Pen Pals
Summary: The withering rose never finds love. Right?
Pairing: Lord!Bruce Wayne x Lady!Reader; Lord!Clark Kent x Lady!Reader
Warnings: angst, unrequited love, unrequited feelings, regency au, mentions of rejection, a hint of fluff
A/N: This is an alternative version of Windfall with different characters.
A summer night dream, that’s what it was, and nothing else.
A summer filled with love letters and daydreams of a withering rose came to a sudden end.
Fall came much too soon. Along with the heartbreak caused by rejection.
Lord Wayne made you believe he’ll court for you when he returns from his summer residence. All the secrets you shared in your letters were for nothing.
He didn’t have the guts to look at you when he stepped inside your father’s house. Lord Wayne ignored your longing looks, and that you put flowers in your hair to impress him.
He told you so many times about his favorite flowers and you wanted him to know you read every line he wrote to you.
You wrung your hands and waited for him to mention your name, only to ask your father for allowance to court for someone else.
He didn’t say your name.
Flora. A beautiful name for a beautiful young woman. The name of your cousin, not yours.
He came to your home, but not for you. A man like him only courts for the pretty dames, young and polite. Petite and most importantly, without wit.
Lord Bruce Wayne came back only to court for your cousin, not you. Your heart broke into a million little pieces when you realized that you are not the woman he’ll ask to become his bride.
“Oh my, did you hear,” your cousin swoons, unbeknownst of your broken heart, “Lord Wayne invited me to go for a walk with him!”
“That’s wonderful,” you force a smile on your lips, and nod. “You shouldn’t let him wait,” you hastily say to make her leave. “You’ll make a beautiful bride.”
Flora smiles at you like she used to when she was much younger.
You’re like an elder sister to her, and you don’t have the heart to tell her how the man asking for her hand led you on…
“Dear Lady Y/N,” you read out loud before ripping another letter into pieces. You throw it into the fire and watch it turn into dust. Just like your hope for a future with the Lord. “He lied…”
You read another letter and another. He talks about his travels and never answers your questions. When you read the sixth letter you realize Lord Wayne only ever asked about your cousins.
“Oh,” you throw them into the fire to read the next one. Again, he asks about Flora’s favorite flowers. Back then, when the letter arrived, you believed he only tried to include your family. Now you know you were a source of information to him, nothing else.
Lord Wayne used you to find out what Flora likes, and how to court her. You talked highly about him to your father all summer long; only for him to ignore you, and the role you played in getting his happily ever after.
You stop reading the letters and throw them into the fire, along with the flowers you pressed for him during summer. You wanted to show Lord Wayne the ones you love the most. Another mistake you won’t do again.
The fire eagerly feasts on the dried flowers, and you start to cry. The poor flowers are just like you, withered and colorless.
“Goodbye, Lord Wayne,” you whisper as you throw the last letter into the fire.
“Lady Y/N,” Aurelia, the housekeeper calls for you. “Can you please come downstairs?” she politely asks. You know her all your life, and her tone tells you something must be wrong.
“Coming,” you softly say and wipe your eyes. You take a deep breath and decide to forget about your broken heart.
The moment Flora leaves your home to marry Lord Wayne, you won’t see much of him and her ever again.
The Lord lives secluded, far away from others. He won’t allow Flora to visit you often because he’s not a very sociable person.
That’s what you liked so much about him. You’re awkward around too many people too.
You open the door and leave the safety of your room to walk downstairs. You put on a fake smile as she tells you that someone came to visit.
“Lord Kent,” you curtsy and try to force a smile on your face. “What brings us the honor of your presence?”
“Lord Wayne asked me to join him for a visit at your father’s house,” Lord Kent politely replies. He gives you an honest smile and dips his head as the housekeeper seems to be glued to your side.
“You missed them by an hour, Lord Kent,” you reply, barely hiding your anger. “If you hurry you can catch up with them. But be aware, Lord Wayne already courts Flora. You must settle for Calista instead.”
“What? I-“ He’s speechless by your bluntness. “What if I wanted to court someone else?”
“Flora is taken, my Lord,” you force a pained smile on your lips. “They are both beautiful and well-behaved. One like the other, a rare flower you can plug. If you hurry, you can still catch up with them. Have a pleasant day, Lord Kent.”
You turn around to walk back upstairs. Aurelia holds back a chuckle as you ignore Lord Kent’s existence.
It’s impolite to not invite Lord Kent for tea, but your parents aren’t around, and you don’t want to end up being called something worse than a spinster.
“Lady Y/N,” Lord Kent says a little louder. “Please wait. I didn’t come here to court for Flora or her sister.” He steps closer and almost touches your shoulder. “Please look at me.”
You sigh and turn back around. “Lord Kent,” you meet his gaze, and let your eyes wander. His hair is a little longer, and a beard frames his handsome features. He's a little rougher around the edges since he's alone.
Some years back he lost his wife, and ever since then, he changed.
“Please let me explain my sudden appearance at your doorstep, my lady.”
“Lord Kent, this is inappropriate, and you know it,” you whisper. “We don’t have a chaperone around. Please tell me why you came here, and I’ll inform my father when he comes back.”
“Lady Y/N,” he clears his throat. Lord Kent nervously runs his fingertips through his locks, messing his hair up. “I came here to tell you that Lord Wayne’s intentions aren’t pure. The letters he wrote to you were…”
“What do you know about the letters?” You gasp and cover your mouth with one hand. “Please don’t tell me he showed you my letters. Please, Lord Kent. I…my father cannot know.”
“He only wanted to get to know more about Flora,” Lord Kent gently grabs your hand to hold it. “I found the letters and confronted him. I came here to make sure he won’t ruin your reputation.”
“I-“ you shake your head. “We only wrote a few letters. He was my pen pal during the summer. I burned all the letters now.” You give Lord Kent a pained smile. “I’m past him, and his lies.”
Lord Kent nods slowly. He watches your lips wobble and sighs deeply. “He should’ve never led you on.” His hands twitch when you pout. “A real man would properly court you, Lady Y/N.”
He lifts your hand to bring it to his lips. Lord Kent brushes his lips over your knuckles before placing a chaste kiss on your skin.
“I—”
“I am such a man, Lady Y/N,” he wraps his large hands around yours, dwarfing your hand with his own. “I will return when your father is back.”
He releases your hand, and bows as he says his goodbyes.
You’re too stunned to even breathe. Did he just imply that he wants to court you?
You can only watch Lord Kent walk away. He has a spring in his step, and you wonder if you are the reason.

lorenzotl SHE DID IT! I can't describe in words how proud I am of her, she proved to everyone - first of all to herself that she is worthy of it! And it was worth the tears we endured, the late-night Facetime calls in which she drops out of university and returns home, the terrible and difficult exams. My heart is overflowing with joy for my princess. I love you incredibly much, Aura. Nous sommes fiers de toi! (We are proud of you)

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _

rtxrt #31 with Violet
#31. Flower | Violet
From a distance, Aurelia could not tell the size of the pilot, only that in comparison to the others, they seemed rather... small. And now, at the victory feast, she got a better look at the second-runner up of the tournament. The terribly petite woman, with her silvery hair, pale eyes, and short stature, ought to have been swallowed up whole by the bulky teal and silver armor she wore.
But Violet de Licorne was anything but swallowed. She moved in the armor with ease, the helmet tucked under her arm so that she could wear her crown of cornflowers unimpeded. She extended a hand out to a fellow knight, who gripped it and dragged her in. A surprise laugh was shared, and then a fond pat on the shoulder.
"A shame," Lady Enna said, a hand coming to rest on Aurelia's elbow, "Violet was such a biddable young woman. A tragedy that the death of her father and older brother forced her to take on the burden of the de Licorne Throne Mechanicum."
"It does not seem a tragedy to me at all, Lady Enna," replied Aurelia, casting a sidelong look at her previous minder, before her gaze returned to the small woman, who had turned her face to a window and the sandy tournament grounds beyond. A scar crossed over Violet's eye, a shimmering glint on her pale countenance. "It seems instead that she has found a passion. There is no shame in that."

My head cannon for my Rook’s facial tattoos. My warden also has the same tattoo, it’s a tradition in the Cousland family dating back to when Highever was still a part of Amaranthine.
The Bann was out walking among his people when he heard a man complain about some matter that he needed to bring before his lord. The Bann turned to this man and asked him to make his petition now, the man laughed and claimed that he could not make his petition before the Bann’s lowly servant.
It was then the Bann realized his people did not know him or his family, and so he went and marked his face, so that all who saw him would know him for who he was.
The process was painful but the mantle of leadership should not come without pain, and he claimed the price of recognition and scrutiny is one that all who wish to lead must pay.
It became tradition in the Cousland family on the 16th name day for those who wished to lead to receive the facial tattoo. Over time it was bestowed upon any in the family who wished to have it, though only the eldest children usually deigned to receive it.
Each of Marissa’s 4 brothers opted to receive this tattoo, and Marissa (as always) followed suite. She believes the distinct facial markings contributed to their assassinations during Arle Howe’s coup, and she was adamantly opposed to her daughter, Aurelia, receiving them.
Aurelia, in turn, received her markings in secret on her 19th name day when she left the Crows to join Varric in his fight against Solas. She decided on that day to stop running from herself and confront herself anew at every chance.
“Let all who see me know me for who I am. There’s no escaping myself.”

turian world building gets me so excited! i’d love to hear anything you’d like to share about estate turian culture. i’d also love any fic links you’d like to throw up that explore this topic.
Ooh, I’ll bring you on a journey today!
The turian estate families are a small group of families (Victus, Sparatus, Malso, Kandros and Surcus being a few examples), who live in massive estates in an old neighbourhood in Cipritine. They are descended from soldiers whose actions were so heroic; so helpful to the cause during the Unification War, that the Hierarchy gifted them with large plots of land in what was, at the time, the edge of Cipritine.
Every one of them opted to build a house, with the mindset that it would be the family home. Over generations, the houses are expanded to accommodate the growing number of family members, but soon this idea becomes twisted as it becomes clear that they’ll never have a house large enough to fit everyone. So, someone comes up with the bright idea that the highest ranking child of the owner is the one who inherits it. Every other family follows suit.
The result of this is that there are different tiers in these families. There’s the family that resides in the home, and then those who need to either marry into another estate family home, or live as (mostly) ordinary citizens with a very good name.
Arranged marriages are common, and so are accidents befalling the top-ranked child. Adrien’s father, Erasmus Victus’ older brother fell victim to such an accident, when he and Erasmus were on the same mission. Just a tragic coincidence… right?
Over the centuries, some families fall on hard times and must sell their estate to a “new credits” family. No matter how long the new residents live in the estate, they’re never seen fully as part of this exclusive club, but it is common for less highly-ranked children to marry into a new credits family to take advantage of their wealth, increasing the opportunities for them and their children. This is what Sparatus winds up doing - he and his wife wind up becoming friends, and have two children, but never fall in love with one another. But, his wife’s wealth and influence allow both of them to go far in Hierarchy and galactic politics! Sparatus’ niece was initially promised to Adrien, who rejected an arranged marriage, estranging himself from his abusive parents for years because he fell in love with Tullia, who comes from an ordinary middle class family.
Adrien loathes his origins so thoroughly that he works to shake his upper class accent as a young man, adopting Tullia’s accent instead. It slips out when he’s been drinking - especially at formal events with estate turians in attendance and it pisses him off.
All but two of the estates are destroyed during the war, but the remaining families petition the Hierarchy to purchase government land outside the city, which they use to build gaudy new mansions. The official who made that call did not consult Adrien, and made the deal because they determined that they needed the credits more than the land. Adrien, who recognizes that his people needs land to grow food, is furious and tries to stop the deal, only to discover he’s too late. This both infuriates and devastates him.
A lot of my Victus-focused work gets into Adrien’s horrific childhood and the deep scorn he feels for the wealthiest in Hierarchy society, but here are a few that really get into it:
A Broken Old Estate - Adrien’s origin story, told through a mix of flashbacks and current events. CW: child abuse, death of a sibling, death of a child, and drug/alcohol addiction.
The Family Dinner - Tullia meets Adrien’s parents for the first time. CW: child abuse, and drug/alcohol addiction.
The In-Laws and the Grandparents - A minor deviation from my canon universe wherein Adrien’s parents attempt to assassinate his adopted daughter, Aurelia, with Adrien covering her and taking the hit. The focus is on their father-daughter relationship, but there is a heavy helping of estate turian culture and politics - and even more in a coming chapter. CW: attempted murder of a child, major character injury, medical procedures, PTSD, and child abuse.

Fear Thy Nature - Teaser
Frigid wind blasted through the balmy March evening, weaving through the narrow streets of the Lower East Side, instantly subduing the sweet smell of spring's earliest blooms as it mingled with the fetid decay piled in the city streets.
Meandering through the labyrinth of narrow alleyways, the wind crept through the Bowery and hushed the flicker from the few remaining gas lamps. Building after building, tenements were plunged into complete darkness, with only the glow of oil lamps and candlelights in the windows high above offering any hope of illumination.
The wind busied itself briefly with an abandoned newspaper. The storm cared little for society weddings, a fatal gas leak on Marble Row, or the offerings on Broadway and discarded The Times several blocks north in a whirlwind of wet pages, further decorating the squalor of the landscape.
The last of the warm spring wind hovered over the fashionable neighborhoods to the north and caressed the faces of those who braved the streets of New York City at nightfall. Where the rich met the poor, the garish met the gaunt, electric lights of the upper set met the darkness of the slums; the bitter winds of change and debauched darkness met Maeve Woodbury. Here at the undoubtedly closed bakery, she removed the key from her leather boot and stepped inside the candlelighted room, out of the chill and into the warm company of her dearest friends.
"Ladies, when shall we next meet? The ache in my bones tells me we could be in for quite a storm," Mae asked the women seated at the bay window table. Her warm breath clouded the doorway against the evening's sudden chill, causing the fog to envelop her petite frame as she removed her gloves and stepped into the warmth.
Closing her eyes for fear of rolling them, Sidonia Van der Snyte looked past the latecomer and to the dark evening. "There's always an ache in your bones, dear. The weather has been wonderful as of late. The whole of winter went by like a seaside holiday."
Aurelia Luppino sighed, wistful for the Mediterranean winters she had known in childhood. "It felt like home."
"I suppose you are right. Mr. Whitman seems to believe so. Dermont took me to hear his latest work last night," Maeve noted. "It seems they are already celebrating the season's first blooms in Brooklyn. At least those of dandelions." She pressed her handkerchief to her nose at the mention of the weeds. She gathered her composure once she was confident the urge to sneeze had passed. "Mr. Whitman has such a sense for what is to come. You both could be right, but it is downright bitter out there."
This time, there was no stopping Sidonia's eyes from spinning in suspicion. "Do you always get your news from the ramblings of a madman?"
"I get my news from you, Sid."
Cocking her head to the side, unsure if she had fully understood the banter of the other women, Aurelia asked, "Is there a difference?"
When Sidiona stood from the table in a huff, the chill from the crack under the door was undeniable. "Perhaps Mae is right. She was right about the tea, after all. Did you bring the good sort from uptown?" Straightening her stance, she took the teapot from the table.
"Pendleton's Tea and Tonics, naturally. The finest in all of the city," Maeve promised, extending an emerald box with gold lettering. She scooped the lemon balm, jasmine flower, and lavender into the kettle in Sidonia's hands. "They say this one can help a person see the future. Perhaps this one will settle the debate on the weather. Whether it does or not, I promise the new blend is delicious."
Aurelia's smile brightened with the first taste but fell with the second sip. "How sad to have tasted the very best. Then, what shall I have to look forward to?"
"Sounds to me, the tea may tell you that itself," Sidonia groaned at the notion of tea meant to open a third eye. She had done fine to rely on her two amethyst eyes since birth.
Ignoring the skeptic, Maeve poured a cup for herself and felt the steam tickle her nose. The warm porcelain in her hands and the company of her book club slowly but steadily drove out the chill from deep within her chest. "Well, Lia, I am glad you asked about the Pendletons. It seems their case is nearly won. Dermont tells me the Gerard family has no claim to the patents on the family's pharmacy or cosmetic lines. With any luck, we will all be free to summer in Saratoga, happily slathered in Pendleton sun cream. I am nearly tempted to spend all I have on Pendleton stock and would encourage you-" Maeve's gaze dropped to the table.
While the women's club was meant to discuss books, they had come to find they would rather share their views on politics, religion, and sex. Nothing was taboo between them, but as her eyes flicked to Aurelia's mangled right hand resting on Sidonia's soiled lace tablecloth, she realized the three had no business bringing money into the conversation, no matter what foresight the tea had to offer. "I only mean to say I will know more next week after attending Mrs. Pendleton's gala. Sid, will you be attending?"
"I will be present. You know the rules, Maeve. If you wish to see me at Mrs. Pendleton's gala, you must sneak into the kitchen with the rest of the help. You can only pretend to be lost on the way to the powder room so many times, lest she suspect we are friendly."
Tea poured from Aurelia's lips as she struggled to contain her laughter. "You, my dear Sidonia, will never be mistaken for friendly."

#La Petité école : Karaté
« If you need to know a direction,
Look how you are breathing. »
Aurelia St John

See on Scoop.it - EntomoNews

The AM: February 27, 2023
Finding threads from post-rock to jazz to country instrumentals, from IDM to neo-classical, dream pop, and Guinan grooves—today's AM is one of the most wide-ranging in a long while, but hopefully coherent despite it all. All calibrated to shake off the last dregs of February and get ready for the onset of spring. Hope you enjoy it.

THE DARKLING ADMIRES THE SNOW - ENJOYS IT EVEN. Perhaps because it was easy to compare it to himself & he was vain enough to notice it. His gaze finds hers for a moment. HE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF HER SO FAR , only of the power that she radiates. He glances upwards towards the moon , contemplating his next step in this plot of his and how she could fit into it. POWER ; SOMETHING HE NEEDED , SOMETHING HE CRAVED & yet he could also sympathise with her , this lack of belonging. As a boy , even among his own people he had felt like an outsider. He still did in some ways.
“You will grow used to it in time.” Yet he is not so sure. Still , better to give her some form of encouragement so that Aurelia might stay. HE DEEMED THAT MOST NECESSARY , given the circumstances.
Aleksander comes to a halt at her words , eyebrow arching. Something ailed him indeed. SOMETHING FAR MORE DARKER & COMPLEX THAN MOST HAD NOTICED OR COULD EVEN IMAGINE.
“How is it you know that?”
。・:*:・゚☆ His words do little to comfort her. After all, Aurelia has never allowed herself to settle and what he says only gives her a sense that she needs to if she wants to feel a part of something. All it does is bring her arms tighter around her petite form, eyes cast to the ground and lips pouting subtly.
There's a moment where the little star lets the silence fill the space between them, unable to form the thoughts that swirl about her head into words that he may understand. She thinks in the language of the stars, sounds that string together a magic all their own. If she were to explain, it may paint a story in the sky as the stars hear her song and burn with remembrance. ❝ I've known this world long before I became a part of it. You could say I was it's guardian. ❞
Aurelia takes a few steps forward as she releases a heavy sigh filled with burden. Has she failed in her duties? She was never meant to fall, disrupted by none other than the man standing before her. ❝ I was there that day... ❞ she begins, voice quiet as eyes seemingly glaze over in remembrance.
❝ It was you who brought me here.. It was the darkness that pulled me from the sky. ❞ She cannot bring her gaze to meet his. After all, for the longest time, Aurelia avoided him, afraid of what may happen should she fall into his hands. But the truth is...
❝ I fell... for you. ❞
