Traintober 2024 Day 2: The Game
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
from the Victorian Railways Newsletter , September 1949
A bit of a history related post today, I am going to natter a bit about railway footy.
The Victorian Railways Institute, a school set up by the VR to educate their employees, had its own amateur Australian Rules competition. This was not uncommon in Victoria where company leagues could spring up in particular avenues of employment (there even a State Bank league for bank employees).
Nor was this uncommon with railways generally, as some of the Big Four railway companies in Britain provided sporting clubs for their employees to participate in.
But the VRI Football League was notable for having players within it that competed in the major leagues as well, the top tier Victorian Football League (the one that is now the Australian Football League today) and the second string Victorian Football Association (which exists only as a rump to the AFL now).
The teams were generally made up of enginemen and staff from various railway lines (Coburg Line, Essendon Line, Heidelberg Line or "Suburban Line"), stations (Flinders Street Station), divisions (Car and Wagon, Goods, railway police), workshops and marshalling yards (North Melbourne Loco, Melbourne Yard, Spotswood). Its to be noted that they did not all compete at at once, seasons running with a few teams on the park according to availability.
They apparently played on Tuesday afternoons and were unpaid, though umpires were paid £2 for the afternoon.
The league competition apparently did keep running until recently but I need to do more research.
Information on hand regarding the VRI-FL is a little difficult to get through so I mainly cribbed this info from "What A Journey" by former VR Station Master Thomas Yates and these fellows here.

I hope this isn't offensive but Aussies watch NFL? <3
yes but its definitely a younger thing and not at all as much as other sports and i checked and there IS a minor gridiron (what we call american football) governing body here but they're pretty small and id never heard of them till now 💀
its cos we have AFL (australian football league) that plays aussie rules football. we're kinda like the usa in that we have our own kind of football and therefore call 'football' soccer. also honestly your football is SOOO pussy omg you guys wear pads and helmets? look at our glorious boys climbing all over each other sling tackling shoving each other in short shorts and jerseys and nothing else REAL MEN!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and our beautiful ball with the maccas logo on it. in terms of sports popularity in australia it goes AFL, cricket, rugby, soccer, tennis as the top 5, then basketball netball and maybe formula one. the MCG (melbourne cricket ground) is where all the big sports stuff is held and traffic and public transport is an absolute nightmare when there are games (i lived in melbourne which is THE home of the afl, since the afl used to be just for the state of victoria (vfl) which is where melbourne is)
HOWEVER. we are probably comparitavely one of the bigger non-american fans of american football, i checked and the superbowl had ~a million viewers. australians love sports and tv and ESPECIALLY gambling lol

ABBEY HOLMES // FOOTBALLER
“She is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the Adelaide Football Club in the AFL Women's (AFLW). Holmes often compared to Darcy Fogarty of the Adelaide Crows, began playing football for the Waratah Football Club in the Northern Territory Football League in 2012 and won four consecutive premierships with the club, along with being the league's leading goalkicker the same four seasons. In 2014, she became the first woman to kick 100 goals in a season in an established football league, and in 2016 she was drafted in the inaugural AFL Women's draft by Adelaide.”

Nice Ask Week! If Tarlos was Australian, what favorites/hobbies/habits would they have?
hello courtney! thank you for this ask (it's really late, i'm so sorry).
called up my fellow australians for this task because it wasn't easy. the truth is, we don't have that many quirks. most of the fun stuff is the wildlife that can kill you.
i'm from melbourne (in the south-east of the country) and there's a huge italian presence in this city, which means we have both incredible food and coffee. melburnians are known to be coffee snobs, and i think if carlos lived here he would definitely get in and amongst the coffee culture. it's also a bit of a foodie-dream city, so i feel he'd fit right in.
as for tk...he'd definitely be one of those kids who lived down at the beach in summer. he probably did nippers (a surf life-saving program for kids), because owen would have wanted him to learn swim safety.
one question which divides the nation is whether you're a diehard fan of rugby league or australian rules football. some people (me) aren't really into either, but typically people follow one or the other. my state is super AFL heavy, so i'm better acquainted with that. if tarlos had to pick a team...i'm going to say carlos is giving geelong vibes for absolutely no reason whatsoever. tk, on the other hand, he's a little feral. not collingwood level but i could see him getting around richmond. no shade to anyone who follows AFL please i'm from melbourne and i loosely follow the brisbane lions so...who am i to judge.

Monster High Reimagined
Lagoona Blue character bio/redesign
Lagoona Blue (she/her)
(pansexual)
The eldest child of the Blues,a mixed Gillman/Bunyip family.
(Mixed Brazilian and Indigenous Australian)
Lagoona is an energetic half-bunyip girl from the great scarrier reef off Australia, who after a disastrous time in school in her own country was pulled from the proverbial and literal tide by her parents to attend monster high. Boisterous,a little airheaded but kind and friendly, with powerful shapeshifting abilities to match her big emotions,Lagoona plans on becoming the school's star athlete having already joined the football, rugby and swim teams in her first few weeks on site. In that time also becoming fast friends with a small group of monsters called the Ghouls and her roommate Draculaura,MH looking and feeling like the fresh start she needed after her past experiences…
Likes: team sports (particularly football, cricket, rugby league and aussie rules),meat and seafood, sharks, telenovelas and hanging out at the beach.
Dislikes: water pollution, dolphins, public performance, dancing and low humidity.
Killer style: swimwear, sportswear and comfortable hoodies, primarily in her favoured blue, pink and black, and although they're not really athletic wear, fishnets upcycled out of literal nets that floated away from boats,an objectively better use for them than having them floating around tangling up sealife.
Familiar: Neptuna, a Rabbitfish Shark, and according to lagoona, the cutest creature in the whole ocean! (Regardless of some people's unwarranted dismissal towards her pet as just a "dumb fish" and or mean jokes about her being delicious fried with chips Toralei!, I mean look at her, she's adorable!!!)
Pet Peeve: the climate and humidity of new Salem. Although lagoona loves monster high the cold climate of vermont compared to her home in Australia causes her scales and scutes to itch and shed a lot, especially after a day playing sport.
Freaky Flaw: Her resentment over how school in Australia ended up for her. Spending most of her early teens bullied lagoona is determined to "get it right this time" with her new school, and while the ghouls are an amazing group of pals, lagoona feels a little guilty over not being her "true self" compared to them, worried that they'd abandon her if she let her true feelings show, and instead channels her anger into sports and exercise to blow off steam.
Spooky Secret: While nowadays she prefers to play contact sports, up until secondary school lagoona also participated in competitive gymnastic and dance, however after an incident while living in Australia she developed a fear of dancing and public performances, and threw herself into more team based sports instead, the fallout of this same incident being what prompted her parents to pull her out of secondary school send her to monster high
Dream job: Lagoona hopes one day her sporting prowess will land her a spot on the Australian Olympic team,or have her playing for the Matildas in the world cup,or at the Rugby championship for the wallabies,or in the AFL grand final,or…
Five Fearsome Facts:
As a half-bunyip, lagoona has some of their innate shape-shifting abilities, although being a teen she's still working around the ins and outs of learning to control said transformations and high emotions sometimes cause her to shapeshift involuntarily, lagoona is thankful monster high can be a place to properly hone her powers to be as proficient as her mother one day.
Lagoonas mother is also renowned for having the fiercest set of jaws on the whole scarrier reef, and her daughter's aren't too different, with lagoona sporting a bite force as strong as a crocodile and can similarly crack bones open with sheer jaw muscle strength alone as well as regrow her entire set of teeth if needs be. Regardless,Mrs blue ensures that lagoona and her sisters keep their teeth in tiptop shape through daily cleaning regardless of whether they can regenerate them or not.
Because of her active lifestyle and the energy needed for shapeshifting, lagoona has a voracious appetite, having been rumoured to have once skeletonised a whole cow carcass back in Australia. Although now at the behest of her notably gore-squeamish friend Draculaura she's trying to be a little less gung-ho about the act of chowing down on her favourite foods.
Like a lot of her latino father's side of her family (as well as a few of her mum's by way of Neighbors) lagoona has grown up with a love of telenovelas and soap operas and has been trying to get her roommate draculaura as invested in them as she is since they started boarding together.
Compared to her boy/girl crazy friends Lagoona has so far not really bothered much with trying to find a partner at MH, in truth she's taking a clean break from dating after the disastrous implosion of her first middle school relationship with gil webber, which lagoona in hindsight can recognise was incredibly unhealthy in nature (lagoona's nigh-obsessive romanticisation, gil's self pity and neglectful tendencies and general inexperience from both parties) and was just not what she needed at the time.
New character profile,as well as the final character out of our initial gang of five/six main characters!
Tbh lagoona being part bunyip and a shapeshifter has been an idea I've liked for a while, for those not in the know a bunyip is a water monster from Australian folklore that originated from indigenous Australians (hence why lagoona is also half indigenous) either based on the indigenous oral tradition about extinct Aussie megafauna or as a simple campfire story to screw with the white settlers/warn them about going near stagnant pools that could be full of crocodiles/murderous kangaroos/what have you.
A big part of the bunyip myth is that what it looks like exactly is kind of up to interpretation, hence shapeshifting, particularly shapeshifting different traits and features from different animals into one design (for example lagoona having crocodile scutes and jaws, webbed paws like a river otter and a fluked tail like a bull shark alongside more gillman-y features inherited from her dad) and as a side note,I also like the further idea that because of their half Latino heritage lagoona and her sisters designs either incorporate parts of or only Amazonian animals opposed to thier mother, whose parts come from only Australian animals (with a few exceptions their faunas are pretty interchangeable so they don't look all that different)
Also in case you were wondering what a rabbitfish shark looks like,Neptuna looks kinda like this:
Tumblr media
Anyways, with our initial set of protagonists done, now it's time to write up bios for all the supporting characters, starting with the kids in the main ghouls school year...

fifa are going to look into it. The situation broke Fifa laws (and australian laws) and fifapro (the players union) have gotten involved. If Fifa find him guilty then he won’t be allowed to work in football for 2-15 years and will not be allowed to run again for rfef president or UEFA vice president/ president (he is currently vice).
Spain as far as i am aware, are the only nation to have a rule about if players decline a national team call up and the reason isn’t accepted then they can be banned from playing in Spain. The 1st time that ‘las 15’ went on strike, the federation accepted their reasoning which is why they could all continue playing at their clubs. This time they won’t accept the reason because its against Rubiales. The federation will fight the players till they either give up and go back, they retire or they leave the league
There are multiple authorities looking into it. I just don't have a lot of trust in fifa. exactly but I think this time if a different story because yhey managed to make t las 15 look like the evil guys good luck trying that now. I don't know about spanish media but here no one's with the federation and everyone with the players.

A Showdown for the Ages: AFL Grand Final - Collingwood Magpies vs. Brisbane Lions
Tumblr media
The Australian Football League (AFL) Grand Final is the pinnacle of Australian Rules Football, a day when two of the country's top teams go head to head in a clash of skill, strategy, and determination. In this article, we delve into the anticipation, history, and excitement surrounding the blockbuster matchup between the Collingwood Magpies and the Brisbane Lions.
The Magpies' Pursuit of Glory
Collingwood is a name synonymous with AFL success. They have a rich history dating back to 1892 and are one of the most successful clubs in the league. With 16 premierships to their name, the Magpies are always considered contenders for the title. This year, they have a talented squad led by captain Scott Pendlebury and coach Nathan Buckley, both of whom have their sights set on bringing another premiership cup to the club's illustrious history.
The Rise of the Brisbane Lions
On the other side of the coin, the Brisbane Lions are a relatively new franchise in the AFL landscape, formed in 1996 through the merger of the Brisbane Bears and the Fitzroy Lions. However, despite their short history, the Lions have achieved remarkable success, winning three consecutive premierships from 2001 to 2003. This year, under the guidance of coach Chris Fagan, the Lions have made it back to the Grand Final and are eager to add another chapter to their success story.
Key Matchups
The Grand Final is not only about the teams; it's also about the individual battles that unfold on the field. This year, fans can look forward to some thrilling matchups:
Scott Pendlebury vs. Lachie Neale: Two of the league's best midfielders will go head to head in the battle for supremacy at the center. Pendlebury's class and poise against Neale's relentless ball-winning ability will be a spectacle to watch.
Taylor Adams vs. Dayne Zorko: These two midfield bullies will be pivotal in their respective teams' efforts. Adams' toughness and contested ball-winning skills will be matched against Zorko's agility and creativity.
Mason Cox vs. Harris Andrews: In the forward line, Collingwood's Mason Cox, known for his towering presence and marking ability, will face the daunting task of competing against Brisbane's Harris Andrews, one of the league's premier defenders.
Historical Significance
This Grand Final carries a unique historical significance as it represents the clash between the old and the new. Collingwood, with its long and storied history, is the epitome of tradition and excellence in the AFL, while Brisbane, a relatively young club, symbolizes the league's expansion and growth beyond its traditional heartlands.
Both teams have their own compelling narratives – Collingwood seeking to add to their illustrious trophy cabinet, and Brisbane aiming to establish themselves as a modern-day dynasty. The result of this contest will shape the AFL's history and future.
The Fan Experience
The AFL Grand Final is not just about what happens on the field; it's also a festival of football for fans. Thousands will flock to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), while millions more will watch from their homes or local pubs, making it one of Australia's most-watched sporting events.
The atmosphere at the MCG is electric, with fans decked out in team colors, face paint, and waving banners. The pre-game entertainment is always a highlight, featuring top Australian musical acts. Whether you're a die-hard supporter or a casual fan, the Grand Final is an event that brings people together to celebrate their love for the sport.
The clash between the Collingwood Magpies and the Brisbane Lions in the AFL Grand Final promises to be a memorable showdown. It's a battle of tradition and history versus modern success and growth, with both teams having a lot at stake. As the teams take to the field, the eyes of the nation will be fixed on the MCG, awaiting the crowning of this year's AFL champion. Regardless of the outcome, one thing is certain – the 2023 AFL Grand Final will be a spectacle of Australian Rules Football at its finest.

Big Harry Is Ailing by Jack Evans
The Argus, Saturday July 21, 1951
I took the text because the article shape is so awkward.
*cues in Sad Henry music*
Tumblr media
BIG HARRY IS AILING By JACK EVANS
HEAVY HARRY, the bad boy who later become the pride of the Victorian railways, is ill. Seriously ill. All 260 tons of him. Slumped in hospital - the repair sheds at Newport workshops, Victoria's only H220 engine could hardly raise steam above a whisper yesterday.
Heavy Harry, built at Newport - the heaviest locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere, is the only one of its type in Australia. His massive size and varied adventures made him pride of the rail engine fleet during World War II.
"Overwork, that's what caused it," he gasped yesterday. "I've got something wrong with my boiler." He said sadly: "You know, you're the first visitor I've had since I came to hospital. No one cares."
Work Of Two
"Why, Mr. Hyland, Transport Minister, was proud to drive me when I was launched in '41. Kiddies flocked to see me when I went on exhibition. "But as soon as you get sick you're forgotten. "In 10 years I've travelled more than half a million miles for the Railways. And I've pulled millions of tons of freight between Albury and Melbourne, doing the work of two engines."
He added, indignantly: "These new R Class engines are getting all the limelight now. Running around painted red and black, with all the glamor of Essendon footballers "
"And letting girls ride on their footplates. I was brought up better than that, and I've never worn anything but decent black all my life!
"Going to haul passenger trams from Bendigo, are they? Bah! When the Railways got into a jam with the Spirit, who did none Help they yell for? Heavy Harry! "They tell me those R Class engines stole the show in the Engineering section at the Festival of Britain. They sound more like mannequins instead of machines. "And boasting about their mechanical stokers! Let me tell you, I had the first mechanical stoker in the whole of Victoria. And the best! "I heard my boss, Commissioner Wishart, say that 70 of them -were coming from England. And half-a-dozen streamlined diesels from U.S.A.
"What about accommodation problems? He wants to remember there is a shortage of engine round-houses here." Harry brightened up towards the end of the interview.
"I'll be back on the track soon," he prophesied. "All 92ft. 6in. of me, and fighting fit. "Those glamor jobs had better hunt a quiet siding. If I meet them on a foggy night I'll show them that Old Harry hasn't lost his punch."
A couple of notes:
Jack Evans seems to be using the character of Heavy Harry to critique the VR, which is entirely valid since the railways were about to get absolutely slaughtered by our own native version of Beeching and didn't recover for another 60 years.
The North British Works-built Hudson R-class "glamor jobs" they talk about weren't bad engines, just wholly unsuited to the jobs VR assigned to them, which were goods trains rather than express passenger trains like they were built for.
(And they're Scottish, Harry! They were built at Glasgow! You know this!)
They did bear a scarlet and black color scheme... possibly to connote in a new era their passenger engine status (red, used on express passenger locos in the pre-Clapp era on A2s and other passenger locomotives), wedded to standard VR black.
Tumblr media
(Hudson R 707 "City Of Melbourne")
The Lancastrian built J-Classes, the last steam engines built for VR, also bore this scarlet and black scheme.
Essendon Football Club were the glamor team of the Victorian Football League (Australian Rules football) at the time, having appeared in almost every single Grand Final since 1941, which is kinda funny that he gives the Rs a serve for their color scheme... as I have Harry as an Essendon supporter in my OC headcanon, lol. (strong IRL historical associations between Essendon and Heavy Harry).
Tumblr media
(Outside of Essendon Railway Station, bearing a photo of ‘Harry on the Express to Albury at Essendon, 1949’… old timers living here would recall Harry shaking the earth as he passed).
Him threatening to bash the "glamor jobs" though... is dead on like my OC Harry! Cranky, prone to melancholia, painfully aware of how alone he is. That is Heavy Harry.
Also:
"Overwork, that's what caused it," he gasped yesterday. "I've got something wrong with my boiler." He said sadly: "You know, you're the first visitor I've had since I came to hospital. No one cares."
"I SUFFER DREADFULLY AND NO ONE CARES"
Both rebellious, troublesome engines with issues.
Canonically both melancholy and lonely engines with wide angry streaks.
Both are fairly unique engines. Harry is the sole Pocono with a third cylinder that exists, sole member of his class. Henry was a failed hybrid turned Black Five, the sheer fact of this makes him fairly unique.
Both seem fond of flowers (see the illustration in my earlier Heavy Harry post).
Both he and Henry were originally meant to be express passenger locomotives but turned to the purpose of night/early-morning fast goods.
Both are fond of their "special coal" (Harry worked best on the Oz version of Welsh coal, Maitland coal).
"Harry" is a variant of the name Henry.
This particular article was put out less than two weeks after the publication of the book "Henry the Green Engine", on the 10th of July 1951.
Neither seem interested in ladies, canonically.
The little drawing they put in it is basically Henry…
Just sayin'! If Twin Flames existed... It’d be these two. Har’ is basically an Oz version of Henry…
So fucking weird when you find such off-kilter content about something you are interested in. Also, H220 and its the 22nd of the month so...
