Elf Shaman - yet another archetype for Shadowrun (1st Edition)
In visiting and critiquing the 1st edition archetypes, I’ve frequently shamed magical archetypes for low Charisma – neglecting the Conjuring aspect of magic in favor of Sorcery. Drek, I even created what I claimed was the best Metahuman Magician – the Dwarf Mage – who didn’t even *have* the Conjuring skill.

Now it’s time to remedy that. Again – The Grimoire will introduce Adepts that can concentrate in only one magical skill, but… I’m not doing that. Core rulebook only. Also, easy to see why it must be an Elf Shaman.

Elves get +2 Charisma, meaning that after maxing out Charisma (natch), you can have Force 8 spirits. They will frag up that Red Samurai newbie asking you what you’re doing sneaking around the Renraku Arcology. And there’s already an Elf Mage (the less said about her, the better), so Shaman it is.
I heard that.
To the Master Character Creation Table! (“Creation” wasn’t added until 2nd Edition. This is the tiniest bit of Shadowrun trivia that exists.)
Another reminder that Metahumans were supposed to be rare in 1st edition – and shamefully so (with Allergies adding insult to injury) – so that a Metahuman Magician already had to use up Priorities 3 & 4 just to merely exist. Priority 2 will be Attributes: there’s a reason why Charisma is usually a dump stat, and they still need to be able to cast spells (can’t dump Willpower), so get as many points as possible (with 20):
Body: 3
Quickness: 3
Strength: 2
Charisma: 8
Intelligence: 3
Willpower: 4
Essence : 6
Magic: 6
Reaction: 3
In dropping down to Willpower 4, we’ve already admitted they aren’t going to focus on spellcasting, yet don’t want to dip down to Tech Priority (100 ¥, 5 spell points) and start with no gear. Take Tech Priority 1 (1000 ¥, 10 spell points), which is what the Street Mage, Street Shaman, and Shaman start with too, and thus Skills Priority 0 (17 skill points). This means the Elf Shaman won’t be as broad in terms of skills, but that’s fine. Just the basics:
Conjuring: 6
Etiquette (Street): 3
Firearms: 2
Sorcery: 4
Stealth: 2
The choice of skills reveals that this is meant to be an Elf Street Shaman – with a low strength, using Firearms instead of Armed Combat or Projectile Weapons gives them a chance of delivering some decent ranged damage. For spells, then:
Heal Deadly Wounds: 6
Mask: 4
Here you could go any number of routes -- I’m envisioning the Elf Shaman doing most of their combat via spirits (or, as a back, a gun), so taking a Healing spell and an Illusion spell rounds things out nicely. Finally, just take the Street Shaman’s Gear list (Medicine Lodge Materials (1), Medkit, Ruger Super Warhawk) and Contacts (choose two of Any Street Type, Gang Member, Street Samurai, Talismonger).
