Avi Federgreen's Indie Producing Course
Avi Federgreen's Indie Producing Course
Saturday, March 2nd, Canadian Avi Federgreen, Executive Producer of the recent film Moon Point, comes to Edmonton to deliver his course on producing independent films. The cost of the day-long course is $75 for students and FAVA members, and $100 for everyone else (plus service fees). Usually this course is about $250, so this is a good value in my opinion.
Moon Point and the 2012 pitch session
When Moon Point came to the Metro theater in April of 2012, so did Avi Federgreen. After a screening of the film Federgreen spent some time taking questions from the crowd. The next day he and Edmontonian Guy Lavallee took pitches from Edmonton filmmakers. Any Edmonton filmmaker in fact!
This pitch session was pretty unusual--it's uncommon for producers to take pitches from anyone, but that's just what Federgreen and his partner in River Valley Films, Guy Lavallee, did. I even pitched them my awful film idea at the time, and they listened (I actually heard myself talking and how bad this movie idea sounded--a bit of an out of body experience), and then they gave me some notes and sent me on my way. It was great experience to pitch them a film, because between the two of them they have heard everything.
The course
Here is the description of the course, note the key words like "low-budget" and "independent."
In this intense and interactive one-day workshop, Avi Federgreen, Producer and Distributor of low-budget Canadian films, walks you through what you need - and what it takes - to produce low-budget, independent films in Canada today. This is producing experience from the trenches.
You can read the entire outline of the day course on the Eventbrite page, as well as pay for the inexpensive course, but here are the main sections:
Workshop Outline:
SEGMENT 1: THE PRODUCT Part #1
9:00 am – 10:30 am
SEGMENT 2: THE PRODUCT Part #2
11:00 am – 1:00 pm
SEGMENT 3: THE MONEY
2:00 pm – 3:15 pm
SEGMENT 4: THE PROMOTION
If you are interested in producing films then I would suggest that this is a good session for the money. Producing a film can be an arcane art to emerging filmmakers, so it's good to get an idea of what is involved in producing independent films in Canada from someone who actually does it for a living; someone who will straightforwardly explain all the obstacles and pitfalls and how he gets over and around them.
Thanks, Curtis.
