Texas Hill Country home inspired by traditional Japanese architecture
Texas Hill Country home inspired by traditional Japanese architecture
This modern home was designed by Baldridge Architects in collaboration with Acero Construction, located in the Barton Hills neighborhood of Austin, Texas. Created for a family of four, the dwelling is nestled in a cul-de-sac surrounded by woods, opening to views over a protected greenbelt that runs from downtown through the southern part of the city. Taking cues from this remarkable site, the…

Gray Bridge Event Venue is one of those locations that feels like it’s on another planet and yet right in town all at the same time.
As you approach the venue, the road is lined with trees that create a natural tunnel. Obviously, I visited in June, but I can just imagine how incredible this must look in the fall when the leaves turn color.
Then, as you walk through the geometric tunnel onto the main part of the grounds, you realize that “hidden gem” is truly what this venue is. From stunning private ponds complete with fountains (yes plural) – one of which is powered by a natural spring – a ceremony space with amphitheater and dock, and a modern romantically lit reception space that the owners have created specifically with ambiance in mind, this venue has it all. Their getting ready spaces are also designed well, with the bridal suite even set for in-suite boudoir sessions. There is a trail through the backwoods behind the ceremony pond that they’ve recently re-done with a wooden walkway. The landscaping is impeccable. When I visited, the iconic bridge was under construction, but should be finished in just a few days.
I definitely plan on visiting again soon and will update this post with photos from that trip, as these were just a few that I took during an engagement session on the property. Keep an eye out for that update!
Bottom line – if you’re venue hunting in Snohomish County or the Seattle area, add this one to your list.

From Gray Bridge: “Imagine your wedding at the edge of a pond–with a fountain and gray bridge behind you. The forest rises up behind your guests while the Cascade foothills rise up behind you and your partner. You are about to officially begin your lives together in the most beautiful, sophisticated, private, and uniquely-you location you can imagine. Welcome to Gray Bridge.
We want to be a part of the story of your lives together. A little bit of story-book fantasy, a bit of glamour, a lot of nature, and a focus and reflection of you and how special this day is–that is what we are at Gray Bridge. Our venue is unique–like you are–and we strive to Gray Bridge into a space that is unlike any other where your unique specialness and the importance of your commitment together is reflected in a space that is also special and important. Come celebrate with us!
Castle Island In the late 70’s, the Baldridge family purchased 40 acres in Sultan and started building their dream house. The site was pristine: private, full of natural beauty, an ideal setting to raise a family and build a dream. Dick Baldridge was a visionary in how he created his homesite. He located the house so that it is essentially surrounded by a moat. Behind the house is the toe of a hill with the dense forest rising high above, a wetland and stream at the base of the hill lines the rear of the house with water. In front of the homesite, he carved out ponds from some existing depressions, he built a driveway between the ponds and between the ponds and the wetland an island was made. Architect Michael Gemza designed the house for Dick, Lola and their girls Pam and Sue.
Dick Baldridge had a vision and heavy equipment. After he carved out the ponds, he tapped a natural spring about 250 feet up the forested hillside. He built a weir, buried a culvert and collected water bubbling out of the mountainside and sent it into the west pond. The fountain in the west pond is coming from that culvert about 250’ up the hill. The drop pushes the water through the pipe at a continuous rate year round. The water in the ponds is crystal clear because it is continually being circulated from the spring into the west pond, overflows into the east pond, and then into the wetland behind the house. The ponds are about 55 degrees and full of breeding trout, otter, muskrat, seasonal waterfowl, and feeding birds.
We’ve named locations on the property for their original design. The “pool deck” had a huge, deep, and frog-filled swimming pool when we bought the property. The paved area under the tent is “the helipad” where, according to the real estate listing, the property is only 15 minutes by helicopter to Seattle! The area above the amphitheater is the “putting green”. The Baldridge property had a 3 hole golf course where our horse pastures are now located.
We bought the property, now 15 acres, in 2017. It had been sold a few times since the original owner and had been neglected for a number of years. We gutted, cleaned, pruned, planted and painted. We built a barn, filled in the pool, repaired the ponds, patched the driveway, and fell in love with this place. We feel like caretakers of the most beautiful space in the world.
As a wedding venue, we get to share the uniqueness and beauty of our gorgeous setting with wedding couples as they begin their married life together! We want to share our space with others who love the mountain views, the sound of running water, the shade of the forest, and the magnificent architecture and backdrop that makes up the Gray Bridge Venue! Do you want to get married in a place that is sophisticated while full of natural beauty? Do you want a wedding venue that is unique and as special as you are? Are you looking to marry at a place that says “my wedding is important”? Gray Bridge is the place where those memories are made. Please join us!”

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina, Hawaii

Four Seasons Resort Oahu at Ko Olina
October 13, 2021
Design: de Reus Architects
Location: Ko Olina, Oahu, Hawaii, Central Pacific, United States of America
Photos by Andrea Brizzi
Four Seasons Resort Oahu, Ko Olina, Hawaii
The assignment—a $100 million transformation and rebranding of an aging hotel into a five-star Four Seasons Resort in Oahu, Hawaii. Encompassing architecture, interior design, landscape, pools, and signage, the former 617,906-square-foot JW Marriott, originally designed by Edward Killingsworth in 1993, the de Reus team lead the massive overhaul.
The result is a fully repositioned, one-of-a-kind luxury experience for guests and a valuable holding for the developer and investors—all delivered on a fast-track schedule to meet the hoteliers targeted opening.
While the extant hotel had a durable and expressive structure and graciously sized guest rooms, it suffered from inadequate and tired amenities, neglected finishes, and mediocre landscaping, furniture, and fixtures. The refresh was extensive.
It called for refurbishing 358 guest accommodations (including 52 suites), reworking all four restaurants, and updating the existing circular pool. Refurbished guest rooms strike a balance between signature Four Seasons’ quality and luxury Hawai’ian hospitality. Banana bark wall coverings, jute-inspired carpets, and an art program produced by renowned local artists work together to form the rooms’ tropical modern elegance.
The entire arrival experience, beginning at the street and continuing through to the lobby, was enhanced. Wood detailing was added to the entry and the seventeen-story atrium to enrich the overall drama of the space and to bring a gracious elegance to the experience.
Tahitian-inspired ki’i, or wooden sculptures, were custom designed to greet guests upon arrival. The reception area, which previously blocked views from the lobby to the ocean, was relocated to a discreet location on the side of the lobby with new concierge pods.
In addition to remodeling existing areas, de Reus Architects led the design of many new structures. These include a coffee lounge, two outdoor dining terraces, an adult pool and a family pool, and spa-treatment pavilions.
The design team removed a large lobby wall and replaced it with the Hokulea Bar, as well as designed the adjacent Kohola Deck, which was built on an existing roof, seamlessly integrating with the architectural aesthetic.
A new hotel wedding chapel was designed and constructed with coral stone walls and western red cedar trusses; its Arts and Crafts aesthetic draws inspiration from the architectural style of Hawai’i’s turn-of-the-century sensibilities. New landscaping, including the addition of a large muliwai (estuary) garden, more accurately reflects the region.
Respectfully working within the bones of a Killingsworth-designed classic, the design team worked together to create a new standard of luxury for Oahu’s first Four Seasons–branded resort.

Custom-Built Austin Home Offers SoCal Style in the Lone Star State
realtor.com
This custom-built beauty in Austin, TX, is a genuine artist’s abode with a great mixture of substance and style. Priced at a cool $2.75 million, this work of art will be a perfect addition for an astute buyer settling in the Lone Star State.
Known for its wide variety of housing stock, Texas’ capital city has a few Mid-Century Modern abodes dotting the landscape. However, one couple devised their own twist on the style with a custom-designed home on the city’s south side.
Located in the eclectic and popular Zilker neighborhood, the home also offers a distinct SoCal vibe.

So it’s no surprise to find owners Kristen and Joe Cole are designers and art collectors who hail from Los Angeles. Their eclectic preferences were brought to life by Burton Baldridge of Baldridge Architects. The final product has been featured in Architectural Digest magazine and Texas Monthly magazine.
As described in Texas Monthly, the house “marries [the Coles’] East and West Coast sensibilities with a decidedly Texas twist.” Unsuspecting Austin residents might think the 3,302-square-foot property is just another humble home—the exterior of the home is fashioned in “unassuming charcoal brick,” according to Architectural Design.
The home’s signature L shape was designed to preserve the lot’s mature oak trees, which provide significant shade during the hot Austin summers. There’s also a small lap pool for escaping the three-digit temperatures.

Living room

The interior of the home is infused with splashes of vibrant color and rich textures, and the Coles’ extensive art collection currently hangs throughout. Each room has its own unique style, offering an atmosphere for every mood.
The kitchen is appointed with stainless-steel appliances, white and gray marble countertops, and a swath of honey maple cabinetry. It opens to the airy dining room and living room, which are separated by a beautiful stone fireplace. More honey maple built-in bookshelves and cabinets are dotted throughout these two rooms.
The living room is put together like an elegant puzzle, with a built-in, L-shaped couch and a built-in bookshelf running the length of the wall. It begs for an owner to sit a spell and relax.
The home has four bedrooms and 3.5 baths, all with clean lines and colorful touches.
And if you think a mix of terrazzo, marble, polished chrome, stone, and ceramic would create a mismatched finish, Baldridge—in conjunction with the Coles’ keen eye for detail—found a way to make it all work seamlessly. It’s all aces in Austin.

Decorate With Red to Give Your Space a High-Design Vibe
Red never goes out of style, although different tones of the color will be more popular for a while. A deep, rich red is the “it” color of the moment and we’ve got some great ideas on how you can decorate with this rich, sumptuous hue.
Also known as brick, merlot, spice, chili, ruby or deep red, this red is spicy, exotic and vibrant. It’s fairly neutral so you can pair the newest red with greys, chocolates, tans or warmer colors. Here are 24 ideas on how you can decorate with red for a high-design look that’s both inviting and intimate.
How to decorate with red furnishings and accessories
The fastest way to infuse red into your environment is by adding a few accessories like new bedding, throw pillows, a throw blanket, rugs, vases and wall art. Feeling a bit bolder? Nothing is sexier than a deep red velvet sofa.
If you’re on a limited budget and don’t want to make permanent color changes, go with small but bold red accessories like throw pillows or a rug. Image: Radform

Liven up neutrals like greys and tans by adding accessories like this cubist rug and deep red throw pillows. Image: In Unison Design
The designer of this room wanted to add symmetry with the red accessories. The red accents were placed in pairs, while the single pillow and red Venetian glass lamp were centered in the room. Image: Luce Vetro
For a fresh new way to decorate with red, pair the sexy color with deep chocolate brown. Image: House Beautiful

Deep red paint ideas
Red is an intense color. Painting an entire room in the shade may feel a bit too much, but a carefully chosen wall or architecture detail in a deep rich red tone can work. Here are some beautiful red paint ideas.

Rich red tiles
If you want to add rich texture to a space or accent wall, a red tile is the perfect addition. If the foundation of your room is white, red tiles can also add a modern feel to the space.

This contemporary white bathroom felt a little cold and stark before adding this stunning red glass mosaic tile. Image: Famosa Tile
Decorating with red in the kitchen
Red in the kitchen may be the most natural place for the color. That’s because some say the color red can increase your appetite. You can decorate with red by adding a red backsplash, adding red barstools or painting your cabinets or kitchen island in red.

High gloss red cabinets highlight the rich hue well and also reflect light to maintain a bright and airy kitchen. Image: Roselind Wilson Design
When decorating with red, add the color in at least 2 or 3 ways throughout the kitchen. Image: Nicholas Anthony
Low maintenance industrial bar stools in red add a vibrant and family-friendly feeling to a minimalist white kitchen. Notice how the red is sprinkled throughout the kitchen as well as out into the sunroom. Image: Lynsey Jane Designs
While the kitchen backsplash is a good place to add red, the side panels of the island are an original way to include the color. Image: Baldridge Architects
Grey, black, white and brown are natural mates for a deep, rich red, like this kitchen shows. Image: Area
Red should be part of your home in one form or another. The invigorating color adds a feeling of good energy to any room. Depending on how much you like the color, you can add a few small touches or create full rooms featuring red. Where would you add red in your home? Let us know in the comments.
