Are there any skincare blogs you like? Or how do you decide on your skincare products?
Actually, there aren’t really any blogs I especially love for skincare specifically. There are a few articles/posts I like, but no blog as a whole. I think that skincare blogs and influencers are interesting only if skincare is a real hobby for you—I just don’t feel the same way about skincare as I do about, say, makeup or jewellery. For me, I like to do proper and intense research on skincare products and dermatological concepts, find what works for me, and stick to it, so for this reason I suppose blogs just don’t really pique my interest in the same way.
I like to stay on top of the latest product development and research in the skincare world, though—I try to keep up with what’s new and, if I think it’s really worthwhile, then I’ll trial incorporating it into my own routine and see how I go. Here are some of the resources I use to stay informed about research and skincare trends:
Dermatological journals. I’m not a medical student, but since my university gives me access to pretty much any peer-reviewed journal in the world, I enjoy using that privilege for my own personal research interests as well as my degree. I check all the latest abstracts in JAMA, the BJD, and the American Journal of Clinical Dermatology, and if I find an article that catches my eye, then I read it in full and make notes.
Ingredient directories. These are helpful for finding the ingredients of certain products (not always listed on their websites!) and explaining the purpose and effects of specific ingredients, and I use them mostly when I’m researching a specific product. I like INCI for ingredients lists and basic breakdowns, and Paula’s Choice dictionary for more detailed explanations.
Reddit. Most skincare subreddits are just full of people wanting to clear their acne, and the same old recommendations over and over again, but there are a couple dominated by enthusiasts which are more interesting and allow me to quickly identify which brands and ingredients are currently trending, especially in the US. r/AsianBeauty, r/SkincareAddictionLux, and r/scacjdiscussion are all quite helpful, although you do sometimes have to wade through a lot of rubbish to find the useful bits.
A few choice influencers. I’m not a huge fan of skincare influencers, but there are a few who, in my opinion, illustrate trends whilst still providing some unique and interesting content in some way. Asian-American influencers are my favourite for this, and I like how they combine Western and Eastern products and incorporate traditional ingredients and beauty practices into their routines. I especially like the older and skincare-focused content from Amy Chang, Ava and Yuri Lee, Aylen Park, Kelly Kim, and Pauline Choi.
Hwahae. This is the main beauty app in South Korea, and its most interesting feature (for me) is that it ranks the most popular and highly-reviewed products currently amongst Korean buyers. There’s often a drastic difference between what is popular domestically in South Korea vs which K-Beauty products are trending in the West, and if I have a free moment, I like to log in and research the current top products in different categories. The app is in Korean, so I took screenshots and used Google Translate until I learnt how to navigate it by memorisation, but I’ve found a few hidden gems this way!
At the end of the day, though, although I like staying informed, I don’t change up my routine or buy new products at all frequently, and I like to rely mostly on word-of-mouth and personal trial-and-error. I’m very methodical with introducing new products into my routine: I only do so if I think it will really benefit me, I buy sample- or travel-size products until I’m totally sure about them, and I introduce each new product individually, for a set trial period, and take photographs and notes to record its effect from start to finish of that trial period—including any effects I notice after removing the product from my routine again. Skincare is really a science, and I like to treat it as such, with careful research and a scientific method.

Diary of a Junebug
Wandering around the Raindrop Park
Lately I've been feeling kinda off - I can't quite put it into words. The weird thing is, the events that happened over the past few days don't affect me directly - as in it's directly related to stuff happening to friends that have little or nothing to do with me. It's basically me being somewhat emotionally invested in someone or something even though I barely know the person. Kinda like the whole how do you miss someone you never even knew sorta thing.
Maybe part of it has to do with a lot of changes happening around the same time in the span of roughly a year or two. By that, I'm talking about a specific group of people - Jamie's entourage, to be exact. Since the entourage disbanded, everyone has still been keeping in touch for the most part. And since then, a lot of members have moved on, pursuing bigger things, working on new projects, coming a long way since the entourage days. A lot of them were just starting out back then and now here they are.
A couple weeks ago, Roselle passed away. It wasn't a surprise since she told us about her prognosis last year, but still sad nonetheless. She was a former teen idol actress and singer turned director with her own production company that she co-founded with a friend. I became a fan of her during her Amanda Savannah days, a role that shot her to stardom as a kid. Like many in her position, she had a sort of love-hate relationship with the character who made her famous.
After Amanda Savannah ended, Roselle wanted to take a break from acting to focus on college. During that hiatus, Roselle was going through a lot of changes, including being diagnosed with stage four cancer. Nearly a decade after Amanda Savannah, Roselle reemerged from the public, starting from the ground up as a director. As for acting and singing, she was willing to keep that open, but realistically, the chances of her going back to either one were slim to none.
I remember when I last hung out with Roselle, about a year ago, when we visited Windcrest Wolf, not too long after the beginning of the end. Roselle has been keeping us updated with her video diary, Business as Usual, which is basically about her final year. The end was quick for her, which is what she had hoped for, so she was able to carry on for as long as she could. In her final entry she said that she was at peace with her life and that she was ready to go, ready to see her mom again after all these years. A few days later she was gone.
That's why I'm here with Jamie and Nedra at the Raindrop Park. Well, part of the reason - there's another thing too. Another death unfortunately, one of someone who I never got to meet.
Two former entourage members, actress Nedra Aylen and stuntman Allan Townshend crossed paths due to a tragedy. Allan's cousin Stef was one of Nedra's close friends at Starling who was gravely injured in a motorcycle accident. The crash left Stef in a coma for years before passing away weeks ago, a few days after Roselle's death.
According to Nedra, Stef and Allan didn't have a good relationship as Stef was abused by his parents. I don't know Allan as well as Nedra, but he comes across as someone who's making an effort to right his wrongs. It still doesn't make up for his past actions, which he is aware of. The two visit Stef at the care center but other than that, they don't interact with each other much.
Given how different Nedra and Allan are in terms of their social circles/personality/upbringing, and such, it's unexpected that they ended up crossing paths through Jamie. Nedra's a classical actress, preferring the stage over the screen while being prolific in both. Allan does stunt work, which I don't know too much about, but basically it means he and Nedra, although they were in the same entourage, had absolutely nothing in common other than Stef.
People always talk about how important it is to form connections, especially through tragedy. You'd think that Nedra and Allan would at least be able to bond over that, but in reality, you can't always share your burdens with someone. In the case of Nedra and Allan - at least the way I see it through Nedra - them being friends won't do much with that burden they carry. That's not to say they're dealing with their problems alone - in fact, they're quite well adjusted despite the circumstances - it's just that they don't need to seek each other to help cope.
It's not that they dislike each other, it's just the fact that they're so different in such a way that forming a connection would feel forced. Nedra says they do keep in touch but other than that, they don't feel the need to keep up with each other. It's good to form connections, but sometimes there's people you just don't feel the need for a strong bond with, and that's okay.
I have a feeling that's the case with Nedra and Allan - they share a struggle but don't need to rely on each other to pull through. Sometimes it just works out like that.
Nedra believes that Allan wants to make peace with Stef, which is why he visits her regularly. Although he and Stef were never friends, they were close to coming to some sort of a truce, with Allan more likely to side with Stef than against her. After all, why would Stef decide to intervene on that fateful day when Allan backed himself into a corner? I imagine the guilt of surviving the accident as well as being the reason why it happened is what pushed Allan over the edge. Nedra says it's not up to her to forgive him for how he treated Stef, but she's willing to give him the benefit of the doubt as what he's going through is punishment enough.
Like with Roselle, Stef's death wasn't unexpected either. By then, Nedra knew that she was already long gone. She says it feels like a weight off her shoulders, the relief of knowing that Stef can finally rest in peace instead of being stuck in limbo. I can't imagine being in Stef's position, stuck to machines keeping me alive even though it's futile. I don't think I'd want to be kept alive on life support if it won't do anything except prolong the inevitable.
When I'm gone, let me go. I don't want to die a slow death where I become nothing but a husk of who I was.
Nedra stuck with her to the very end. Allan was there too but he kept his distance. The end came quickly and quietly, her heart stopped beating and that was it. She says it's been rough, but not as difficult as she thought it would be. Then again, she said she already made her peace with losing Stef so I think that helped a bit.
I can't imagine losing two friends in a short time like what Nedra's going through right now. That's why Jamie invited her along her travels so she can take some much needed time off, leading to us crossing paths at the Raindrop Park. Before coming here, Jamie and Nedra spent the weekend at the Sparkling Spa Resort, which they said they enjoyed a lot.
After the Raindrop Park they weren't sure where they were gonna go next before deciding on the camp. The timing happens to be perfect as another entourage member's gonna drop by later on along with some other friends for a fun event. It'll be good for Nedra and Jamie to see Jean again as we were talking about how she's one of the busier members.
Maybe one day I'll get Marlo to meet Jean and Nedra as she's big fans of them. She and Don are planning to come back, likely during a camp event, so maybe I can finally make her dreams come true. I told Nedra about Marlo and she's totally down for a get together with her and knowing Jean, she'll be all for it too. Now, if only we can find a date and time when all three are available...
The Raindrop Park is one of those places where it's easy to get lost in. Watching the raindrops fall is strangely mesmerizing, I can't take my eyes off them. In a way, I think it's a good thing, probably because I've had so much on my mind regarding the stuff I just mentioned, so maybe I needed to take the time to process the information. That, and of course, writing my thoughts out once I finally found the words.
Along with the mesmerizing raindrops, another thing that sticks out to me is the decor, like the benches. I really like the leafy designs of the benches and lampposts - a lot of art inspiration around here. The foliage is lovely too and the raindrops really add to the aesthetic. I'm partial to rainy days so of course I'd be drawn to something like this. The cloudy, somewhat gloomy sky seems fitting enough as well. Even though it's gray, there's still some sunlight poking through, so it's not completely dark.
The fog in my mind's clearing up a bit, even more so now that I've put my thoughts on paper. I also think being with Jamie and Nedra also helped, especially knowing that Nedra's gonna be all right. It's rough, but as she said, she's made peace with it. And as for Roselle, she was able to make the most out of the time she had left so she was able to leave with no regrets.
I hope that when the end comes for me, I can leave the world the same way Roselle did. Is that asking for too much?

Chieti
The Mozart Music Festival has arrived in Chieti, and if there’s one thing I like, it’s music. Luckily, my friends also like music, so we ended up going to a look. Today there was an orchestra playing both modern and classic songs. The concert was supposed to start at 9:30, but if I have learned anything in the last couple of days, it would be that Italians like to take their time. So the concert actually ended up starting at 9:50. I will just say this, it was definitely worth the wait! The songs were played so beautifully that I could really just enjoy them. It was also very satisfying to watch how all the violinist were synchronized when their bows graced across the strings of their instrument. The orchestra ended up playing a total of 7 songs and of all the songs they could have played, they played Jurassic Park and Star Wars, which I play at my school in the band. It was nice to be able to compare how we played the songs to how they played the songs. Of course, they played the songs way better than us. To be fair, our school band consisted of 15 people, so not nearly as many people as they had. Throughout the concert, I was lost in the music. Then I heard a little squeal out of somebody. I snapped back into reality and noticed at least 5 cockroaches on the church steps we were sitting on. They moved their little legs so fast that it reminded me of when someone goes to fast forward a movie. Since it was the evening, my reaction time wasn’t so fast, so it took me a few seconds to actually realize what was going on. My reaction was neutral, I didn’t really get grossed out by the bugs, but they did add some excitement to our already wonderful evening. Overall, the whole evening was beautiful, and we had stayed right to the very end of the concert. I wanted to make sure we didn’t miss a thing. Sometimes you need to just go out and enjoy yourself in the moment.
Walk to the beat of your own drum,
Aylene

It wasn’t always just Disney characters giving autographs in the park. In 1955, Disneyland had an Aunt Jemima restaurant that served pancakes. The restaurant had a face actress (that’s the Disney term for a character that does not have to wear a mask) for Aunt Jemima herself, played by actress Aylene Lewis. She frequently sang, and the spot was one of the most popular restaurants in the park—it even hosted annual Pancake Races down Main Street USA. #Repost @eatthepast https://www.instagram.com/p/B4-FYSXlGOz/?igshid=1i9sqmqclee7

When Disneyland opened in 1955, among the eateries in Frontierland was Aunt Jemima’s Kitchen, sponsored by the pancake-mix company. Actress Aylene Lewis portrayed the stereotypical “mammy” from the logo and she became a popular photo-op character in the theme park, alongside Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and other well-known movie figures. Pancake races became a popular annual event at this attraction, but the restaurant closed in 1970. Not until 2009 did Disney create an African American princess, Tiana, from the animated motion picture “The Princess and the Frog.” (at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport) https://www.instagram.com/p/BszFK0WgaN7BLBaH-zV_YNoibpN5zk5EP8pP2M0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1urg0dg8ky2dc

Officials in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas on Monday issued mandatory evacuation orders as 155mph winds batter BahamasPeople check out the waves in the ocean as Hurricane Dorian continues to make its way toward the Florida coast on Monday in West Palm Beach, Florida. Photograph: Joe Raedle/Getty ImagesThe islands of the northern Bahamas continued to receive a pounding from Hurricane Dorian’s 155mph winds on Monday before the most powerful Atlantic cyclone of modern times set its sights on the US mainland, forcing millions of coastal residents there to flee inland to safety.Officials in Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas on Monday issued mandatory evacuation orders ahead of the expected midweek arrival of the unpredictable monster storm.Strong winds were already battering the coast on Monday afternoon north of Miami, and Floridians on the eastern edge of the state are braced for risky tropical storm conditions from the early hours of Tuesday onwards even if the hurricane does not make landfall on the US mainland but passes within a few dozen miles.A home in the Tropical Acres Mobile Home Park, an area that is under mandatory evacuation with Hurricane Dorian off the coast of Florida, in Jensen Beach. Photograph: Adam Delgiudice/AFP/Getty ImagesAt a Monday morning press conference, Florida governor Ron DeSantis, warned residents of his state to “remain vigilant” and urged those in coastal evacuation zones from Palm Beach to the Georgia border to relocate inland.“Get out now while you have time, while there’s fuel available and you’ll be safe on the roads,” he said.He added: “We’re going to have some impacts one way or the other. Hopefully by tonight we’ll have a sense of [Dorian’s] movement, and once we see the definitive movement north that’s going to allow us to even more concisely identify the places along Florida’s coast that are most at risk.”Dorian has already left a trail of “unprecedented destruction” during its slow two-day crawl through Abaco Island and Grand Bahama, in the archipelago off Florida’s south-east coast.A road is flooded during the passing of Hurricane Dorian in Freeport, Grand Bahama. Photograph: Tim Aylen/APWith wind gusts above 200mph and a storm surge of more than 20ft, Dorian tore into the islands, destroying or severely damaging more than 13,000 homes, according to the Red Cross, and claiming at least one life, a seven-year-old boy who drowned in Abaco.“Based on information out of Abaco, the devastation is unprecedented,” Hubert Minnis, the Bahamas prime minister, said in a tweet.“Dorian remains an extremely dangerous storm. Our focus right now is rescue, recovery and prayer.”Residents in the Bahamas shared videos on social media showing scenes of catastrophic winds, torrential rain and flooding. There were also unconfirmed reports of bodies seen in Abaco that officials said first responders would investigate when conditions allowed. After parking itself over Grand Bahama for almost nine hours on Monday, Dorian was expected to pick up speed overnight and move north-west towards Florida’s east coast, then turn north on a path closer to Georgia and the Carolinas by midweek.A lifeguard tower is removed in preparation for Hurricane Dorian as the storm approaches the Florida coast on Saturday. Photograph: David Santiago/APDespite weakening slightly to a category 4 storm on Monday, experts at the National Hurricane Center in Miami warned of “life-threatening storm surges and dangerous hurricane force winds”, even if the centre of Dorian follows its predicted path of remaining out at sea.“It cannot be stressed enough that only a small deviation could bring the core of the extremely dangerous hurricane onshore of the Florida east coast,” Daniel Brown, a senior hurricane expert at the NHC, said in a late-morning advisory.“In addition, Dorian’s wind field is predicted to expand, which would bring hurricane-force winds to the east coast even if the track does change.”Experts have acknowledged that this storm’s precise course has been more difficult than most to plot, partly due to quickly changing patterns of steering atmospheric ridges in the Atlantic. At 11am on Monday, Dorian was still 110 miles east of West Palm Beach, home to Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort, and plodding slowly west at 1mph, with hurricane force winds extending 45 miles from its core.In South Carolina, Governor Henry McMaster announced the evacuation of eight coastal counties, affecting more than 800,000 residents, adding to earlier orders issued for large numbers of counties along the coasts of central and north Florida and Georgia.Elderly citizens are evacuated from an assisted living community ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Dorian in Kissimmee, Florida. Photograph: Gregg Newton/ReutersEvacuations in Florida included a number of hospitals and dozens of nursing homes and assisted living facilities along the coast.Dorian marked the fourth consecutive year that at least one Atlantic cyclone had reached category 5 status, denoting sustained winds topping 157mph, according to the NHC. Hurricane Matthew in 2016 followed a similar offshore track to Dorian’s expected path yet still caused hundreds of billions of dollars of damage in the US and 47 deaths. In 2017 Irma and Maria ripped through the Caribbean, the latter blamed for more than 3,000 deaths in Puerto Rico. Last year’s Hurricane Michael wrecked areas of the Florida Panhandle that are still struggling to recover. There is growing evidence that the climate crisis, through the warming of the atmosphere and higher sea temperatures, is contributing to a pattern of fiercer, more destructive hurricanes.Meanwhile, the UK’s Ministry of Defence announced that the Royal Fleet Auxiliary support vessel Mounts Bay, which has been in Caribbean since June, would shortly arrive in the Bahamas to help with recovery efforts.

Northern Bahamas hunkers down as Hurricane Dorian closes in
A dangerous Hurricane Dorian closed in on the northern Bahamas early Sunday, threatening to batter islands with 150 mph (240 kph) winds, pounding waves and torrential rain as people hunkered down in schools, churches and other shelters.
Millions from Florida to the Carolinas kept a wary eye on Dorian, meanwhile, amid indications it would veer sharply northeastward after passing the Bahamas and track up the U.S. Southeast seaboard. But authorities warned even if its core did not make U.S. landfall and stayed offshore, the potent Category 4 storm would likely hammer U.S. coastal areas with powerful winds and heavy surf.
In the northern stretches of the Bahamas archipelago, hotels closed, residents boarded up homes and officials hired boats to move people from low-lying areas to bigger islands as Dorian approached.
Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis warned that Dorian is a “dangerous storm” and said any “who do not evacuate are placing themselves in extreme danger and can expect a catastrophic consequence.”
Small skiffs shuttled Saturday between outlying fishing communities and McLean’s Town, a settlement of a few dozen homes at the eastern end of Grand Bahama island, about 150 miles (240 kilometers) from Florida’s Atlantic coast. Most people came from Sweeting Cay, a fishing town of a few hundred people about 5 feet (1.5 meters) above sea level.
“We’re not taking no chances,” said Margaret Bassett, a ferry boat driver for the Deep Water Cay resort. “They said evacuate, you have to evacuate.”
Over two or three days, the slow-moving hurricane could dump as much as 4 feet (1 meter) of rain, unleash devastating winds and whip up a dangerous storm surge, said private meteorologist Ryan Maue, seconding some of the most reliable computer models.
Government spokesman Kevin Harris said Dorian was expected to impact some 73,000 residents and 21,000 homes. Authorities closed airports for The Abaco Islands, Grand Bahama and Bimini, but Lynden Pindling International Airport at the capital of Nassau remained open.
Jeffrey Allen, who lives in Freeport on Grand Bahama, said he had learned after several storms that sometimes predictions of damage don’t materialize, but he still takes precautions.
“It’s almost as if you wait with anticipation, hoping that it’s never as bad as they say it will be. However, you prepare for the worst nonetheless,” he said.
On average, the Bahamas archipelago gets a direct hit from a hurricane every four years, officials said. Construction codes require homes to have metal reinforcements for roof beams to withstand winds into the upper limits of a Category 4 hurricane, and compliance is generally tight for residents who can afford it. Risks are higher in poorer communities, which typically have wooden homes and are generally in lower-lying areas.
Late Saturday, Dorian was centered about 125 miles (200 kilometers) east of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas and 310 miles (500 kilometers) east of West Palm Beach as it crept westward at 8 mph (13 kph).
The slow-crawling storm was predicted to take until Monday afternoon to pass over the Bahamas, and then turn sharply and skirt up the U.S. coast, staying just off Florida and Georgia on Tuesday and Wednesday and then buffeting South Carolina and North Carolina on Thursday.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis warned residents along that state’s densely populated Atlantic coast, “We’re not out of the woods yet.” He noted some forecast models still bring Dorian close to or even onto the Florida peninsula.
“That could produce life-threatening storm surge and hurricane force winds,” DeSantis said. “That cone of uncertainty still includes a lot of areas on the east coast of Florida and even into central and north Florida, so we are staying prepared and remaining vigilant.”
In Miami, Carmen Segura said she had installed hurricane shutters at her house, bought extra gas and secured water and food for at least three days. She felt well prepared and less worried, given the latest forecasts, but still was uneasy given the storm’s unpredictability.
“Part of me still feels like: So, now what?” Segura said.
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency, mobilizing state resources to prepare for potential storm effects. President Donald Trump already declared a state of emergency and was brief late Saturday about the storm.
The hurricane upended some Labor Day holiday weekend plans in the U.S.: Major airlines allowed travelers to change their reservations without fees, big cruise lines rerouted their ships and Cumberland Island National Seashore off Georgia closed to visitors. Disney World and Orlando’s other resorts held off announcing any closings.
Sherry Atkinson, who manages a hotel on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, said the hurricane wasn’t spoiling holiday vacations for guests. “So far, there hasn’t even been a snippet of conversation about evacuations,” she said.

Scruff’s Top 5
Over the past 8 years I have been privileged to play music all over the country, from an hour away to a 14 hour drive away. I can't recall the last time I actually thought about it, regardless of the length of my career as a DJ, I can truly say that I have had success. I don't say that to gloat, brag, or be obnoxious; I say it to proclaim gratitude. Not everyone can say that they have done a dream job, not everyone can say that they have been paid for their hobby. I am humbled when I look back on the many adventures I have had thus far, truthfully its mind-blowing. This past weekend I didn't have a wedding but club gig at Lime Lounge in Des Moines, IA. This wasn't the first time I had played in the capitol city, and hopefully it won't be my last. This past weekend I decided to head on down to Iowa's capitol city for a weekend getaway. Over the span of three days, I can say that rest wasn't on the agenda. Saturday morning some friends and I went down to the farmer's market for breakfast before heading to AdventureLand for the remainder of the day. I'm always in awe of how many people come out to support the farmer's market. Here in Sheldon we have one but, it's quite empty most times. There were what seemed to be hundreds of people walking the streets buying goods, and enjoying themselves. I hope this movement reaches smaller communities, not only would it give people some great things to buy, but also help out the smaller farmers, and entrepreneurs. AdventureLand was alright, besides the long lines for the rides I had a great time. It was my first time to the theme park and it reminded me of being home in New York heading to Rye PlayLand or Six Flags in New Jersey, just on a smaller scale. I would definitely go back for the cotton candy, funnel cakes, and of course the thrill rides. Sunday the lady and I went to the state fair. We had a great time people watching and exploring the exhibits. I had the chance of petting a baby kangaroo which was pretty neat in my opinion, and enjoy some fair food in the process. After a long day of walking and humidity, it was time for the main attraction of the weekend. My set started at 12 midnight and went till close, I was excited to play a solo house set for the first hour and a B2B with Ron Gotti for the 2nd. My highlight was having a prominent figure in the dance scene on the floor all night grooving to the sounds that I had provided. It's times like that where I know i'm in the right field. I started the night off with a lil Aretha, since she passed earlier in the week, I felt it necessary to pay tribute for all of the music she made, and all the artists she had influenced over the span of her life. I made my way down into the deeper side of house and tech house before hitting the crowd with some bass. Overall I think the night was a success and I can't wait to see what the future holds. If I can say anything about success its this: keep on pushing, keep on failing, keep on dreaming. Goals will be tough to reach at times but you can achieve them, I know that if I can make it work anybody can. Though that may be quite cliche to say, I know my struggles and I know that if I can start to walk down that path for my dreams to come true anyone can. If you lose the passion find it, if you lose the discipline, start over again, if you want to achieve your goals dust off and keep going.
