@misskhep Some soup recipes! Under cut since they expand and make the post kinda long. I don't have my mom's recipe binder so these are probably slightly different from the versions of them I've had, but I checked every ingredient to make sure they're all basically the same to ones I've had so I'm not just listing links of food I've never tried! It's mostly the same, slightly different measurements here and there.
For this one below I'd use a yellow or white onion but that's just me. What I love about soup is pretty much everything can be substituted with no issue though!

What is Tiffin Food?
Tiffin food refers to a traditional style of meal or snack often associated with South Asian cultures, particularly in India. The term “tiffin” originates from British India, where it was used to describe a light mid-day meal or snack, typically eaten in the late morning or early afternoon.
Over time, it has evolved to encompass a variety of portable, nutritious, and convenient foods for quick meals on the go, making it popular among workers, students, and busy households. A typical tiffin menu includes items like rice, roti, dal, vegetable curry, a small salad, and sometimes a dessert.
In India, “tiffin” is not only a term for the meal itself but also the container in which it is carried. Tiffin boxes, or “dabbas,” are usually multi-layered containers made from stainless steel or other materials. These containers keep different dishes separated, preserving the flavors and textures.
The compartments often include staples like rice, bread (such as chapati or naan), a vegetable or lentil curry, and sometimes a small dessert or salad. This structure allows for a balanced meal that combines grains, proteins, vegetables, and spices. Tiffin service near me offers convenient, home-cooked meals delivered daily, providing fresh, nutritious, and affordable options for busy individuals.
Tiffin food is well-known for its cultural diversity, as each region in India has unique dishes and recipes suited to its ingredients and traditions. For instance, a typical South Indian tiffin may include dosa (a rice and lentil crepe), idli (steamed rice cakes), or upma (a savory semolina dish), while in North India, parathas, sabzi (vegetable curry), and raita (yogurt sauce) are common choices.
Punjabi tiffin services near me offer authentic, homemade Punjabi meals, including parathas, dals, curries, and sweets, delivered conveniently.
The popularity of tiffin has grown beyond India, inspiring meal services and delivery options around the world. Tiffin services in cities like Mumbai use an intricate network of dabbawalas, who deliver fresh, homemade meals to workers daily, showcasing the effectiveness and appeal of this efficient and health-conscious food culture.
Tiffin food thus represents not just a meal but a sustainable, community-driven approach to dining that is cherished by millions. Shah jeera, or royal cumin, is a spice with an earthy, mildly sweet flavor, often used in Indian dishes like biryanis and curries.
Does Tiffin Mean Lunch?
The term “tiffin” is often associated with lunch, but it carries a more nuanced meaning, particularly in South Asian cultures. Originating in British India, “tiffin” was initially used to describe a light snack or meal enjoyed between breakfast and dinner, typically around midday. “Write for us food” invites food enthusiasts and experts to contribute articles, recipes, or reviews on food-related topics for publication.
Over time, the term has come to represent a variety of meals, which can range from a light snack to a full lunch. However, it generally implies a meal that is portable and easy to eat on the go. Tiffin services provide fresh, home-style meals delivered daily, offering a convenient solution for nutritious, affordable, and flavorful dining on the go.
In India and other parts of South Asia, tiffin often refers to lunch, especially when packed in a “tiffin box” or “dabba.” These multi-layered containers keep various food items separate, making it easy to carry a balanced meal, complete with rice, curries, bread, and sides.
For office workers, students, and travellers, “tiffin” has essentially become synonymous with lunch since it’s frequently the main meal they carry with them to eat in the middle of the day. The Indian tiffin lunch box is a multi-layered container used to carry a balanced meal with rice, curries, and bread.
Interestingly, the concept of tiffin has inspired a whole delivery system in cities like Mumbai, where dabbawalas deliver homemade tiffin lunches directly to workplaces. This system has brought international recognition to the term, with “tiffin” often understood globally as a portable lunch.
However, depending on the region and context, tiffin can also mean a snack or breakfast. Thus, while “tiffin” often means lunch, it can also refer to any light meal enjoyed during the day. Tiffin delivery services provide home-cooked, nutritious meals, often delivered in traditional boxes, ideal for busy professionals and students.
Do Cinnamon Sticks Go Bad?
Cinnamon sticks don’t spoil but can lose their potency over time. Stored properly in a cool, dry place, they maintain flavor for about 3–4 years, offering better longevity than ground cinnamon.
What Are The 7 Indian Spices?
The seven essential Indian spices include cumin, coriander, turmeric, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, and black pepper. These spices form the foundation of many Indian dishes, adding unique flavors, aromas, and colors. Used individually or blended in spice mixes like garam masala, they create the distinct taste profiles of Indian cuisine.

The secret to authentic Indian cooking lies in its spices. Spices like cumin, turmeric, coriander, and garam masala form the backbone of Indian cuisine, lending complexity and aroma to dishes. Star Mart carries a variety of these spices in their international section, making it easy to stock up on these essentials.
1.1. Creating Your Own Garam Masala Blend
Garam masala, a traditional Indian spice blend, is made from a mix of spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, cumin, and coriander seeds. Toast the whole spices in a dry pan until fragrant, then grind them into a fine powder using a spice grinder. Making your own garam masala is easy and ensures freshness, which makes a big difference in flavor.
2. Classic Basmati Rice and Perfect Cooking Techniques
Basmati rice, a long-grain rice known for its delicate aroma and fluffy texture, is a staple in Indian households. The secret to cooking perfect basmati rice is rinsing it several times to remove excess starch, then soaking it before cooking. At Star Mart, you’ll find quality basmati rice brands that deliver authentic flavor and texture.
3. Lentils and Legumes: Foundations of Indian Vegetarian Dishes
Lentils, also known as dal, are a fundamental part of Indian cuisine, especially for vegetarians. Star Mart offers a variety of lentils, including red lentils (masoor dal), yellow split peas (chana dal), and green gram (moong dal). Lentils are not only affordable and nutritious but also versatile, forming the basis for many Indian soups and stews.
3.1. Recipe: Traditional Yellow Dal Tadka
To make dal tadka, cook yellow lentils until soft. In a separate pan, heat oil, and add cumin seeds, garlic, ginger, and green chilies. Pour this tempering over the cooked dal, add a pinch of garam masala, and serve with basmati rice or naan for a comforting, authentic meal.
4. Fresh Vegetables and Herbs for Authentic Flavors
Fresh vegetables are essential in Indian cooking, with ingredients like onions, tomatoes, bell peppers, and green chilies forming the base of many curries. Fresh herbs like cilantro and mint add a burst of flavor. Star Mart’s produce section stocks these essentials, so you’ll have no trouble finding what you need for traditional Indian dishes.
4.1. Recipe: Aloo Gobi (Potato and Cauliflower Curry)
This classic vegetarian dish combines potatoes and cauliflower in a spiced tomato-based sauce. Sauté the vegetables with spices like cumin, turmeric, and coriander, then cook until tender. Serve with roti or rice for a hearty, flavorful meal.
5. Star Mart’s Range of Dairy Products for Indian Cooking
Dairy products like yogurt, paneer (Indian cottage cheese), and ghee (clarified butter) are commonly used in Indian recipes. Yogurt adds creaminess to marinades and sauces, paneer is a delicious protein source, and ghee adds depth of flavor. Star Mart stocks these items, making it easy to recreate authentic Indian recipes at home.
5.1. Recipe: Paneer Butter Masala
To make paneer butter masala, start by sautéing onions, tomatoes, and spices to make a rich sauce. Add in cubes of paneer and a dollop of cream for a luxurious, flavorful curry that pairs perfectly with naan or rice.
6. Authentic Indian Breads: Naan, Roti, and Paratha
Indian meals often feature flatbreads such as naan, roti, and paratha. Naan is a soft, leavened bread usually baked in a tandoor (clay oven), but it can be made on a stovetop too. Star Mart offers frozen naan for convenience, or you can make your own with flour, yogurt, and yeast.
6.1. Recipe: Homemade Naan Bread with Simple Ingredients

Kumbakonam Kadapa Recipe — A Traditional South Indian Delight
Kumbakonam Kadapa is a popular dish from the temple town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu. This creamy, flavorful curry is made from lentils, coconut, and spices and is the perfect side dish for idli, dosa, or steamed rice. It’s not just delicious but also highly nutritious, combining the goodness of protein-rich lentils with aromatic spices. Let’s dive into this step-by-step recipe for making this traditional South Indian treat!
Ingredients:
For the Kadapa:
Split Moong Dal — ½ cup
Oil — 2 tbsp
Bay Leaf — 1
Fennel Seeds — 1 tsp
Onion — 1 (finely chopped)
Green Chilies — 2 (slit)
Ginger-Garlic Paste — 1 tsp
Tomato — 1 (finely chopped)
Turmeric Powder — ¼ tsp
Salt — to taste
For the Coconut Paste:
Coconut — ¼ cup (grated)
Green Chilies — 2
Fennel Seeds — ½ tsp
For Garnishing:
Fresh Coriander Leaves — as needed
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Cook the Moong Dal
Rinse the split moong dal thoroughly and cook it in a pot with 1 ½ cups of water until soft and mushy. You can also pressure cook the dal for 2–3 whistles for faster cooking.
Once cooked, mash the dal and set it aside. This will be the base of the curry.
Step 2: Prepare the Coconut Paste
In a blender, add grated coconut, green chilies, and fennel seeds. Grind these ingredients to a smooth paste with a little water.
Set the paste aside, as we will add it to the curry later for a creamy texture and flavor.
Step 3: Sauté the Aromatics
Heat oil in a pan over medium heat. Add bay leaf and fennel seeds; let them sizzle for a few seconds.
Add finely chopped onion and green chilies. Sauté until the onion becomes translucent.
Add the ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1–2 minutes until the raw smell disappears.
Step 4: Add Tomato and Spices
Now, add the chopped tomato and a pinch of turmeric powder. Cook until the tomato turns soft and mushy.
Add salt as needed and stir well.
Step 5: Combine the Dal and Coconut Paste
Add the mashed moong dal to the pan and stir to combine.
Add the coconut paste prepared earlier, mixing well to ensure a smooth, creamy texture.
Step 6: Adjust Consistency and Cook
Add water to reach your desired consistency; traditionally, this dish has a thick, stew-like consistency.
Let it simmer on low heat for 5–7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
Step 7: Garnish and Serve
Once the Kadapa reaches the desired consistency, turn off the heat.
Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
Serve hot with idli, dosa, or steamed rice for an authentic South Indian meal.
Tips for the Perfect Kumbakonam Kadapa
For a richer flavor: You can add a pinch of garam masala towards the end of cooking.
To enhance aroma: Add a few curry leaves along with the bay leaf in Step 3.
Spice Level: Adjust the green chilies to taste if you prefer it milder or spicier.
Why Try Kumbakonam Kadapa?
Kumbakonam Kadapa is unique for its mild yet flavorful combination of lentils and coconut. Unlike most curries that are spicy, this one has a delicate taste, making it an excellent choice for breakfast dishes like idli and dosa. Plus, the protein-rich lentils and healthy fats from coconut make it a nutritious choice for any meal.
