Back to Square One (01)

Panic rang throughout my body as I shot awake to the sound of my alarm blaring. I groaned and covered my head with my pillow for a moment before begrudgingly slamming the off button. It was summer vacation, and I somehow forgot to turn off my alarm for my 8am class. Hoping to get another hour or two of sleep, I shut my eyes again. After a few minutes, though, I decided that wasn't happening. I slithered out of bed and threw on a plain t-shirt and a pair of jeans, grumbling to myself about how this was such bullshit as I trudged down the stairs into the kitchen.

Believe me, I was glad to be home from the summer, but it was going to be exhausting to see... some people. I definitely had some close friends, but I was far from a popular childhood friend for a lot of these people. What can I say, filling people with rage is just one of my talents. It's a bit ridiculous that people are still mad over a game we played in the fourth grade, but oh well. What can you do?

I pulled a chair out from under the table, cringing at the sound it made against the floor. I pulled out my phone and glanced at the time, sighing when I saw it was still only 7:45 in the morning. I opened my texts and decided the most appropriate action for the moment was to be an absolute menace to my brother.

And with that, I could hear my brother's feet thumping down the stairs with excitement as he ran into the kitchen. I will never understand how he can go from asleep to full energy in under a minute. I'm still not even fully awake yet when he pulls out a chair and plops down and looks at me.

"Okay, so we need a plan. What do we want, how are we waking him up, wha'"

"You aren't making the plan," I cut him off. "You're still on plan probation, bozo."

He frowned at me and groaned. "Y/N," he whined. "That was, what, over ten years ago? You're still mad about that?"

"Yes. Anyways... how are we feeling about McDonalds? And I'll just ask dad, you stay down here. We both know he's more likely to say yes to me. Simply because you suck," I laughed, standing up to begin up toward our father's room.

"You're so mean, I don't understand how we're related... And McDonalds is fine I guess."

"Okay, perfect!" I flashed Clyde a quick grin and ran up the stairs and gently knocked on the closed door before pushing it open slowly.

"What do you want," my dad asked. He hasn't been a morning person in years, so I needed to tread this moment carefully. I gently walked closer to the bed where he was sitting up, watching me with a blank expression on his face.

"You know you're a great dad, right? And I missed you when I was away at college for so long..." I began.

"Y/N. What do you want," he asked again, still expressionless.

"Do you think... That maybe you could, I don't know... Get some McDonalds for me and Clyde? I mean, I made the deans list this semester, and Clyde didn't flunk out!"

The man sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose as he swung his legs out of the bed and stood up. "Fine. Just this time, though. There is nothing stopping either of you from getting jobs, you know," he groaned. "You could always get your own food."

"Thank you, dad! You're the best," I shouted, heading back down to the kitchen to update my brother on my success.

I grinned at him and simply stated, "I told you I was his favorite."
