her name is Velvet and she is an Ayam Cemani hen that spends most of her time catching bugs (especially worms) to eat, although she ocassionaly suggested ideas to escape from the farm

Velvet is stoic and barely shows any emotion (probably due to the trauma of living in mrs. tweedy farm all her life), however she is actually a really warm birb deep inside and cares about her friends<3

Fibromelanism in Chickens

Fibromelanism is unique to chickens. I haven't heard of instances of this in any other species.

Fibromelanism causes black skin, meat, bones and organs. Two chicken breeds that it is commonly found in are Ayam Cemanis and Silkies.

Trust me, I've butchered a Silkie before. Every organ is black. The blood isn't, of course.

Fibromelanism is caused by an autosomal dominant gene, but it needs the id+ gene to express. The id+ gene is sexlinked recessive. Id+ enables a chicken to have slate legs, or even dark facial skin in the presence of other melanizers.

Pidge and Nevar, polar opposites and best friends.

Pidge and Nevar are about as different as any two hens can be, colouration, size (Pidge is much larger), even their temperaments. Pidge is friendly to all and makes happy little noises... Nevar sounds like a banshee at the best of times and is rather selective about her acquaintances. They are the proof that opposites attract.

I believe this is an Ayam Cemani, just don’t ask me from where. The eyes being brown rather than black makes me doubt the species tbh. (hey, I’ve never claimed to be a specialist of any sort).

Fact from the Happy Chicken Coop: The Ayam Cemani is a fairly poor egg layer. On average, they will lay around 80 eggs per year, which is around 1 egg per week.They do seem to go ‘off lay’ for an extended period of time. Apparently, they will lay 20-30 eggs and then stop laying.This can be up to 6 months, and then they will start all over again
