The Cranberries - Zombie 1994
"Zombie" is a protest song by Irish alternative rockband the Cranberries. It was written by the lead singer, Dolores O'Riordan, about the young victims of a bombing in Warrington, England, during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. The song was released on 19 September 1994 as the lead single from the Cranberries' second studio album, No Need to Argue. While the record label feared releasing a too controversial and politically charged song as a single, "Zombie" reached number 1 on the charts of Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and Iceland, and spent nine consecutive weeks at number 1 on the French SNEP Top 100. It reached number 2 on the Ö3 Austria Top 40, where it stayed for eight weeks. The song did not chart on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart as it wasn't released as a single there, but it reached number 1 on the US Billboard Alternative Airplay chart. Listeners of the Australian radio station Triple J voted it number 1 on the 1994 Triple J Hottest 100 chart, and it won the Best Song Award at the 1995 MTV Europe Music Awards.
The Troubles were a conflict in Northern Ireland from the late 1960s to 1998. The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), an Irish republican paramilitary organisation, waged an armed campaign to end British rule in Northern Ireland and unite the region with the Republic of Ireland. Republican and Unionist paramilitaries killed more than 3,500 people, many from thousands of bomb attacks. One of the bombings happened on 30 March 1993, as two IRA improvised explosive devices hidden in litter bins were detonated in a shopping street in Warrington, England. Two people; Johnathan Ball, aged 3, and Tim Parry, aged 12, were killed in the attack. 56 people were injured. Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries, and five days later, Parry lost his life in a hospital as a result of head injuries. O'Riordan decided to write a song that reflected upon the event and the children's deaths after visiting the town: "We were on a tour bus and I was near the location where it happened, so it really struck me hard – I remember being devastated about the innocent children being pulled into that kind of thing. So I suppose that's why I was saying, 'It's not me' – that even though I'm Irish it wasn't me, I didn't do it. Because being Irish, it was quite hard, especially in the UK when there was so much tension." The song was re-popularised in 2023 after it was played after Ireland games at the 2023 Rugby World Cup. It was picked up by fans of the Irish team, with videos of fans singing the song in chorus accumulating hundreds of thousands of views on social media. This offended other Irishmen, who identified it as an "anti-IRA" anthem, and said that that the lyrics failed to consider their experience during the Troubles.
The music video, directed by Samuel Bayer, was filmed in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in the heart of the Troubles with real footage, and in Dublin. To record video footage of murals, children and British Army soldiers on patrol, he had a false pretext, with a cover story about making a documentary about the peace-keeping efforts in Ireland. Bayer stated that a shot in the video where an SA80 rifle is pointed directly at the camera is a suspicious British soldier asking him to leave, and that the IRA were keeping a close look at the shoot, given "the British Army come in with fake film crews, getting people on camera.” While "Zombie" received heavy rotation on MTV Europe and was A-listed on Germany's VIVA, the music video was banned by the BBC because of its "violent images", and by the RTÉ, Ireland's national broadcaster. Instead, both the BBC and the RTÉ opted to broadcast an edited version focusing on footage of the band in a live performance, a version that the Cranberries essentially disowned. Despite their efforts to maintain the original video "out of view from the public", some of the initial footage prevailed, with scenes of children holding guns. In March 2003, on the eve of the outbreak of the Iraq War, the British Government and the Independent Television Commission issued a statement saying ITC's Programme Code would temporarily remove from broadcast songs and music videos featuring "sensitive material", including "Zombie". Numerous media groups complied with the decision to avoid "offending public feeling", along with MTV Europe. Since it violated the ITC guidelines, "Zombie" was placed on a blacklist of songs, targeting its official music video. The censorship was lifted once the war had ended. In April 2020, it became the first song by an Irish group to surpass one billion views on Youtube.
"Zombie" received a total of 91% yes votes!

The musician Maurice el Médioni, who has died aged 95, provided a reminder that there was a time – in the period between the second world war and Algerian independence in 1962 – when Muslim and Jewish musicians worked together in Algeria to transform the country’s popular music.
He was a pianist who could play, and blend together, almost any musical style. His left hand might pump out stomping boogie rhythms while his right hand played Arabic or Andalusian styles. He could switch from French chanson and cabaret to Latin themes, and he played a key role in the development of the Algerian styles chaabi and raï.
El Médioni described his early life in the Algerian port city of Oran as “playing in bars and at Arabic marriages or Jewish weddings or playing in a big chaabi orchestra for the Algiers radio station. I started out playing boogie-woogie that I learned from the Americans, then Latin music, flamenco and Andalusian music. I was one of the first to do that and brought it into Arabic music, and now they love it.”
He was a star in Algeria in the 1950s, but then came the Algerian war, independence and the large-scale exodus of the Jewish population. El Médioni left for Israel in 1961, but when he realised that many of his exiled musician friends had moved to Paris he decided to join them. There he worked as a tailor by day and a musician by night – a lifestyle he continued when he moved to Marseille in 1967.
After decades in the musical wilderness, El Médioni eventually built an international reputation when in his 60s. The French producer Francis Falceto (creator of the Éthiopiques series) heard a cassette of El Médioni’s music and played it to the British musician and producer Ben Mandelson. Mandelson produced a recording session in Berlin, with El Médioni playing alongside some of his own musician friends and some British musicians, and the resulting album, Café Oran (1996), introduced his unique piano style to a new audience.
He followed with the album PianOriental (2000) and in the same year played at the Soul of Algeria concert at the Barbican in London, accompanying his old friend the Jewish Algerian singer Lili Boniche, in a line-up that included the Algerian “grandmother of raï”, Cheikha Rimitti.
In 2003 he opened for the British band Oi Va Voi and then joined them for the encores at shows at the ICA in London, and in Moscow and Los Angeles, and in 2006 released Descarga Oriental with the Cuban percussionist Roberto Rodriguez. Recorded in New York, the album was a reminder that Latin styles were among those he had loved and learned back in Oran. The album won a BBC Radio 3 World Music award.
The following year El Médioni played a major role in the El Gusto project, which involved an album, a film and a series of concerts that reunited Muslim and Jewish musicians from Algeria. He had declined to appear at a concert in Algeria, saying it was “not the right time” to return, but starred in an emotional show in Marseille that ended with a rousing version of the Algerian favourite Ya Rayah. In 2008 there was a further reunion with Algerian musicians as he opened for Khaled, raï’s biggest international star, at the Barbican; he had earlier played on Khaled’s 2004 album Ya-Rayi.
In 2011, and by now in his 80s, El Médioni and his wife, Juliette (nee Amsallem), whom he married in 1953, moved to Israel to live close to their children. He continued to record and perform, working with the Orchestra Ashkelon and the singer Neta Elkayam, and was a major influence on young Israeli pianists. He returned to London in 2012 to play with the Iraqi oud player Khyam Allami.
Born in Oran, in French Algeria, Maurice was one of four siblings brought up by their mother, Fany, following the death of their father, Jacob. Jacob had run the Café Saoud in the city’s Jewish quarter along with his brother, Messaoud El Médioni, the renowned musician better known as Saoud l’Oranais. Maurice attended the Ecole St André, and started to learn the piano when he was nine, playing by ear and listening to the musicians who gathered at the cafe.
He incorporated anything that he heard into his playing, learning Latin, jazz and boogie-woogie from the black American GIs who arrived in the city after the liberation of Oran in 1942. He played in clubs popular with the soldiers, and made sure his audience heard the music they wanted. He also composed and played for the big names of the Jewish Algerian cabaret scene, including Boniche and Line Monty. He had been persuaded by his mother to follow a career as a tailor, but music was his passion.
In 2017 he published his memoir From Oran to Marseilles (1936-1990) with help from his British followers. The preface was by Mandelson, the foreword, translation and interviews were by Jonathan Walton (a former member of Oi Va Voi, who uses the name Lemez Lovas as a musician), and the editor was the broadcaster and musician Max Reinhardt, who described him as “charming, open-hearted, wise and witty … a compulsive musician who couldn’t wait to get near a keyboard”.
Juliette died in 2022. El Médioni is survived by his children, Yacov, Marilyne and Michael, and five grandchildren, Jeremie, Barbara, Benjamin, Nourit and Emmanuel.

Acclaimed Los Angeles-based Icelandic-Chinese artist, composer, producer and multi-instrumentalist Laufey reveals new track “Bewitched,” alongside a music video. The video was shot in London by director Lewis Cater.
A good song, but it sounds like a number from a Disney princess move. Give it a listen and let us know what you think.
“Bewitched” is the latest offering from her highly anticipated forthcoming album Bewitched, due September 8 via AWAL Recordings. About the song, which features accompaniment from the London-based Philharmonia Orchestra, Laufey explains, “‘Bewitched’ is a love song. I wanted the Philharmonia Orchestra to illustrate that feeling when you’re first falling in love with someone, and for it to emulate the thoughts that run through your head after a perfect first date.”
The new music is already receiving widespread attention—the album’s first single, “From The Start,” is garnering 1.5M streams per day across DSPs, and is currently the most streamed jazz song in the U.S., Top 50 overall on Spotify in the U.S., #6 on the U.S. Viral Charts, and Top 50 on the U.S. Shazam charts. Moreover, NPR Music praised her previously released track “Promise” as “delicate poetic music.” Bewitched follows Laufey’s 2022 debut full-length, Everything I Know About Love, which reached #1 on Billboard’s Alternative New Artist Album chart and featured hit single, “Valentine,” that peaked at #1 on the Spotify Jazz Chart.
While Everything I Know About Love shows what Laufey calls her “hopeless romantic” side, Bewitched has a more mature outlook, although it’s still in love with love. Laufey notes, “This is a love album, whether it be a love towards a friend or a lover or life. The first album also touched a lot on things like moving out of my childhood home and moving into a new city for the first time—being an adult. With this one, I’ve experienced a little bit more of that, and I’m writing about the magic in the love of being young.”
Additionally, Laufey will celebrate the album on the road this fall with ‘The Bewitched Tour,’ which sold out in minutes. The tour will make stops at iconic venues throughout North America including two nights at San Francisco’s Fillmore, Chicago’s Thalia Hall, New York City’s Town Hall, and Los Angeles’ Theatre at the Ace Hotel. Laufey’s performance at The Ford on September 16 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic is also sold out, and she is set to perform at the Kennedy Center with the National Symphony Orchestra on release day. Full tour routing below.
Laufey (pronounced lāy-vāy) is looking to bridge the gap between the past and the present, the history books and social media, the Reykjavik concert hall Harpa and the Los Angeles rock dive Troubadour, by writing, recording, and performing songs that are truly timeless, inspired by jazz greats and classical masters while possessing a point of view that could only be conveyed by a 21st-century twentysomething. Laufey explains, “As a musician, my goal is to bring jazz and classical music to my generation through a more accessible road.”
Raised between Reykjavík and Washington, D.C. with annual visits to Beijing, the Icelandic-Chinese artist grew up playing cello as well as piano and became hooked on the jazz standards of Ella Fitzgerald after digging through her father’s record collection. In 2020, while still a student at Berklee College of Music, Laufey released her debut single “Street by Street,” which went on to top the Icelandic radio charts. Following the release of her 2021 Typical of Me EP, Laufey was named Best New Artist in Jazz and Blues at the Icelandic Music Awards and hosted her own show on BBC Radio 3/BBC Sounds. By 2022 Laufey was the most streamed jazz artist on Spotify. Today, she has 500 million streams across all platforms and is the biggest streaming artist from Iceland in the world.

ALASDAIR ROBERTS + IAN A. ANDERSON
Sat 1st Apr 2023 @ The Blue Moon Doors 8pm, tickets £14 adv from here
ALASDAIR ROBERTS
Over 25 years since he first emerged into the public consciousness as the leader of Appendix Out, the didactic folkist Alasdair Roberts continues to enthral with his very particular take on traditional Scottish music. Whether reinterpreting existing material from the repertoire or conjuring up his own original lore his distinctively persistent and crisp voice carries tales of love and death across histories, both actual and perceived, into the here and now. Whether solo or as one of his numerous collaborations (with the likes of Alex Nielson, Jason Molina, Will Oldham, or as part of BBC Radio 2 Folk award winners, The Furrow Collective) Roberts splices the familiar with the uncommon to create music that is at once immediate and apparent, yet tantalisingly other and warranting persistence. His long association with the estimable Drag City continues into 2023 with his latest release, "Grief in the Kitchen and Mirth in the Hall", a collection of twelve traditional songs and ballads from Scotland and beyond, delivered in his inimitable style. http://www.alasdairroberts.com/
IAN A. ANDERSON
Ian A. Anderson began his musical career in the mid 1960s, heavily influenced by old country blues players, before taking a left-swerve in the early ’70s with a trio of psych-folk albums for the pioneering and now highly collectable independent label Village Thing. He eventually settled into a personal and notably English style drawn from traditional folk, blues, old-time and world roots musics, making some dozen albums with projects such as Hot Vultures (with Maggie Holland), the English Country Blues Band and Tiger Moth. More recent collaborations include activities with PiL’s Lu Edmonds and 3 Mustaphas 3’s Ben Mandelson and a double-header partnership with Northumbrian traditional music master Alistair Anderson. www.ianaanderson.com ghostsfromthebasement.bandcamp.com

For the sake of the argument, and since I’ve seen a lot of misinformation about Liam’s situation in articles and people saying he isn’t successful/can’t chart a song, I want to put things in context.
If an artist doesn’t have a promo strategy (label+management) how do you expect him to chart? Every “successful” or “popular” artist has a team behind them pushing the songs/albuns to the general public on radios, tv shows, concerts, etc.
Gonna use two examples for Liam of what worked and didn’t work on his solo career using Strip That Down and Sunshine.
Strip That Down (promo strategy that lasted at least 4-6 months)
Radios: 1236572358569 interviews in every radio station (major and even the tiny ones) across the world. He did UK promo tour when the single was out and had previously did a US promo tour. He did a lot of other European countries (France, Sweden, Italy, Germany, etc.), Latin America, Canada and Australia. Even if some of the interviews were over the phone or video conference. A lot of the times he also performed the song.
TV shows: a lot of appearances in morning/afternoon/late shows to promote the single in UK and US (major market). Even going to some major shows across Europe (I’m remembering the ones he did in France, for example). He did interviews and performed the song.
Concerts: he did so many appearances in a lot of events just to sing this one song across the world. A lot of music awards and festivals too! He literally was booked to sing one song.
Other interviews: he filmed a lot of little segments for other sorts of media posted online and even did some interviews with YouTubers.
Conclusion: Strip That Down was constantly playing in every radio and the streams were major (it’s still his most streamed song ever). He was able to chart in a lot of countries getting a #3 in the UK and #1 in the US. This was a work made along MONTHS! Not days or weeks, but months!
Sunshine (promo strategy that lasted 2 months, but really was 2 weeks)
Radios: he did like 7 interviews on Global’s radios that were all pre-recorded after two weeks of the song being released and then aired along the following weeks. Before Ron’s Gone Wrong premiered he did two more radio interviews again for Global radios. All radio interviews were done for the UK, no US, Australia or Europe. He did appearances announced for Australian radios that never happened.
TV shows: he did two appearances to promote the song with performances, one in the UK (BBC The One Show) and one in the US (GMA). That’s it!
Concerts: he did exactly one concert where he performed the song and it was Tom’s charity concert in the UK.
Other interviews: for the promotion of the movie he did a few more interviews for other media across Latin America, Europe and India along with another actor from the movie. If you listen to the interviews, the song was rarely mentioned.
Conclusion: of course the song didn’t chart or had major impact when basically nothing was done to promo it! Even with this bare minimum work, the song has good streaming numbers and was able to chart on a Billboard chart due to fans promoting it on Twitter and making listening parties.
So really this is the truth and this is the context you need. Now compare it to what other artists do to promote their songs! Compare it to the ones that are able to chart. Artists work hard to promote their songs and have a team behind them pushing things! When you don’t have anyone what do you really expect?
#liam payne#a little bit of context for people#you don't even look into his situation#most of you jump the gun a#and say shit#actually pay attention

Kiyoshi Yamaya, Toshiko Yonekawa, Kifu Mitsuhashi - Wamono Groove: Shakuhachi & Koto Jazz Funk ’76 - new entry in 180g’s Wamono Series
Following the already classic Wamono A to Z trilogy, we are delighted to present an exceptional collection of jazz funk / rare groove tunes recorded in the mid-seventies at the Nippon Columbia studios by three giants of Japanese music: arranger Kiyoshi Yamaya, koto legend Toshiko Yonekawa and shakuhachi master Kifu Mitsuhashi. Born in 1932 in Tokyo, Kiyoshi Yamaya started his musical career in 1953 when he played in various jazz bands in town. In 1957, Yamaya joined Nobuo Hara’s famous jazz big band Sharps & Flats as a baritone saxophone player and started composing, arranging, and recording for them and other big bands. He became a key jazz figure in Japan in the sixties together with Norio Maeda and Keitaro Miho, both jazz pianists, composers and arrangers, by forming the Modern Jazz Three Association – which aimed at improving the level of Japanese jazz composition and arrangement. In the mid-seventies, his Contemporary Sound Orchestra explored jazz funk fusions with traditional Japanese melodies and instruments such as the shakuhachi, koto, biwa, and shamisen. These works were recorded for a series of panoramic Japanese albums released domestically on Denon and Nippon Columbia, from which the tracks on this compilation are taken from. Toshiko Yonekawa, born 1913 in the city of Himeji, not so far from Osaka, is the eldest daughter of koto and shamisen master Kin’o Yonekawa. She started studying both instruments with her talented father from the age of 3, played in her first concert at 8, and was only 12 years old when she first appeared on national radio. Her unique style of koto playing is widely recognized due to the extreme accuracy of the intonation and rhythm, as well as the unequaled beauty of the instrument’s sonority. After a life decorated with awards and prizes, Toshiko Yonekawa was named a Living National Treasure in 1996. Born in Tokyo in 1950, Kifu Mitsuhashi is a great master of Koto style shakuhachi. After completing the NHK Hōgaku Training Program in 1972, Mitsuhashi became a member of Pro Musica Nipponia, a group of leading composers and top-ranking musicians devoted to performing a wide-ranging repertoire of classical and contemporary compositions from both Japan and the West – in which all music is performed by traditional Japanese musical instruments. Mitsuhashi has toured the world for hundreds of recitals, also as a soloist, and has performed his art with the greatest ensembles such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra and the Berliner Philharmoniker. In 2020, Kifu Mitsuhashi was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun.

Ep 205: Terry Carnation's "Dark Air" and Rich Hatem
“Imagine the universe, compressed on the head of a pin…”
– Scott’s remembrance of a Carl Sagan quote, which, turns out, probably originates from a parody impression of Carl Sagan
Description:
We have a very special guest joining us tonight, metaphysical "astralnaut," philosopher of the liminal, "Pope of the Paranormal," and host of the AM Radio talk show Dark Air, Terry Carnation. Terry first got his start in the paranormal radio genre when unexpectedly thrust into taking over for another show. While working as a late-night rock n' roll Disc Jockey for an FM station in Buffalo, NY, in 1992, Reginald Wilcox, the host of the paranormal call-in show that aired after Terry's slot was mysteriously murdered while Terry was in the bathroom... or so he claims. In his unflappable sense of duty, apparently stronger than his sense of legal obligation, Terry immediately took over the role of consigliere for listeners stupefied by the supernatural. And in Terry's words, "that's how a legend was created." Now, after a three-year hiatus, Terry Carnation returns with a new podcast, also called Dark Air, available starting April 1, 2021, wherever podcasts are given away for free. While you may not have heard of him, there will be something uneasily familiar about his voice and visage. And the audience will come to know his strange power for tearing off the head of disbelief and reaching down deep into our souls to yank out the viscera of our darkest fears and mysteries. Wrapped around our interview with Terry, our good buddy Rich Hatem joins us once again to discuss his latest adventures and projects. We'll also con him into playing our version of a game show, in the spirit of America's NPR radio program Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me! and Britain's Would I Lie to You? We'll tell Rich three outrageous paranormal stories, and he has to guess which one is fake. Please join us for an episode of inscrutable levity.

Rainn Wilson is best known for playing the role of Dwight Schrute on NBC's The Office. Additional film and television credits include Galaxy Quest, Almost Famous, The Rocker, Super, Six Feet Under, Juno, Backstrom, Star Trek Discovery, Thom Pain, The Meg, Mom, Don't Tell a Soul and Utopia. He will also be appearing in the forthcoming podcast Dark Air with Terry Carnation. Wilson co-founded SoulPancake, a digital media company, and the Lide Foundation, an educational initiative in rural Haiti that empowers at-risk women and girls through the arts.
Dark Air with Terry Carnation was created by Rainn Wilson and Aaron Lee and is produced by Thom Harp and Chris Kelly. Dark Air with Terry Carnation is a production of Imperial Mammoth, Audioboom and Kelly&Kelly. Theme music by Marcos Moscat
This episode features the voice talents of Jinous Khjadivian and Dana Davis as the two audience callers.

#FlorenceBPrice was a #mixedrace #American classical composer, pianist, organist & music teacher. Shes the first African-American woman to be recognized as a symphonic composer & first to have a composition played by a major orchestra. Florence Smith was born in Arkansas in 1887, one of 3 children in a mixed-race family who were #AfricanAmerican, #European & #NativeAmerican. Despite rampant racism, the Smith's were well respected. Her father was the only #Black dentist in the city, her mother was a music teacher who helped hone her gifts. Her first performance was at age 4 & she had her first composition published at 11. At 14, she was valedictorian & was accepted into the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. She majored in piano & organ. She began to explore more African American music in her compositions, embracing her African American heritage. Her mom worried that could preclude her success. She encouraged her to pass as #Mexican from "Pueblo, Mexico." She was soon found out but it shielded her from some of the racism that might have beset her otherwise. She graduated with honors with a organ diploma & a teaching certificate. By then she wrote her first string trio & symphony. After teaching at Clark Atlanta, she moved back to Arkansas with her husband but when a local Black man was lynched, they moved to Chicago. She wasnt allowed to perform in Arkansas but the Black musician community in Chicago accepted her. In 1932 she placed first twice at the prestigious Rodman Wanamaker Music Awards winning $750. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra premiered her symphony a year later. She was inducted into the American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers in 1940. Sadly, she still continued to face racism & sexism. But #LangstonHughes & Marian Anderson had her songs performed on the world stage. She died in 1953 but Black & female composers still performed her music especially after many of her works were recovered in Arkansas. In 1964, the Florence B. Price Elementary School was made in her honor. An annual International Florence Price Festival formed & recently in January 2021 she was the BBC Radio 3 Composer of the Week. 🏴🏳️🇺🇸 #whm #ff https://www.instagram.com/p/CM5ZEEMF6Nq/?igshid=29wcl7a9g8su
