Context: This was from the story The Phoenix on the Sword, which I believe was the first Conan story Howard ever wrote. More importantly, this is a boast from the evil sorcerer Thoth Amon, who is bested thanks to Conan getting his sword blessed by ancient sage, Epimetrius, with the titular mark of the phoenix. In other words, the wits of an old sage and the sword of a barbarian are in fact straws that slurp darkness dry.
