31: Samhain

Well loves, we made it, Every damn day (except that first one, which I'll rectify when I consolidate) Thanks to @slowsweetlove for providing the Austin based jungle-gym for me to play on. And thanks to all ya'll for hanging out with me , and Austin and sometimes Callum for October.. Hawtober? Hmmm...

Those of you that like to read my mind smut, I'll be taking a digital break for a while. Y'know: touch some grass, do some knitting, bake some bread, paint, declutter, put up some preserves or something cool like that.

Warnings: missing the man, finding the man

You haven’t seen hide nor hair of Austin since those two weeks in New York.  He had pretty much moved out of his hotel and into your apartment for the duration of his stay.  He took you to plays, made you dinners and made sure a day didn’t go by without showing you that you mattered to him. That and he made sure your pussy stayed wet. You’d not had so much sex in your entire life. It was amazing. 

Then he was gone.  

Before he left, you two had agreed that, for now at least, you would keep it a ‘no strings attached’ kinda relationship. You had a whole bunch of work in the coming months and he was filming. He had explained that when he is working, he sometimes can’t really do anything else and usually his phone is taken from him.  He had texted you, off and on for a while, but it had been radio silence for some time. You knew he was filming in Hungary then here stateside somewhere. It was surreal and sometimes you felt like those two weeks were from someone else’s life. The lingering fear that it would be another ten years before you saw him again was kept only at bay by Callum. 

Cal had been far more communicative. He even popped into New York a couple times. Honestly he was far better at maintaining a friendship than Austin. 

“Yeah, it’s not like he doesn't care, he just gets caught up in creating character and the artist aspect of it all. Time kinda doesn't mean anything when he gets like that.  If you can handle that, you’ll be ok,” Cal had told you once at dinner. 

Funnily enough, neither of you were as driven to fuck without Austin there. You joked how he was the sexy lynchpin. 

Did you fuck anyway? Yeah, of course you did. But it was way more of a ‘friends with benefits’ feel than it had been with Austin.

Today though you are in the most unlikely of places. You are in Ohio for your cousin’s wedding. It was also Halloween, or Samhain, as she called it.

“It’s pronounced sow-een,” she kept telling anyone near with ears. She had this love affair with Halloween, excuse me, Samhain, so her wedding was gothy and occult themed. It was the only time she felt she could get away with it. Still there were grumbles from the relatives.  Skulls, ravens and ouija boards outfitted each table, complete with Tarot decks and black candles as wedding favors. 

She had arranged a palm reader and fortune teller  the way other people had DJ’s and photo booths.  The venu was out in a barn on her friends’ farm. You had come out that afternoon to help set it all up. The wedding wasn’t until after dark, of course. 

Her little sister, who was in her mid teens, had brought over a Ouija board and plonked down on the table where you were sitting and tasting the special "black widow" cocktail complete with black glitter and a red spherical ice cube. You thought it was a drink that tempted fate, and hoped it wasn't predictive of your cousins marriage to be.

"Play with me," she had asked, "it's not fun alone."

You agreed, what harm could it have really.

She asked things like:

Are there spirits in the barn? 'no'

Has anyone died in here? 'yes'

Am I crazy? 'no'

Have I met the person I'll marry?

The planchet wandered to ‘no’ for her and practically zipped to ‘yes’ for you. 

“Oooo, who is it! You have to spill, I’m dying to know!” she said wagging her eyebrows. She idolized you, living in the big city and making your own way in the world. You had promised her a trip to New York for a graduation present. She was definitely one of those black sheep of your midwestern family. Destined for something far bigger than marrying a local boy and popping out kids. 

“I don’t know, could be anyone,” you laughed, “I live in a city with eight million people.”  

“Ok, ok! Let’s try this. Ouija Board, where is this man?” she asks. 

O-U-T-S-I-D-E came the answer. 

“That’s unhelpful,” she made a sour face, “unless he’s like a forest ranger or something. Know any forest rangers?” 

“No,” You just laugh it off. Ouija Boards were supposed to be for talking to the dead. You are pretty sure that you aren't going to marry someone dead.

It was then that you heard the tell tale sounds of an old motorcycle in the driveway.

“Oh yeah, they said there was a movie being filmed about motorcycles and that they might be using the front drive to turn around in,” your little cousin says, walking towards the barn door. “Isn't that so neat, a movie, here!! I wonder if it has anyone famous in it. OMG that’d be lit! 

“I dunno, I’ll ask” you hear a deep voice outside. 

You turn just to see the silhouette of a tall man in the bright square of the barn door. 

“Excuse me, is there a restroom I could use here?” the timbre of the voice is unmistakable if layered with a Chicago accent. 

“Austin?” his name drops out of your mouth like a spell.

It’s bewitching, the way he strides into the barn, his heels thunking on the old wooden floor. The lights finally uncover his features, and Austin only has eyes for you.

“Is it you? Is it really you,” he says disbelievingly. 

“Me? It’s fucking you!” you retort, or try to. He is on you in seconds, gathering you in his arms. 

 He smells like cold air, motor oil and cigarettes. He kisses you, tasting faintly like whiskey.  The world falls away and it’s only you two. 

“I’ve been missing you,” he says, placing his forehead on yours.

“Me too, so much,” you breathe back, hardly believing this is real.

You stay there for the span of two breaths, until your little cousin squeals, “Oh my god it was right, he WAS OUTSIDE!”

In an orange prison jumpsuit and chains, a tall, lean drag queen writhed to a cover of “War Pigs” by Brass Against, which sounds like someone swapped Black Sabbath’s lead singer for a woman and added a highly caffeinated marching band. As she lip-synced, Hermajestie the Hung completed a dramatic strip tease down to an army fatigue jacket and fishnets, all to riotous cheers and a rain of dollar bills. 

It’s April at the Swan Dive on Red River in Austin’s club district, where “Tuesgayz” night LGBTQ+ gatherings—which include “Queereoke” sing-along sessions—are a tradition. For over a year, the Black-led drag troupe Vanguard, with an informal membership of about a dozen performers that includes both drag kings and queens, has opened each show with the same invocation:

“On our stage we proudly proclaim that Black lives matter, trans rights are human rights, no human is illegal, all bodies are beautiful, and my body, my choice.” 

Hermajestie—who described herself as a “postbinary, polyamorous, pansexual pot-smoking parent” and goes by “any pronouns but he/him”—explained later that she started each night the same way because she “realized that once I mention these things, the trash usually takes itself out.” 

(We are using performers’ stage names in this article to protect their privacy.)

Vanguard, she explained, serves as a “declaration and celebration of queer freedom, queer love, queer existence and queer solidarity.” The space she has created is often politically charged. Each night, she recounts the latest legislative attacks on queer rights, urging her audience to get involved. Tuesday’s routine culminated in her holding aloft the severed head of former President Donald Trump and hurling it into the audience (a similar stunt that earned comedian Kathy Griffin public censure shortly after Trump’s election). 

The members of Vanguard represent an evolution in drag. While elder performers were often cisgender, gay men, many of today’s queens are transgender or nonbinary and explore their identity through the art form.

Austin’s drag scene is thriving: From the heart of downtown to the Hill Country, patrons can attend events every day of the week, including late-night revues and brunches on weekends. One monthly show highlights new, amateur queens, another the elders of the community. Drag has made inroads in non-LGBTQ+ spaces as well—queens frequently perform at birthday parties, fundraisers, and, last year, at a new student orientation at the University of Texas at Austin. 

At the same time, drag is under attack. Senate Bill 12, scheduled to go into effect September 1, will levy fines against venues that host performances appealing to an ill-defined “prurient interest in sex” where minors are present; performers could also face up to a year in jail. The legislative affront goes hand-in-hand with protests and harassment from right-wing activists outside of nightclubs and on social media, where drag performers are frequently doxxed. While most performers remain defiant in the face of oppression, the growing pressure leaves them concerned for their future. 

(Editor’s Note: As of September 18, 2023, SB 12 is under a temporary restraining order while a judge rules on a lawsuit led by the ACLU of Texas.)

12-year-old performs at 76ers game

Taylor Swift of Wyomissing Hills was invited to sing the national anthem.

Taylor A. Swift, 12, of Wyomissing Hills, thought her 10-year-old brother, Austin K., might have been playing an April Fool's Day joke on her when he told her the Philadelphia 76ers invited her to sing the national anthem at an upcoming home basketball game.

But Austin was telling the truth, relaying the information from their father, Scott K., who phoned with the thrilling day-after-Easter news.

"My mom and I were just jumping up and down we were so excited," said Taylor, who sang the anthem just before tip-off of the Sixers game against the Detroit Pistons on April 5.

"I just really love doing that sort of thing," she said. "It is an adrenaline rush for me."

Swift, a sixth-grader at West Reading Elementary Center, sang the national anthem at a Reading Phillies game several years ago.

Last month she did another rendition at a basketball game at Wyomissing High School in which the Harlem Wizards played against the Wyomissing Heroes, made up of school faculty and other members of the community.

It was her performance at the Wizards' game that gave her the chance to sing at a much larger venue, Philadelphia's First Union Center, where 20,754 fans came to see the Sixers and Pistons play.

Scott Swift sent in a video of his daughter singing the anthem to the 76ers, hoping the team would recognize her talent.

Sixers manager of game operations Kathy Drysdale, who said she gets hundreds of videotapes from perform ers interested in singing the anthem at one of the team's exhibition games or 41 regular season home games, sat up and took notice of Swift.

"She has this fantastic voice that catches everyone's attention," Drysdale said. "Her voice is so strong and powerful at 12 years old. You look at her and think, 'Did that come out of her mouth?"

Swift left for Philadelphia right after school on April 5 with her parents, brother and a friend of her brother. They encountered lots of traffic and wound up making it to the arena just in time for her sound check at 5. Shortly after their arrival, team officials presented Taylor, Austin and Austin's friend with duffel bags full of 76ers merchandise, including basketballs, jerseys and hats. Taylor also received a jersey signed by some of the Sixers players.

After getting ready in a private dressing room, Swift was escorted by a security guard onto the court, which was adorned with a red carpet.

Her mother, Andrea F., admitted she was very nervous leading up to the anthem.

"They had a number of cameras all focused right around her and she was up on the big screen," Andrea said. "It's very, very scary as a mom to see your child out there."

Taylor was much more relaxed about the whole thing, experiencing few butterflies even as the lights were dimmed just moments before her performance.

"I was just practicing the first note over and over in my head," she said. Swift, who sang the final words of the anthem in the midst of deafening cheers from the crowd, said the whole experience was a big thrill. "All of these NBA players and all of these other people were looking at me," she said. "It was really a wonderful feeling."

Swift has been performing practically all of her life in local theater productions.

Next Friday and Saturday she will perform in Wyomissing High School's production of "The Sound of Music." Swift, whose maternal grandmother, Marjorie Finlay, Wyomissing Park, is a retired opera singer, has been pursuing a country music singing career. The aspiring singing star, who also plays electric guitar, performed with the Pat Garrett Band at last year's Bloomsburg Fair and has cut a country CD.

Late last month the Swifts traveled to Nashville, where they distributed the CD to record companies in the hope of landing a recording deal. When she is not busy performing. Swift enjoys spending time with her friends.

August 22 Important Dates

AKA my notes on The Astrology Podcast's August forecast, hosted by Chris Brennan and Austin Coppock.

July recap: The violent, explosive Mars-Uranus conjunction showed up in many prominent news stories last month. Here's a graphic showing its exactness over time by Madeline at honeycomb.co:

Though the conjunction went exact on the 15th, the orb is pretty wide, with the most dramatic events occurring from about July 10th-21st. This was on the fixed star Algol (the head of the demon), which is associated with the death of innocents on a broad level, and Austin provides some historical examples. The most prominent manifestation in July was the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, who was shot in the ear. Mars-Uranus was on his natal Midheaven (23♉), and closely square his natal Mars in the first house (26♌) which in turn conjoins his Ascendant (29♌). The Ascendant/first house connection makes this especially physically dangerous for him as the Ascendant is associated with one's body and physical health. As the highest point in a chart, the Midheaven is associated with public image and prominence, so in going up on a podium Trump really leaned into the transit in an inadvisable way. Chris mentions that there are some remediating factors from benefics that could explain why he survived the encounter an even got a dramatic rallying photo out of it. When the conjunction went exact on his Midheaven, though, the classified documents case against him was suddenly dismissed--a case started when Mars was on this point two years ago. Austin suggests that, due to a natal Sun-Uranus-Rahu conjunction, Trump is probably one of those people for whom Uranus, not quite universally benefic or malefic, works in his favor. The Mars-Uranus conjunction also hits the 10th house/MH of JD Vance, whose Ascendant is 27 Leo, very similar to Trump. Will he regret this choice and go back on his pick of running mate during the upcoming Mercury retrograde?

On July 17th, Biden announced he had COVID; this Mars-Uranus conjunction took place in his 6th house. (Last time Mars was in Taurus was the first time he got COVID.) It also squared his Sun (27♏) pretty closely--any president is playing the role of the Sun--and his Venus (28♏), which rules his 11th house of friends & allies. Indeed many within his own party began to call for him to step down from seeking another term around this time. He finally did so on the 21st, a conclusion to Saturn stationing retrograde on his Imum Coeli during the debate. The most recent time this happened was in 1968 when Lyndon B Johnson stepped down to let RFK run just days after a solar eclipse in Aries--the same sign as the total solar eclipse that darkened much of the US in April. Biden also stepped down during the Full Moon conjunct Pluto, which opposed his own natal Leo Pluto--last month our hosts had discussed how that generation may need to finally let go of power. Mercury (26♌) was also square Uranus (26♉) at the time, and indeed this was a shocking communication for many, including the Republican party which had just spent the last week strategizing how to beat him. Mars had also just entered Gemini, Biden's natal 7th house of partnerships and Harris's natal 1st, while Jupiter (12♊) sextiled Venus (12♌)--the most positive transit of the month. Thus we have the end of a political career for one candidate and the start of a new chapter for another--and hope for the Democrats now that they have someone other than an obviously senile candidate. Mars being copresent with Jupiter in Harris's first house heralds well for competition, and indeed she's more popular now than she ever was. Also notable is that Harris and Trump were both born on a Full Moon (as was RKF Jr!). On a mundane level, the Mars-Uranus conjunction squared the US Sibly chart Moon (27♒)...and Uranus will be there during the election cycle and beyond. Austin cautions that Uranus-Algol significations are not over just because Mars has now left the sign. The upcoming eclipse in September will likely bring more dramatic changes.

Another notable story is the Crowdstrike outage, the largest computer outage in history, affecting air traffic control, hospitals, and other heavy infrastructure. This occurred right as Mercury joined Mars & Uranus, and additionally entered the shadow period (degree to which he will regress) to his upcoming retrograde. The company is based in the path of the eclipse in April, which aligns with the path of Hurricane Beryl that ravaged much of the country in early July. Austin says as the sign of exaltation of the Sun, Aries eclipses are especially tough on leaders and indeed we have seen quite a few attempted and successful assassinations this eclipse season (said to be in effect for about 6 months). Other Mars-Uranus in Taurus stories include the Houthi drone attack near the US embassy in Israel and ensuing Isareli missile attack back on a Yemeni port, the ICJ ruling Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, a political leader assassinated in Ukraine, and student protests against the government in Bangladesh. Saturn-Neptune has brought some AI deepfake controversies, and on July 29th Biden proposed Supreme Court reforms including term limits and a code of ethics, which Chris connects to Jupiter (judges) & Saturn (constraints) coming within 5 degrees of an exact square. Austin connects Justice Department events to events in Leo, the 9th house (legal system) of the US Sibley chart, such as Mercury's upcoming retrograde. Jupiter squares Saturn in December and we may see some dramatic events with the Supreme Court then (in 2000 it decided the outcome of the election). Mars moves into Leo the day of the election and then stations early in December, further indicating confusing events around the US election late this year. It's also a recurrence of Venus opposing Jupiter on election day in 2000...but let's get to the forecast.

Chris breaks it into 4 parts: first, Mercury retrograde in Virgo and into Leo. The second week is dominated by Mars conjoining Jupiter in Gemini and squaring Saturn (which leads into the DNC...👀). The third week sees the Jupiter-Saturn square go exact, with Venus swooping in to activate Saturn, Jupiter, and Mars. Both benefics and both malefics are all struggling for dominance. Finally, at the end of the month Mercury stations direct sextile Jupiter, bringing some events to completion, while Venus leaves Virgo for her home sign of Libra. Mutable signs are especially affected this month, especially middle degrees.

August 4th - New Moon in Leo, Venus enters Virgo In the Sun's sign, this is an especially supportive New Moon with a sextile from Jupiter (15♊). Things are clearing up in the fixed signs! However, the impending Mercury retrograde in Virgo casts a shadow of impending confusion.

The New Moon also occurs with Venus in late Leo, which Chris points out is Donald Trump's ascendant and to expect further developments like reconsidering his choice of running mate.

August 5th - Mercury stations retrograde Mercury is already very slow at the beginning of the month, and stations at 4 degrees of Virgo, and will eventually bring this energy back into Leo/fixed signs as well. Common Mercury rx themes are revisiting ideas from the past, people coming back into your life, and rethinking decisions. Also delays, detours, setbacks, technical issues, travel disruptions, and for individuals moments of introspection. It's a good time to reevaluate the words we use to describe things. The station starts within squaring distance of Mars, suggesting it may start with conflict before things clear up during the cazimi on the 18th.

August 7th - Mercury (rx) conjunct Venus She gives him a helping hand early in his retrograde--a moment of sweetness or repair. Venus doesn't necessarily prefer to spend her afternoon this way, especially in her sign of fall, but it's helpful for Mercury (who's calling the shots). However, Mars and Jupiter are now already within 3 degrees of conjunction--the range at which we began to see dramatic events for the Mars-Uranus conjunction in July.

August 14th - Mars conjunct Jupiter, Mercury regresses into Leo Mars, Saturn, Jupiter, and Venus are all looking at another in one way or another in a T-square for much of the month. Mars and Jupiter can give us triumphant victory and enthusiasm--exceptional quarterback Tom Brady has this conjunction natally. Mars and Jupiter also represent war and peace respectively, which bodes ill for current conflicts. Explosions and guns are also signified here: the largest non-nuclear explosion, in a Beirut warehouse, occurred under a Mars-Jupiter square. Mars-Jupiter means aggressive expansion, but with Saturn poised to square each of them in turn later this month, we'll soon run into barriers. Beware excessive confidence; it can backfire. In economic significations, Obama signed in his 2009 stimulus package under this configuration, as did Congress in 2020 (this also influenced by other major configurations, including Saturn).

August 15th/16th - Mars square retrograde Saturn Mars-Saturn is traditionally one of the most difficult alignments due to their malefic natures. Keywords include frustration, blocks and restrictions, such as the lockdowns of March & April of 2020. Mars-Saturn is hitting the brakes and the gas at the same time (and occurs right after Jupiter-Mars had the pedal to the medal). We also see fighting authority or restriction, rebellion and repression, stress-testing structures and burnout after being pushed past our limits. Mars-Saturn will definitely help you discover your limits, with Mars pushing as Saturn brings the wall. We want Jupiter's offers and rewards, but we must move carefully through disputed terrain. Mars-Saturn is a helpful configuration for aggressive discipline and relentlessness. If you're pushing physical limits during this time, do so incrementally. Additionally, with Saturn in Pisces we've seen a lot of water disasters like the Key Bridge collapse and the submarine disaster. However, with Mars in an air sign we may see an overlap in difficulties across multiple modes of transformation, especially with Mercury retrograde. It's safe to say we'll see shipping issues during this time, and a patron in the chat suggests hurricanes. In politics and extreme manifestations, Mars-Saturn squares can indicate political assassinations like that of Shinzo Abe in 2022.

August 18th - Retrograde Mercury cazimi Occurring at 26 degrees of Leo, this is the halfway point of the retrograde and occurs shortly after Mercury squares Uranus. Things start to clear up and turn around in the retrograde story. However, now Venus starts activating all this Mars-Saturn-Jupiter stuff. She's applying to a square with Mars which is interrupted by contacts to other planets, but we'll be feeling the buildup to it in the background.

August 19th - Full Moon in Aquarius, Venus opposite Saturn (Rx), both square Jupiter Based on past events, Jupiter square Saturn may bring economic contraction despite optimistic unemployment/inflation reports in the US (A/N: imo whatever good reports Chris is seeing are definitely a total load). Regardless, some of the seeds planted in 2020 during the Saturn-Jupiter conjunction in Aquarius will come to fruition this month. Jupiter-Saturn keywords include the new vs. the old and optimism vs. pessimism, especially when configured by a square and working at cross-purposes. Jupiter raises possibilities while Saturn brings the grim reality--will one side win out in a compromise, or will we found ourselves at an impasse? Chris predicts this will affect the Democratic National Convention. Other keywords include the law and courts, being held back from progress, cutting back after aggressive expansion, and indecision if growth and boundaries can't be reconciled.

This Full Moon will bring dramatic endings and beginnings, as did the one in July with Biden stepping down. The DNC starts on this day, and Chris predicts some event in the preceding days will cast a shadow over it (as was the case with Trump's assassination attempt and the RNC). Venus opposes Saturn and squares Jupiter right on this lunation, just after a Mercury cazimi square Uranus, and the Full Moon itself squares Uranus. The Venus-Mars square will go exact right as the DNC ends--expected the unexpected at Harris's likely acceptance speech. Austin describes this as a switcheroo, where it feels like Venus-Mars and then pivots to Venus-Saturn before going to Venus-Mars again.

August 22nd - Sun in Virgo, Venus square Mars Venus-Mars squares brings passion, both for romance and fighting. Sex scandals often come to light under this alignment. Mars will pass 21Gemini22, the degree he's at in the Sibley chart, right before the square to Venus, so US politics will be affected strikingly. Mars-Venus can bring us a battle of the sexes and gender-based warfare, and if it's a Trump-Harris race we'll likely see these themes take prominence. The Venus-Saturn opposition also occurs right on Harris's own natal Venus (which rules her Sun) and Saturn (12th house ruler) is transiting her 10th house now, so we're definitely going to see big developments with her (Mars transiting her first house indicates conflict or competition).

There are a lot of parallels to 1968 right now: the nodes are repeating, with eclipses in the same signs, and the Venus cycle is repeating. Already mentioned is Johnson stepping down after an eclipse. We've also had high-profile assassinations and attempts again, student antiwar protests, and a repeat of DNC being in Chicago--in 1968 the convention was marred by police brutalizing antiwar protestors. We've also got another Kennedy running for president and may see a third-party candidate having significant effect on the election (our hosts go into detail on other examples). Austin reminds us that these events will affect the whole world. As other astrologers are also pointing out, none of the indicators point towards a simple, clear election for the United States.

August 28th - Mercury stations direct The chaos is beginning to die down at this point. Mercury stations sextile Jupiter (17♊) with reception, relieving some of the tension. Enjoy a brief respite after the August storm before those of the fall.

August 29th - Venus enters Libra She's been separating from the T-square and is now in a new sign. She's now moving towards a trine with Jupiter (and away from Saturn in Virgo!), bringing some support to us.

On September 1st, Uranus will station at 27 Taurus, intensifying his significations, and Pluto regresses into Capricorn for the final time (in ~200 years). Pluto enters Aquarius for good in November, ending a 15-year transit through Capricorn (since 2008-9). Mars also shifts into Cancer early September, setting up an extended stay in that sign and Leo.

Other Racquet took a village to develop…not to mention the steadfast duo of @austintatiouscheesecakesand @chait_daddy who continue to reach new heights in operations each step of the way. 

Other Racquet Social Club is an absolute celebration of what happens when an incredibly gifted team rallies around a shared vision for a space and its place in the community. THE 2025 CONFERENCE

April 3-5, 2025

This is the third international conference in the Archives of the Impossible series. The series is functioning as a community builder, but a community spread out across nations and transcending any professional or private category. We have had physicists, physical anthropologists, and biologists speak, but also archivists, experiencers, historians, philosophers, and humanists from literary theory, American military history, and analytic philosophy to the study of Buddhism, African American religions, and American-Mexican history.

The first conference featured our archival donors and announced the collection to the world. The second conference, on transdisciplinarity and transnationalism, featured a series of models or theories of anomalous phenomena from the arts, sciences, social sciences, and humanities. This third conference will focus on a slice of the phenomenon that is much in the media today--the UFO, now called the UAP (for Unidentified Anomalous Phenomenon, since many such objects are "transmedium" in nature, that is, they come out of the water or ocean).

The conference will be guided by several questions: What might be the traces of the influence of UAP or NHI (Non-Human Intelligence, an acronym especially popular in political and legal circles today, including in Congress) in the religious traditions of the past? How does this possibility change our understanding of religion – not only its past but also its present and future? What kinds of intellectual, socio-cultural and existential shifts does such knowledge ask us to make? What does the inquiry lend to new conversations between science and religion?

The registration for the 2025 conference event can be accessed here. Because these events are very expensive to host, and because we want to have more of them in the future, we are charging a registration fee of $175. This will not cover the full costs of the event, but it will help us cover some of our food and venue expenses. We will close the registration after 200 commitments, as our auditorium only holds enough space for that number. We will also include a live on-line version of the conference, which is not bound in the same way.

Dike Astraea Sun in Aquarius I (20-30 Jan. 2024) The Sun enters Aquarius I (which Austin Coppock called The Mark of Exile) on 20 January 2024 at 9:07 am EST and departs on 30 January 2024 at 5:13 am EST. While ruled by Saturn, this part of Aquarius is administered or governed by Venus, and thus it represents a type of cold, passionate desire that might be characterized as fury. The Mark of Exile speaks to this. In Hellenistic-era communities along the Egyptian Mediterranean, this was the season of Dike (sometimes called Dike Astraea from her appearance as the constellation Virgo).

Christmas and festive celebrations and shopping were disrupted in parks, malls, stores and public venues ,such as midtown Manhattan and London, by protestors declaring “Christmas is canceled.” Assaults and arrests were reported. Protests were also held on Christmas morning outside the homes of Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and national Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Efforts to shut down New Year’s celebrations were made in major cities.

The situation in Gaza was the ostensible motive but the actions were undertaken by pro-Palestinian groups as well as a wide array of communist and social groups including The People’s Forum and the Party for Socialism and Liberation. The support for “Palestine” given by climate change personality Greta Thunberg demonstrated the unity of these and other far left causes.

Another direct reflection of “Globalize the Intifada” protests were hundreds of bomb threats and swatting threats called in to Jewish institutions, apparently from outside the US. Violent protests were held outside of Jewish owned business in cities including Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. Property crimes directed against Jewish owned businesses and other sites in New York City also rose 85% in December. S

Shabbat services at Temple Beth Am in Los Angeles were relocated for the first time in history after a pro-Hamas demonstration was scheduled in a park across the street.

The House of Representatives also passed a resolution condemning the October 7 attack and stating that anti-Zionism is a form of antisemitism. The measure passed 311-14 but 92 Democrats voted “present.” The pro-BDS “Squad” comprised the no votes along with Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY).

The increasingly wide distribution of Muslim communities in the US and their growing political action around the single issue of opposing Israel is a growing factor in future electoral calculations, particularly in states such as Michigan, Virginia, and New Jersey.

At the same time pro-Hamas activists have continued to target Democrats. In one incident a Michigan Democratic Party holiday event was disrupted when members of the Palestinian Youth Movement and Party for Socialism and Liberation entered the venue to harass Congresswoman Shri Thanedar (D-MI). The resulting fight sent several individuals to the hospital. Congressman Ritchie Torres (D-NY) was harassed by pro-Hamas protestors at the 92nd Street Y who shouted “Ritchie Torres, you can’t hide, we charge you with genocide.” Pro-Hamas protestors also vandalized the offices of several Democratic Congressmen. as well as the home of Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA). The willingness to attack politicians is a grave escalation in the war against Israel in the US.

Miguel Atwood-Ferguson - Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1 - massive (52-track) new album with an amazing cast of guest musicians (Brainfeeder)

14 years in the making, “Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1” comprises 52 tracks / 3.5 hours of music composed, arranged and produced by Miguel with contributions from 50+ friends including Kamasi Washington, Thundercat, DOMi & JD Beck, Jeff Parker, Carlos Niño, Austin Peralta, Bennie Maupin, Gabe Noel, Jamael Dean, Jamire Williams, Burniss Travis II, Deantoni Parks, Josh Johnson, Marcus Gilmore and many more. Based in his hometown of Los Angeles, Miguel is one of the preeminent musicians, orchestrators, arrangers and composers of our time. “Les Jardins Mystiques Vol.1” is his long-awaited inaugural album. It presents us with a passionate statement of intent, a labor of love, and a realm of beautiful possibilities. “Les Jardins Mystiques” is a project that throws open and shares Miguel’s musical universe. It took shape over a dozen years, largely self-funded by Miguel, and showcasing his distinctly elegant musicianship (on violin, viola, cello and keyboards among other instruments) alongside his free-spirited dialogues with more than 50 instrumentalists. Volume 1 is the first in a planned triptych, which will collectively comprise ten-and-a-half-hours of original, refreshingly expansive music. Bennie Maupin, the legendary US multi-reedist whose repertoire includes Miles Davis’s fusion opus Bitches Brew, plays bass clarinet on the entrancing opening number, “Kiseki”. “Les Jardins Mystiques” reflects Miguel’s ethos that music is a natural, vitally unaffected life force. The titles across Volume 1’s tracks draw from international languages and traditions, including Spanish, Swahili, Sanskrit, Ancient Greek, Japanese and Hebrew, as well as the Buddhist practice that has been key to Miguel’s life since his twenties (“It’s very joyous and very hard, because it says that there’s no retirement age in human revolution,” he says). The tracks contrast in length, from “Zarra”’s vivid burst of analogue synths to the alluringly chilled melody of “Kairos (Amor Fati)”, yet there’s a gloriously unconstrained flow throughout, and each piece seems to unfurl and blossom into its own wondrous world.
