7 mana for a 5/5 is not on curve so the ability needs to really stand out to compensate for the suboptimal stats. You really want a 6/6 for 7 at minimum before the card becomes woefully overcosted. This is a legendary creature so it can be your commander but this card does not lend itself to a clear strategy. On edhrec, there are currently 20 commander decks that Veldrane leads and he does not see significantly more play in the 99 of any commander deck. Obviously, this is not a competitive card by any means. The only deck I would play this card in is a Baron sengir flavor deck as Veldrane was the most loyal servant and minion of the vampire. Veldrane is primarily responsible for hunting for food for the Baron. Veldrane often carries a Dwarven sword and this is one of the only identifying features. Many believe Veldrane is but a puppet of Baron Sengir. As a hunter, Veldrane would often hunt in the woods of the Autumn Willow. While he can get through the words unscathed as evidenced by his ability to gain forestwalk he is not quite as powerful going through the harsh woods. The autumn Willow does not like Baron sengir and likewise does not care for Veldrane. In order to insult him she made a miniature replica of him out as a form of open mockery. The replica is represented on the reserved list cars faerie noble. Notice that both arts have the characters wearing eye patches. The story of Homelands was probably the best thing about he set. It is interesting to see how the legendary creatures interact. Homelands seemed to be a precursor to the stories of today which also sometimes uses legendary creatures to represent events in the actual story. I would not be surprised if we never revisit the Homelands or Baron sengir storyline especially with the omenpaths. The card is about 75 cents or less currently and only ever held a high of about 4 dollars. There's no playability here so unless you really enjoyed Homelands or you think that all of these characters will get a redesign then you can pick up one copy to have one of every legendary creature and call it a day. What would a new version even do? Would it be a hate card against green decks? Would it have abilities that trigger when a creature with lower power than its printed power attacks? Even then, are you really going to use this minion? Baron Sengir barely sees play and that character is way more interesting and beloved than Veldrane. Everything I like at this card though I think of the mutant callisto from x-men.

Playing with Autumn Willow and Baron Sengir
I’ve previously tried my hand at making up my own “theme decks” for Homelands but if I’d checked old issues of The Duelist I’d have found there were already some. A bit more consistent and powerful than mine — yeah, we all joke about Homelands in this context — but even so. Quite cool features, actually, which have some background about the story, a small piece written by the artist, and a…

Autumn Walk Around Willow Lake... with my dog Ginger. Nearing the end of peak color the weekend before Thanksgiving. (re-edited, gave the images time they deserved - blended in and revised a few distracting elements such as unnaturally bright areas in the clouds)

Autumn Willow is an example of a card that has experienced power creep. Avabruck Caretaker is just a more powerful card in almost every way so please play that card before you think about this one. This is another card that is difficult to talk about from a play perspective. There just is not a reason to put this card in a deck from a competitive standpoint. Thus, if we want to discuss this card in a meaningful way, but it has never actually seen play anywhere, then we have two choices. We can take about the price history or we can talk about the lore. Autumn Willow is a legendary creature from Homelands and actually has a respectable amount of lore surrounding her. I have never read or engaged with the story from homelands but I think it was considered one of the more positive aspects of the set. Baron sengir and the sengir family feature heavily in the set and apparently autumn Willow was a viable opposing force to the vampire family. She was a ruler and protector of the Great Wood of Homelands and was an embodiment of the forest with all of the power that the forest and its inhabitants possessed. Apparently Autumn Willow gained sentience and great power because feroz's bane kept mana from leaving Homlands. She created many other forms of life including Daughter of Autumn which is another legendary creature on the reserved list. She also has some association with fairies and the Willow priestess. Goblins fear her as nature can be just as cruel as it is kind and one of Autumn Willow's favorite punishments is turning people into lizards. The hungry mist is also her creation. Autumn Willow has not been entirely forgotten as an event card featuring her and grandmother sengir was released in 2023. Likewise, a new card for grandmother sengir was released in March of the machines. At the very least, Autumn Willow can be your commander in your Homelands flavored deck. Maybe there is a grandmother sengir deck that you can flavorfully duel using this card. We can also discuss Autumn Willow from a price perspective to see if we can see patterns in the reserved list even in bulk cards. I noticed that Autumn Willow was almost 5 dollars in 2021. If I look at many other cards during this same time period I can deduce that reserved list cards were being bought in mass during this time and the price of all reserved list cards, including bulk, was rising. 2021 was a time for buyouts so this is not surprising. It is very interesting to see the price go back down to about one dollar. I knew about the reserved list spikes in 2021 so seeing this card spike during this era is not shocking. I noticed another spike for this card in 2014. The card was over 4 dollars for a short time during March of that year and I understand the meaning for this spike a lot less. This was over ten years ago at this point and my memory is a little hazy. I assume there was another major reserved list buyout around 2014 that caused this card to spike. It seems like during both spikes the ceiling on this card was 5 dollars so is that the limit or will a future 2025 buyout cause this card to finally be over 5 bucks?

What would the Theme Decks of Homelands have looked like?
Magic before October 1997 was a pretty dark, sad, unappealing thing. But then came Tempest, and with it the true heart of the game: preconstructed theme decks. Not actually being serious with this intro, but just go with it? Cheers! Since then there’s been a few supplemental products and online offerings which have helped bring this mysterious time to the homes and the hearts of the precon…
