Maybe at Jayfeathers trial, they call up Moleflight to give a testimony and his thoughts on whether Jayfeather should go to Starclan, and it's ultimately his testimony that gets jayfeather in.

Like, he complains about jayfeather for quite a while, but concludes that he was ultimately loyal to the clans.

Oh that is beautiful, I'll absolutely do that when Jayf kicks the bucket. But MAN would Molf love watching him squirm. He's been waiting for so long for this.

Can we hear more about Moleflight, the angel that Jay beat up, what does it mean for him to be Jay's guardian angel, how much did he get bullied back in Starclan for losing to a mortal blind person?

There wasn't any bullying for losing to Jayfang. StarClan is terrified of him at that point, this is his second time cheating death and they weren't aware that he could bite an angel.

They weren't aware anyone could bite an angel, actually. The powers of the Three are beyond StarClan, leftover fragments of godly possession imbedded in their reincarnated souls.

It's a force unseen since the Dawn Era, when the founders had to fight One Eye. They have NO IDEA what Jayfeather's fully capable of-- and neither does he!

But anyway, Moleflight.

His mortal name was Molepaw, son of Sorreltail and Brackenfur. He was one of the first deaths in a greencough breakout at the start of BB!Po3. His sister almost died at the end of that outbreak, but he watched Jaypaw beg her to come home instead.

At the time, StarClan just watched, both curious and fearful. They continue to watch him develop and try to uncover the prophecy they're hiding from him, afraid of what him and his siblings mean for the fate of the stars.

Normally, guardian angels are just someone in your life who died while you were young, who has decided to spend lots of time watching over you. Not everybody gets one. Shrewface watches over Squirrelflight, Spottedleaf watches Firestar, etc. Moleflight decided to watch Jaypaw.

Usually a guardian angel likes you. Moleflight does not. They were on good terms while they were alive, but Mole sees himself as someone who wants to keep Jaypaw in check, as he becomes Jayfang, then Jayfeather. He tries to steer him in the "right direction."

Which is away from the truth, away from Rock who lurks in the tunnels, and away from clerichood. He wants to keep him away from magic generally.

As a character, his purpose is as a "voice" of StarClan, reflecting its general consensus and feelings towards Jay. He's a major supporting character through Po3 and OotS.

During the battle of the true eclipse, Jayfeather gets attacked by dark forest cats, and none other than Moleflight saves him

"You better believe that when it's your turn to pass on, I am going to be the one to drag your sorry tail to the dark forest, no demon is going to take that away from me."

Homoerotic rivalry between a snappy and sarcastic press and a super formal yet very petty angel is the height of relationships

Jayfeather like, "If I'd known you'd make the rest of the night so insufferable, I would have left you up there."

Moleflight spits, "It won't be the last time you don't know something, but this is the first time you manage to admit it."

I love the concept of MoleJay toxic yaoi so much. More weirdass chaotic romantic entanglement between the Bracken Four and The Three! The childhood crush of the teen who died young broke the rules of reality to save. His sister! A priest and a member of the heavenly body he's supposed to worship, except the priest has the power and the both of them keep pissing each other off. I named myself after the time I beat your ass in a fight, but that still means my name invokes our connection every time it is spoken. I tried to bring some meaning to my tragic death and afterlife by assigning myself this role of keeping you in line, and what I am outside of you? Just another tragedy? Better to be the man that stands in your way, better to be seen by you as a warden and source of irritation than just the guy who died of sickness and didn't get to walk out of heaven with you.

I think it's especially cool and funny when taking into account how you said that Moleflight's role as a character is "reflecting StarClan's general consensus and feelings towards Jay," because toxic yaoi really does reflect StarClan as a whole's weird love-hate feelings towards Jay. Like damn, this bitch is intimidating and frustrating and every time I talk to him he pisses me off. But. He is kinda cute tho.

Another aspect that crosses my mind a lot is that, when cats die young, StarClan quickly becomes more real than the brief life they had on the mortal plane. For most angels, death feels like a constant, lucid dream... but "cherubs" like Moleflight who received their full names in death didn't live enough life to differentiate it.

So if you think about it, Jayfeather IS his tie to the mortal plane.

Most cherubs quickly throw themselves into cosmic tasks that adult spirits feel strange about, very disconnected from mortality. Attending the founders, maintaining StarClan itself, lathering and polishing the stars that they may shine brighter. And yet, here is Moleflight, clinging to the life he could have known through being Jayfeather's obsessive guardian angel.

Like he doesn't want to move on. Like he wants to have something to miss.

Or maybe it is a bit of jealousy. Molepaw was the first to die in that outbreak and Poppypaw would have been the last. He watched from beyond the veil as Jaypaw pleaded for his sister to please, please come home. He didn't come for him. And without Poppy here with him, Moleflight was alone.

Inescapable. There is no separating them. Jayfeather's very name invokes Moleflight; and Moleflight has made it his mission to serve as a liasion between the stars and Jayfeather. Life and death divides them, and yet, they've never been apart. We are soulmates because we tangle our teeth and claws in each other's souls and refuse to let go.

Will Jayfeather go to starclan? Cause he did fight against them his whole life... and then actually fought them (and didn't tell anybody, didn't get punished), AND had kits, plus a bunch of other things I can't think of right now

I don't know. I don't write ahead or fix arcs until they are done. I only know that certain cats will eventually become Patrons.

StarClan is a shifting entity, heavily influenced by the most recent cats who join it. Yes Jayfeather has been WILDLY disobedient, punching angels, breaking the code, and openly challenging their choices... but he also saved DOZENS of lives by dragging StarClan Angels out of the sky during the Battle of the True Eclipse!

You could even argue he helped doublekill Tigerstar. Without him, Firestar wouldn't have had his final face-off.

He also has been serving ThunderClan faithfully for years. StarClan damned Featherwhisker in spite of that, but since Ashfur they've had to reconsider a lot of things. Skypelt has even insisted on adopting certain Dark Forest warriors, like Ripplestar and his rebels.

So, we just don't know yet. It's going to be a pretty big trial though.

(dif anon) So is Ashfur grooming Shadowsight a plotline you would keep/rework in BB? I'm not so keen on the way canon used it to retcon his epilepsy, but I do think a plotline examining how clerics can be vulnerable to abuse from StarClan spirits is kinda compelling

Shadowsight's epilepsy is staying in BB, the Erins can try and take it away again over my dead body

Yes, that's staying and BB!StarClan was reworked with unfairness in mind.

This time around, I'm considering the idea that Ashfur didn't work completely alone. After the events of Squirrelflight’s Horror, Silverpelt's divisons are starting to crackle the stars.

Skystar and the other more traditional spirits are losing patience with the peace that Fire Alone brings, and the ways that the code has been bent.

They feel that honor is being lost in their descendants.

Even angels disrespect the collective; see how Skypelt has its own heaven? With a demon in its midst? There is blasphemy even in the skies.

Firestar and the more modern pantheon are ferociously defensive of the choices of the living. StarClan exists for them; not the other way around.

Meanwhile, Mousefur has gone missing. Others start to blink out, too. This is causing panic... and Ashfur keeps it quiet that he's the only one who knows where they've gone.

The angels that plan action probably were a small group to begin with, radical spirits. Skystar and Ashfur are two of them, and Ash is the "youngest." So when he comes down to the mortal plane and betrays them, very few other angels knew what had happened.

(I might even have a few angels be doing the various supernatural things in that first book, but slowly, Ashfur is wittling down their numbers until it's just him.)

I'm still working out specifics, but the other angels that Ashfur has consumed are giving him a massive power boost. He can use this to jump between planes freely, and he's able to do some whacky things like weave dreams and pull nightmares out of the Dark Forest.

The most important unique power he has, which he can do ALL on his own once he's absorbed enough starpower, is blast Shadowpaw with a bolt of lightning. The electric current runs through Shadowpaw's brand new scar, giving him a connection to StarClan like he's a little radio tower.

Thing is... when StarClan is blocked off, the only signal he receives is Ashfur's.

So, Shadowpaw.

From the time he was very young, Shadowkit has had an unhealthy relationship to life and death

He watched a lot of cats die before he was old enough to really understand it, and the only one who came back was Heartstar.

His epilepsy was so severe it would have been terminal. He was prepared to die as a kit.

Tawnypelt took him to the Tribe to learn more about treatments, bringing back a method of refining chamomile to manage the convulsions.

When people come back from death, it was to serve "a purpose."

He feels like he needs to be special, like he needs to find the great meaning in his life. The reason why he's still here.

In BB, there can be guardian angels. Cats you knew in life who decide to watch out for you in the afterlife. Moleflight is Jayfeather's, Shrewface is Squirrelflight’s. Ashfur poses as Shadowpaw's.

THAT is how I plan to address my criticism. Ashfur DOES build a very personal, trusting relationship with Shadowpaw, pretending to be the one who's here to give him the destiny he craves. Pretending like he's someone looking out for him.

I actually LIKE how desperate the situation was in-canon and I want to stress how none of this was Shadow's fault, so I also plan to keep that they had very little choice. Shadowpaw trusts his angel completely, and Ashfur coaches him on saying all the right things.

The older Clerics are suspicious, but... what else can they do?

Also, instead of framing this all as something Shadowpaw needs to "atone" for, I'm going to make certain cats unfairly scapegoat him for bringing the Impostor into the forest. Shadowpaw himself agrees with them, blaming himself, but he has to learn it wasn't his fault.

He DIDN'T let anyone down by failing to live up to great expectations, and there's no way he could have known that Ashfur was using him. This never happened before, he always made the choice he thought was right and tried to make up for harm done, and he's not responsible for what his abuser made him do.

I actually want to have him figure out some of this by talking to DF demons, towards the end. Cats faaaar more responsible for what they did in life than him.

Ravenwing in particular, who was also mislead by a rogue StarClan spirit, but... ultimately decided that if StarClan was right in their judgement.

He was told (by Birchface, but he still doesn't know who it was in particular) to make three kittens unsafe by revealing their parentage. His choice killed three innocent children, and lead to the Queen’s Rights.

And StarClan was furious that he'd ever believe they'd want something so CRUEL.

And even if they DID want something so cruel... "Then they wouldn't have been ancestors worth following. And that's why I believe it's right that I'm here."

As a Cleric, he had authority on their behalf. And if they would misuse it through him, he wishes he could have just given it right back.

And Shadowsight's lightbulb goes Ding!

The very last thing Ashfur does in TBC, when the jig is up and he's about to be killed by the Lights in the Mist and a bunch of Demons who have come to defend their home, is swallow a Founder-- Skystar.

He takes the level of a true god, and reaches a nearly undefeatable level of power. Instead of black water, he's so large, malicious, and has a gravitational pull so massive it starts destroying the afterlife. It shatters the purgatory (Meadow of Young Stars) into floating cosmic fragments, and Heaven and Hell are set to collide.

Shadowsight confronts Ashfur, politely explaining that he's, well... done a lot of thinking, and, he doesn't really want what he gave him. "You can, uh, have this back!"

And blasts the lightning from his scar right back at him, like a chain, holding the screeching eldrich horror in place. Every ally he's made, here in the DF, come down from StarClan, and as Lights in the Mist, jump to his side. They can't hold down Ashfur, but they can hold SHADOWSIGHT

While they're all supporting him, Bristlefrost sees the one chance to get rid of him, once and for all. A clear shot. She bolts, pounces, and SHOOTS right into Ashfur like a falling star, knocking them both off the edge of the heaven he destroyed, burning up in orbit with a monster a hundred times her size.

And after that, Shadowsight has to go home and live with this.

He gave up the very connection that made him so special, and now he has to go back to being a Cleric without StarClan.

but the other Clerics accept this. They have to. They were all complicit in the choices that allowed the Impostor to rise.

What Shadowsight learns is... everyone was part of this. From those who made the follies with him, to the supporters and rebels against the impostor, to those who helped him realize his worth, to Bristlefrost who ultimately killed Ashfur.

He is valuable because living is valuable.

Everyone, and everything, matters. All cats have a role to play, and he was never alone.

I want to close him out in BB!TBC on a tea scene that parallels the various points in his life. Others used to prepare his chamomile treatments FOR him, in careful doses, because it is a very serious medicine. Now, at the end, he's the one brewing it.

A fully fledged Cleric, who realizes he's never been alone. Cats who love him were around him the whole time, making his medicine, and they'll love him even after he's given up his powerful gift. So now he's at the stage in his life where HE can make that medicine, share his wisdom with others, and find fulfillment in the skills he's acquired over a hard life brightening.

Okay so a convo made me remember that Icecloud and Foxleap become apprentices 4-5 moons after the three, which means Ferncloud either had four litters so the three could nurse while also having kits so much younger than them, or she just so happens to have milk despite not having kits OR her last litter was really held back. Mostly bringing this up because obviously Squilf and Leaf still can't nurse the three in BB and I was curious if Ferc was still going to nurse them since I know you gave away her last litter or if someone else will do that or if there's a definite answer for this detail yet.

Daisy did it! Her kits were recently weaned, but Sorreltail at the time was nursing FOUR kittens. That's a lot for one suckler to handle, so Daisy would help out which kept her milk coming.

So Daisy has it handled. Ferncloud is still reeling from horrifically losing THREE children in a short period of time. At this moment in time, she didn't feel ready for more.

But, anyway! Foxleap and Icecloud are NOT DustFern kittens in BB. They were shuffled. This is because Ferncloud has waaaay too few surviving kittens while Brightheart and Sorreltail exploded the gene pool. Their kits in BB are;

Ferncloud is the Educator of ThunderClan until her death in TBC. She lives long enough to confront her little brother, Ashfur, who is now from a younger litter. Dustpelt died in the Battle of the True Eclipse, while defending his last litter from Dark Forest warriors.

Additionally, Spotfur and Duststripe (prev. Sorrelstripe) are now Birchfall's kittens, in trade for Dovewing and Ivypool to go into the Firekin family. Toadstep is also still alive; the husband of Lionblaze.

Lilyheart hasn't had any kittens yet, though. I'm still holding on to Leafshade and Honey...something i forgot her name. ThunderClan is already pretty full of cats and she really didn't need to have them so young. Plus, she got seriously traumatized from how Seedpaw died, and she's the sort of mature person to realize she doesn't want to be responsible for young lives when that's still affecting her.

Snowbush, Ambermoon, and Dewnose all still exist, but were adopted to other couples! They're going to show up in other Clans. Cloud and Bright kept a single kitten from each litter.

Foxleap is probably going to be younger than he is in-canon, because I feel like he often gets lost in the massive Po3 Apprentice Generation. So, he'll be somewhere between Po3 and OotS, interacting with Dovewing and Ivypool as they grow up.

Icecloud, also shuffled in age, is also going to end up with a bigger role in AVOS-era stuff, he's transmasc and a fast friend of Alderheart when he joins ThunderClan after being raised by his mother Jessy as a kittypet. Him and Lilyheart make up Alderheart's misfit friend group.

(In general I think ThunderClan feels less bloated if the births are spaced out better.)

So most of the honor titles, like Hallowflight and all the combat/scar based ones, make sense to me, but I believe I remember you mentioning that Crowfeather and Jayfeather were honor titles. What's the "feather" honoring?

Crowfeather requested his to honor Feathertail, the only member of the Sundrown Patrol who never came home. Tallstar was touched by this, and agreed that Crowfoot had earned both a title and the honor of choosing such a personal name.

For Jay I'm still working on it. Leafpool gave it to him in canon because she was dead set on naming her kits after her "true love" but... I don't really like that for BB. I want my telling to have Crowfeather be the emotional one in such a way.

I feel like a better name for Jayfeather would be "Jaydawn" or "Jayrise" in reference to his miraculous healing of Hazeltail, giving her more time on this plane.

BUT I simply want Jayfeather to keep his name and avoid too many frivolous renamings.

I may have him request it. I'm also thinking of changing Molefall (the angel he fought) to Moleflight, and have him request his name from Firestar

He doesn't share the meaning (probably giving the fact that a eurasian jay only has a few bright feathers and he wants to be the most blessed part of the bird), but in his head, it's because he plucked out a feather from Moleflight. Like taking a feather off an angel's wing, because he fought him and BEAT him.

And now he's gonna wear the metaphor like a taunt. Like, "come and get this ass starclan im sick of your shit"
