Au where it turns out that Kai and Nya inherited both elemental powers from their parents, they can use eachother’s as well as their own. Please imagine this with me

Kai trying to learn how to use water elemental powers:

issues resurface of his fear of water, ignore my inability to stop thinking about lavashipping (tho yall can interpret it as platonic if u dont vibe with it) but maybe we’d get a moment of him and Cole both being like that, because of Kai’s lack of ability to swim, and Cole, having been a ghost for so long, is now afraid of water seeing as it used to be able to kill him just by touching it. Maybe the first time Kai ever uses the water elemental powers is to protect him, like someone tries to help Cole get over his fear of water, probably Jay. Kai, after seeing him look scared, instinctively used his water powers to get it away from him. Maybe a while after that, Zane would take them to see how long they could hold their breath underwater, like when he did that himself in his pilot season backstory and season 1, and Kai was able to use his water abilities to create an air-bubble to stop him from not being able to breathe, and in doing so, he discovered that being able to control the water made things a lot easier, and as he got better at it, his fear of it lessened.

Nya trying to learn how to use fire elemental powers :

similar struggles to season 5 learning water, or season 11 (part 2) learning ice. Its just so different, and it requires a totally different mindset. By comparison to water and ice, Nya finds fire to be irrational and overall just really difficult. There’d be a fun bonding scene where the smith siblings (including Lloyd, theyre an honourary member of smith siblings) just go do dumb and reckless stuff for fun and to help her get in the right mentality. The first time she uses her fire powers is in a training session, she was having an off day and things weren’t going right, Kai had already used his water abilities once or twice and was trying to redo it to show Zane and Lloyd. She was sparring with Jay and Cole, and they were clearly distracted and looking at what Kai was doing. Her s5 fear of failure kicked in and she accidentally set fire to the monestary (not as bad as that one time it got burned down, about as bad as s1 episode 1 Kai did).

A few other things about the au:

-the two of them totally had a bet about who could become a master of each element first. They still have arguments about who won, because Kai used water powers first, but Nya was able to do it controlled/on command first.

-They got a bit further in learning ice abilities as well, Nya was able to show Kai what she had already learnt, and Kai was suprisingly good at controlling tempurture of water because of so much practice with fire. With help from Zane, they were able to do some stuff with ice, though of course they were never as good at it as he was. It always felt unnatural to them, in the same way it would be to try and write with a non-dominant hand (if you’re not ambidextrous).

-Nya’s flames do that thing that azula from avatar the last airbender’s do where theyre bright blue.

-Kai doesn’t just get over his issues with water and instead usually uses those powers to keep it the heck away from him, and maybe to create a bubble of air to breathe underwater if he ever needs to be near it, because he still isnt very good at swimming and drowning doesn’t sound like fun to him.

-The first time They ever tried to use their new powers as a fighting technique, Kai accidentally combined the two and made steam, which isnt so helpful when you’re sparring Jay, master of lightning, and water conducts lightning, so even if Jay cant see, he can just electrocute the air and it’d hit. Otherwise, it could be useful to stop an opponent from seeing. Nya created a circle of fire arround herself, which, despite being kinda dangerous to her as in she could get burnt by her own flames and shes kinda trapped in it, could definitely be good for stalling or as a defence.

-we’d also get some moments of Zane trying to learn water and Jay trying to learn fire, Lloyd and Cole are just kinda sat there like :/

the state of the world:

azula accidentally electrocutes iroh to death in her first appearance

zuko runs away crying (and is never redeemed), unable to think in that moment

zuko runs into june and teams up with her to try and kill azula

it doesn't work

azula very quickly begins to go off the rails, haunted by the act of murdering her own uncle, even if it was in the heat of the moment and unintentional

zuko fights azula, who is barely holding herself together, for the right to the throne in the finale - and wins

azula is locked up

he interrupts aang's fight with ozai and captures ozai, but aang is able to escape

aang dies a decade later

ozai is publicly executed by zuko, new reigning fire lord

after four long & hard years in prison zuko sends azula to work in the army in the earth kingdom

azula quickly rises through the ranks and zuko stations her in ba sing se, threatening her to keep her head down

she staged her own death and found a living in the lower rings of ba sing se

rebellion is stirring amongst the poor and word has it there is a new avatar: korra
