Austin A40 - A50 'Cambridge' : publicity brochure : Austin Motor Company, Longbridge, Birmingham : nd [c.1954] by mikeyashworth Via Flickr: The new Austin A40 and A50 range of saloon cars - known as the Cambridge - were first introduced in September 1954 and replaced the older A40 Somerset. The style seen here, the A50 having the same body design but a newer, larger engine, was in production until the MkII versions with Pinin Farina body design was introduced in 1959. The A40 designation had already been 'swapped' in 1958 when the smaller Cambridge was dropped and the marque given to the new Farina vehicle. The brochure is very lavish in its extent and use of colour and has several of these marvellously evocative illustrations - here the A50 speeding along a seemingly Alpine road with our driver, still wearing his hat, being admired by his passenger. Sadly the artwork does not appear to be credited but it is very much of the 'style' of the period.

Early Corgi Toys

Early Corgi Toys were produced by the Mettoy company, starting in 1956. These diecast models were known for their high quality and attention to detail. Some of the most popular early Corgi toys were models of British cars, such as the Ford Consul, Austin A50 Cambridge, Morris Cowley, Vauxhall Velox, Rover 90, Riley Pathfinder and Hillman Husky.

週末恒例車名の由来シリーズ。本日もイギリスの自動車メーカー、オースチンの車を調べて参ります。 本日は過去生産販売されていた小型乗用車、オースチン・A50ケンブリッジについて調べて参ります。 「ケンブリッジ」とは英語で「Cambridge」と記述して、イギリス南部、ケンブリッジ大学で有名な都市名になるとの事。 1954年から1957年まで生産販売されていたとの事で、こちらも「日産オースチン・A50」として輸入販売されていたのだそうです。 なるほど。こちらも都市名になるのですね。 [link] : Austin Cambridge – Wikipedia

Austin A50 Cambridge Saloon, 1959, by Nissan. During the 1950s Nissan built Austins under license for the Japanese market. The A50 Cambridge was the last Austin built in Japan and the car pictured top and bottom is the final car off the production line, on December 28, 1959. One appeared in the 1958 Japanese comedy movie Kyojin to Gangu (Giants and Toys), 2nd pic from the top is a still from the movie.
