FEMALE AWESOME MEME | (3/10) Queens ~ Emma of Normandy (Vikings: Valhalla)
I arrived in this county as a 15 year old girl, who could not speak the language and was a piece of property. I am now the queen of an expanding empire, and a wealthy woman in my own right. If you think that I'm incapable of taking care of both, my husband's interest and my own, you do so at your own peril.

German folk tale: "As white as snow, as red as blood, and as black as ebony."
2024: "Nope."
Tumblr media
Lily Collins | Rachel Zegler
There's a weird adaptation (Grimm's Snow White) from 2012 where she has blonde hair (why?!?). The plot has nothing to do with the fairy tale, but at least they could use the title I think? We can probably expect the same from Disney now. If Rachel wouldn't wear this dress (what is THAT? 😳), I wouldn't guess that she's supposed to be SNOW WHITE ... I've seen some weird adaptations of my German folk tale, but at least they showed some respect and changed the title from "Snow White" into something else ...
No Snow White, no dwarfs, no prince, no love ... - if a movie does not contain the story of Snow White, it should not be labeled as such.
[Snow White and the seven Dwarfs, 1937
Schneewittchen und die 7 Zwerge, 1955
Schneewittchen, 1962
Snow White: A Tale of Terror, 1997
Schneewittchen, 2009
Once upon a time, 2011
Mirror Mirror, 2012
Snow White and the Huntsman, 2012
Snow White, 2024]

And they are from München. So freakin‘ nice! Holy moly!
Can’t wait to see them live again. 😭💕
They didn’t play My Hero, which is sad. That was my first song I heard from them. Buuuuut they played all the other nice stuff and the setlists were on fire 👌
That’s the Playlist from Tuesday in München. Enjoy 😬

Los Super Seven to Reunite for Democracy
- “It’s great to be able to get the band back together one more time in support of such a hugely important cause,” Steve Berlin says
Los Super Seven is reuniting for a concert benefitting democracy in Texas and war relief in Ukraine.
This time around, the revolving-door group will include Los Lobos’ David Hidalgo, Cesar Rosas and Steve Berlin; Gaby Moreno; Los Texmaniacs; and others.
The June 16 gig at Los Angeles’ Ukrainian Culture Center is Los Super Seven’s third concert since 2018. Proceeds benefit Texas Turnout and the center’s war-relief efforts in Ukraine.
The group formed in 1998 and has released three albums.
“There’s nothing better than enjoying a great night of fantastic music while doing our part in supporting voting rights in Texas,” Berlin said in a statement.
“It’s great to be able to get the band back together one more time in support of such a hugely important cause.”

Berlin, City Smell Research. Sissel Tolaas (Norwegian, born 1962) 2004.
Glass and smell simulation
Each bottle: 5 7/8 x 7 1/16 x 2 3/8" (15 x 18 x 6 cm)
“Smell immediately locates you in a space,” says artist, designer, chemist, and odor theorist Sissel Tolaas. “It gives you new tools to perceive your surroundings.” Throughout her career Tolaas has worked provocatively with smell, applying headspace technology—used in the perfume industry to capture and synthesize natural scents—to render essences ranging from the objectionable (sweat, rotten fish, dog feces) to the everyday (fresh laundry, kebabs, shoe shop) and put them into an archive of more than seven thousand scents. From this archive she has created fragrances that do not adhere to the usual definitions of what smells good or desirable; instead, her aim is to stimulate emotional responses, evoke memories, and recreate places in all their chaos and specificity. While conducting her City Smell Research, which was presented at the Berlin Biennale in 2004, Tolaasworked in various Berlin districts to distill an essential scent for each one, creating an olfactory map of the city. The scents are contained in bottles that physically recall the city map and compass points. This work is not simply the charting of a landscape of smell; it also explores the potential of smell as information that enhances and subverts the physical and symbolic boundaries of the urban ecosystem.

The Schlörwagen
Tumblr media
The Schlörwagen was a radical aerodynamic prototype from 1939 developed by Karl Schlör von Westhofen-Dirmstein at the Aerodynamic Research Institute in Göttingen.
Tumblr media
The prototype was shown on the International Automobile Exhibition in Berlin in 1939. The car attracted much attention, but car critics derided it as ugly. Although Mercedes-Benz was interested in series production, the design remained in prototype stage due to the outbreak of World War II.
Tumblr media
The aerodynamic body fitting seven seats was mounted on the chassis of a rear-engined Mercedes-Benz 170H. Test drives on the Autobahn revealed a superior top speed and fuel economy due to its excellent Cx value of 0.15 to 0.18, a figure unseen in modern cars. However, the car was difficult to drive under crosswind conditions.
Tumblr media
During the war, a captured Soviet aircraft engine and propeller was attached to the rear of the vehicle, and test drives were made on the Autobahn near Göttingen.
Tumblr media
At the end of the war, the prototype was confiscated by the British occupation authorities, but remained in Göttingen on the premises of the Aerodynamic Research Institute.
Tumblr media
Efforts by Karl Schlör von Westhofen-Dirmstein to get the car back from the British occupation authorities failed.
Tumblr media
After August 1948, the car – meanwhile damaged by vandalism – was no longer seen in Göttingen. Its whereabouts have been unknown ever since.

there has been some discussion on here that people should not call themselves central european, as that "doesn't exist, there is only the west and the (ex-soviet) east".
so here is the story of how my parents met. it's a long one snd it features a world war, the cold war and the iron curtain, but i promise it is a love story. here goes:
1936. my german grandfather lives in a small village in eastern pomerania, then germany, with his mother. my polish side of the family, part of an indigenious slavic minority, the kashubians, lives just six kilometers east across the border in poland.
1939. germany invades poland. with the front and the border moving east, my kashubian grandfather is incidentally born on german territory as a german citizen. he is the youngest of eleven - all his siblings are polish citizens.
1942. my german grandfather is drafted into the army and taken as a prisoner of war. the same year, my kashubian grandfather is murdered in a concentration camp for collusion against nazi germany.
1945. my german grandfather has returned from russia. the border has moved, west this time, and his old home is in poland now, and behind the iron curtain. he decides to stay in western germany.
1946. my kashubian great-grandmother, a widowed woman with eleven children, has lost her house during the war. she moves into an abandoned home in a now polish recovered territories.
1982. it's the height of the cold war. my german grandfather has not stopped wondering what has happened to his old home. with a sailing ship, he and my father make it to poland and to his old house. my kashubian grandfather, now married and father of seven children, opens the door. and in true kashubian hospitality, invites them to stay the night. my parents, both teenagers, and without a shared language, meet for the first time. and fall in love.
1987. my father is discharged from the west german army because of his frequent travels behind the iron curtain to visit his girlfriend. my mother gets a german passport issued without a citizen test as her father is technically german.
1996. the berlin wall has fallen, but more importantly, my parents are getting married in poland. their families got over the language barrier, and my grandfathers have gotten over their different sides in the war. the reception is in three languages - german, kashubian, and polish. in the house both my grandfathers grew up in.
a few years later, my brother and i are born. german- polish- kashubian. with two passports and three mother tongues. and then again. from one single house in germany- poland- recovered-territories- kashubia- pomerania.
so we just say we are central european.
