I felt like sharing some good news. I mean, woylies are still critically endangered, but a population rebound is still good news.

absolutely horrified by what happened in Sydney today
for the non-australians here’s a tldr: a man with a knife stabbed more than 10 people, including a baby, in one of the countries biggest shopping centres, before being shot dead by a nearby police officer. 7 people have been confirmed dead and at least 8 are injured.
the news is comparing it to the last major killing in australia’s history (the port arthur massacre that famously lead to strict gun laws in australia)
of course twitter is being its usual cesspool but there’s one thing for certain: had the man had a gun instead of a knife, so many more people would have been killed.

As horrifying as the attack at Westfield Bondi Junction was, it's also disturbing how many people's immediate response to hearing about it was to blame Muslims and call for deportations and revenge attacks. I forget how much racism and hate there is in this country sometimes.

So here in Australia we have a referendum coming up to change the constitution to have a body in parliament to represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. This is a minority who gets screwed over a lot by the majority white government, so representation and political power would help, yes?
As you can guess, right wing people are losing their fucking minds and spending A LOT of money on advertising and campaigning about why this is terrible and will destroy the country and also pointless and won't do anything.
My partner made a great point that if these people really believed this wouldn't do anything, they wouldn't be sinking so much money into trying to stop it.
And the ads are absolutely bonkers. I got one that was like "Indigenous people don't need representation in government. The government can't change your life, they don't control you! Only you control your life! You're the only person who can improve your life!"
Like, what a wild take. Like, yeah, control your destiny, but not having a government that regularly decides against your interests probably doesn't help with that??
Also a great one where a woman says how she is Aboriginal and represents Aboriginal people and speaks for them, but also doesn't believe in race says we are all the same on the inside! Also that having Aboriginal representation in government is basically apartheid.
It is... Not great

I'm loving seeing all of the stories of Nic Cage just rocking up at regular businesses in Australia and everyone being surprised to see him
Like I legitimately found out he was filming in WA because this asian supermarket were so excited to see him buying like $400 worth of kimchi and vegetables, amazing.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-10-18/nt-parliament-lowers-age-of-criminal-responsibility-to-10-law/104480034?utm_source=abc_news_app&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_campaign=abc_news_app&utm_content=other
We all in Australia knew this was coming, but yep it just happened. The CLP kept their most moronic election promise. Sending 10 year olds to jail doesn't work. Even the previous NT government's limit of 12 is too low. The age of criminal responsibility in Australia needs to be higher. 14 or 15 at the minimum, probably more likely 16-18. Even the PRC is better than NT on this (PRC is 12 for deliberate homicide, 14 for manslaughter, rape, arson, robbery drug trafficking & explosion, 16 for other crimes).
Note that I'm note claiming my own state of QLD is any better than NT. It's also 10 here. The only nuance we have is that it was never higher than that, we never lowered the age of criminal responsibility, it was just always ridiculously low. Both QLD & NT need to raise their age of criminal responsibility (as does the rest of Australia). Most children aren't capable of understanding the long-term consequences of their behaviour. The parts of the brain adults use to understand that aren't fully developed in children.

What happened in The Newsreaderland 37 years ago today?
Helen, Dale and Noelene nailed their breaking broadcast on the whim, Helen got her position back and an office alliance was beautifully formed. Certainly, the 29th January 1986 was a historic and personal day to remember for our Newsreader crew.
Tumblr media
It has also been 37 years today (29th January in Australian time, 28th January in American time) since the Challenger Disaster happened. These poor astronauts and their loved ones! The footage is still devastating to watch, and our show depicted it poignantly.
We also remember these seven today, and their bravery for scientific greatness. Ellison Onizuka. Christa McAuliffe. Gregory Jarvis. Judith Resnik. Michael J. Smith. Francis "Dick" Scobee. Ronald McNair.
Here is a real Australian news broadcast from the day of the Challenger Disaster - an ABC news bulletin from Brisbane, with newsreaders Ron Markland and Janet Wilson, and a cross to newsreader for the Australian ABC in the US; Richard Palfreyman. I find it interesting that in our show, Geoff accused Helen of being too emotional on air, but the newsreaders in this real bulletin (especially Palfreyman) also showed their sadness on air too. It’s very emotional how Palfreyman read out the list of victims and the families they were going to leave behind. Made me tear up, that’s for sure.
