Hi there! I'm looking for "under dog" fic recommendations. Do you have any fics that you think are really good but haven't really reached the spotlight you think it deserves?

Hello. I’ve been asked this before - and lately my answers are all gonna sound pretty similar. I have a hard time with these kinds of asks because the term “underdog” implies that no one is reading them - and the very fact that I’m currently reading them makes me take for granted that perhaps others aren’t.

Also - where is the line? What is the arbitrary rule that says a fic is an underdog? I don’t know the kudos/comment/hit ratio that would make that a thing. There are authors out there that get 30 comments within 12 hours of them posting and they feel like no one is reviewing because that’s not as many comments as there were hits… and then there are authors who get 4 comments on a chapter in total and they’re happy that anyone bothered to read at all. It’s a fine line and one I’m refusing to make a judgement call about.

I’m just going to share some fics that I love - that I think other people should read too. Some might be “popular” and some might be rare gems. 

I hope you find one or two of them to enjoy.

House of Memories by @thenurseholliday​​ (2/?) - This might literally be one of the best Bughead fics I’ve ever read. I rarely venture on to ff.net but it is 1000% worth it. It’s angsty and beautiful and painful. Have Kleenex.

Sneakers and Saddle Shoes (series) by @mistressofmalplaquet (3 fics) - I personally like to think of this series as being written specifically FOR me - because it’s absolute perfection and because I say so. It should be super high on everyone’s favourite list… just like it is on mine.

Snakes and Crowns by @cooperandjonesinc (9/13) - Soulmates. I’m a sucker for soulmates - and this has the added bonus of being soulmates to Betty starting school on the Southside and her mother lining up at conventions trying to find HER soulmate. It’s bananas and I love it.

Death of the Author by @happilyshanghaied​ (11/11) - I love a murder mystery. I love FBI agent Betty. I love her slightly dommy!Juggie. More people should love this fic - so it’s on the list. Read it!

i can’t fall in love without you by @captainunicornshenanigans​ (13/?) - The author’s notes are enough to make you read this fic - but the story is wonderful too. It’s basically a re-write of Season 1 only without some of the more ridiculous plot points. SO freaking good.

Game, Set, Match by @lizzybuggywrites​ (3/5) - I just started this one - but it’s SO incredibly cute. More people should be reading it. Juggie is a tennis star - and Betty is a sweet small town reporter who bumps into him (literally) in a bar in Rome. It’s SO cute. I’m eagerly awaiting the updates.

Serpents and Ponytails by @auddy-95 (13/?) - An alternate what-if Juggie hadn’t gone to Riverdale High with them but was still their friend from Elementary and Jr. High… and then he’s back in their orbit in the middle of the Jason Blossom mystery. I love reimaginings of Season 1. 

Wanderlust by @thesecretfandom (7/12) - Bughead meeting whilst on a European vacation… this is a seriously underrated fic. The supporting cast is really wonderful too.

sins of the father (series) by areyouabadwolf2 (3 fics) - okay. SO. This author is AMAZING. The first fic is completely from FP’s pov when he’s in prison but Jughead’s life is carrying on and we see him grow up through FP’s eyes. The second fic is the Jughead pov and then the third fic is set after… and is also super wonderful. I’m new to this author - but I love them.

Paperback by @georgiegirl8 (1/1) - It’s been no secret that I’m a bit of a Georgie fangirl (and she doesn’t have a tumblr so not a ton of people know her yet) - but this fic was a bit different from the first few she wrote. It’s contemplative and nostalgic and has a hazy Fleetwood Maccy kinda of summertime vibe to it. It’s really great and more people should read it.

bring the sin by @sopaloma​ (7/7) - I think that Paloma dropped this fic in the MOST clever of ways and since that day - when we got all seven chapters at once and an aesthetic for every sin - I have continually felt not enough people were reading and reviewing. SO much work was put into this story and I loved every single chapter. 

How Things Could Be by GoingQuietly (4/?) My literal favourite Riverdale/Comic crossover. Comic Juggie meets Riverdale Betty and realizes he’s in love with her. It’s SO good. I wish there was more of it.

Low Lights by @moon–mama​ (8/?) - Band fic. And it’s wonderful. Juggie is their security. So so good.

Me crawling out of a pit. Here it is. Pre-sequel vault-hunter Audrey and/or fully-“loyal”-to-Hyperion-Audrey. 

For more info on pre-sequel Auddie is under the cut.

Audrey is sent off to help on the Helios station. After moderate success in the lab and gaining her abilities, the staff wanted her out of their hair and Helios was far enough away to do that. Best case scenario, she gains experience, returns fairly safely and is considered a useful asset now. Worst case scenario, she is killed in the process of Jack’s kind of ridiculous mission or manages to run off. 

They do it anyway because they can just blame Jack for the wasted resources if needed. Audrey is put on an auto pilot shuttle to Helios with a new outfit, heads up display, an Echo, and a cheap pistol. 

This is shifting her main timeline a few years earlier, making her abduction right after the discovery of the vaults and Eridium. She is 14 during the events of BLTPS. Her abilities are the same but she is a little more of a “tamed” version of herself as she never got to get that real wild side from Pandora. She doesn’t completely hate Jack as he’s not a direct cause of what happened to her but still sees him as a boss/handler since he’s now got the controls to the collar and that paranoia gets worse as Jack loses his sanity. 

Making it through the events of Pre-sequel she is kept on Helios, used more as an attack dog but eventually meets Julia, though she keeps her first real feelings for another person heavily under-wraps. Jack is a manipulative asshole who will try to use anything an anyone to keep people under his thumb. If I would fully flesh out this idea for another verse idk??

Had to share this from our neighbor Janna and my daughter’s best friend when they were growing up. Audrey, my daughter, was freakishly not scared by anything and loved horror movies. Her birthday sleepovers often were accompanied by rather frightening VHS movies like Blair Witch Project and M. Night’s crazy shit. Auddie’s old houses stories were no doubt a product of tales told over camp fires after a full day of fishing, a bit of Bulleit, peanut butter sandwiches (for them) and fresh smoked Lake Superior whitefish swapped for fresh caught whatever I caught on the pier in Cornucopia or Herbster. The dog would snore loudly while I told these horrific tales because she’d battled waves for hours and drank in gallons of fresh Gitche Gummi lake water.  Here’s the jist of the thread....

“Written after a fun-filled October weekend at Elkhart Lake at one of the last of the old school summer cottages that belongs to a family friend. Between walks around the lake, trying to find Old Lucy hidden in the fall leaves, catching northerns or muskies off the pier to finishing off bottles of Jack with my mother, this was a happy time. Janna was along for many of those adventures”. “I was just reminiscing the other day about how cool our trips to Elkhart Lake were. Loved it except Auddie used to come up with stories about old houses that would scare the shit out of me. “ “Nothing ever scared Audrey. I hope you are celebrating 🥳 ✨🐾✨ in Doggie Heaven...I know you are always with me in my my days til we meet again. But GAWWWD its so fuckin hard without you by my side physically. My Fur son & his love for me as his Mom, was unconditional love that I’ll probably never see in a human being give to me. I don’t think I ever understood that there would be a day I wouldn’t have my son by my side...to start fuckin 2020 off like it did was beyond ROUGH...it’s a heartbreak I’ve yet to really truly get over. I cried in the middle of the night last night knowing it’s was his birthday today and it just broke my heart. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye yet...I’m still not. It was one of the hardest days and hardest heartbreaks I’ve endured...I’ve had six relationships not work out and still losing Auddy was the worst heartbreak of them ALL. I miss you everyday Lil boy & how we were in sync soul wise and the same...I remember he tripped over something at the same time I did & we just looked at each other like we are so alike lol . God couldn’t have blessed me more with Auddy and my Doggies. One day we shall meet again I look forward to seeing him again whenever I do go to Heaven .
