPTS [ accepting ]
The mountains were cold. And even though she'd managed to acclimate somewhat since she moved to Paldea, there was no getting over the fact that she was originally from Hoenn where it never snowed. The cold she faced in Hoenn winters were nothing compared to Glaseado Mountain.
Grusha was currently in the process of making her some hot chocolate to warm her up after she'd spent the last couple hours training with her Pokemon. She truly could not deny Baxcalibur the opportunity to run around in the snow when he started whining pitifully.
While she was waiting she noticed that he'd left behind his fluffy overcoat. Feeling a little desperate, she snatched it up and pulled it around her shoulders while she blew into her hands to warm them up faster.
Tumblr media
She'd only planned to wear it for a moment but he was already back with a couple of mugs before she really felt a difference. Oops. Hopefully he wouldn't be too upset.

Retired Leaders AU Info Masterpost
Figured I'd compile basic info about this AU into one big post.
----
THE BASICS:
It's a "Good Uncle" kind of AU, where Belos is a better person. He actually tried to unite the realms, because he believed it would be beneficial for both, but it was doomed from the start and went horribly wrong. He has publicly admitted to and apologized for his wrongdoings and resigned from his position, and the Coven System was abolished. His family occupied leadership positions within his Coven and also left those roles behind, hence the AU's title.
I refer to the family as the Wolf Fam. It consists of Belos, Steven, Hunter and Kiki, along with their palismen. They all live together in a newly built house.
--
THE CHARACTERS:
This isn't a list of all characters that exist, just the Wolf Fam and a handful of others, mostly OCs.
Belos Wittebane (he/him; mid 410s): Former Lord of the Boiling Isles; now a palisman carver; husband of Steven.
Steven Bellamy (he/him; 53 y/o): Husband of Belos; former Head of the Lord's Coven; now a P.E. teacher at Hexside.
Hunter Wittebane (he/him; 17 y/o): Nephew of Belos, raised by him and Steven; former Golden Guard; now mainly focused on pursuing his interest in engineering and tech.
Kikimora Volk (she/her; mid 20s): A sort of adopted daughter to Belos and Steven and adopted sister to Hunter; former Secretary; now works at a history museum.
Crescent (they/them): A floating snow leopard palisman belonging to Belos.
Ash (he/him, they/them): A dark gray wolf palisman belonging to Steven.
Waffles (she/her, they/them): A winged red wolf palisman belonging to Hunter.
Grusha (she/her): A spotted hyena palisman belonging to Kiki.
Jasper Tholomule (he/him; 44 y/o): Younger half-brother of Steven; father of Matt; husband of Cass.
Cassidy "Cass" Tholomule (they/them, she/her; 44 y/o): Spouse of Jasper; stepparent of Matt.
Matthew "Matt" Tholomule (he/him; 13 y/o): Biological son of Jasper and stepson of Cass; nephew of Steven.
Leslie Bellamy (she/her; 80s): Mother of Steven and Jasper; grandmother of Matt; wife of Opal.
Opal Bellamy (she/her; 80s): Wife of Leslie; stepmother of Steven and biological mother of Jasper; grandmother of Matt.
Ren Kanemaru (they/them; 53 y/o): Steven's childhood friend; former scout.
Valerie "Val" Durand (she/her; 54 y/o): Best friend of Steven and Ren, who they met after joining the Lord's Coven; former scout.
Petra Barany (she/her; mid 20s): Best friend and former assistant of Kiki.
That's about enough I think, I won't be including the rest here. One thing to note is that the Collector doesn't exist in this version.
And you may have also noticed that "Steve" is a little different. I created this version back when we only had one scene with Steve and had no idea he was going to get a face reveal and more canon info, and I just chose not to change the name after that happened. So Steve technically exists, but it's not canon Steve. They do have some similarities though.
--
THE STORY:
Back in the 1600s, Philip did not kill Caleb, and reluctantly gave the Boiling Isles a chance. Though resisting it at every turn, he ultimately fell in love with it. He developed the belief that uniting the two realms would be beneficial for both, combining the less dangerous climate of Earth with the more open and progressive culture of the Isles. After Caleb died in an accident during the search for one of the ingredients for the portal door, Philip only became more committed to the idea.
He began to do extensive research into magic, digging for as much information as he could find, which included looking into lost and forbidden magic. The latter is how he discovered both Grimwalkers and a way to extend one's life by consuming palismen. As he formed a coherent plan for how to enact his goal, he began trying out his messaging on small groups of witches to see what works, as well as testing out Coven sigils on the earliest ones until they worked as intended. He also took the name Belos and began to wear a mask.
Slightly over 50 years ago he took power as the Lord of the Boiling Isles, becoming the chief religious figure and a sort of constitutional monarch, with his fourth Grimwalker nephew, Anthony, by his side as the Golden Guard. There was an elected government responsible for things like deciding on budgets and passing legislation unrelated to the Coven System, however Belos had ultimate authority and could override any decision. He largely stayed out of their affairs unless he thought what they were doing would undermine his ultimate goal.
However, his plan to unite the realms was doomed from the start. When he attempted to do it on the Day of Unity, it went horribly wrong and shattered his hopes. The Unification Spell didn't work and was simply draining people of magic. It ended abruptly once Belos's staff, through which the spell was channeled, exploded. He, Hunter and the Hexsquad barely escaped the blast by leaving through the portal door. They ended up stuck in the Human Realm for a time, before finding the same way back as they did in canon.
Belos publicly admitted that he had lied about speaking to the Titan, and that the plan to unite the realms was his own doomed idea. He apologized and resigned, with Steven, Hunter and Kiki following him. The Coven System was abolished, and the Isles became more of an actual democracy, without a single individual with ultimate authority being able to override the decisions of the elected government, which also became more transparent.
Belos helped with restoration efforts where damage had been caused on the Day of Unity, and he later took up palisman carving and caring for palismen in general to make up for consuming them to extend his own life. He also released many palismen souls that were previously trapped inside him, and is now aging at a more regular pace. Though some remain, in part because they have fused with his curse - he was cursed long ago, in a similar way to Eda, and his curse is a wolfcat. Both conditions have physically affected him, giving him scars, catlike pupils, sharp fangs, ability to purr, and making him much bigger than he was originally.
--
EXTRA:
spirituality on the Isles
Belos didn't invent a religion from scratch, but rather built on and expanded - or, to put it more harshly, exploited - already existing spiritual beliefs related to the Titan in order to achieve his goal of uniting the realms.
Before Belos, the Titan was rarely (if ever) viewed as a higher authority who, through messengers, gave witches rules to live by. He was mainly seen and respected as the origin of the Isles and all life on it. People thanked him for their existence, their magic, their harvests, etc. and payed tribute to him, but that was largely it. The prevalence of spirituality/religion has gone down over time.
Belos's rise to power with the claim of him being "the Titan's messenger" caused a resurgence of spirituality/religiosity, with him being seen as the authority on the matter by his followers. It has declined again once it was revealed that he hadn't actually spoken to the Titan.
glyphs
They were in frequent use by ancient witches, in part due to them having weaker natural magic and having to rely more on magical tools than modern witches. Over time, they fell out of common use and were limited to specific spiritual/religious rituals, and then only became more rare over time.
Disabled witches who had weak or no natural magic would simply rely on their staffs, due to which they wouldn't rediscover glyphs out of necessity. On top of that, when knowledge of glyphs was still more common, it may have been taboo to use them for non-spiritual/religious purposes.
Covens
There have been a number of different Coven systems throughout history. Some Covens were based around familial ties, some were based around what kinds of magic people specialized in, some were simply regional, etc. Though sigils had not been used before, and it was possible to move between Covens, with the level of difficulty depending on the type of Covens in question. Whether it was legal to be Covenless may have varied as well, with it being illegal in some places at some points in time. When Belos rose to power, he chose to use the specialization-based model of Covens to sort people into.
With Belos's system gone, the concept of Covens wasn't completely abandoned, but rather became non-official and based on voluntary participation, as opposed to a legally mandated system that also restricted what types of magic people could use.
the structure of Belos's government
As mentioned previously, it was a sort of constitutional monarchy. Belos was the Lord of the Boiling Isles, it's main religious figure and ultimate authority, but there was an elected government, responsible for things like budgets and passing legislation. Belos could override any decision they made.
The Head Witches of the main nine Covens were originally appointed by Belos alone, but after Terra turned out to be a disastrous choice and had to be pushed out, he handed the appointment process over to the elected government, and would now simply confirm or deny their appointments. Those officials could be bribed, though, to appoint someone who shouldn't necessarily hold a position of power, like Adrian. Belos tried to keep an eye on such issues - or more so tasked others with doing so, but some still slipped through.
The Lord's Coven was a separate branch of government, entirely under Belos's control, though he tended to be somewhat reclusive, so day-to-day coordination and such was largely handled by other high-ranking members of the Coven.
The top leadership originally consisted of three positions: the Lord (Belos), the Secretary (first Winston, later Kiki) and the Golden Guard (first Anthony, later Hunter). The third position was later split into two, the Golden Guard and the Head of the Lord's Coven (first Lilith, later Steven), with the latter taking on some of the former's responsibilities, which allowed Belos to keep Hunter in the castle more for his safety.
The Lord's Coven was the Isles' military, and they performed other tasks and missions for Belos as well, such as finding abandoned palismen for him to consume as "medicine" - something he agreed was unfortunate, and claimed he was looking for an alternative to - and searching for Titan's Blood. Regular law enforcement was typically done by members of other Covens, though some scouts, mostly newer ones, could get the assignment. Usually, experienced scouts were only brought in for emergencies, or to deal with particularly powerful criminals.
the basilisks
The basilisks were not tortured and were generally treated better than in canon, but they were made to do things they didn't like, and were still kept in captivity, in part out of concern that they'd start attacking people if released out in the wild, and they were unhappy with their lives, so they still escaped.
The basilisk that attacked the schools in season 1 had always had behavior problems, possibly a combination of being the earliest and thus least correctly created, as well as being mishandled by those responsible for their care. They have since been treated, and are no longer dangerous.
Vee had complicated feelings about Belos, but was not terrified of him when she saw him in the Human Realm, especially once he made it clear he had no intention of forcing her to return to captivity.

ok. assorted grusha hcs because i have a lot
cis guy, bi but leans pretty hard on attraction to men
his full name is Grusha Morozov; he's the eldest brother to two siblings, who are around the 15-20 range (he's like 25ish)
his grandma knitted him his signature scarf before he traveled to paldea on his own! initially he found it silly but after years from home he's wearing it almost constantly
has the Scariest spice tolerance. he may not be able to handle hot weather but he can eat the spiciest fuckin dishes without blinking
he is disabled after the accident and deals with chronic pain especially to his left leg -- on bad pain days he uses a cane
very very secretly has a sweet tooth. like hell will he ever let anyone see him indulge. he's too cool to like sweets
doesn't live in the gym, or in Montenevera, but in a cozy wood cabin that's a little far from Both places. fuck being close to civilization
a lot stronger than he looks. he used to be a whole athlete. i Know his big goofy puffy jacket is concealing some muscle. i know it in my heart
and assorted hcs about his pokemon!
his full team (though a few don't battle) include: Frosmoth, Beartic, Cetitan, Weavile, Altaria, Cetoddle, Snom, and Alolan Vulpix/Ninetales
nearly all of his pokemon assist him in some way after his accident. frosmoth is good at sensing weather and incoming storms early, beartic and cetitan carry him about (beartic usually indoors and cetitan outdoors) when he's struggling to walk, altaria provides a fuzzy cushion for him to fall on if he loses balance, and cetoddle is just really cute and cheers up basically anybody
cetoddle joined his team when he happened upon it one day, separated from its pod and terribly sick. he didn't intend to keep it, but once it was nursed back to full health, it was inseparable from him
snom was also not an intended party member. it kept following him home because it thought he was a giant snom. spikey jacket and all.
his weavile is a Jackass, the embodiment of every bastard cat in one pokemon, but i swear he doesn't dislike grusha. he's just fiercely independent and does whatever he wants
his altaria is unbothered by the cold, despite having 4x ice weakness, because she has the Cloud Nine ability

Looking for some Oc interactions for these two 💔💔 they both are very friendly ❤️. I also have other ocs from other regions too if ya don’t got SV ocs💅 idk private message or reply here?? Idk how tumblr works exactly 😭
-Some basic info-
Anna is the older sister of the Gym Leader, Grusha. A former professional figure skater, she now enjoys retirement and is often seen watching her younger brother's gym battles. She speaks fondly of Grusha and, much to his embarrassment, refers to him as being her "baby brother."
Vera is a student at Blueberry Academy and despite their focus on Pokémon battles, she has shown to be average in said talent. Her focus is more towards researching and she is an assistant to Briar. She is a big fan of Gordie and often asks her cousin, Allister, for his autographs or to buy merchandise exclusive to Galar.
My other ocs are down there in my toyhouse ❤️

Afterthoughts about the main story of Pokémon Scarlet (spoilers obviously):
At various points in the game I felt that things had been half-assed, probably due to time crunch and insufficient staffing, like the lack of fun NPC interactions, poor town planning and shopping options. The plot which culminates in “The Way Home,” however, my word, they whole-assed that. This was my best experience yet in terms of feeling like I got to be in the anime, either the climax of a season or one of the movies, and that was super cool and satisfying.
I know now why I love Arven so much, he’s a blend of the grumpy but caring big brother (eg Piers) and the traumatised character you are there to help heal through your journey together (eg Lillie). I like this SO much better than a rivals plotline where you’re supposed to crush some other kid’s dreams to achieve yours (eg Hau, Hop). They even addressed this with Nemona, the most conventional rival, by having Paldea’s Pokémon League structured differently so that Champion is a rank multiple people can hold at the same time. You don’t have to knock Nemona off her perch to succeed and she’s just absolutely thrilled to have you rise to join her.
Is Penny so sarcastic and unpleasant because she was bullied and it’s made her defensive, or did people take against her because she’s sarcastic and unpleasant? No kid deserves to be bullied but some kids are disliked for a reason. Anyway Penny, you have cool hair and a cosy hoodie but you’re coming off as a bit of a dick, maybe work on that.
Nemona, you are one of nature’s sunbeams and if I shook you I would hear your brain cell rattling around like a bead. I loved it when Koraidon was nervous and she petted its nose.
The dynamic in the crater of everyone wanting to claim me as their BFF was pretty amusing. For the record, Arven is my bestie (we shared a life-changing field trip after all), I like Nemona very much and I am taking care of Penny because Clavell asked me to.
The team-getting-to-know-each-other dialogue text as we moved down through the crater went by a bit too quickly and without pausing to let me press A when I was ready to advance, which was strange.
Also strange was the apparent last-minute attempt to give Nemona some backstory. She’s… posh. Well shit, I’ve seen her house, I could have told you that - and it has no bearing on what she wants or how she behaves at all. Not even “I want to earn my own achievements and not be treated differently based on my family’s status.”
While I thought that the storyline about Arven and his parent (mother in Scarlet, father in Violet) was really good emotional stuff, I was struck by how - well, S/V are interesting with regards to gender. There’s been a deliberate if flawed attempt to make the player character customisation gender-neutral (but in the “unisex means everyone wears boys’ clothes” way rather than providing a skirt version of the uniforms that anyone could wear - at least they didn’t limit the hairstyles) and there are characters who are distinctly unconventional in their gender presentation - Rika with her dapper butch style, Grusha who many people mistook at first sight for a pretty girl, Mr Saguaro in general (although he seems a bit more like the incongruous comedy option). You can also see the two professors option as an effort at balance, but it has the side effect that while both characters are neglectful parents to Arven, a neglectful mother tends to be perceived more harshly than a neglectful father, particularly if she prioritises a high-powered career over her child. I may have missed something but I caught only a glancing reference to who Arven’s other parent might be and Arven makes no reference to feeling let down by that person. Thus, playing Scarlet, I sometimes felt a bit uncomfortable about the impression a child who only played Scarlet and didn’t know about Violet would be getting.
It’s interesting to look at Sada alongside Lusamine. We get a much clearer impression in S/M that Lusamine is narcissistic - that she’s built up this idea of how great she is being so loving and caring to all those rescued Pokémon, and she thinks of her love as this fabulous blessing and gift, rather than something Lillie and Gladion should be able to expect. (I won’t say “take for granted” because children should appreciate their parents’ love and care, but not with a sense of obligation or unworthiness for it.) Sada doesn’t really have the same kind of dialogue getting that point across, although you can infer she’s a similar kind of person. I appreciated the exchange between AI Sada and Arven when she speaks to him apparently from the real Sada’s memories and emotions, and apologises and Arven says that she can’t just say something like that now. It doesn’t really make things better for him and it would take more time and effort than a few loving words, however sincere, to make the necessary difference.
Of course, then she almost immediately peaces out to go back to the Stone Age rather than stick around to try to make it up to him. (Complicated, to be sure, by the fact she isn’t his actual mother, she’s a robot who’s kind of trashed and riddled with weird crystals and frankly probably won’t survive long where she’s going, but still, she chooses to leave him.)
I was a bit saddened by the fact that part of Arven’s acceptance of what happened seems to be a belief that it was understandable for his mother to be more interested in a time machine than in him. No it wasn’t! You’re a good boy! Evidently his little buddy is going to have to stick close and encourage him to think better of himself. And maybe we can go on an Adventour with Peony, I think that would really cheer him up.
Also, unbelievably awful that Sada or Turo made him responsible for Koraidon or Miraidon when he was just a kid, gave him no help to look after a Pokémon no one alive has any experience with, and made him feel like it was his fault when he lost control of the situation. What bloody useless parents. No wonder Arven resents Koraidon or Miraidon, and it’s a sign of his good character that despite feeling that way he’s still basically kind to it.
Anyway, I’m glad we healed his dog.
And all that said, “the Professor is the Big Bad” was a really fun twist and also kind of economical character-wise. Chairman Rose was an absolute dud of a Big Bad, particularly after a batshit powerhouse like Lusamine, so I was pleased to see he was an anomaly rather than typical for the games going forward.

XX21 - Grusha is stabbed by Geeta’s Ceruledge, forcing him into silence and into a ‘caged bird’ status.
XX21 - Unova Arc II occurs. Leon takes on the Unova League challenge, asking Ashe to go with him as his guide and she does so. The two by the end of the journey are smitten with one another. Kianga decides to travel the world with Reshiram leaving Morgan to further her Therapy Program.
XX21 - A Umbreon begins to bug Morgan on occasion. This Umbreon is revealed to be Joseph Valkyrie, a Winged Umbreon Demon during the holidays. Leon officially asks Ashe to become his girlfriend and she accepts. Ruko is found and taken in as the the third sibling of Grandcrest Ranch.
XX22 - Joseph begins to court Morgan. Leon begins to court Ashe.
XX22 - Time Travel shenanigans happen and somehow Ashe ends up in Hisui and the Hisui Arc occurs. What is several months to Ashe is only a week to her family and when she returns she is traumatized, but not before bringing a whole horde of Hisui Variants back with her. Ashe’s Absol is able to be saved by Donovan who is now Sorcerer Supreme of the current timeline.
XX22 - Kianga fully embraces both sides of himself as a result and becomes the Pack Leader. He also meets another Zoroark Hybrid named Juno and his family. Hisui Zorua and Zoroark join Kianga’s pack.
XX22 - Alola Arc II occurs. Leon takes on the Alola League challenge with Ashe as his guide and through this journey, Ashe is able to heal from the trauma Hisui caused. Totally insane dream I had
I was with Hop from pokemon. I was Grusha, also from pokemon.(I'm not always myself in my dreams. That's fun.) We were hanging out after we met and became friends. Leon was nearby, of course. Hop took me somewhere and we both jump off a high place to our deaths. Except it was a high dive in a water park. Neither of us expected it would be deadly. We thought "certainly, they height-tested the thing to be safe." but nope. On the way down, I realized we weren't going to make it and I hugged him tightly. Then we both "woke up" in a beautiful place made of marble. Angels and stuff were around and we were facing judgement. Hop got to enter Heaven while I was told I couldn't go in yet and I "woke up" in the middle of the ocean. Definitely not in the water park anymore. It was dark like a night with no moon and a whole lot of hands were trying to pull me under water saying "come play with us" or some spooky stuff like that. I don't remember exactly. I just remember it was annoying to move past them as I was trying to swim to some nearby small island that spontaneously appeared. The water was so deep and the waves were mildly rough. Only my face was able to be above the water and I was struggling to stay afloat. Finally got to the island and some music from the original gen 3 pokemon ruby/sapphire/emerald began playing. I think it was the theme from Sootopolis but I don't remember. But I soon woke up for real. Bunch of tape was peeling off my wall. The big bunch of tape I had covering a hole. Nothing supernatural probably. Must have been thrashing in my sleep lol? But being awake led me to realize Leon in the dream wasn't in the direct area of the high dive of doom and didn't see the death happen. But I, (as Grusha) was in the ocean so I couldn't go explain to Leon what happened. Heck, I don't even know if the ocean was in the same "world" anymore. But what would I have even said to Leon?? "Sorry, Leon. Your brother went upstairs and I am a sinner unworthy of paradise until I get my act together."?! But man the thing with the spooky hands in the ocean felt so real. Like I was actually being grabbed irl. A part of me is tempted to base something in a horror/angst fic off that experience.

Now that i've made some headway into the new games I can revisit this* little series of posts:
*[Kanto] [Johto] [Hoenn] [Sinnoh] [Unova] [Kalos] [Alola] [Galar] [Hisui] [Champs] [Paldea] [Paldea2] [Paldea3] [Teams] [Misc.]
Katy's name in Japanese is Kaede[カエデ] from kaede[楓] the japanese word for the maple tree. While the link is likely the Japanese use of maple syrup as a natural sugar in a lot of traditional pastries, it's kind of an odd choice of design when the Japanese maple is so well known for its deep red leaves, and even other maple trees are distinctly associated with various shades of red, orange, and yellow... Yet she's all brown with just a dash of minty green in there?
I covered Brassius' name in the lead up to game release but his Japanese name is Korusa[コルサ] as in Colza, another name for rapeseed or canola. He shares a namesake plant with Natane and Nabana, in Sinnoh/Hisui, but appears otherwise unrelated. Weird that his design is plant themed yet totally unrelated.
Iono's name was one I wasnt sure of at first, in Japanese it's Nanjamo[ナンジャモ] which is a pun on Nanjamonja[何じゃもんじゃ], which is and exclamation that gets translated very loosely as something like "what the hell is that!?" What i didnt realize at first and that apparently Nanjamonja-no-ki[なんじゃもんじゃの木] is actually the common name of the Chionanthus retusus, the Chinese fringetree. Incidentally I also thought for a moment that her name was a reference to nanjamonja-goke[ナンジャモンジャゴケ], the Takakia lepidozioides moss. But Iono's English name seems to come from the "...iona..." in Chionanthus...
Kofu's name is Haidai[ハイダイ] from the chinese name hǎidài[海带] for a type of Kelp/seaweed(Saccharina japonica). The English name might be a halfbaked attempt at appropriating makonbu[真昆布], the japanese name for the same plant; noting that the ko...bu[こ...ぶ] and kofu[こふ] are written similarly. Anyway... Given the chef gimmick, the seaweed you have to barter for for him, and the fact that one of his town's unique features is a chinese restaurant, it would appear to refer to it specifically as food. It's also the logo on his apron.
Tumblr media
Larry's name is Aoki[アオキ] from aoki[青木] the spotted laurel/Japanese laurel tree.(Aucuba japonica) Funny enough it reminds me of Norman's name being Senri from the Senryo plant, which is a similar looking plant with red berries, and they're both normal type specialists. His highlights are similar in shape and color to aoki leaves. And they seem to have gotten Larry from Laurel.
Ryme... Her name is Raimu[ライム] as in Lime, homonym with Rhyme. She raps, but she does not appear to resemble limes... Her sister Tyme is taimu[タイム] like the herb thyme. I dont know why the english localization felt the need to remove the "h" in both of these.
Tulip's name was already Rippu[リップ] as in Lip from tulip.
Grusha/guruusha[グルーシャ] I've done before too. He's named in Russian, grusha[груша]: "pear." His big winter coat makes his head and torso pearshaped.
Tumblr media
Rika's name is Chiri[チリ] like Chilipeppers, the genus Capsicum. Some other languages opted to name her after cayenne, but the English name Rika comes from Paprika. Funny enough it has nothing to do with Chili from Unova, as his name, like all his brothers', was originally a reference to corn, not any sort of pepper.
Poppy is popii[ポピー] is poppy. Although they come in a few colors they all have the distinctive black center, which I assume is meant to be reflected in the design of Poppy's hair.
It's just Larry/Aoki again...
Hassel's name in Japanese is Hassaku[ハッサク] from hassaku[八朔] aka the "jagada," a type of orange cultivated in Japan, known for being larger than most oranges; about the size of a grapefruit.
Geeta's name is Omodaka[オモダ] from Omodaka[沢瀉] a tree called the threeleaf arrowhead/Chinese arrowhead (Sagittaria trifolia). Its also prominently featured in Japanese family crests, like that of the Sawada, included above.
Tumblr media
Might as well get Team Star is in on this too! In the same way Guzma and Plumeria were kind of villainous alternatives to trial captains, for bug and poison type respectively, the Team Star sub-bosses kind of occupy a sort of pseudo/demi-gym leader status.
Giacomo's name is Piinya[ピーニャ] as in Piña:"Pineapple." His puffy autumn uniform vest and spiky hair makes him look like a pineapple.
Mela's name is Meroko[メロコ] seemingly taken from the Meloco... Of melocotón, Spanish word for "peach." Her red is a little too vibrant for it to be obvious, but her yellow to red hair appears to be peach inspired.
Atticus's name is Shuumei[シュウメイ] from Shumeigiku[秋明菊] Japanese name of a flower called the "fall-blooming anemone"(Anemone hupehensis japonica). It comes in a few shades of pink and violet that seem to match the poison type color motif.
Ortega's name is just a tiny tweak from Orutiga[オルティガ]:"Ortiga" spanish name for nettle, a broad family of herbs known for their stinging hairs.
Eri's Japanese mame is Biwa[ビワ] from biwa[枇杷]: "loquat"(Eriobotrya japonica) a tree with a long history of its fruit and leaves bring used for food and tea. It is sometimes erroneously called the "Japanese Plum."
Tumblr media
And just to round things out a little...
Nemona's English name came from her Japanese name, Nemo[ネモ] from the Nemo nemphilia, a broad range of flowers known for their baby blue color. Oddly thats not reflected in her actual design..
Laughably Arven's name was Pepaa[ペパー]:"Pepper" and you would think it would refer to... You know... peppers. But given the English name, Arven from Mentha arvensis, it's actually a reference to peppermint which does make sense with his herb theme.
Penny's name is Botan[ボタン] from Botan[牡丹] Japanese name for the "tree Peony"(Paeonia suffruticosa) The peony has long standing cultural importance in China and by some proxy Japan, and is often compared to the Rose's prominence in Western Europe; this is incidentally why Chairman Rose's brother in Galar is named Peony. Incidentally this is likely why they had to name her Penny, as Peony had been taken.
Clavell's name is actually the same, Kuraberu[クラベル] approximating "Clavel" the Spanish name for the Carnation. He shares a flower name with Champion Diantha in Kalos.
Oops, first pass thru i forgot about the school faculty so i've added a post for those

❝ ... hey, kid. are you alright? ❞ hands are stuffed in grusha's pockets as he awkwardly approaches the younger man — maybe it isn't his place to ask, but he couldn't just leave him here without making sure he'd be okay. a hand moves upward briefly to pull down his scarf &&. scratch at his chin before he crouches next to him &&. tilts his head. ❝ i'd be careful if i were you. if you cry, your tears would definitely freeze onto your face out here. ❞ / @rxmedyfind

as much as i joke about grusha being a terrible grumpy old man, especially towards younger people, he is a great big brother. like, my god. even though his siblings are all grown up now too, he's still so protective of them. they've gone on to their own lives in paldea, but they come up to visit him &&. nieve in the mountain every year for their birthdays &&. the holidays. their father died after grusha's youngest brother was born, so a lot of grusha's teenage years were spent helping his mother take care of them when not snowboarding. most, if not all, of his earnings from winning competitions went towards his family, too. he is very family oriented &&. would do anything for them ... &&. if you're younger than him &&. also on his good side, he will big brother you to death. you've just gotta get past his colder exterior first &&. then you will find that he is a biiiig softie.
also the only reason he didn't kill himself during his post - injury recovery period is because he doesn't want them to get saddled with the burden of chien-pao themselves. ty smile.
