Phil Salt to lead after injured Jos Buttler ruled out of T20I series
England will be without their captain Jos Buttler for their T20I series against Australia after he was diagnosed with a recurrence of a calf injury that has kept him out of action in the English summer. England are set to play 3 T20Is against a visiting Australian side from September 11 to 15. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said opening batter Phil Salt will stand in as captain for the T20i series.
Tumblr media
Jos Buttler is also doubtful for a 5-match ODI series between England and Australia, scheduled to be played from September 19 to 29. England have not played white-ball cricket since their disappointing semi-final defeat to India in the T20 World Cup 2024.
Jos Buttler was backed by the selectors and management to keep his job despite the below-par campaigns in ODI and T20 World Cups in 2023 and 2024, respectively. However, his return to action has been delayed due to the recurrence of the injury. The England skipper has not played competitive cricket since the T20 World Cup semi-final on June 27.
"Surrey all-rounder Jamie Overton has been called up as a replacement in the T20 squad. The three-match IT20 series is set to begin next week at the Utilita Bowl, Southampton, on 11 September 2024. Additionally, Essex batter Jordan Cox has been added to the ODI squad as cover," the ECB said in a statement. Harry Brook is expected to lead the ODI team if Jos Buttler fails to recover from the injury, according to The Guardian.
England Men's IT20 Squad: Phil Salt, Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Sam Curran, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Saqib Mahmood, Dan Mousley, Jamie Overton, Adil Rashid, Reece Topley, John Turner.
England Men's ODI Squad: Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, John Turner.

Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali left out as England enter new white-ball era
Sign up to our free sport newsletter for all the latest news on everything from cycling to boxing Sign up to our free sport email for all the latest news Sign up to our free sport email for all the latest news Jonny Bairstow and Moeen Ali could have played their last games for England after being dropped in a shake-up of the white-ball set-up. Matthew Mott was sacked as head coach of the limited-overs side last month after disappointing title defences in the ODI and T20 World Cups and the appetite for change has continued with the removal of two senior men sharing over 400 caps for the forthcoming series against Australia. Five uncapped players have been called up for Marcus Trescothick’s first assignment as interim coach, with left-arm seamer Josh Hull, all-rounder Jacob Bethell and pace bowler John Turner selected in both formats, while Dan Mousley and Jordan Cox come into the T20 reckoning. Moeen has been an influential vice-captain to Jos Buttler in recent times but is now 37 and has acknowledged in the past that his international career was winding down. His role as a spin bowling all-rounder will be covered by his Warwickshire teammates Bethell and Mousley. Bairstow turns 35 next month but there is no such sense that he is ready to bring the curtain down on his England days. He was an integral part of the white-ball revolution that carried the side to World Cup glory in 2019, and scored back-to-back centuries against India and New Zealand in must-win games at that tournament. He lost his Test spot earlier this summer after winning his 100th cap over the winter but made his desire to continue representing his country clear in an interview with the BBC during the Hundred. Bairstow bristled when quizzed about his future, telling former Test captain Michael Vaughan: “All I want to do is play for England. End of. You don’t need to ask me that do you? I think you’ve known me for long enough to know that.” Despite having around 14 months left on the two-year central contract he signed last October, it seems clear England are looking to move in a different direction and empower the likes of Will Jacks. Chris Jordan has also been moved on while Liam Livingstone has retained his T20 spot but misses out on the 50-over matches. Another eye-catching pick is that of Durham seamer Brydon Carse, who completes a three-month ban for historical betting offences on Wednesday. He has not played competitively since May 10 due to his suspension but has been offered an instant return by the England and Wales Cricket Board. No red-ball regulars have been considered for the three-match T20 series which starts in Hampshire the day after the final Test against Sri Lanka, though Hull and Cox are involved despite being part of Brendon McCullum’s squad. Harry Brook, Gus Atkinson, Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith and Matthew Potts will take a short break before joining up with Trescothick’s ODI team for the five-match series. Joe Root is not included but the PA news agency understands his omission is simply a case of workload management ahead of a busy winter. Zak Crawley, Ben Stokes and Mark Wood are all out injured but Saqib Mahmood, who conquered his own long-term fitness issues to play a starring role in the Hundred final, returns. England T20 squad to face Australia: Butter (c), Archer, Bethell, Carse, Cox, S Curran, Hull, Jacks, Livingstone, Mahmood, Mousley, Rashid, Salt, Topley, Turner. England ODI squad to face Australia: Buttler (c), Archer, Atkinson, Bethell, Brook, Carse, Duckett, Hull, Jacks, Potts, Rashid, Salt, Smith, Topley, Turner. Source link via The Novum Times

A look At Team India's Form, Top Performances, Key Talking Points Ahead Of T20 WC
Despite the talks around strike rate and lack of great pace bowling options, Team India is heading into the ICC T20 World Cup starting from June 1 with the most series wins and fine performances under their belt.
India will start their T20 World Cup campaign on June 5 against Ireland at the newly constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York.
Here is a look at Men in Blue's form and statistics, since their T20 WC semifinal loss to England by 10 wickets in November 2022, ahead of the campaign:
-India tour of New Zealand (2022)
India won the rain-effected three-match T20I series under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya by 1-0, with the highlight being a knock of 111* in 51 balls by Suryakumar Yadav in the second T20I and four-wicket hauls by Arshdeep Singh and Mohammed Siraj in the third rain-affected T20I.
-Sri Lanka tour of India (January 2023)
India won this three-match T20I series by 2-1 to kickstart the home season with a bang. The highlight of this series was once again, a knock of 112* in 51 balls by Suryakumar in the third T20I and some fine all-round performances by Axar Patel.
-New Zealand tour of India (January-February 2023)
Yet another fine series win for India by 2-1, coming back after being 1-0 down in the series. The highlight of this series was a fine 126* in 63 balls by Shubman Gill, the batters' first T20I century in the third T20I and a fine show by Indian pacers that skittled NZ out for just 66 in pursuit of 235 run target set after Gill's ton, including Hardik Pandya's four-wicket-haul.
-India tour of West Indies (July-August 2023)
This is the only blip in India's T20I resume after the T20 WC. After securing the Test and ODI series, India was expected to win the T20I series as well, with a young Team India around. However, West Indies players fought really well in what was a tight, back-and-forth series to win it 3-2, winning the fifth and decider T20I match.
A major taking point of this series was the emergence of Tilak Varma, who batted with maturity and elegance beyond his age, top scoring for India with 173 runs in five matches at an average of 57.67, with a half-century.
-India tour of Ireland (August 2023)
This series served as pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah's comeback to the national side after battling injuries and he was appointed as a captain of a young Indian side in the absence of Hardik Pandya. India won the series 2-0. This series saw the international debut of India's newest finisher and sensation, Rinku Singh.
-Asian Games Hangzhou (September 2023)
India secured a gold medal at the event, winning the gold on the basis of their seeding as their final with Afghanistan did not go further due to rain. A 49-ball century by Yashasvi Jaiswal was the big highlight from the competition.
-Australia tour of India (November-December 2023)
The series was conducted after India's loss to Australia in the World Cup finals, with both teams fielding a young side, with the main squads being rested after the tournament. India won the series 4-1, with some fine performances from youngsters like Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, skipper Suryakumar Yadav etc. Gaikwad was the top run-scorer for India, with 223 runs in five matches with a century and fifty. Spinners Ravi Bishnoi (9 wickets) and Axar Patel (6 wickets) also delivered some fine performances.
-India tour of South Africa (December 2023)
Team India travelled to South Africa under the leadership of Suryakumar Yadav. The series ended with a 1-1 draw as one match could not be played due to rain. A fine 68 by Rinku Singh in the first T20I and a fourth T20I century by Surya in the second T20I along with a five-wicket haul from Kuldeep Yadav were major highlights, performance-wise.
-Afghanistan tour of India (January 2023)
Afghanistan's first international series against India marked the return of veterans Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma to the T20Is after the team's loss in the 2022 WC semis. India won the series 3-0. The highlights of the series were twin half-centuries from Shivam Dube, a scorching fifth T20I century by Rohit, a knock of 121* in 69 balls, with 11 fours and eight sixes in the final game, some stunning fielding by Virat and a cameo of 29 in 16 balls that displayed his new, attacking attitude.
Some talking points for India heading into the tournament:
-Red-hot form of Virat Kohli (741 runs in 15 games), Jasprit Bumrah (20 wickets in 13 matches) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), with the rise in former's strike rate and six-hitting being a big highlight.
-Poor form of all-rounder Hardik Pandya (216 runs and 11 wickets in 14 games) in the IPL and diminishing of his finishing/six-hitting abilities
-Skipper Rohit Sharma's (417 runs in 14 games) disappointing strike rate of just 127.84 against spin in IPL 2024 and six dismissals in the tournament. He also had a very inconsistent run in the tournament.
-Bowlers like Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh (19 wickets each), and Mohammed Siraj (15 wickets) are among the wickets in IPL 2024, delivering some fine performances but are prone to inconsistency and erratic line and lengths.
-Absence of a proper, consistent finisher in Rinku Singh in the squad of 15.
Top performers for India during this phase:
Suryakumar Yadav: 857 runs in 20 matches and 19 innings at an average of 53.56 and a strike rate of 161.39, with three centuries and five fifties, best score of 112*.
Yashasvi Jaiswal: In 17 T20Is for India, Jaiswal scored 502 runs in 16 innings at an average of 33.46 and a strike rate of 161.93, with a century and four half-centuries. His best score was 100.
Arshdeep Singh: Leading wicket-taker for India, with 33 wickets in 25 matches at an average of 23.09 and an economy rate of 9.10, with a best of 4/37.
Kuldeep Yadav: 15 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 14.33 and an economy rate of 13.50, with a best of 5/17.
Rinku Singh: 356 runs in 15 matches and 11 innings at an average of 89.00 and a strike rate of 176.24, with two half-centuries and best score of 69*.
India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj
Reserves: Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed and Avesh Khan.

Bangladesh’s cricketers are utilizing the facilities of the same hotel in Dhaka as the Australians, observing Alisa Healy closely, and gathering crucial information about how one of the world’s best conducts her business.
Australia is in town for three limited-overs One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three Twenty20 series starting Thursday, and their arrival has stirred excitement.
Bangladesh skipper Negar Sultana said, “They are icons of the game so our players are eager to meet them
“Our players are already heading to their table for breakfast. This communication is crucial for team building. We see them as role models, so playing with them is a huge gain.”
This is Australia’s women’s team’s first bilateral tour to Bangladesh, so there is extensive interest among fans and media starting from players. Hilli, the opposite number, said they also want to learn from Bangladeshi players, especially considering the conditions they may face on this tour and with the T20 World Cup scheduled here at the end of the year.
I am truly proud of this team, who take playing as a bigger responsibility,” said Hillis
“It doesn’t just go one way, but there’s an opportunity to learn from both sides. Let’s talk about the game in general. To gain some crucial experiences, and it’s not just for their side.”
I think it goes both ways. The girls are genuinely excited to be part of this series.” I hope those conversations will be there. I had a chat around the toaster at breakfast today, so much more to look forward to.”
Fatigue is something that has touched Hilli, as some Australian players are just coming off the back of the recently concluded WPL in India, where they were busy with national commitments. “I think there’s a different level of battery power around our group at the moment,” she said. “I think it’s part of modern cricket. That’s exactly what’s happening down the line. Managing playing around the globe for 12 months and managing those expectations is becoming a real challenge.”
We’ve got Tala Vlamink back in our squad after a long time. Sophie Molineux has returned to the group
There’s plenty to look forward to. If you feel a bit exhausted, there are some players here who are absolutely smashing it as Australians, ruining their interior straight away. The group is genuinely excited being here and excited to play as Australians again, which I think is the tip.”
In this regard, Sultana mentioned their bowling as their strength against Australia. She also highlighted the big picture of playing at home against Australia. In the last 12 months, Bangladesh has been quite competitive, particularly closing the series against India with two white-ball series victories. They won a T20 series and an ODI series against Pakistan and also won two matches in South Africa.
In Nottinghamshire, Ben Lister and Fazalhaq Farooqi have been signed to replace Shahin Shah Afridi
Nottinghamshire has signed New Zealand’s left-arm seamer Ben Lister and Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi for the T20 Blast group stage this season to ensure their availability for the success of Shahin Shah Afridi. Lister, who has won 13 limited-overs caps for his country, will not be seen in their World Cup plans, and it is believed that before Farooqi becomes established, they will join Notts in the first eight matches of the Blast group stage this season. And, given the uncertainty at the Afghanistan Cricket Board, Farooqi will make his county cricket debut before leading Afghanistan’s seam attack at the T20 World Cup.
Shahin, who took 22 wickets in 14 matches for Notts last season, including four in an over against Birmingham Bears, will be unavailable for the Blast this summer due to his commitments in leading Pakistan, leaving Notts with two alternatives
Notts head coach Peter Moores said in a press release, “The success Shahin had with us last year has made those overseas options available again.” “It creates a different challenge for the batsmen. Between Ben and Fazalhaq, we have shown that wicket-takers can make an impact at crucial moments in the game, which we still are.”
Ben is an exciting talent who has established himself on the world stage after consistent domestic performances
He has made a difference for the teams he has played for and there’s a possibility of doing the same with us. His presence in the group stage will be crucial amidst the run-in.”
Notts finished fourth in the North Group last year and were eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual champions Somerset. After the departure of Samit Patel (Durham) and Jack Brooks (Somerset), they will have a new-look Blast squad where Stephen Mulaney is expected to lead primarily for the second eleven.
After signing a lucrative deal to play for Galle Gladiators in the Lanka Premier League, Alex Hales will also be unavailable for the group stage, where Jack Haynes, Dillon Pennington, and Josh Tongue have all joined Worcestershire from the Orchids. New Zealand’s Will Young will be set up for T20 Internationals and Joe Clarke will lead the T20 captaincy.
When Western Australia (WA) makes historic hat-trick bids as Tasmania aims to break the 11-year drought
Western Australia’s skipper Sam Whiteman on Wednesday advanced for the media conference before the Sheffield Shield final, knowing full well that barriers of questions lay in his path.
On Tuesday, a bombshell exploded late when WA opener Cameron Bancroft withdrew from the final against Tasmania due to a bike accident leaving him unconscious. It marked a setback for WA, who have been striving for their first hat-trick of Shield triumphs since the late 1980s.
Even the iconic WA team of the 1990s, although Test greats, hadn’t managed this feat despite boasting several players. Victoria alone has clinched the Shield three times in the past 20 years from 2015-17
It’s evidently a rare and hard-earned achievement because WA may struggle to prove itself in an injury-hit season. Frontline quicks Jason Behrendorff, Lance Morris, and Matt Kelly have only played a handful of Shield matches between them, none available for the final.
Turner’s career has turned on its head through surgery in December following an injury sustained while fielding.

SA women hope to turn fortunes against Australia on the Down Under tour
The South African women’s cricket team has a mountain to climb when they face Australia on home soil in a multi-format tour from January 27 to February 18.
Of course, there’s a sense of vengeance in the air after the Proteas were defeated by the Aussies in the final of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup at Newlands in Cape Town last year.
Tumblr media
The Down Under tour will include three T20 Internationals and three One-Day Internationals. The two countries will then play their first-ever test match.
Australia now leads both the T20I and ODI global rankings, leaving the Proteas (3rd in the ODI rankings and 5th in the T20I rankings) with a tough task. South Africa’s best ODI result versus Australia was a stalemate in November 2016, and they are 0-7 in T20Is.
The Proteas, led once again by Laura Wolvaardt as captain, need every bit of opposition they can get as they prepare for the September 2024 T20 World Cup in Bangladesh. The return of Chloé Tryon, who was away on recent international duty, strengthens the team. Ayanda Hlubi, who was called up to the national team for T20I duty last year, will now play in some ODI matches in Australia.
Hilton Moreeng, the head coach, has voiced his faith in his team, stating that there is a nice balance between experience and youth.
We look forward to building on the fantastic year we had as a team in 2023. Our trip to Bangladesh ended well, and we were able to accomplish our goals and learn more about the game and the red ball.
The chosen squad is really competitive and well-balanced, and we are very confident heading into Australia since we also discussed our abilities with the white ball, where we are going, and what is needed.
Moreeng, who has been a coach for 12 years, just had his contract extended till the end of the 2023–2024 campaign. He’ll also be in charge of a home series against Sri Lanka beginning near the end of March after returning from Australia. The hunt is still on for his replacement.
The same 15 players that recently toured India, where they won the ODI and T20I series, will represent Australia against South Africa in the meantime. According to selector Shawn Flegler, they are excited to meet the Proteas since “South Africa were formidable opponents in the T20 World Cup final in Cape Town.”

Before ODI WC 2023, Ravichandran Ashwin gives a timely reminder of guidance and off-spinner value
The brilliant performance by Ravichandran Ashwin is making a strong case for himself before the ODI World Cup 2023 while giving a timely reminder of how lethal he can be. The spotlight has been on Ravichandran Ashwin ever since he was included in the ODI squad of Team India for the three-match series against the Australian cricket team.
Tumblr media
Having picked up a solitary wicket playing only in his second ODI in six years, Ashwin followed it up with a stellar spell that left the Australian middle order in tatters as they faced an uphill battle against India in Indore.
In the second ODI match, Team Australia had already lost Matthew Short and their captain before the rain break, and once play resumed, Ashwin took center stage to further hurt the handicapped visiting side.
He gave a timely reminder of the guile and value of an off-spinner in India’s squad, heading into a home World Cup.
Ashwin first took the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne and later dismissed David Warner as the Aussie opener was trying to bat right-handed and was hit plumb in front of the stumps in the process. Josh Inglis was also trapped by LBW shortly afterwards, and the three quick dismissals ensured India nipped the Australian comeback hopes in the bud.

IND vs AUS: India Wins Seventh One-Day Series Against Australia, Ashwin-Jadeja Shine After Iyer-Gill
With the series victory, India has turned the tables on Australia in this year's one-day series. Earlier this year, Australia had defeated India 2-1 in a three-match one-day series in March. The third and final match of the current series between the two teams will be played in Rajkot on Wednesday, September 27.
Tumblr media
India secured a series win against Australia by winning all three one-day matches. In the second match played at Holkar Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24, India won by 99 runs based on the Duckworth-Lewis method due to rain affecting the match. This marks India's seventh victory in bilateral one-day series against Australia. The last time they had defeated the Kangaroos was in a three-match series at their home ground in 2020, winning 2-1. In addition to the series win, India has avenged their one-day series loss to Australia earlier this year. In March, Australia had beaten India 2-1 in a three-match one-day series. The third and final match of the current series between the two teams will be played in Rajkot on Wednesday, September 27. Australia Restrained at 213 Runs Speaking of the match, Australia won the toss and chose to bowl first. India scored 399 runs for the loss of five wickets in their 50 overs. Due to rain, Australia had a revised target of 317 runs in 33 overs according to the Duckworth-Lewis method. The Kangaroo team was bowled out for 213 runs in 28.2 overs. India's Highest Score Against Australia In this one-day match, India achieved their highest score against Australia. Prior to this, India's highest score against Australia in ODIs was 383 runs, which they achieved in November 2013 in Bangalore. Moreover, this marks India's seventh-highest score in all one-day internationals. India's highest ODI score is 418/5 runs, which they scored against West Indies in December 2011 in Indore. This also happens to be India's second-highest score at the Indore ground. 'If I'm In Place Of Sanju, I Will Be Very Disappointed', Says Irfan Pathan On Samson’s Omission From ODI Series Against Australia
Tumblr media
Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan reacted to Sanju Samson's omission from ODI series squad against Australia, saying he would be bitterly disappointed if he was in Samson's position. India announced a 17-man for the three-match ODI series against Australia preceding the World Cup, in which stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav won't feature in the first two games. Reacting to India's squad announcement for the three-match series against Australia, Pathan wrote on X (formerly Twitter): "If I’m in place of @IamSanjuSamson right now, I will be very disappointed..." Surprisingly, Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad were preferred over Samson. Varma, who recently made his ODI debut, departed for just five runs in the Asia Cup 2023 Super 4 game against Bangladesh. Gaikwad, meanwhile, is set to lead the second-string India side in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China later this month. Samson, who was already omitted from the World Cup squad, was named as a reserve for the Asia Cup 2023 that recently concluded. The 28-year-old has 390 runs in 13 ODIs at an average of 55.71, including three half-centuries so far. The wicketkeeper-batter scored 51 off 41 in his last ODI outing against the West Indies. Samson has displayed his talent as a versatile batsman in the Indian team, but has not been given a consistent opportunity to shine. India squad for the first two OIDs against Australia: KL Rahul (cap), Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Mohammad Shami, Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna, Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar.
