Unsure if you are aware of this update, but apparently someone got into the Twit api and believes that the "rate limiting" is actually a cover up by Elon bc they accidenlty pushed an update DDOSing their own site, which is why he says its "temporary" in his tweet. Not sure if Elon is actually trying to cover-up, or if the DDOS is an unintended side effect of the change

As far as I can tell, the folks advancing that theory have it perfectly backwards. The rate limit isn't an effort to address the self-DDoS situation: the rate limit is causing the self-DDoS situation.

In a nutshell, when you load up Twitter in your browser, two things are happening:

In response to your initial request, Twitter's server sends your browser the information it needs to construct the website's user interface (UI).

Once the UI has been constructed within your browser, it instructs your browser to dispatch a separate request, via the Twitter API, requesting content (i.e., tweets and ads) to fill itself with.

(It's actually a little more complex than that, because the response to the initial request may come pre-filled with a portion of the required content in order to speed things up the first time you visit your dashboard, but that's the gist of it, anyway.)

So, what happens now that the rate limit is in place?

Well, the rate limit doesn't affect the first request – it's not using the API, so your browser is able to construct the Twitter UI just fine. The moment you try to scroll your Twitter dashboard, however, that triggers the Twitter UI that's been constructed within your browser to ask the Twitter API for more content so you can keep scrolling – and that request is subject to the rate limit.

If you happen already to have exceeded your rate limit, that request is going to receive a response along the lines of "Error 429 – Rate Limit Exceeded". Here's the trick: while Twitter did update the UI to reflect the addition of a rate limit (i.e., they're not complete idiots), it turns out they did an incomplete job, and certain dashboard widgets don't know what to do with an error 429.

Now, the fun part: apparently, what the affected Twitter dashboard widgets are coded to do when they receive a response they don't recognise is simply to ignore it and try again. Further, nobody thought to impose a delay between attempts, so they retry immediately upon receiving the unrecognised error 429. For users with snappy Internet service, this can result in their browser making multiple attempts per second to retrieve content for the affected Twitter dashboard widgets, receiving (and ignoring) the same error code each time.

And that's how Twitter ended up accidentally ordering its own users to DDoS its API.

ok but why is syncthing actually really cool

bc like rsync can sync files one way (if it changes on the server, the client updates the file, but if the client changes the file, it doesn't get changed to the server)

but syncthing can do it both ways, which is actually super cool

plus it's ridiculously easy to use, it even has a web UI (and GTK if you aren't able to use the web UI). it can search for devices anywhere on the local network. you can pair a device just with a QR code. it can compress things when sending over the network. it continuously watches the FS for changes and automatically immediately syncs them. and a ton of other cool stuff

it's perfect for me cuz I have two computers, a home laptop with no battery and a netbook with a barely usable battery. and I can easily sync files between them

and the best part? it's completely open source.

like I was not expecting any open source software to be this perfect of a solution for what I needed. bc when you want to sync things your immediate thoughts are some cloud service like OneDrive, which is proprietary. and Linux ports of the OneDrive API are shaky at best.

or rsync, which only works in one direction. and it needs at least some CLI experience.

or some sort of network drive, which doesn't actually store the files on the client.

but like this is perfect. plus it saved me from catastrophic failure when my SSD died.

i really really want to start a lowkey writing club with some of my irl writing friends and so in service of that ive started trying to code a discord bot.

it should be fairly simple like, commands to enter prompts, a list where prompts are saved, a function to randomly output one of the prompts (+delete from list) at a specific time (daily/weekly etc depending on choice, hardcoded in). I figured it wouldnt really be easy but the hardest part would be the time thing bc i always struggle with date/time apis

but the thing is i havent properly coded. using my brain. in like... 3 years? and yes i have that computer science degree and that 3.4 but i'm convinced i'm bad at coding. like i genuinely believe it because i am. there's a lot of negative emotions for me associated with like, struggling with programming and coding things and just feeling lost in it all and i've avoided that since i graduated by like. not coding. quitting my one job bc i would have to code. refusing to talk to people about it.

and i'm worried that all those emotions are going to come back now because i'm already running into obstacles bc every tutorial is too complicated or not what i need and i.

I just want this one thign to work? I just want to prove to myself that like, i didn't waste four years of my life and trash my mental health for nothing? like if i can't even do a hobbyist side project, something pretty simple, what was all that time and money and heartbreak for.

The Serapeum of Saqqara is a serapeum located north west of the Pyramid of Djoser at Saqqara, a necropolis near Memphis in Lower Egypt. It was a burial place of Apis bulls, sacred bulls that were incarnations of the ancient Egyptian deity Ptah. It was believed that the bulls became immortal after death as Osiris Apis, a name that appears in Coptic as ⲟⲩⲥⲉⲣϩⲁⲡⲓ, Userhapi, which was borrowed in Greek as Σέραπις, Serapis, in the Hellenistic period.

The most ancient burials found at this site date back to the reign of Amenhotep III, the ninth pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty during the 1350s BC.

Working as an administrator during the reign of his father, Khaemweset, a son of Ramesses II (1279–1213 BC) of the Nineteenth Dynasty, ordered that a tunnel be excavated at the site, and a catacomb of galleries – now known as the "Lesser Vaults" – be designed with side chambers to contain the sarcophagi for the mummified remains of the bulls. But for one, all chambers were found emptied of their contents except for a disarray of dedication stelae. 

A second gallery of chambers, now known as the "Greater Vaults", was excavated under Psamtik I (664–610 BC) of the Twenty-sixth Dynasty and later extended to approximately 350 m in length, 5 m tall and 3 m wide by the Ptolemaic dynasty along with a long, parallel service tunnel. These gallery chambers contained granite and diorite sarcophagi, some weighing up to 70 tonnes (including lid), though all were found empty. 

The long boulevard leading to the ceremonial site, flanked by 600 sphinxes, likely was built under Nectanebo I, (379/8–361/0 BC) the founder of the Thirtieth Dynasty (the last native one).

The temple was discovered by Auguste Mariette, who had gone to Egypt to collect Coptic-language manuscripts, but later grew interested in the remains of the Saqqara necropolis. In 1850, Mariette found the head of one sphinx sticking out of the shifting desert dunes, cleared the sand and followed the boulevard to the site. After using explosives to clear rocks blocking the entrance to the catacomb, he excavated most of the complex. Unfortunately, his notes of the excavation were lost, which has complicated the use of these burials in establishing an Egyptian chronology.

Mariette found one undisturbed burial, which is now at the Agricultural Museum in Cairo. The other 24 sarcophagi of the bulls had been robbed.
