NDD News: Avenue NYC Project Category Days

Here at SBS, our neighborhood commercial revitalization efforts across the City are supported through Avenue NYC. Avenue NYC relies on the federally-funded Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program, whose purpose is to support low-to-moderate income neighborhoods.

This past fiscal year, following a series of conversations with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the SBS contract management team developed and held a series of workshops corresponding to the five Avenue NYC project categories:

Merchant Organizing

Business Attraction

Capacity Building

Façade Improvement Management

These project-specific seminars brought together grant recipients from across the City to discuss strategy, program expectations, and implementation best practices. In addition to the opportunity to discuss project challenges and successes, each project category day featured a case study of an effective Avenue NYC project implementation, as well as a separate presentation detailing the importance of data collection and impact measurement.

Beyond the capacity-building presentations and idea sharing, organization staff members are afforded the opportunity to establish professional connections with their counterparts across the City. The informal "alumni network" of Avenue NYC participants created by these workshops allows organizations to increase the effectiveness of their programs, and better coordinate future efforts to improve their neighborhoods.

The final project category day for FY14 will be held on June 11, at SBS (110 William Street, 7th Floor, in Manhattan) from 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., and will focus on Placemaking. If you are interested in attending this workshop, or in the Avenue NYC program, please contact Chris Bruno.
