Steven was waiting until that moment of the story to say so, but it seemed Webby was clever enough to figure it out on her own. And that was cool of her.
Tumblr media
"Hehe... Yup." Might as well be straightforward about it. "My dad, Greg Universe, decided the life of a traveling musician no longer called to him after he met that tall, mysterious pink-haired woman. And the bond they formed was by no means perfect; I mean, they were from two totally different worlds. But they talked, and they made it work," Steven explained with a fond smile.
"I guess they meshed together so well 'cause they both left behind old lives to reinvent themselves. And neither needed to know who they used to be, because it's who they were in the moment that was important. My dad got a job in Beach City at the local car wash, and then the old owner retired, giving the car wash to him. And mom? Well, she grew even more interested in human beings. She thought it was amazing how natural it is for humans to grow and change.
Tumblr media
"And...I guess she really wanted to create something new like that. Something like a Gem but could grow like a human. Thing is, she kinda needed to give up her gem to the new thing she created to make it happen like that, which meant, well...basically giving up herself. ...I'm not gonna pretend to imagine why she decided to do it like that, but she felt strongly enough about it to go through with it. So, Rose Quartz gave up her physical form to bring me into the world."
Steven tugged up on his shirt so that Webby could see the pink gemstone in his navel region, pausing a moment to look down pensively at it. "I got Mom's gem. And her powers with it. It was just a matter of figuring out how to use 'em."
Tumblr media
”Ohhhhh, it’s a romance. I get it.“
If she hadn’t caught on to that, Webby figured, she might have been very confused: the details of Greg DeMayo’s life certainly didn’t exactly sound relevant to the tale of history and intergalactic war otherwise. While it wouldn’t exactly have lost her, for Webby was a girl who found most things interesting, it would have felt like an abrupt change of subject.
"So… they got together again, right? Wait…”
Her eyes narrowed as she put pieces together in her head.
Tumblr media
“If she’s an alien, and he’s one of your humans… then…”
Everything seemed to click into place in a rush.
“Are they… your parents?”
Never mind that this was seriously getting ahead of the story. But he’d said that he was the only hybrid between the two species, and while no-one said that Rose and Greg’s relationship had to result in a child, it was certainly sounding like a reasonable progression of events.

((Headcanon: During his crosscountry trip, Steven sometimes calls Greg before bed literally just to say goodnight.
Yes, sometimes he forgets that when he’s in the western half of the country, Greg’s 2-3 hours ahead of him.))

"Hey, Steven! Not too late for your old man to wish you a happy birthday, is it?" (from Greg)
It was hard to believe it had been nearly a year since he set off to see the rest of the country. Steven had waited until his birthday came and went the year he departed before beginning his journey. In fact, it was only the day after that he brought Connie in on his plan and then afterwards began talking to the human denizens of Beach City about it, then another week or two before he hit the road.
That late night, he was staying in a guy’s bungalow-turned-bed-and-breakfast he helped patch up after a storm over the weekend; the family was letting him stay for free as thanks. But it was as good as always to chat with his father again.
Tumblr media
“Ah, it’s never too late,” he assured, before laughing, “OK, maybe after, like, a week or so...”
That aside, he asked casually, “You guys do anything in Beach City? I didn’t do anything real fancy; just a quick, light dinner at an Aqua-Mexican.” To his surprise during his travels, there were some locations here and there that the franchise had kept open to this day. He added sheepishly, “...but then I might have made the tiny mistake of mentioning it being my birthday...within earshot of the staff...”

Crosscountry ‘verse
((Those of you already familiar with my blog probably already know my ‘verses are actually split between different time frames of Steven’s life and, well, actual AUs. And of the former, I have the In-Series ‘verse with Steven at 12-14, the Prologue ‘verse with Steven at 15, the Teenage (i.e. Movie and Future) ‘verse with Steven at 16-17, and then the blog’s main time frame with Steven in his 20s.
Since around the middle of Future, when Steven going on a trip to find himself was a popular theory (and one that seemed quite possible from the evidence fans pointed out), this was a “time frame ‘verse” started considering adding. And with the series now over and the “Steven goes on a road trip” theory confirmed, I actually intend to carry that out.
This will serve as a sort of bridge between the Teenage ‘verse and the blog’s main time frame, with Steven’s age range being around 18-20. Differences here due to pre-existing divergences between canon and blogcanon include...
Since the Universe Cottage came to exist in this blog’s universe (see Places), Steven asked Greg to take care of the house in his absence. What Greg decided to do with the cottage (which also contained a basement recording studio for Sadie and Shep) was his choice and irrelevant to Steven’s journey--in other words, entirely up to the mun of any Greg Steven interacts with in this ‘verse.
The Neo Pink Court is now a fully autonomous democratic society with an elected president, with Steven now fully and officially reduced to nothing more than a figurehead and respected celebrity. Steven is taking a full-on leave of absence from all things related to the NPC government during his road trip but will gladly stop to say hi to anyone from the court he happens to come by on his journey.
Steven’s time spent hanging at Connie’s high school between classes, as well as his growing desire for an education, has led to him applying for and taking a GED class prior to hitting the road. He now has a certificate of high-school equivalency to his name and may use that to his advantage in temporary part-time jobs here and there around the country.
Other things to address...
Steven has gotten in touch with other members of his family with Uncle Andy’s help and gotten them to warm up to him for who he is. His grandparents were the biggest challenge, and after getting to know pretty much everyone else, he and Andy have begun working together to try helping them see Greg’s side of things and hopefully one day work out a family reconciliation. That day may still be a ways off, as neither Greg nor his parents still feel particularly comfortable being around each other for the time being. Some day...just not today.
Some of Steven’s favorite temp jobs to take up on the road deal with foods, which will fuel Steven’s future desire to open a diner of his own.
For the sake of multishipping, I’m gonna say that Steven and Connie have an open relationship, unless a Connie mun prefers to say otherwise in our threads specifically. If I ship with any other muse whose mun also prefers a monogamous take, those threads specifically take place in a timeline where Steven and Connie remain a nonromantic but still close and loving relationship.
I plan to use Movie/Future icons for Steven in this ‘verse but may use my own drawn icons for threads set closer to the tailend of this time frame.
And just to clear any concerns, Steven does have a valid driver’s license despite being kind of a ghost in the system, because Mayor Nanefua managed to pull some strings. Pays to be good friends with a political figure who knows the good you’ve done for the world.

SUF “Neo Pink Court” AU changes
((Given my “Neo Pink Court” AU diverges from canon starting when Steven is 15, I figured I should make something to keep track of how the creation of said court and Steven’s suddenly acquired authority over it changes the events of Steven Universe Future. I’m gonna keep it all under a cut and update the post as the series goes along.))
“Little Homeschool”: Steven’s been working to both help with the social progress of totally independent Little Homeworld and guide the Gems of the new court the Diamonds thrust upon him to be basically independent themselves with similar lessons. Jasper’s been on her own, not only refusing to mingle with the Little Homeworld Gems but also refusing to acknowledge the authenticity of the Neo Pink Court or Steven’s status as a Diamond. Her encounter with Steven in this episode is more or less the same.
“Guidance”: This becomes more of Steven and Amethyst trying to work out the social structure of the Neo Pink Court. And an additional part of Steven’s dilemma is when he realizes, “Wait, are they just accepting my ideas for change in professions simply because I’m their Diamond??? Crap, crap, crap!” Amethyst helps him through it, of course, and it’s basically the same lesson learned.
“Rose Buds”: The general events of this episode actually happen about a year or two sooner in the NPC AU than in canon, because as the leader of the new court, Steven was given the zoo and authority over its Gems. Meeting the Rose Quartz’s wasn’t as much of a shock here, since his attention was brought to him by means of being asked what their fate should be, and he felt inclined to point out they were innocent of any wrongdoings and should be freed. Not that that made interacting with Gems who look like his mom any less awkward.
As noted in my past writings about the zoo in this AU, Steven is mainly working to teach the Zoomans to live in modern Earth society so they can eventually shut the zoo down, but it was gradually decided that the zoo instead would be converted into a resort. It’s Steven who suggested moving the zoo into orbit around the Earth after being told it was capable of being moved. Holly Blue has been under his authority, of course, and he’s been pushing to make her treat all the quartzes under hers with more respect. All zoo Gems, including the Rose Quartzes, are considered part of the Neo Pink Court, but the Rose Quartzes--especially the three we get to know in this episode--have the more sibling-like relationship with him that their canon selves do.
“Volleyball”: Since Steven interacted with the Pearls more often in this AU, he’d already nicknamed them all in one go; nicknaming Yellow, Blue, and Pink Pearl Lemon, Blueberry, and Peach, respectively. Peach was considered a member of the NPC almost automatically, which she was perfectly fine with, but Steven felt weird with it, given Peach’s history with his mother. Steven reacted pretty much the same as he did in canon when learning Pink Diamond, not White Diamond, was responsible for Peach’s damage. Steven, Peach, and Pearl would take a trip to the Reef, and the events would more or less unfold like in canon.
“Bluebird”: Not much changed here. Bluebird was never really considered for the NPC, even though one of her components was an original member of its predecessor, and was instead expected to just join Earth society as an independent like the Gems of Little Homeworld. In addition to the canon sentiment that they’re trying to give problematic Gems the chance to improve and that Bluebird deserves that same chance, most figured Gem or Gem Fusion would have to be absolutely crazy to attack Steven when he’s an active Diamond with his own court. But surprise, surprise, they do! Greg’s hair suffers the same fate as in canon, but it should be just about grown back to its original length by Steven’s main AU blog age of 20-ish.
“A Very Special Episode”: Yeah, this one...nothing really changes here.
“Snow Day”: Part of the “Prologue ‘verse” time period lore is that Pearl has been handling much of the administrative duties for the Neo Pink Court to give Steven time to live a human life, and I think that would alleviate somewhat--but not entirely--much of the conflict of this episode. Given recent events, I have a feeling Steven would still want to help as much as he can with the workload before she officially hands him the reigns so he can still feel helpful. And given Steven also works part-time as an “honorary Fryman” during the “Teen Steven ‘verse” time period, that would probably add to the workload he’s piling onto himself. Overall, I think the same lessons all around would’ve been learned here as in canon.
“Why So Blue?”: This is a rather contained episode, and the Gems that Steven and Lapis were trying to get through to were clearly never on Pink’s court and wouldn’t be going onto the new Pink’s court either. Overall, I see the events of this episode going unchanged.
“Little Graduation”: As Pearl had handled NPC administrative duties for a few years before letting Steven take over, Steven had plenty of interactions with the boardies. But as he took over the court and started supporting the independent school on the side, Steven began seeing them less and less. As such, he was still as blindsighted by everyone moving onto lives beyond Beach City as his canon self was. As the NPC elected a Court President, whereas their Diamond Steven would have become little more than a figurehead officially, Steven chose to step down completely from his administrative duties, letting the elective office take them all as he felt he needed a good long break from the Gem scene.
“Prickly Pair”: Not much has changed regarding the events of this episode. Steven picked up gardening after completely stepping down as active Diamond of the Neo Pink Court. And despite the number of deviations in the timeline, Steven still sat on much of his emotional issues and let them simmer, leading to his dumping of them on the sentient cactus and all the complications that followed.
“In Dreams”: More or less the same. Steven still believes he needs something to fix to hang out with people, and having the NPC dumped on him to essentially “fix up” certainly didn’t help dispel that notion. Peridot naturally came through just the same.
“Bismuth Casual”: Because I love the idea of Steven hanging out at Connie’s high school between classes and making friends with her friends, the events of “Bismuth Casual” (much like “Rose Buds” above) happened earlier in the timeline and were, in fact, the catalyst that drove Steven to hang around the high school in the first place. It made him realize how out of touch with humans he was and want to try rectifying that. While it did help, it did unfortunately just serve as a distraction from his trauma he’d been avoiding in both canonically earlier and later episodes.
“Together Forever” and “Growing Pains”: Yes, worth listing both episodes at once; they more or less happen as they do in canon. Steven in his 20s plans to try again with the marriage proposal, but he wants to be patient this time and avoid rushing things like he had when he and Connie were teens. Greg took Steven back to the cottage at the end of the latter episode, rather than the beach house, and he stayed there until the events of the next episode.
“Mr. Universe”: Greg’s living conditions became better post-classic series in this AU, but that still didn’t change how they were before. Steven’s arguments that he grew up in a van for the first several years of his life, never went to the doctor until recently, and never attended school (until recently, and even then only as an outsider) still rang true. During his rift from his father, Steven abandoned his cottage room and returned again to the beach house.
“Fragments”: Jasper still refused to acknowledge Steven’s status as a Diamond and mocked him for “abandoning” his court, despite Steven leaving them in a perfectly stable, self-governing state. Nonetheless, the events still unfolded generally as they did in canon, and Jasper grew to respect him and declare herself a member of his court post-resurrection. Steven already knew at that point, due to pushing for the project to make it happen, that shattered Gems could be revived if all the pieces were reassembled properly in Diamond essence, so his healing Jasper wasn’t as much a shot in the dark as it was in canon, but the fact that he shattered Jasper at all was still very haunting for him.
“Homeworld Bound”: Due to his past duties as the Diamond of the NPC, Steven had already been aware of the Diamonds’ new, positive use of their powers and had been keeping in touch with the NPC’s liaison to Homeworld, Spinel. But that still didn’t make it any less upsetting to Steven how little the Diamonds were able to help him. Ever since CYM, Steven harbored traumatic and negative feelings towards White Diamond, but he pushed them to the back of his mind for the sake of working with the Diamonds to make Era 3 the best it could be for Gem kind. Only for his reverse-puppeteering session with White to force those feelings out, leading to the events of the episode concluding the same.
“Everything’s Fine” and “Everything’s NOT Fine” “I Am My Monster”: Despite the changes to the timeline brought about by the creation of the NPC, Steven still had an issue of pushing down and ignoring his trauma and negative feelings, which still ultimately led to his mental breakdown and subsequent transformation into the infamous “Wormy Boi”. In the end, he was ultimately cured by the unconditional love of his friends and family as normal.
“The Future”: The blog’s main time frame is a timeskip to when Steven is in his early twenties, so the AU’s version of this episode’s events naturally segue into the timeskip between the Movie/Future time frame and that one. The existence of the Universe Cottage meant that Steven hadn’t fully given the beach house to Greg; he simply asked him to take care of it in his absence. The scene of Greg lying on a regular bed for the first time in a while likely happened back during his introduction to the then-newly crafted cottage. Steven traveled the country and ultimately settled down elsewhere, but he kept Beach City as a summer home and took on weekend Big Donut shifts and odd jobs at Funland as summer jobs. He would eventually open his own diner, the design and menu both inspired by his experiences on the open road and also containing no actual meat but instead impressively convincing meat substitutes.

((I keep forgetting to share this, because I’d initially expected them to post it on their blog and never really thought to do it myself. Anyway, this is art I paid @loycos to draw, and I quite like it. Steven is technically an adult when the main AU of this blog takes place, but he’s still a smol, relatively speaking, and dear old dad can still pick him up and hold him.))

This is Steven’s Halloween costume this year. The pants, sandals, and Jader are borrowed directly from Greg for the outfit. And no, that’s not a wig, that’s shapeshifting. And yes, the artist was lazy and pasted in the png of the guitar from the wiki instead of drawing it himself.

Steven had a big grin on his face as his father reacted to his costume. Honestly, he was the one he’d been most eager to see it. The hair glowed momentarily before shortening, darkening, and curling back into Steven’s usual.
Tumblr media
“Haha, nope, just gold ol’ fashioned Gem powers,” he bragged before changing his hair again to match young Greg’s, while the children he’d been escorting watched in enjoyment. His smile faltered a tiny bit, however, as he added, “Er, sorry if you’re still a little uncomfortable with that.”
Steven remembered Greg had a rather poor history with shapeshifting, from Amethyst’s tormenting of him with it to Steven’s cat-astrophic first attempt at the power, so he hoped he didn’t sour the good vibes even slightly by so casually showing off that ability.

((Seeing that whole old fandom dispute over what counted as a “Diamond Order(tm)” or not get brought up again make me think of something absolutely bananas. Greg technically would’ve had the power to order Pearl to do literally anything while she was imprinted on him! Good thing he’s such a nice guy, huh?))

Sadie Killer and the Suspects had a concert coming up in a few weeks at Three Rivers City, an urban town in western Keystone. But there was still plenty to do before then, from booking a place to stay the night to taking inventory of merchandise to be absolutely sure they’d have enough of everything for the expected crowd. Steven was free for that weekend, as the Big Donut would be undergoing renovations at the time, so he was fully onboard with coming along to help with the show.
Tumblr media
As Steven was poking around city-related sites on his smartphone, he came across one announcement that caught his interest. After reading through the article further, he turned to his father with a grin.
“Hey, Dad, it looks like Three Rivers Stadium’s gonna be hosting a baseball game the same weekend as the concert. What do you think about us buying some tickets and staying an extra night to watch?” he suggested earnestly. “I mean, it’s been a while since we’ve gone to a ballgame together. Plus, I’m seeing some rave reviews on here for their stadium ‘dogs...”
He made that last point with an even bigger grin, watching his dad for his response. He knew what could get that man’s interest.
