HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Lili-Babs, Samuel Barber, Carl Betz, the late, great guitarist Chris Bovard, Trevor Burton (The Move), John Cale, Robert Calvert (Hawkwind), Ornette Coleman, Jane Antonia Cornish, Jim Cregan, Jerry Eubanks (Marshall Tucker), Jimmie Fadden, Linda Fiorentino, Martin Fry (ABC), Will Geer, Mickey Gilley, Zakir Hussain, Raul Julia, Kato Kaelin, Laura Lee, Mahler’s 3rd Symphony (1897), Mark Mancina, Jeffrey Osborne, Lloyd Price, Bobby Sands, Thomas Schippers, Bodhi Setchko, Keely Smith, Taeyeon, Chris Thompson (Mannfred Mann’s Earth Band), Diego Torres, Robin Trower, U2’s 1987 JOSHUA TREE album, Gary Walker (Standells, Walker Brothers), Paul Winter, and one of the greatest frontman in rock’n’roll: Mark Lindsay, best known as the singer for Paul Revere & The Raiders. In their major label era of the 1960s and early 70s, PR&TR were one of the tightest and most visible acts in the business. They were the first real rock band signed to Columbia Records, and their garage band energy and declarative stage look pushed back on the British Invasion bands of 1964.
The Raiders kicked out hit after hit in multiple genres including bubblegum, country rock, hard rock, psychedelia, and soul/r’n’b, all with dazzling excellence. They cut the first definitive version of “Louie Louie” before leaving their Oregon base for Los Angeles, joining Terry Melcher (Byrds producer) to launch a prolific and innovative run of great records that still play today: “Just Like Me”, “Kicks” and (recently in the film ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD) “Good Thing,” “Hungry,” “Mr. Sun Mr. Moon,” etc. Between 1965 and 1970, as Dick Clark expanded his jukebox TV empires, he hired PR&TR to host three TV shows. Before The Monkees even twanged “Last Train to Clarksville,” PR&TR had already set the bar for TV bands, gluing pre-adolescent me to the tube with rock’n’roll comedy and ear candy—and there was eye candy for 1000s of girls screaming for teen idol Mark Lindsay. He set the bar as a powerhouse vocalist, able to croon soft sensual pop ballads then flip to paint-peeling bluesy growls.
The Raiders crested in 1971 with the #1 hit “Indian Reservation,” which was a repackaging of a Mark Lindsay solo recording (backed by the Wrecking Crew). As a solo act, Mark was already charting with “Silver Bird” and the hippy girl anthem “Arizona.” He branched into other music business roles, composing jingles and songs for films and TV shows. Legendary author Stephen King expressed his fan-dom with Mark’s 2001 cover of “Treat Her Right,” backed by Los Straitjackets.
Meanwhile, Mark’s career intersected with The Carpenters, The Chesterfield Kings, Eric Johnson, Carla Olson, Gerry Rafferty, Barbra Streisand, Dionne Warwick, and The Monkees, whose orbit led me to cross paths with Mark a couple of times, and he always treated me like a gentleman. I first saw him in concert in 1993, and it was a rock solid show loaded with the hits and deep cuts. Lately he’s been active doing radio shows and webcasts, the latest being “The American Revolution” on Sirius XM.
If I had to pick one Mark Lindsay track, it’s "Too Much Talk.” It blew my mind when I was a kid—my 45 of it cracked but I kept pressing it with my fingers till the vinyl tissued. The fidelity on this clip is a tad distorted, but the visuals speak volumes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EG30aN53GkY Meanwhile, HB and thank you Mark for continuing to inspire and entertain with your skills and talents.

Fic: Spontaneous Combustion
Tan Hands and Tan Lines SmuttySmooty Word Challenge 2021: quick
Fandom/Pairing: Glee/Klaine
Words: ~1450 words
Rating: Teen and up
Summary: Kurt takes his new companion to the barber.
I’m belatedly going through the prompts for The Tan Hands and Tan Lines Summer Event 2021 to flesh out my Mormon!Klaine universe. This one takes place very early in their mission together, after I Like to Look for Rainbows and before Indispensable.
My Mormon!Klaine Masterpost.
Notes: Examples of approved hair styles for male LDS missionaries. If you can’t imagine Kurt or Blaine with hair that short, don’t worry; I can’t either. If you have any questions or typo corrections, feel free to use my ask box!
-------
Kurt loved going to Herr Haar, the barbershop down the street from their apartment. Not so much for the haircut—the missionary dress code required their hair to be kept almost military short, and while Herr Stolz left a little length in the front so Kurt could hold onto a semblance of bangs to brush to the side or comb back, he nonetheless walked out feeling like his scalp had been denuded.
What he loved was the ritual of it, and the physicality: the hand brushing through his hair, the light touches behind his ears, the indulgent warmth of the towel on his face, the careful finger pulling his skin taught in preparation for the razor.
Was it weird that the straight razor was Kurt’s favorite part? It should be frightening to have someone hold a blade to your throat. With the number of things that kept Kurt awake at night, that should certainly be one of them. But somehow, in this one situation, Kurt’s vulnerability was what made it so enjoyable. It was the one place in his life where he could just sink into vulnerability without resistance. Where he managed to hand over his trust, completely and unreservedly, to another human being. To let them touch him and care for him, without fear of being wounded.
Next to him, Kurt could hear Elder Anderson sighing unreservedly. Apparently he enjoyed it, too.
“Wow, elder. You look incredible!” Elder Anderson effused later as Herr Stolz spun Kurt around in the chair with a mirror in his hand for a full-circle inspection. “Not that you didn't before. But I wasn't sure what you would look like with your hair shorter, and it looks just as good. You have amazing cheekbones, you know that? The cut really brings them out.” Elder Anderson squinted his eyes. “Did Herr Stolz do your eyebrows?”
“No,” said a flustered Kurt.
“Huh. They look great.” Elder Anderson turned away at the instruction of his own barber, who was still working on the back of his head. There was no product in Elder Anderson’s hair yet, leaving it delightfully curly as the barber’s hands snipped and shaped it. Kurt momentarily wished those hands were his own.
“That new companion of yours is quite the talker, isn’t he?” Herr Stolz said a minute later in gruff, Bavarian-inflected German, holding a comb to the back of Kurt’s neck and snipping down the final wild strands of a cowlick there. “What was he saying this time?”
“Sorry. Was he speaking English? I can tell him not to. He was just impressed with your barbering skills.”
“He ought to be. I’ve been doing this for forty years. Drives me crazy to see the home haircuts your new guys walk in with sometimes. This one wasn't too bad, but there’s a reason professionals exist.”
“Forty years? Really?” That would have been 1974. The year The Way We Werecame out and Barbra Streisand began her curly phase. Almost twice as long ago as Kurt had been alive. In Kurt’s mind, Herr Stolz had always seemed a bit ageless—one of those guys who got a little more salt and pepper in their hair from year to year, like George Clooney or Brad Pitt, but never looked any worse for the wear. “I wouldn’t have guessed you were that old.”
Herr Stolz laughed. “I'm only fifty-seven. I'm not ancient.”
Fifty-seven was older than Kurt’s dad, but he thought it best not to argue. And Herr Stolz was more handsome than Kurt’s dad. Kurt hoped he would age more like Herr Stolz.
Kurt waited at the front while Elder Anderson’s hair was shaped and pomaded, declining both the coffee and the booze he was offered as he waited. The barber had a gentler hand with the pomade than Elder Anderson did at home, using it to bring out the body in his hair rather than subdue it into submission—making him more akin to a young Tony Curtis than a Cary Grant. When Elder Anderson rose out of the chair, it appeared to Kurt that he now had more hair than he'd come in with.
“So?” Elder Anderson asked, sashaying toward his companion. “What do you think?”
It would be inaccurate to say Elder Anderson looked better than he had before, but he did look different, and that was exciting in its own way—the way that watching a flower unfold in springtime was exciting, because every time you thought the bud had reached the height of its beauty, you would return the next day and find it in a new stage of unfolding and somehow as breathtaking as it had been the day before.
“Not bad,” Kurt said in the understatement of the year.
“Thank you,” Elder Anderson said. “Not that I had much to do with it.” He turned and offered effusive praise to his barber, who looked at him like he was a certifiable loon, but a charming one and more or less harmless.
“What do you call your hair color, anyway?” Elder Anderson asked later as they sat on a bench a few blocks down from the barber, scarfing down the sandwiches they’d brought from home. They had to make it quick, since they’d used most of their lunch hour for the haircuts.
“Brown?” Kurt said.
“No. I thought it was brown, but it's not brown like mine. Right now in the sun, it looks almost red. Not red like carrots or Gillian Anderson in The X-Files days. But like … cherry wood. Or red velvet cake. Or a stack of kindling with little red embers.” Elder Anderson raised a hand as if about to touch it, then caught himself. “Sorry. I was one of those kids who could never keep their hands out of anything interesting. I can't tell you how many times I stuck my fingers in candle flames just because they were pretty.”
“Ow.”
“Oh, it's not bad if you do it really quick. The key is making sure your fingers are totally dry.” Elder Anderson seemed to think better of what he was saying and looked sheepishly down at his feet. “Not that I do that anymore. It was just a cheap thrill when I was younger and bored at dinner parties and the adults were ignoring the kids’ table.”
Kurt swallowed the last of his sandwich. He understood the need for cheap thrills. “You can touch my hair, if you want. It won’t burn.”
“Really? You sure?”
“That it won't burn?”
“No, I meant —oh, fine.” Elder Anderson set his sandwich down in his lap, wiped his hands neatly on his napkin, and lifted his hand just above Kurt’s ear. His fingers landed softly, then stroked back with the grain of Kurt’s hair.
Kurt suppressed a sigh, but he couldn't suppress the shiver that traveled down his spine.
Elder Anderson gazed at Kurt’s hair like he was watching a kaleidoscope or a sunset. His lips parted a little, and the corners of his mouth turned up a little, like he was experiencing a small miracle. “Oh, wow. It feels just like I imagined. Only better.” Elder Anderson ran his fingers through Kurt’s almost nonexistent bangs as if it were the most natural thing in the world to do, like people just did that with their friends every day.
Kurt had promised that his hair wouldn't burn, but now he wasn't so sure. He felt like his whole self was on the verge of spontaneously combusting. He picked up his bottle of water and Elder Anderson, thank goodness, took that as a signal to pull his hands back to the half-eaten sandwich on his lap. Kurt took a long swallow of water.
“Do you like it like this, or do you like it longer?” Elder Anderon asked.
“Longer,” Kurt said. “Not long long. But enough that I can actually do something with it. On P-day, I can show you pictures of what it looked like in the outside world.”
What on earth was Kurt saying? No missionary companion had ever shown anything more than a polite interest in looking at his photos from home. Everybody was too busy missing their own lives to care about the lost identities of others.
But Elder Anderson lit up. “I would love that! And I'll show you mine. Not that my hair looked that much different pre-mission. I've always been a fan of hair gel. But I can show you my cats, if you wanna see them. They’re the cutest. But I know not everyone’s into cats.”
Kurt shrugged. “If you love them, I want to learn all about them.”
Elder Anderson looked genuinely touched. “You mean that, don't you?”
Kurt nodded.
Elder Anderson bumped shoulders with him. “Best companion ever.”

Note
While PAs may like to rag on their previous “bosses”, before you jump on that bandwagon of malcontents, try and understand the big picture and underlying reasons for some of the things celebrities request and posters post.
Water is obviously essential to performers and many people, myself included, have a preference about which brand as they don’t all taste the same. But the temperature of water makes a BIG difference to singers as cold water tightens the vocal cords and can significantly change voice control and performance, whether it’s a modulated voice needed for an acting role, a singing performance or a speech. So Beyoncé requests her case of Aquafina bottles 1/2 of them to be chilled and 1/2 of them to be at 69.8 F. Mariah wants her water at 75 F. Adele, Jay Z, Will Ferrell, Katy Perry and so many others make very specific water requests with good reason. Apparently JL has that good sense as a singer and actor too.
Aromatic oils or scented candles are also quite a common request as ambiance and surroundings in dressing or hotel rooms help focus and create a calm space for a performer. Rihanna, Adele, Gaga many more all request scented candles, often along with very specific (often white) furnishings and draperies to harmonize them to their unfamiliar and often times harsh looking surroundings. (think arena locker rooms as dressing rooms) Feng Shui if you will. Vanilla and flowery scents are most common and men in particular derive feelings of happiness from vanilla. This oil also reduces infection, inflammation and depression. Some say this also puts one in the mood so perhaps these requests are for more personal activities ?
And special diets? What celebrity is NOT on a special diet ? JL is a very healthy eater and his being primarily vegan is no secret or even a culinary challenge these days. While he always requests fruit be nearby pretty much everywhere he goes he is not looking for the exotic meal anywhere and largely chooses places he knows can meet his fairly simple tastes. Don’t imply fussiness or a hissy fit because of some undescribed hypothetical or random what if event. Now Tom Cruise, who demanded that a port side boutique hotel empty its restaurant so he could have a solitary lunch is diva extreme. (they refused and gave him a take out platter to go eat on his yacht instead). 🤣👍🏻 Then there’s the alcohol and drinks — and heaven forgive one gets THAT wrong: Fortunately Leto himself does not drink alcohol. But, Paris - Grey Goose, Gaga: - white wine and a smoothie station, Will Ferrell-Guinness, JayZ - Red Bull, Adele - red wine, Mariah - chardonnay and of course Kayne with his alcohol slushie machine and bar with Patron Silver, Hennessy, Absolute and Heineken.
As for clothing, this is just so very important to entertainers and while there are different ways celebrities handle these needs at events and some even have very specific staff just for this responsibility, in a pinch or where a celebrity has lesser wardrobe needs, say JL compared to Gaga, Bey or Riri, if there are needs or urgencies it so IS the PAs job to handle these situations so to them I say stop bitching and do the job you are being paid for. Hustle a little, make some phone calls and messenger the goods and get over yourself.
So many of these folks have weird habits and requests, some reasonable and some just way out there and that is just the life of a PA. It’s what you signed on for. So Cher wants her wig room, likes to drink from black cups and blow her nose into aloe tissues. Streisand likes to pee on rose petals and wipe with beige toilet paper. Bieber sanitizes his doorknobs every two hours (Covid related), Kanye wants his barber chair, shower shoes, lip balm and tooth picks, Jay Z wants his 7 dressing rooms at 72 F and Jennifer Anniston loves her very specific Penelope Pink lipstick. Rihanna wants white leafless tulips or lillies, seven electrical outlets, blue drapes and animal print rugs. But absolutely NO animal print or leather anything for Sir Paul McCartney but please, only lillies, special light bulbs and seven evenly leafed green potted plants for him ! Make sure Top Gun Tom has his 50 custom g-string thongs when he is shooting action scenes 🤭, an unnamed actor has his life-size cut out of himself in his dressing room and Katy has her 45 pages of requests met before each of her performances…
Americans do not understand or respect the personal service industry as Europeans do. PAs need to understand that they are there to serve and support AND must understand the industry expectations and realities of the entertainment business before they take the job. It is not easy nor is it glamorous. So many PAs are not the right fit to support talent and let them shine, deriving their personal satisfaction in other ways. I am not suggesting that a PA who is not appreciated or is mistreated should not speak up as anyone should with any job but one should be sure they are in this role for the right reasons. And remember, most people who love their job do not join sm sites to write lovely stories. Haters love to hate and mostly that’s why you see these negative stories. These folks were probably in the wrong job to begin with. So, as divas go, Jared Leto’s lifestyle and requests are way down towards the bottom of the demanding list.
Well his bitch-ass ATTITUDE AND LACK OF MANNERS certainly are not at the bottom of any lists - or maybe they are, depending on how you look at the list. 🙄

Lin-Manuel Miranda, Barbra Streisand And More Pay Tribute To Iconic Lyricist Stephen Sondheim After His Death
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Barbra Streisand And More Pay Tribute To Iconic Lyricist Stephen Sondheim After His Death
On Friday, the world lost a legend in Stephen Sondheim, who died at the age of 91 in his Roxbury, Connecticut home. Sondheim was an all-time great lyricist and composer, who was famous for his prolific work in theatre for musicals such as West Side Story, Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Following the loss, it was instantly clear how much he touched the lives of…

Morgan Stanley, ran a TV commercial in which a scruffy tow-truck driver picks up a prosperous-looking executive. Spotting a photo of a tropical beachfront posted on the dashboard, the executive asks, “Vacation?” “Actually,” replies the driver, “that’s my home.” Taken aback, the suit says, “Looks like an island.” With quiet triumph, the driver answers, “Technically, it’s a country.”
The propaganda went further. Online trading would take no work and require no thought. A television ad from Ameritrade, the online broker, showed two housewives just back from jogging; one logs on to her computer, clicks the mouse a few times, and exults, “I think I just made about $1,700!” In a TV commercial for the Waterhouse broker- age firm, someone asked basketball coach Phil Jackson, “You know anything about the trade?” His answer: “I’m going to make it right now.” (How many games would Jackson’s NBA teams have won if he had brought that philosophy to courtside? Somehow, knowing noth- ing about the other team, but saying, “I’m ready to play them right now,” doesn’t sound like a championship formula.)
By 1999 at least six million people were trading online—and roughly a tenth of them were “day trading,” using the Internet to buy and sell stocks at lightning speed. Everyone from showbiz diva Barbra Streisand to Nicholas Birbas, a 25-year-old former waiter in Queens, New York, was flinging stocks around like live coals. “Before,” scoffed Birbas, “I was investing for the long term and I found out that it was not smart.” Now, Birbas traded stocks up to 10 times a day and expected to earn $100,000 in a year. “I can’t stand to see red in my profit-or-loss column,” Streisand shuddered in an interview with Fortune. “I’m Taurus the bull, so I react to red. If I see red, I sell my stocks quickly.”
By pouring continuous data about stocks into bars and barber- shops, kitchens and cafés, taxicabs and truck stops, financial web- sites and financial TV turned the stock market into a nonstop national video game. The public felt more knowledgeable about the markets than ever before. Unfortunately, while people were drowning in data, knowledge was nowhere to be found.
