Greys anatomy request- Can you do one, please, where covid is non-existent and Link gets sick with the flu (fever, swollen glands, sore throat , nausea etc) or something and Meredith takes care of him please until better (check temp, comfort, meds , soup etc) , or if u don't do ships Yn or oc is OK please.
Loved this. Kind short compared to my other two but I didn’t know how to go on.
Warnings : n/a (I think??)
“Honey I’m home!” I called to my boyfriend. Link had the day off, which was good. He had been working himself to death, I was surprised the stress hadn’t manifested itself into the flu. “Dude, where are you?”
“I’m not your ‘dude’.” He complained, shuffling into the entry of the apartment. “I’m your baby. You’ve been spending too much time with Karev.”
I glanced at him, giving him the side eye as I put my keys and bag away. He was acting strange. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” he denied quickly, which had me raising an eyebrow at him. “Okay,” he relented. “I’m just stressed. I just got over this big case with Jackson and now I’ve already got another one lined up with Amelia. I can’t seem to catch a break.”
“It’s clearly more than stress.” I countered. “Your voice is all scratchy. You’re sick.”
“I don’t get sick.” I rolled my eyes. Idiot. “I don’t!”
“Whatever, I’m ordering take out. What do you want?”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After finishing our Chinese, egg dumpling soup for him, lo mein for me, we were watching Young Sheldon on Netflix when coughing started.
“Do you want a cough drop, baby? I have those Vitamin C ones we like.” I offered, knowing it would be declined.
“Sure.” I was stunned. I stared for a second before going to the kitchen to grab the bag. I also got him a glass of water. “Thanks baby.”
I pressed a hand to his head. “You’re burning up,” I scolded Link. “I told you that being this stressed would make you sick.”
“It’s not a big deal.” He countered. “People get the flu all the time.”
I gave him a wary look before marching back to the kitchen. I grabbed the chamomile tea from the cupboard and put the kettle of water on to boil. I also rummaged around to find a cough suppressant.
“I don’t need all this,” Link complained, coming into the kitchen. I glared at him, making him relent at the look.
“Take this.” I ordered, handing him the bottle of cough suppressant. I turned back to make his tea.
“It’s orange!” He complained. “It’s gross!”
“Suck it up buttercup.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After he finished his tea, I made him take a cool shower before bed. Once he climbed in next to me, I rolled to feel his forehead again. It was still warm, but not as alarming.
“You should get some sleep. I texted Bailey to let her know you won’t be in tomorrow.”
“No, I can go. Just need some rest.” Link tried to protest.
“Nah, you can take a day off. Besides, I have the next 36 hours off.” He was asleep before I finished my sentence. “Not sick my ass.” I muttered to myself, turning the light off and going to sleep myself.

AN: For Nina (@doc-pickles) and her granola bar LOL
……………………………………………………………………
Jo Karev waddled over to the Peds floor. At almost 40 weeks pregnant, her baby belly was barely contained by even the largest pink maternity scrubs. Their daughter also took away her ability to walk at anything faster than the speed of a waddling duck, as she liked to complain. The second she rounded the corner to the nurse’s station, the collection of nurses there took one look at her and instantly got out of her way. They busied themselves with anything that took them away, leaving the area empty and free for Jo to pick any chair she liked. She eased herself into the one rolly chairs with memory foam padding, finally getting some relief for her aching back and feet as she melted into the chair.
“Hello Jo, how was your day?”
She looked up to see Hayes was finishing his post-op notes on the tablet in front of him. Of all the people around her, he was the only one that seemed to be unfazed by her grumpy moods.
“My day would have been better if Alex had met me in the lounge on time to take me home like he promised,” Jo complained as she crossed her arms and glared at Hayes as if it was his fault Alex was running late. “Where is my dear husband?”
“He's just finishing up with his last case of the day. The parents need a little extra reassurance after their son's surgery, and Karev is just talking with them. I’ll go get him,” Hayes said, sending her a smile before he left.
Jo closed her eyes and leaned her head back, enjoying a moment of peace and quiet. She had been on her feet all day in between her two C-sections and running around the maternity ward. She was exhausted. Although, Carina had her on light duty ever since she reached 35 weeks. She urged Jo to consider taking maternity leave or at least doing half days as she was just so overly exhausted and, as a result, grumpy. However, the only thing Jo hated more than feeling exhausted at work was sitting in the Loft all alone, feeling anxious for the baby’s arrival and missing Alex. At least here at work, she could pop over and see him whenever she wanted to.
However, the peace and quiet didn't last for long as the baby inside her squirmed and wiggle around as she kicked Jo's ribs. On top of that, as soon as the kicks ended, she had another Braxton Hicks contraction. Jo got up from the chair and put both hands on the desk in front of her as she leaned forward. The pain was unbearable and unimaginable. It felt like someone was squeezing her entire abdomen. She couldn't think, she couldn't speak, all she could do was sway her hips from side to side as somehow that helped as she willed the contraction to go away.
Suddenly Alex's hands were on her waist. He came up from behind her and wrapped his arms around her as he held her belly. Jo stood up and leaned against him, her eyes still closed as she leaned her head against his shoulder. Alex held her and whispered soft things into her ear to distract her from the pain as Jo moaned in relief. The feel of Alex's hands on her body, although it did nothing to relieve the pain, just having him there, having him support her and having him to lean against was enough. Alex held her as they gently swayed from side to side until her contraction finally passed but kept his hands on her belly.
“Hey,” Alex whispered in her ear, soft and gentle like you always was for her, as he pressed a kiss to her neck. “You ready to go home?”
Jo let out a sigh, and she leaned forward and put her hands on the counter again. “I don't think we're going home tonight.”
“What's wrong, oh,” Alex said as he let go of her and she felt him step back. Jo could almost imagine the way his eyes went wide as his lips parted into an o, and she smiled. “Was that, are you, are you in labor?”
“I may or may not have had a few contractions,” Jo admitted as she bit her lip to hid her smile before she turned around to look at Alex. His panicked expression changed into one of frustration as he greeted his teeth and put his hands on his hips.
“Seriously, Jo,” Alex said, shaking his head and rubbing his forehead. “Okay, well, when did they start and how far apart if they've been.”
“Relax, it's only been a few hours, and my water hasn't broken, oh,” Jo gasped as if by divine intervention she felt a gush of fluids dampen her pant and run down her legs as her water broke.
“Josephine Karev, why didn't you tell me earlier,” Alex insisted as he glared at her.
“You were in surg…” Jo trailed off as she felt the pressure in her pelvis increase and another contraction started.
If Jo thought she was in pain before, it was nothing compared to the pain she was in now. She knew that her amniotic fluid cushioned the baby's head in her uterus, and now that it was gone, she felt the full force of the baby's head bearing down on her pelvis as their baby made its way out of her.
She could only moan and squeezed her eyes shut as she reached out for her husband. Alex took her hand and only let out a little squeak as she squeezed it as hard as she could. He instantly moved to put counter pressure on her hips from where she was still bent over. Jo leaned forward to put her head on her arms as she tried to remember to breathe in the midst of all her pain.
“They’re less than three minutes apart, for God's sake, Jo!” Alex said in exasperation once her contraction passed.
“Not helping!” Jo yelled back at him through gritted teeth as she cried out.
She gripped the counter with both hands and let out a groan as she pushed again. She was both familiar with this pain and yet completely inexperienced with it. She had seen it hundreds of times as she helped other people deliver their babies, but she didn't truly understand it until she felt it herself. The feel of her baby's head pushing out of her and bearing down all of their weight on her pelvis while her uterus contracted to push them out was unlike any pain Jo had ever felt. And she was no stranger to pain. Her entire body was on fire, and the pain was nearly unbearable, but she still didn't cry out. She just gripped the edge of the counter until her knuckles turned white as the beads of sweat dripped down her forehead as she was consumed by pain.
“Okay, okay, just breathe in and out,” Alex said, modeling for her as they both took a few deep breaths before her contraction passed. “Okay, I'm going to go get Carina now?”
“Alex, wait,” Jo said, gripping his hand and pulling him back before he could run off. “I'm having this baby now.”
“Yeah, I know that's why I'm going to go get you a wheelchair so we can head over to the maternity ward.”
“No, Alex,” Jo said as she paused, feeling the urge to push again, as she could feel the baby’s head move down the canal and she grabbed the hem of her scrub pants to pull them down. “I'm having this baby right here, right now.”
If Jo thought he had a worried expression before, the look on Alex's face was pure panic. He was white as a sheet and grabbed her scrub pants to pull them down to the floor as Jo spread her knees.
“Holy shit,” Alex swore, and Jo didn’t need him to explain why as she felt their baby's head in between her legs as the baby was crowning. “Jo, Jo, you need to slow down, or you're going to tear.”
“Tell that to your daughter! She's the one who's coming out of these faster than a lightning bolt,” Jo said as she squeezed her eyes shut as she moaned in pain again, they sure did call it the ring of fire for a reason. “I was supposed to have an epidural.”
Jo kept pushing as the contraction continued as Alex kneeled in-between her legs and coached her through it as she counted the seconds and pushed. Her body seemed to be in charge as all she could do was push until the contraction passed.
“She's got a lot of brown hair.”
“Seriously Alex, her head is coming out of me and that's all you can say!”
“I'm sorry, I'm just freaking out a little bit here!”
“You're freaking out!” Jo yelled, glaring at him, Alex freaking out the last thing she needed.
He peeked up at her with wide eyes as his mouth was open in an oh, clearly seeing how he messed up.
“Nope, nope, not freaking out, and I'm doing great, you just relax I got it, her, I got her,” Alex said before disappeared in between her legs and she felt his hands on the baby.
“I'm so gonna kill you after this!” Jo said, before another contraction came on and she put her chin to her chest and pushed with all her might.
Jo knew that her experience as an OB resident would help when she delivered her baby, but she didn't think she would be her own OB. Despite the pain, she tried her best to remember how to breathe, how to push, and when to take breaks, not that her baby or her body gave her any. With Alex helping her through it, she delivered the head and then the shoulders. With one more push, their daughter came into the world, and she felt a sense of relief as it was all over. The pain of pushing and her contractions momentarily passed, but she held her breath as she waited for her daughter to cry.
There was a moment, a half-second of silence, as both she and Alex anxiously waited before she heard the baby begin to cry. Jo let out a sigh, knowing that her daughter was alive and well. She opened her eyes and turned around, still gripping the counter and leaning on it for support. She looked down to see Alex holding their pink, crying baby girl in his arms as he crouched in between her legs. Both of her parents looked at her in shock at her sudden appearance.
“I had our baby,” Jo said, absolutely stunned as her legs gave out from under her, and she sank down to sit on the cold laminate floor in the pool of her amniotic fluid and a bit of blood, and she rested back against a file cabinet.
“You had our baby,” Alex said as he cradled their newborn to his chest, gently swaying before he looked up at her.
It was far from the most comfortable thing, but she was too exhausted to care so long as she wasn't standing anymore. Her entire body had those hard muscle aches that came after a long day or a hard workout. She was so exhausted she could have fallen asleep right then and there, but Jo was so stunned by the little girl Alex was holding, and she wanted to meet her daughter.
Jo looked down at the crying baby in Alex's arms before she reached out for her. He passed her over and Jo instantly cradled her as she held her daughter for the first time. She began to rock and shush the baby as she had done a dozen times with other babies, but this was her daughter in her arms, and Jo just stared down at her in amazement. Soon she quieted down and opened her perfect dark eyes to stare up at them.
“Hi,” Jo whispered as she smiled and stared down at her before she brushed her finger down her perfect cheek.
“Hello,” Alex said, and Jo could hear the tears in his voice as he got choked up. “I'm your Daddy and I'm so happy to meet you.”
Alex leaned forward to look at her as well and they both had large matching smiles. Their daughter squirmed and gave another cry as she kicked in Jo’s arms instead of in her belly like she had only moments ago. She could hardly believe that her daughter was here in her arms and that this wasn't all a dream. Jo reached out to take Alex's hand and give it a gentle squeeze as they both stared back down at their daughter.
“She needs a blanket,” Jo said, looking around the empty nurses' station. She couldn't believe she had just given birth in the middle of the hospital with no one but Alex to help her.
“You need a blanket too,” Alex said, taking off his lab coat and putting it over her bare waist where her pants were still around her ankles.
Jo looked down and Alex's scrub shirt that was absolutely soaked in blood and amniotic fluid. Besides, she was pretty sure she peed as well in the midst of pushing their daughter out. As Alex looked around for anything to cover their daughter, Jo moved to take off her own scrub shirt. She was already sitting there with her pants down, she didn't really care as Alex helped her pull her scrub shirt over her head before she cradled her daughter against her bare skin. She felt her baby against her chest as her little chest rose and fell before Alex placed the shirt over them. The cool air felt nice against her overheated skin, and for a moment, they just sat there in stunned silence staring at the little girl who had curled up on Jo’s chest and seemed content in her mother's arms.
“Oi, where is everybody?” Hayes yelled before he looked down and saw them on the floor. Jo and Alex looked up to see him staring down at them, slacked jaw and frozen in place. “Jo, you had your baby.”
“Yeah.” Both Jo and Alex said at the same time as they turned to look back at their daughter with large smiles.
“Well, congratulations, but I'm going to go grab the nurses, Dr. DeLuca, and some blankets,” Hayes said before he ran off.
……………………………………………………………………
Less than an hour later, Jo was settled in a postpartum room. Carina helped her finish the delivery and had cleaned up her and the baby. Now the family of three were slowly settling in for the night as they bonded with their daughter. The shock of her delivery was slowly fading away, but Alex was still a little dumbfounded. However, they were both so happy that she was here regardless of how unexpected it was.
“You just couldn't wait to get out, could you, Eden Helen Karev,” Jo said as she smiled down at her daughter as she ran her finger down her little nose. “You were a surprise from the very beginning and you just keep surprising us.”
Alex chuckled as he pressed a kiss to the top of Eden's head. He was sitting at her bedside, leaning forward to rest his elbows on her bed, so he was right next to Eden's head. Her head was indeed too big for the regular baby hats, so instead of a hospital hat, she was wearing a light purple knitted hat from Nana Helen. Jo was thrilled to have gotten some pain killer as her perfect daughter's big head had indeed torn its way out of her. She had to have nearly a dozen stitches, but it was all worth it, mostly.
“Well, I think we've had enough surprises for one lifetime, baby girl,” Alex said as he still stared at her completely in awe. “You hear that Speedy Edie, no more surprises.”
“For once, I agree with your Daddy, not on the nickname, though,” Jo said as she glared at Alex while he just smiled at their little girl. “No more surprises, at least not for a while.”
He chuckled as he looked up at her and Jo caught his eyes as they exchanged a little laugh. They were still in disbelief that she was finally here in front of them, and they just couldn't stop staring at her, despite how she was fast asleep in Jo's arms. They were just so absolutely in love and in awe of their little girl as they got to know her and memorize her face. Eden was absolutely perfect in every way, with ten tiny fingers and ten tiny toes. She had Alex's little lips that Jo knew would turn up into his crooked smile as soon as she started smiling. She had Jo’s little nose and her eyes that, although they were a dark grey now, they both could tell they would be a brilliant shade of gold.
As they continued to stare down at her, their quiet little moment together was interrupted by the door swinging open as Meredith frantically came into the room.
“You gave birth!” Meredith explained before she looked down at the newborn in Jo’s arms
“Yep, Mer, meet Eden, she decided to come out and that was that,” Alex said with a laugh and a shrug.
“She gets that determination from her mama then,” Meredith said as she walked over to them and smiled down at the little girl in Jo’s arms. “Well, hello little one.”
Meredith wasn't the only one who seemed to have just received the news of Jo giving birth as Link was hot on her heels, nearly running into the door frame.
“You're in labor! Wait, the baby’s here already!” Link said, looking at Eden in Jo's arms as his jaw dropped.
“In Jo’s defense Eden came really fast,” Alex said shaking his head even now, neither of them could still believe it.
“Eden?” Link said with a smile as he came over to them. “That's a great name. Hello Eden.”
“Thank you,” Jo said as she beamed up at their friends, but before she could introduce Eden to him, Webber came into the room as well.
“Karev, I hear congratulations are in order,” Webber said, coming over and smiling down at the little girl. Before they had time to say hello, Amelia and Maggie came into the room with nearly a dozen balloons, teddy bears, and other little gifts for the baby.
“Congratulations,” Maggie and Amelia said as they came in, filling the room with the gifts. As if to complete the party, Levi and Helm came in and offered their congratulations with a teddy bear and a balloon.
Jo just sighed and relaxed as her family came over to her bedside and cooed over Eden while congratulating her. Jo was excited for them to meet her, and Alex proudly told the story about how Jo had given birth. As he talked, he seemed completely amazed as he just gazed over at them getting a little distracted as he stared at his wife and child.
“Karev, what's this I hear about you giving birth at the nurse’s station?” Bailey’s booming voice filled the room as she came in looking between Jo and Eden to the party around them. “And what is all this? What are you people doing harassing the Karev’s and their newborn? Out, all of you!”
Bailey quickly began shooing them all out of the room as they all reluctantly left, but promised to visit the next day. Jo didn't mind the big party at first, but she was exhausted and was happy to be able to rest.
“Congratulations you two,” Bailey whispered to them before she dimmed the lights and closed the door behind her.
Jo smiled as she laid back in the bed ready to get some sleep. Alex took Eden and held her as he leaned a kiss on Eden’s head before leaning forward and placing a tender kiss on her lips.
“You are amazing, Jo. Thank you for giving me this beautiful baby girl,” Alex said, staring at her with so much love in his eyes.
Despite how they had been together for more than half a century, she was still surprised when Alex said things like that to her. No one had ever thanked her for anything she had ever done, but Alex did. He made her feel loved and appreciated. And no one looked at her like Alex did. He looked at her with so much love and sometimes it still took her breath away. All she could do was smile and squeeze his hand before she reached out to brush her finger down Eden's arms before her tiny little fingers wrapped around Jo's big finger with a tight grasp. Alex settled in the chair right next to her and held her, and their daughters joined hands, as his thumb rubbed circles in the back of her hand. Jo could barely keep her eyes open, but she just stared at him and their daughter just for a moment longer.
“Go to sleep, Jo. She'll be here when you wake up, we both will.” Alex said, nodding as she looked over at them.
She smiled, and she sighed, Alex always knew exactly what she needed to hear. “I love you.”
“I love you too,” Alex said, giving her, her favorite crooked grin. “Now get some rest, you and our baby girl deserve it.”
“Okay,” Jo finally relented and closed her eyes.
She still hung on to the feeling of Alex holding her hand and Eden’s fingers wrapped around hers. Her family was right next to her and she didn't want to ever let them go.

Interns
Okay here's the request!
So call me crazy but I kinda wish they had Link be like a big brother to Lucas to help him through his first year of intern , but what if he was also hiding something else that made him more Blacksheep of family, he has a 2 year old son of his own and single parent , but wirh both Meredith and Maggiw gone Lucas needs help with new place and goes to Link amd Amelia for help (sorry for the rambling)
Warnings: fxf, Amelia x reader, illusions to smut, Link taking Lucas under his wing, Link x Lucas platonic, Link x reader platonic, Lucas x reader platonic
"And why can't you do it?" Link asked me and I set the tablet down, looking at him with a hard look. "Okay, I'll do it."
"If I do it, it seems like I'm being too much of a big sister/aunt thing, and I don't want to be overbearing. If you do it, it's just like an attending wanting an intern who's doing a good job in on a surgery."
"I don't need an intern, I have Nico." I stared hard at him again. "And I have an intern. God, the look you give could rival my mother's and you're not even a mom!"
"I may as well be," I laughed at him. "I take care of you lot and have been since Meredith and I were interns. I gotta go find Amelia. Something about needing a consult?"
"You just want a good lay."
"You're not wrong," I winked at him, scurrying off to find my girlfriend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Amelia and I were in a heavy make out session in the on call room, my hands in her hair, hers on my ass, hips rolling together like waterfalls, when Lucas came in.
"Oh God!" He covered his eyes in horror. Amelia and I pulled away from each other to stare at the intern in annoyance.
"What do you want?" I snapped at him.
"I - I wanted to take a nap before my surgery!" He complained. "Not see the hospital mom screwing my aunt." He pulled his hand away from his eyes and glared at us.
"Well, find somewhere else!" Amelia snapped at him. "I haven't orgasmed in days."
"I don't need to hear this, you've already scared my eyes."
"Then leave because I'm going to --" I started to say but was effectively cut off.
"Bye."
"Where were we?" Amelia asked me, hands going back to their place on my ass.
"I think we were," I pushed myself into her arms and humped. "Here."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"How did the surgery go?" I asked, stepping up next to him to fix the board.
"It went really good. Link let me close!"
"Oh! How nice! Congratulations!"
"Thanks!"
"Sorry if we ruined your nap," I said, feeling a little guilty.
"La la la! Can't here you!" Lucas said, walking away.
I giggled to myself.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I need Lucas today." Link said coming up to where I was.
"Get your own intern." I scolded him, looking back at the iPad.
"No, I need him. We did a similar surgery two weeks ago and Nico is helping Hunt. I need him."
"You're going soft! And you said you hated interns." I shook my head at him.
"Can I have him or not?" Link asked, growing impatient.
"Yeah, yeah, you can have him."
"Thanks."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Ditching me for ortho?" I asked Lucas, perching myself on Amelia's lap.
"Ditching me for my aunt?"
"What can I say? I'm a sucker for her mouth." I smirked at him, making Amelia smile when he made a face.
"I think you do most of the sucking." Amelia said.
"I will definitely ditch you two for ortho any day." He told us, standing up and walking away.
"Wanna have another round before surgery?"
"Absolutely."

AN: There wasn't nearly enough of Jo and Link in last night's episode.
……………………………………………………………………
“Are you sure about this?” Jo asked, holding up the mirror looking to where Link was holding a strand of her hair, getting ready to make the first cut.
“Yes, trust me. I'm much better at cutting hair than you are,” Link said as Jo scoffed, remembering the time she tried to cut his hair. “Besides, you've seen how I keep up this beautiful hair.”
Jo rolled her eyes but pinned the towel around her shoulders and let him continue. After they deep conditioned her hair in the kitchen sink and worked out most of the tangles, Jo decided that although some of it could be saved, the majority of her ends were completely unsalvageable. So she put Luna on a play mat on the floor as Link grabbed the scissors.
Jo closed her eyes as he made the first cut. As soon as she heard the snip of the scissors, she opened one eye and looked at it in the mirror she was holding. She let out a sigh of relief as, thankfully, it didn't look too bad. As Link continued to cut, Jo looked down at Luna, she was supposed to be doing tummy time, but she had rolled over onto her back and was currently staring up at the suspended animals while playing with her toes.
“Does Lana have object permanence yet?” Link asked, catching Jo's attention as she looked at him in the mirror.
“Yeah, she’s really good at not fussing when I lose her favorite blanket. We still play peek-a-boo all the time and it's her favorite,” Jo said, looking down at Luna again as she glanced at her, and Jo put her hands over her face before pulling them back and saying peekaboo to her as Luna laughed.
“So Luna knows that just because she can't see something doesn't mean it's not there. The same thing applies to you when you drop her off at daycare. She knows that you love her, Jo. I've seen the way she looks at you, and just because you drop her off at daycare doesn't mean that Luna doesn't know that you love her.”
“Thanks,” Jo said with a sigh, looking down at Luna, who was fixated on her and smiled down at her little girl.
Luna looked over at her with a wide smile as Jo waved at her, and Luna waved her arms as well before looking back up at her toys. Jo couldn't help but smile as she stared at her daughter. Her perfect little girl was so happy. She never wanted Luna to worry about if Jo was going to pick her up from daycare. All Jo wanted was to let her daughter know that she was always loved and wanted.
“I know it's not as easy as I say it is. I’m still terrified that Scout is going to get cancer,” Link said, letting out a sigh as he picked up another strand of her hair.
“Even though I've told you a dozen times that the likelihood of that is pretty small?” Jo said, looking up at him. “By the way, how was his 1-year appointment? “
“It was great, except for the fact that we over shared with the doctor, but Scout is doing fine. He's, he's perfect,” Link said, with a smile as Jo looked back at him, but it quickly disappeared before he shook his head and picked up another strand to cut. “But I still worry, you know, I don't think that I'll ever not worry.”
“I don't think I'll ever not worry either,” Jo said, staring at Luna before looking back at him in the mirror. “And Link, you gotta stop proposing to Amelia.”
“I just want to marry her. Is that so wrong?” Link asked with a sigh, running a comb through her hair and holding up the ends before he trimmed them.
“You're pushing her to do something that she's not ready to do. Amelia has a really good reason for not wanting to marry you. She's been married before, and she loves you, and  I can tell that she doesn’t want to rush into a marriage she's not ready for. I was in her position and do you know how many times I turned down Alex’s proposal? He asked me like three or four times before he decided it wasn't enough for him and we broke up for six months.”
“Didn't he also punch DeLuca and almost go to jail at the start of those six months?”  Link asked, pausing to turn his head and look at her. “Also, weren't you still married to Paul and you hadn't told him yet, so technically, you couldn't have accepted the proposal even if you wanted to.”
“Yes, but that's not the point,” Jo said, waving him off with her hand as he went back to cutting her hair. “Alex was pushing me to do something I didn't want to do. Both in terms of accepting his proposal and telling him about Paul. We were only able to work things out when he accepted that. Then down the road, I realized that I wanted to marry him, and so I proposed, and we got married. I mean, he still left, but...”
Jo trailed off, she wanted to say that they were happy together, but she questioned how much of that happiness was real. She knew that Link and Amelia were different, but given her failed marriages, sometimes she felt like she had no right to be giving relationship advice. Still, she clung to what was true for her and Alex and what she saw that Link was doing with Amelia.
“Look, it doesn't matter. I still wasn't ready to marry him, but Alex decided that being with me was more important than marrying me!” Jo said, and she waited until he pulled the scissors for her to turn around and look at him. “You have the option to choose to love her and you're throwing it away! Do you think I would do that if Alex was standing in front of me right now? I wouldn't care if he brought an ex-wife and two kids with him. So long as I could have him, I would be happy. Are you telling me that so long as you have Amelia and Scout, you wouldn't be happy?”
Link looked down and away from her. She knew he wasn't quite ready to hear her words. He was still hung up on the fact that Amelia wouldn't marry him. She hoped that he would truly listen to her and Amelia, and they could work things out. Link looked back up and caught her eye again. He didn't say anything as he picked up a strand of hair by her face, measuring it out before he started cutting again.
Jo turned back around and looked down at Luna, who had rolled over onto her stomach. Luna got up on her hands and knees, she wasn't quite crawling yet, but she would hold herself up and wiggle. Jo smiled and held her hands out to encourage her to crawl. Luna got the most adorable, determined look on her face as she moved back and forth, not quite crawling. After a few minutes, she got frustrated and started to cry out, sitting back and holding out her arms for Jo to pick her up. Link let go of her hair, and Jo reached down to pick up Luna before she sat back in the chair and held Luna on her lap.
“You almost did it, Luna, you're going to be crawling before Mama knows it,” Jo said, reaching out and bopping her finger on Luna's nose as Luna almost went cross-eyed trying to watch her finger.
“She is certainly getting close. You'll have to learn how to whip your phone in time to capture it,” Link said as he ran a brush through her hair before he started cutting it again.
“What if she crawls for the first time at daycare and I don't get to see it?” Jo said, her eyes widening as she looked at Luna.
“She's not going to crawl for the first time at daycare. Nothing ever happens for the first time at daycare,” Link said with a little laugh, and she felt another chunk of her hair fall off her shoulders. “The first time she crawls for you is still the first time and she's going to remember if you were there for the real first time or not. You're still going to get to watch her grow up and do so many first, Jo. You have a whole lifetime with her. A few hours in daycare is just nothing compared to that.”
“I know,” Jo said, picking up Luna’s little pacifier with a small brown bear stuffed animal attached to it and waving it around before Luna reached out for it and Jo put the pacifier in her mouth. “It feels so different than when she was in the NICU. Back then, I would visit her whenever I could, and that felt like it was enough. I never felt like I missed anything or like I was abandoning her. Now that she's home with me, it's different, and I don't know why.”
“It's different because she's home,” Link said, pausing to hold a strand of her hair and making sure his cuts were straight.
“I've been home with her for 12 weeks and I still feel like I did the first day I got her. I've barely even unpacked. I've just been living out of boxes for three months,” Jo said as she glared over at the stack of boxes that she hadn’t unpacked yet.
“You've got a 10-month-old baby, a preemie 10-month-old baby girl, and you're doing everything on your own. So long as you keep yourself and her alive, I think you're doing pretty good,” Link said, putting a hand on her shoulder and giving it a squeeze.
“Thanks,” Jo said, looking back at him.
Jo let out a sigh as she looked around the room again. She never imagined her life turning out like this. Even with Luna, the penthouse felt big and empty at times. She was glad that Link was staying with her now. This was the first time that she had lived on her own in six years. She had never gone more than a few months without a roommate or without Alex. As she looked down at Luna, she smiled. Jo could tell she was getting sleepy as she ran her finger over her forehead and down the bridge of her little nose, and her eyes fluttered. It was a trick that Alex had taught her to get the NICU babies to sleep. She knew that even if they were still together, she would have still adopted Luna, but she always thought that Alex would be the one to make her mother or at least be with her through all of this.
“I never thought I'd be doing this alone. I thought that I'd have him with me,” Jo said, looking down at Luna. She had settled in Jo's arms, her eyes were growing heavy, and she struggled to keep them open and soon closed as she fell asleep.
“I know,” Link whispered as they both fell silent, save for the sound of the scissors cutting her hair.
“Whenever we talked about kids, he always got this big smile on his face. He made all these promises to me. He promised me that we would move into a good house in a good school district and that we would go on all of the vacations that we never got to take his kids. Disneyland, and the beach, and roller coasters, and water parks. He promised me that he would change all of the diapers after I gave birth, and I would roll my eyes, but I knew that he would do his best to keep his promises.”
Jo couldn't help but get choked up even a year later. She still grieved for the things that she lost when he left as tears collected in her eyes and a lump formed in her throat. “I adopted Lena alone, and I knew that I was going to be a single mother, but I never thought I'd do this alone.”
“You're not alone, Jo. You have me,” Link said, although he still had the left side of her hair to do. He dropped the scissors and wrapped his arms around her, putting his head on your shoulder. She leaned her head against his, letting a few tears slip out of her eyes. “I never thought I'd find the love of my life and that she wouldn't want to marry me. I never thought that I would be raising my son half the time. I don't want to be alone either, so why don't we stick together? Then we’ll never be alone.”
Jo could only nod as she closed her eyes and shuffled Luna into one arm so she could put her arm around Link as he hugged her. Jo let out a sigh as she let out her tears, although it was just a few. Every time she cried about Alex, she cried less and less. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing, but it was what it was. Once she pulled away from him, Link let go of her and gave her a tissue to wipe her face. He double-checked that she was okay before he went back to cutting her hair.
“So if I'm going to move in, we should probably move you and Luna into one of the bedrooms, otherwise it's just awkward,” Link said, as Jo let out a little laugh and tried not to jostle Luna too much.
“Okay, so do you want the bedroom with the fireplace or without the fireplace?”
“The guest bedroom has a fireplace?” Link paused, moving his head around to look at her as Jo nodded. “Yep, and the master bedroom has both a fireplace and this huge jacuzzi tub that can fit like two people.”
“Wow,” Link said with a shake of his head. “It's so weird that you're rich now.”
“It's super weird,” Jo said as she looked around the penthouse a little bit while trying not to move her head. She still wasn't used to it and didn't think she would ever get used to it.
“Alright, I'm all done. What do you think?” Link said as he ran a brush through their hair one last time before Jo held up the mirror to look at her hair.
It was shorter and blond, and she didn't look anything like herself, but she was happy with it. “It looks great. Thank you”
“Don't act so surprised. I told you I know how to cut hair,” Link said as he took the scissors and went to grab the broom.
“It is kind of a little surprising, though,” Jo said as she got up to go put Luna in her crib. When she put her down, Jo lingered there. She held onto the side of the crib and just watched her for an extra second.
“Hey, come help me with this?” Link said, holding out the dustpan to her, and Jo knew that he was trying to pull her away, but she let him and grabbed the dustpan to help him sweep up her hair.
--------------------------------
Later that night, Jo laid in bed staring at Luna in her crib. She just got on her back down and was just watching to make sure she didn't wake up again. As Luna slept peacefully Jo found that she couldn't close her eyes. Some Nights the bed still felt too big and empty, no matter how many pillows she squished up against her back. Every time she reached out to feel the cold space next to her, it was just another reminder of the person who should be there.
Jo let out a huff as she reached out to her nightstand. She sat up just a little bit as she opened the drawer and pulled out the photo that she kept hidden away. It wasn't even her photo and frame. It was the one that Alex kept on his nightstand. The glass of the frame was gone and it was now held together with a little bit of duct tape after she threw across the loft, breaking it. The second she tossed it, she ran to get it and put it back together. Jo looked at the photo, it was them on their wedding day. They looked so happy and he looked so in love with her. She ran her fingers over his face, tracing the lines of his hair and the little curls in his hair. She still didn't know when that love stopped.
“I wish you were here. I wish I would have given you a baby earlier. I wish you would know and love Luna like I do,” Jo said as she let herself whisper aloud. S
She could feel the tears that came up earlier in her eyes again. She took in a deep breath, and she closed her eyes as she settled, and the tears disappeared. Whenever she did that, she didn't know if she was holding in her tears or letting them go, sometimes it felt like doing a little bit of both.
She heard Luna stir and move around and saw her kick in her crib. Jo put the photo down and got up to glance at her, letting out a sigh of relief as she saw Luna was still asleep. She smiled too as she watched her little girl move in her sleep, dreaming of happy things. Her peaceful watching was interrupted by a loud snore from Link as she looked over at him. He was asleep on the couch and spread out with one leg up on the armrest and the other dangling off as he was too big for the couch.
As much as she wished that she had Alex with her, she acknowledged that her life was pretty good right now. She was surrounded by people who loved her. She had a family and a daughter whom she loved more than anything. She was pursuing a new career that she was passionate about. If she had left with him and gone to Kansas, she wouldn't have any of this. She looked back at Luna and reached out, tracing her fingers across her arm down to her hand as her little hand wrapped around Jo’s fingers.
“You are worth the heartbreak a thousand times over,” Jo said, although the tears welled up in her eyes again and this time, she let them fall on her cheeks. “I hope you hear me and I hope you know that. I love you so much, my Little Moon.”
Luna smiled in her sleep and Jo shared her smile. She squeezed Luna's hand one last time before she let her finger slip out of her grasp and went to crawl back into bed. She put the photograph away in her nightstand and moved the pillows up against her back again as she tried not to miss Alex. Instead, she watched Luna in her crib just for a moment. Her daughter would be okay in daycare and she would know that she was loved even if Jo wasn't with her all the time. Then she closed her eyes and she smiled as she fell asleep.

AN: After Thursday's episode, we all need some good Jo and Luna fluff where they're both happy and together! I swear if Krista doesn't make this right I'm going to cry a river and then riot on twitter!
……………………………………………………………………
Jo sighed yet, all of her exhaustion faded away as she walked into Luna's room on the Ped’s floor. Luna had graduated to her own room a month ago after her bout of Aspiration Pneumonia. She had been taken off the ventilator, although she was still on supplemental oxygen. Since then, she had also gained a pound and a half and now weighed 6 pounds. Her preemie was now a little baby, still small, but absolutely perfect. Luna was doing so well and Jo couldn't be more proud of her little fighter.
“Hello, my Little Moon,” Jo said as she went over to Luna's crib and looked down to see her swaddled in the white and blue star blanket that Jo had hung over her incubator since she was four weeks old.
Luna woke up and let out the most adorable yawn, but immediately her face contorted into a grimace as she let out a cry. Jo cooed as she carefully lifted Luna out of the crib and was careful with her oxygen and other monitors as she moved over to sit in the rocking chair. The move from the crib to the rocking chair without disturbing any of the monitors or oxygen tubes was a delicate dance that Jo had become an expert at.
Luna’s fussing continued, but the second Jo picked her up, she started to calm. By the time they settled in the rocking chair, Luna had calmed down and was staring up at her with big blue eyes. Jo smiled down at Luna as they rocked back and forth and held her baby.
“Mama had such a hard day today. I don't remember my first year of residency being this hard, but Auntie Carina is kicking Mama's butt. And she speaks in Italian at a hundred words a minute, so I can barely keep up. I think I'm going to have to learn Italian if I want to keep studying with her. Can you help your Mama learn Italian, mia bella luna?” Jo said as she trailed her finger down Luna's cheek.
“But how was your day, Luna? Were you good for Dr. Hayes and your nurse Jackie?” Jo asked as Luna just stared up at her before Jo reached for the tablet and looked at Luna's chart. “Oh, I see you ate a lot today, and you were able to burp, but you peed on the nurse again. I thought we agreed we liked nurse Moria? And then you got some playtime and a good nap, no poopy diapers. I guess you’re saving that for Mama, but let's try not to poop in the tub again?”
Jo continued to talk to Luna and tell her all about her day as she stared up at her. Luna became fussy again, and Jo got her a bottle, then burped her, and changed her diaper. Sure enough, she was saving the poop for Jo, but thankfully she didn't ruin her onesie. Jo got her cleaned up and then pulled out the spaced themed play mat and set it on the floor, gently placing Luna in the middle for a bit of tummy time. She also put on some soft music and dangled the little rocket ship in front of her as it seemed to be Luna’s favorite, or at least she stared at it more than the other toys. Luna usually didn’t like tummy time, and after a few minutes, she began to fuss, so Jo moved her onto her back where she wiggled her arms and legs and stared up at the little rocket ship that Jo clipped to the overhead bar.
Luna wasn't too active as she was still technically a newborn despite being three months old. They had to subtract from her due date, and so technically, Luna was three weeks old. Yet, she seemed so big to Jo, despite the fact that she was only 6 lb. She couldn't help but remember how tiny she was when she was in the incubator, and here she was, moving around and turning her head. She just seemed to have grown so much in such a short time. Luna wiggled around for a while until she decided she was done and began to cry. Jo swept her up into her arms and held her close, enjoying their snuggle time.
As it got dark, Jo ordered food from the cafeteria and ate dinner one handed as she held Luna. After dinner, Jo got Luna set up for a bath. Because of her sensitive skin, she only got one every few days, but they were Jo's favorite days as she got to play with her in the water, and Luna loved the water. Jo filled up the bath in the adjoined bathroom, and nurse Jackie came in to help Jo unhook Luna from all of her monitors and the oxygen tubes. Finally, Jo completely undressed her and wrapped her in a fresh swaddle blanket before going into the bathroom and setting Luna in the baby tub. Jo sat down on the ground next to the tub and grabbed a cup as she gently poured warm water over Luna’s stomach in the swaddle. Luna’s eyes immediately fluttered close as she seemed content in the bath.
“Yeah, you like the warm bath, don't you, Little Moon,” Jo said with a smile as she poured the water over her body again.
After a few minutes, Jo began to unswaddle one of Luna’s arms one at a time so she can gently wash them with a washcloth and a little bit of soap. She made sure to get in between her fingers and toes before Jo finally opened the blanket, and she rubbed the washcloth over her little tummy, gentle of the scars from her Bronchogenic cyst  and the Nissen fundoplication a few weeks ago. They were just hairline scars now and Jo knew that by the time she was an adult, they would just be finger-length long. When she grew up and asked about the scars, Jo would tell Luna that her scars were nothing to be ashamed of because she was a fighter and her scars were a symbol of her survival. Jo finished washing her body and swaddled Luna back up before she gently rubbed the washcloth over Luna's cheek.
“Oh I know, I know. We don't like this part, do we?” Jo said to Luna as she fussed and turned her head away.
Jo tried to be as quick as possible, gently scrubbing away the stickiness leftover from the tape to her oxygen tubes and being as gentle with her baby's skin as she could. Jo finished up and grabbed the grey elephant baby towel as Luna cried. She unswaddled her from the wet blanket and picked her up, putting Luna in her lap with the towel as she quickly wrapped it around her. Jo held Luna close and cuddled her gently, rocking back and forth until Luna calmed down again before she drained the bath and went back into the room. Jo gently laid her down on the fresh crib sheets that Jackie had changed.
“Alright, diaper first and then, lotion, bottle, book, songs, and bed, sound good, my Little Moon?” Jo asked as she wiggled her fingers over Luna’s tummy.
Jo hooked Luna back up to all of her monitors and got the oxygen tubes placed as she kicked. Jo grabbed the lotion and massaged Luna’s gentle skin as she looked up at Jo with her big blue eyes. Jo picked out a fresh onesie, this one was a light blue with white outlines of little leaves all over it, before grabbing the matching blanket that Jo gently wrapped around her, but not yet swaddling her. The room had a little sink and countertop where Jo was able to make up a bottle before she chose a book from the shelf. Tonight’s book was called ‘My Little Brave Girl’ and was one of the many gifts that Jo had received since she began the process of adopting Luna. The books had been her favorite as she settled in the rocking chair with the bottle and the book as she read to her Little Moon.
As Jo finished the book, she looked down at Luna, who was still working on the bottle. “You know, for someone who only drinks about 4 oz, you sure do take a while,” Jo said as she smiled down at her and continued to stare at her as she ate.
These were her favorite moments of the day. The calm, quiet moments that she got to spend with Luna, just holding her and taking care of her. Jo transitioned into the role of Luna's mom faster than she could have ever imagined, although there were some hiccups here and there. Jo felt lucky that she still had lots of nurses and other staff at the hospital to take care of Luna while she was at work, yet she still felt every bit Luna's mom. She tried to be there when she woke up in the morning, she spent all her breaks there, and she was there to put Luna to bed at night. These days she practically lived in the room with Luna, and Hayes didn't have the heart to kick her out when she fell asleep in the rocking chair. At least it was better than the crowded Loft with Helm and Levi still crashing there. It was rough though, Jo couldn’t take off her mask or ventilator helmet for very long, and she couldn’t officially set up a cot, so she occasionally slept in the on-call room down the hall. Yet Jo made it work because she would rather sleep in a rocking chair than be away from Luna.
Jo heard a knock on the glass and looked up to see Bailey and Webber smiling at her as they waved. “Look, Auntie Bailey and Uncle Richard are here to see you.”
Luna had finished her bottle, and Jo placed it on the shelf before she got up and walked over to stand in front of the window so Bailey and Weber could see her.
“Well, hello Luna, aren't you getting big and you look so happy in your Mama's arms,” Bailey said as she waved and smiled at Luna.
“She's getting big, isn't she Wilson,” Webber asked, looking down at little Luna and giving her a wave.
“She is, she ate a whole 4 ½ ounces tonight, and now she weighs 6 lb, she’s getting so big,” Jo said, smiling down at Luna with pride.
“Oh well, you gotta get big and strong so that you can keep your Mama on her toes, isn’t that right, little missy,” Bailey said as she cooed at Luna, who was fixated on her.
Luna had so many aunties and uncles who came by and visited her every day at the hospital. Even Meredith had managed to stop by and visit. Although they weren’t allowed in Luna's room, they waved and smiled at her through the glass. Bailey and Weber talked to her for a little while before Luna grew fussy and tired, and they left so Jo could put her down.
Jo pulled the curtain across the glass and turned off the overhead lights before turning on the moon shaped light. She turned on the sound machine that she had gotten to play the quiet sounds of the rain. She put Luna back down on the crib to swaddle her before she picked her back up again and returned to the rocking chair.
“La la lu, La la lu,
Oh, my little star sweeper,
I'll sweep the stardust for you,
La la lu, La la lu,
Little soft, fluffy sleeper,
Here comes a pink cloud for you.”
Jo had to admit she didn't have the best singing voice, but Luna’s eyes fluttered close, and she settled in her arms, and quietly drifted off. Over the past few weeks, Jo had learned all the Disney lullabies, and the Little Star Sweeper song from Lady and the Tramp had quickly become Luna and Jo’s favorite.
Even after Luna fell asleep, Jo kept singing the lullaby once more, and she continued to rock and hold Luna. She never felt like she got enough time with her, in between her residency and her studies, and Luna being in the hospital, being rounded on and checked over. Jo could hold Luna forever and some nights she did. As soon as she was sure she could move without waking her up, Jo grabbed her OB/GYN books and the TV remote and settled in to study with Luna in one arm. Although it was hard to concentrate with the sleeping little girl in her arms captured her attention every time Jo looked at her. She didn't even notice Hayes and Schmitt coming into the room with the interns for the night rounds until he pulled back the curtain and turned on the lights.
“What the hell are you doing? Turn off the lights!” Jo hissed at them as she pulled the blanket up over Luna’s head.
“Our apologies Wilson,” Hayes said as he glared at the interns until Dr. Khan turned off the lights.
“Young Ortiz, presen.”
“Luna Ashton,” Ortiz said in a normal tone as Luna stirred in Jo’s arms.
“Shhh!” Jo shushed her along with a glare as Ortiz shrank back.
“Ummm Luna Ashton, 4 ½ months old, born at 26 weeks, surgery at four weeks old for a Bronchogenic cyst, and another at 4 months for Nissen fundoplication, is now breathing on her own and her gastroesophageal reflux is under control. She has had no episodes of apnea or bradycardia for the last two weeks, is able to maintain her temperature, is taking donated breast milk by bottle, and weighed 6lb and 1oz at this morning’s weight check.”
As Ortiz presented, Hayes came over, and Jo reluctantly let him hold Luna and move her over to lay in the crib as he checked her lungs. Luna slept through the whole thing. It was the touch of a good pediatric surgeon. Arizona had that touch and so did Alex. Jo took a deep breath as she ignored the thought of her ex-husband and focused on the baby in front of her.
“Conclusion?” Hayes asked as he finished his exam and gave Luna back to Jo.
“Discharge with continued supplemental oxygen at home?” Ortiz said, unsure as she read the chart.
“What?” Jo asked, looking between Ortiz and Hayes.
Hayes just smiled as Jo just stared at him in shock. “Carry on to the next patient and wait for me there.”
“Levi can stay,” Jo said, looking at him.
The interns filtered out and closed the door as Jo just started at Hayes. “Luna can go home with me?”
“Yes, she is doing well even on supplemental oxygen, and we’ll get you set up with a CPAP machine and an apnea monitor, but with a doctor for a mum, I’m sure Luna will be in good hands,” Hayes said as he crossed his arms with a smile. “Get your maternity leave sorted and anything else you need from the courts, and we will schedule a date for the car seat test, and then the two of you can go home.”
“She can come home with me. Luna can come home?” Jo asked, still in disbelief.
“Yes,” Hayes said with a smile.
“Jo this is amazing! Luna gets to go home!” Levi said, getting excited. “I’ll help you get the medical equipment tonight, and you can talk to Bailey and Carina tomorrow, and she can be home by this weekend.”
“Home,” Jo whispered, looking down at Luna.
Home had been the hospital for Luna’s entire life and this room had become Jo’s home too for the last few weeks. The thought of bringing her baby home to the Loft was both exciting and terrifying. Here at the hospital, Luna had round-the-clock medical care and a number of nurses who helped Jo take care of Luna’s day-to-day needs as well as all of her medical needs. Going home meant that Jo would have to do all of this on her own and although she knew how to do it, it was different because Luna was her baby. She had taken care of a number of babies when she was a resident in Ped, but this was her own kid, and there were no breaks, no shift ends. It was only her.
“Jo. Hey Jo,” Levi said, putting his hand on her shoulder as Jo finally came out of her head and looked up at him. “Don't worry, it's a good thing, and you're more than ready for it.”
“I know,” Jo said, taking a deep breath before she looked down at Luna. “We're going to be going home, my Little Moon, home.”
The day of the car seat test came, and from the moment they set Luna into the little black car seat, Jo became a nervous wreck. They got Luna settled, set up the monitor, and then they started the clock. Jo spent the hour pacing the length of Luna's room as she watched the monitor for any signs of a drop in heart rate. Jo was an anxious parent whenever it came to anything regarding Luna. Each time she so much as hiccup wronged, Jo instantly tensed up. She became just another mom on the NICU ward, and all of her logic and medical training went out the window as she worried for her daughter. Luna just watched Jo as she paced before she decided that her Mama was boring and slept through the rest of the car seat test.
The hour was over before she knew it and Luna was officially a graduate of the NICU. There was a little bit of excitement and celebration in the room as everyone started clapping. Jo got Luna out of the car seat as she smiled down at her Little Moon. One of the nurses presented her with a tiny graduation cap that had the number of days Luna was in the NICU, along with a tiny little onesie that said NICU graduate. They were finally going home and Jo could hardly believe it.
They all got packed up to leave, and all of the nurses and staff who had come to know and love Luna just as much as she did, came to see them off. They presented her with so many gifts that Jo could barely fit them all in her car. When they walked out of the hospital, everybody was there to see them off, including Bailey, Webber, Levi, Helm, Maggie, Winston, Hayes, Teddy, Owen, and Amelia as they all wished her congratulations. Finally, Link was waiting for them next to her car.
“Your chariot awaits m’ladies,” Link said, opening the back door for her.
“Thank you for doing this,” Jo said as she put Luna’s car seat in the car and reached out to pull Link in for a hug.
She felt so lucky that she had such amazing friends and family who stepped up to be there for her and Luna. She would have never succeeded in becoming Luna's guardian or becoming her Mama if it weren't for her friends encouraging and supporting her.
“Ready?” Link asked as he turned around in the front seat as Jo got Luna’s car seat settled and sat next to her.
“Yes,” Jo said as she looked down at Luna, who she suckled on her pacifier, still looking ever so small in her car seat. “Let's go home.”
Jo looked down at Luna for the beginning of the ride home, cooing to her and talking to her about the outside world and the parks and other places they would go to. Link made sure to try and distract her with small talk, excitedly talking about how they could have playdates now with Scout and he can meet Luna. As well as a few tricks and things he had learned in the past few months with Scout. It was weird seeing her best friend be a parent and even weirder to think that she was now a mom to her own little girl.
She was so focused on Luna that she didn't even notice when he finally pulled up to Meredith's. It was bittersweet, pulling up to the house. Jo had originally wanted to take Luna home to the Loft as it had been her home for years, but when she did the first walk through with her lawyer, she said it was unlikely that she would get approved to live in such a place as it was hardly baby-friendly. Meredith’s house had been approved for foster care before, and all they had to do was update the license and redo the background checks. Meredith had graciously and excitedly offered to let Jo and Luna move back into the house. Still, it wouldn't be home, but then again, the Loft hadn't felt like home since Alex had left. Jo felt like she was just shuffling between the hospital and the Loft the way she did when she was in foster care. She hoped that with time and with a little decorating, their room at the house could become their home.
Link quickly came around to help her out of the car. He grabbed Luna’s oxygen tank, and Jo held the car seat as they walked into the house. As soon as they walked in, they saw the huge banner across the staircase that said ‘Welcome home Auntie Jo and Luna.’ As they looked into the living room Meredith and the kids were all there waiting for them. As soon as they noticed her, they all jumped up to run and greet her.
“Auntie Jo, you're here!” Zola said, getting to her first and wrapping her arms around Jo’s waist.
“We missed you!” Ellis said as she and Bailey bombarded Jo with hugs before they all pulled back and crouched down in front of the car seat that Jo had set on the floor.
 “Is this her? Is this our new cousin?” Zola said, smiling down at her. “Hi, baby Luna.”
“She's so tiny,” Bailey said as they all stared down at Luna. “Scout was much bigger when you brought him home from the hospital, Uncle Link.”
Luna stared up at her new cousins with wide eyes taking them in as they watched her. Jo knew she shouldn't be, but she couldn't help but feel anxious, especially as Ellis reached out to touch her.
“Ellis, you need to ask Auntie Jo first before you touch Luna, and you need to wash your hands too,” Meredith said, coming up behind Ellis and putting her hands on her shoulders. “Why don't the three of you go put the finishing touches on Auntie Jo's room, and we’ll be up in a second.”
“Yeah, come on guys,” Bailey said, leading the charge up the stairs.
“I'm really glad you're here, Auntie Jo. We’ve missed you, especially since Uncle Alex left,”  Zola said, giving her another hug before she disappeared up the stairs.
Jo smiled as they left, she had missed them too. They were her nieces and nephew despite how they weren't blood-related. She knew that they loved her, but going to Meredith's house just wasn't the same without Alex. And she hadn't seen the kids since the pandemic started.
Meredith came over and pulled her in for a hug before she looked back at Luna. “How does it feel to finally be home with her?”
“I am excited and a little terrified,” Jo said as she reached down and got Luna out of her car seat.
“I was too when we first brought Zola home, but you'll get the hang of it soon enough,”  Meredith said, giving her shoulder a squeeze before she looked back at the living room. “We've got a second oxygen machine set up down here, as well as a pack and play, a high chair, and anything else you and Luna could need.”
“Thank you,” Jo said, looking around the room and smiling. She recognized the pack and play and some of the toys from when Meredith’s kids were babies, and it was nice that Luna was able to inherit these things from family.
“Well, let's go upstairs, and you can start unpacking,” Meredith said as she walked over to the stairs.
“I'll stick around and help you out,” Link said as he picked up the oxygen tank again and the three of them headed up.
Having lived there once before, Jo was familiar with the house and wasn't surprised when they led her into Cristina/Maggie's former room. She could hear all the kids giggling behind the door, and Bailey peeked out before Zola pulled him back in. Finally, they opened the door to her room. Jo gasped as she looked around her room. It was all set up and ready for her and Luna. The walls had been painted the same light red color as the door to the loft, and her bed had been made up with the same comforter, and even her macrame tapestry hung on the wall. Alex’s nightstand was on the right and hers on the left. There were their shelves and her woven laundry basket. Her TV was set up across from the bed, even her plants hung in the window. It was like they had simply picked up everything from her room in the Loft and put it exactly how it was in the room before her.
In the corner of the room, there was a galaxy tapestry with hanging lights at the differentiation of the little space for the nursery. Luna's white crib with her little rocket shelf was next to it with the rocker, and the little mobile with all the planets, stars, and the little moon were hung above it. Jo took everything in with wide eyed as she looked around the room and a smile stretched across her face.
“Being a new mom is hard,” Meredith said as Jo turned around to look at her and Link. “It's exhausting and never ending, and it can be very lonely, especially if you're doing it as a single parent. It's good to have a support system, and since I'm only back at work part-time, I’m able to help you whenever you need it.”
“And since Amelia and I are switching off shifts for now and Scout is here whenever one of us isn't, I can help you to, and we can figure out how to raise our kids together,” Link said with a smile, it was something that they had once dreamed about doing and now they finally could.
“I can help you out too,” Zola chimed in, hopping off the bed and coming over to them. “I can play with her and keep her entertained, and I can give her a bottle or put her down for a nap, too.”
“Me too, except that I don't do diapers,” Bailey said as everyone laughed.
“Don't worry guys, I'll do all the diaper changes,” Jo assured him as she reached out to ruffle his long blonde hair.
“Can I sleep in here with you, Auntie Jo?” Ellis asked, she had already crawled up on Jo's bed and was happily lying against the pillows.
She had always crawled up on their bed whenever Jo and Alex babysat her at the Loft. Jo had no doubt that Ellis would do exactly as her mom used to do and slip into Jo’s bed in the middle of the night.
“We’ll see Ellie-Belly,” Jo said, giving her a wink before she looked around the room again. “Thank you for doing this. It means a lot to me, to both of us.”
She looked over at her two best friends who were like her family and they would be Luna’s family too. She smiled down at Luna, who was eagerly looking around, and walked over to the crib, she gave the mobile a light spin, turning the stars and planets, and it quickly got her attention. Luna stared at it for a second before she caught Jo’s eye and stared up at her, and opened her mouth as if she was smiling and Jo smiled too.
“Welcome home, my Little Moon.”

Alex looked around the reception hall as Maggie and Winston’s wedding came to a close. The bride and groom were completely enraptured with each other. As the party fizzled out around them, they just kept on dancing. He was happy that Maggie and Winston felt comfortable having him and his kids at their wedding. Eli and Alexis had played with Meredith’s kids and the rest of the Grey-Sloan kids the entire night. While Alex had sat at a table with Meredith and Hayes as they all conversed warmly.
As the kids wound down Alexis, Eli, and Bailey laid on the floor watching the tablet and falling asleep on each other, until Alexis crawled in his lap. Alex smiled at her and put his arms around her as he held his daughter. Alexis wrapped her arms around his neck and laid her little head on his shoulder.
“Are you ready for bed, sweet girl?” Alex asked, as he rubbed her back and held her close.
“No,” Alexis mumbled, clearly exhausted and Alex knew that her eyes were closed.
“Alright, I think we’re ready to head up for the night?” Meredith said appearing next to him with Ellis in her arms and Zola training behind her, the only one who was still fully awake.
“Mom can’t I stay down here with Austin and Liam?” Zola asked as Hayes and the boys appeared next to them.
“Sorry Zola, these two are headed up as well,” Cormac said, subtly putting his arm on Meredith’s back.
The two of them thought that no one would notice when they started dating, but it was currently the worst kept secret at the hospital. Alex was happy for Meredith, and she and Hayes were good together.
“We don’t have to go to bed once we get up there, do we?” Austin asked as he grabbed his suit jacket from the back of his chair.
“I don’t want to go to bed either,” Zola said as she grabbed the basket she had used for the flowers.
“How about this?” Meredith said to her. “Since you’re the only one awake and you’re older now, I think it would be okay if you and the boys put on a movie after you help us get everything upstairs?”
“Deal!” Zola instantly agreed as she reached down to grab the tablet from Eli and Bailey.
“Come on boys,” Alex said as the boys slowly got up half-asleep.
Liam and Austin agreed and they all helped to put away their plates and cleared the table. Grabbing stray jackets, and purses, and the little mint chocolate wedding favors Maggie and Winston had put out.
“Did you have a good time buddy?” Alex asked Eli, as he put his hand on his son’s back Eli leaned into him and gripped his dress shirt while they walked.
“Yeah, can we hang out with Bailey, and Zola, and Ellis all the time?” Eli’s sleepy voice whispered up to him as he looked up at Alex with big brown eyes.
“I don’t know about all the time, but how would you like to have a sleepover with them tonight?”
“Un huh,” Eli said as he leaned into Alex further.
Alex paused and leaned down, shifting Alexis to one arm as he picked up Eli. The one thing he learned about having twins was that what he did with one child he needed to do with the other. Sometimes that meant carrying two sleepy six-year-olds at once. Luckily for Alex, he had always been strong enough to carry them both. It was something he relished doing when he could as they were getting a bit old to be carried around and he had missed out on carrying them around when they were babies. Eli sighed in his arms and Alex could tell that he would be asleep by the time they got back to the hotel room.
As part of the wedding package, Alex, Meredith, and Amelia had a three room suite that made the wedded festivities with six kids easier. They put all of the little kids down in Meredith’s room and she said she’d take the extra queen in his room. Alex quickly got his kids changed into pajamas. They woke up again but quickly fell back asleep as he tucked them into the bed next to Bailey and Ellis, with the rollaway left empty for Zola.
True to her word, Zola helped them put her siblings to bed, before going out into the main room where Hayes and the boys were picking out a movie. Alex walked out into the main room, just in time to see Amelia and Link come in. Amelia was carrying Scout and Link had Asher as the boys held hands.
“Did you two steal an extra baby?” Meredith asked in delight as she walked over and put her hand on Asher’s back as he smiled at her.
“No,” Link said and he and Amelia paused. “These two threw a fit when we tried to separate them, so Jo said we could take him up and she’ll come to collect him later.”
“Well that’s not a problem, is it Asher?” Meredith said with a smile as she helped Link and Amelia put the boys down in their room.
Alex smiled as he watched Asher lay his head on Link’s shoulder, fighting sleep as they disappeared into the room. He settled on the couch next to Zola as they scanned through the movies before Meredith came over and tapped on his shoulder.
“Hey I think I forgot my purse downstairs could you please go grab it, it’s at the bar,” Meredith said with a smile as she bit her lip.
“Yeah, no problem,” Alex said, getting up as Meredith took his place next to Zola.
He quickly rushed downstairs and went over to the bar to ask the bartender if he had Meredith’s purse. The bartender nodded and handed him the blue clutch that Meredith had and Alex took a second to look around the room before he went back up. The party was still in full swing and quite a few couples including Maggie and Winston were still dancing.
As he looked around again he caught sight of Jo as she sat at a table sipping the last of her wine and people watching like he was. All night he had been trying not to stare at her, but he couldn’t help the way his eyes were drawn to her. Jo had even caught his eyes halfway through the reception and smiled at him, which only encouraged him. Alex blamed his staring on the alcohol and the fact that the twins were down for the night in the hotel room upstairs. Jo was the most beautiful woman in the room, although he would never say that aloud, lest he offend Maggie.
She just looked so gorgeous in that little black dress. Alex was reminded of the way she looked at Bailey’s wedding all those years ago. She always wore black to weddings. It was a simple neutral color that fitted her so well. The short dress hugged to her hips with an open back and v-neck that allowed for ample cleavage. Her brown hair fell in loose curls and her dark mascara and eyeliner made her brown eyes pop.
He couldn’t help but imagine what Jo looked like without her dress on. It had been a full year since they had slept together and lord knows that his body had changed. Alex felt older, there were wrinkles around his eyes and more gray hairs on his head and beard, but Jo was still the same beautiful woman that he remembered.
Jo caught him staring and Alex took in a breath as she held his gaze. Ever since things had become more amicable between them, the two of them had exchanged lust filled looks. It was only a matter of time before the heat between them reached a boiling point. As she looked over at him, she had hot and heavy eyes. It was the same way they used to stare at each other across the halls of the hospital. That look of lust sent them to the nearest room with a lock so they could tear each other’s clothes off. His body craved her. Alex missed her, more than anything, but he decided to stay where he was and see what Jo would do. He wanted things to be on her terms.
Jo licked her lips, they were wet and swollen and he could almost taste her lips on his tongue. Something made her bold and she walked over to him. She took a step towards him, and then another. The closer she got the more he could remember the way her hair felt as he ran his fingers through it. He remembered how his scruff felt against her soft skin and the way her lips lingered on his neck. He remembered the way his hands held her waist and how her arms wrapped around his neck. He missed the weight and the warmth of her body on top of him.
Jo took another step forward until they were only inches apart and he inhaled the sweet scent of her perfume. It was still the same one that he had gotten for her last minute on their first anniversary, but she had loved it. Since then, it had become her signature scent. Alex was surprised she still used it, but then again he still wore the same cologne that she always bought for him.
Jo stared into his eyes as they stood only inches apart from each other. They were so close, yet so far away. Alex rubbed his hands on his suit pants in a desperate attempt to keep them from her waist. He waited for her to make the first move. If anything was going to happen between them, he wanted Jo to decide what it was.
Jo put her hands on his shoulders, running them up to his neck and tilting her head before she moved to trace her fingers down his chest. The ache in his soul that he had for her was like a pain in his chest that had been torturing him from the moment he stepped on the plane to leave Seattle. A piece of him was missing, but the second she touched him he felt whole again.
Alex thought she would kiss him then, but instead, Jo grabbed his tie and pulled him out of the reception hall. He followed her like a lovesick puppy. Alex knew he had a stupid infatuated smile on his face as he jogged to keep up with her. His eyes were glued to the open back of her dress and he put a hand on her back, feeling her bare skin under his hand as he moved to walk next to her.
As soon as they were out in the hall Jo let go and pushed him up against the wall. Her hands are on his face, but for a second Jo just stared at him. Her brown eyes were wide and so full of love and lust, but she hesitated for a moment. All Alex could do was watch her and wait. Then, she tilted her head, closed her eyes, and slowly brought her lips forward as she kissed him. At first, it was just a peck, as if she was testing the waters, but then her lips met his in a frenzy. It was desperate and full of lust, and Alex loved it.
It was the kiss that he had been longing for since he got back. It took a second for him to react, but then he realized that it wasn’t a dream. He closed his eyes and leaned into her touch. It was the kiss Jo used to give him when she wanted him to make love to her all night long. She couldn’t seem to get enough of his lips and she just kept kissing him over and over. They would only pull back to breathe before they dived back in.
The moment their lips touched Alex found himself falling down the rabbit hole and into her love. Jo wrapped her arms around his neck just like she used too and Alex put his hand on her waist and pulled her close. Her body still felt the same, so soft and warm as his fingers brushed against the bare skin of her back. Jo melted into their kiss and Alex moaned as he tasted her lips. She tasted like the lipstick that she always wore for special occasions and the Chardonnay that she had been drinking.
Their hands seemed desperate to touch each other and to relearn each other’s bodies. Her body was still so much the same and yet so new to him. Alex trailed his hands up to tangle in her hair as they kissed before he moved them back to her shoulders. Alex moved down around to her chest as Jo pushed herself into his hands. Jo moved her hands down to his chest as well, undoing the buttons on his dress shirt. Her fingers seemed desperate for his bare skin and the second she touched his chest, she sighed into his lips.
Jo pulled back suddenly and Alex looked into Jo’s eyes, they were filled with lust. Her pupils were blown so wide he could barely see the honey brown of her irises. Jo’s face was flushed and the red blush continued down her neck. Her hair was a wild mess from where his fingers were tangled in it. He figured he didn’t look any better and he could tell his hair was sticking out and his shirt was undone from where her fingers were still on his chest.
They heard laughing coming from inside the hall and Alex looked around the hallway. They were alone, but just behind the door, they could hear the other people talking at the reception. Now that it was later in the evening, there was bound to be more people headed their way. Besides, Alex didn’t want his first time with Jo in over a year to be in the hallway of a hotel. He wanted to lay her down on a bed and see her body and all its glory before he worshiped her.
“My room is empty. Asher’s upstairs with Link and Amelia,” Jo said as she dug her fingers into his lapel.
“Wait, Jo are you sure?” Alex said staring into her eyes and seeing her blown pupils. He knew she had been drinking and he had too, but he wanted to be sure.
“I’m more sure of doing this than I was kissing you the first time,” Jo said looking into his eyes as her lust had given way to a soft gaze.
“The twins are asleep with Meredith’s kids in our shared suite,” Alex said, still staring into Jo’s eyes.
The fire lit between them again and Jo nodded with a smirk as she pulled him away with her. Instead of just letting her drag him along, Alex grabbed her hips and walked beside her. As they headed towards the elevators, Jo giggled as he leaned in to nip at her earlobe. They kissed the entire way to her hotel room and Jo kept fumbling with her key card as Alex held her hips against his and kissed her neck.
Jo’s room was a simple one bed hotel room, but Alex couldn’t tell you anything more about it as they went straight to the bed. Alex closed his eyes as he kissed Jo, she pushed him backward until his legs hit the mattress and she pushed him back as he fell. Alex pulled Jo down with him, his arms wrapped around her waist, and his fingers digging into the skin of her back. Then Jo pulled away, she leaned back and stood up as he got up on his elbows to watch her. They both stared at each other for a moment and Alex was still breathing heavily from their kissing and their run up to the hotel room.
As they continued to stare at each other for a moment he wondered if she would ask him to leave. Alex sat up and folded his hands as he looked at her. Jo took a single step forward in between his legs and put her hands on his neck. She held his head and Alex’s hands went to her hips, gently holding her. Jo tilted her head to the side as she leaned down, but she didn’t kiss him just yet. Instead, she stared into his eyes as if they held all of the answers in the world. In reality, Alex didn’t know anything other than that he was sitting there in her hotel room and she had a hesitant look across her face.
“I slept with Jackson,” Jo admitted and Alex’s head shot up as he looked at her. Jo looked down at her hands and she chewed on her lip before she continued. “It was after the divorce when I was still waiting to get approved to be a foster parent. I was trying to figure out how to be single again and I didn’t know how to have sex with anyone who wasn’t you, so I asked Jackson to help me. It was only supposed to be a one-time thing, but we ended up being friends-with-benefits for a few months. However, I haven’t slept with anyone since, well since you got back.”
“That’s good,” Alex just nodded, he wasn’t sure what to think about it, but he was okay with it. “I’m glad he was there for you.”
Jo let out a full laugh as she placed her hands on his shoulders. “You’re glad?”
“What?” Alex said he wasn’t sure how to react to the news that Jo had sex with someone else, but he didn’t expect Jo to laugh either.
“I don’t know,” Jo said, as she continued to giggle. “I guess it’s just weird. You and I were together for eight years. Other than that time with Schmitt, I have only been with you for eight years. And then I tell you I've been with someone else and then I don't know, I thought you'd be jealous or mad.”
“I slept with Izzie so I'm not really in a position to judge you,” Alex blurted out as Jo suddenly grew quiet. He looked down at his hands on her waist because he couldn’t bear to see the look of betrayal that would be across her face, but e couldn’t do this without her knowing. “She kissed me before the divorce was finalized, but we didn’t start sleeping together until I got word that you had filed the divorce papers. I lied in the letter, I didn’t leave you because I loved Izzie, I didn’t love her at all. I thought I could, but I didn’t, but she was there and she wanted me and we were trying to be a family and I don’t know, it was stupid. We slept together for a while until the pandemic started, but we haven’t slept together since then.”
Looking back, Alex wasn’t even sure why he had tried to be with Izzie at all. He thought he did it because they were trying to be a family and make things work between them, but things quickly fizzled out. He wasn’t in love with her. Izzie wasn’t Jo, he didn’t love her like he loved Jo, like he lusted for Jo. Alex was in love with Jo and he had been for the past nine years. He loved her because Jo didn’t try to mold him into a good man or the perfect father, she loved him just as he was. Jo made him feel secure and loved more than anyone else and Alex wanted Jo now because he loved her.
“When I read your letter, I figured you were already sleeping with her. So I’m glad it didn’t start until after our divorce. I hate that you were with Izzie and that you cheated on me, by kissing her,” Jo said running her hands up to hold his face and tilted his head up to look at her. “But I forgive you, Alex, and I’m ready to start over with you.”
“If it makes you feel better, I pretty much broke down when she kissed me and the first time we had sex,” Alex said, mortified as he remembered how he had burst into tears as he realized what he was actually doing and how much he missed Jo.
“Oh God, I did the same thing,” Jo said, putting her hand over her mouth. “I pretty much snotted in Jackson’s mouth as we started making out and then I cried on his couch for the rest of the night.”
“You did?” Alex asked with a little laugh, relieved that he wasn’t the only one who had trouble moving on.
“Yes I just, I thought I was ready, but I wasn’t and the second he didn’t kiss me like you did I just cried,” Jo said, shaking her head.
“Izzie didn’t hold me like you did. She didn’t wrap her arms around my neck like you did,” Alex said as he pulled her close and Jo wrapped her arms around his neck the way she always did.
“Like that?”
“Yes,” Alex whispered and sighed into her touch as she leaned in to almost kiss him. “Jo, are you sure you want to have sex with me?”
Jo looked up from his lips to his eyes and glanced at him with more clarity. She suddenly softened with a smile and closed her eyes as she leaned down and finally whispered to him. “Yes.”
……………………………………………………………………
They laid together as they recovered from their tryst. Jo laid her cheeks on his chest as Alex wrapped his arms around her. He ran his fingers through her hair, as he pulled it to the side, lest it get trapped between their sweaty bodies. Jo seemed to relax and almost melted into his arms. They let themselves lay together for a little while as their hearts slowed down and their breathing even out. Alex looked down at Jo in his arms once again as she closed her eyes she seemed completely content. She must have felt his eyes as she picked up her head and smiled at him before he tilted her chin up to kiss her again.
However, they couldn’t lay there forever and fall asleep in each other’s arms like they used to. Alex got up and started the cleanup, he got a warm rag and brought it over to her. In the past when Jo tried to walk right after, she would stumble around like a baby deer, and as cute as it was, he’d rather let her rest. He went into the bathroom and got cleaned up and washed his hands before he walked back over to her.
Jo was still lying in bed and she gave him a lazy smile when she caught his eyes and Alex couldn’t help but stare at her. He got back in bed and crawled over to her as he laid down next to her. Alex looked down at Jo next to him as she smiled and he reached out to pick up her hand. He pulled it up to kiss her palm, he couldn’t help the way his lips needed to be on her skin. The touch of affection was warmly received as Jo hummed and rolled over to cuddle against his chest, putting one leg over his legs.
“I missed you so much, every night I slept without you in Kansas I just tossed and turned,” Alex said as he put one arm around her shoulders and held her close.
Jo laid her head on his chest as her fingers danced across his skin. “I didn’t sleep in our bed for a month after you left. I just slept on the couch, because although it still held memories of you, the bed was just too big and empty. I missed you so much, Alex.”
Alex leaned in and kissed her again before he pulled back and let himself hover only inches away from her lips. “I won’t go anywhere if you don’t want me to.”
Jo closed her eyes and took a deep breath as she pulled away to sit up. “I want you back in my bed and I want to love you, Alex, I do, but.”
It was a desperate whisper that flowed from Jo’s lips, and it seemed like she truly wanted to be with him again.
“But you don’t trust me,” Alex said, as he laid back and watched her close her eyes and nod. “If you let me, I can be a man you can trust to love you and not abandon you. I made that mistake once and I won’t do it again. I want the opportunity to prove that to you and earn back your trust.”
“It’s just that, we had just gotten married again, we were trying for a baby and you just left. I get why you did it, but it was so easy for you,” Jo said, the painful expression across her face was one that grabbed his heart and squeezed it. “I love you, and I want to trust you again, but I don’t know how, at least not yet.”
Alex nodded as he took in her words. “Not yet, that’s not never?”
Jo looked back at him, from where she was fidgeting with her fingers. “Not never.”
“Can we try dating or can I at least see you regularly?” Alex asked, tilting his head as he looked into her eyes. “I love you, Jo, and I want the chance to love you, if you’ll let me.”
Jo looked away, staring at the abstract painting on the wall. Alex watched as her shoulders rose and fell as she took a deep breath before looking back at him with a nod.
“Okay.”
Out of everything that Jo had ever done for him, this was the one thing that surprised him the most. After everything he put her through she was willing to let him back into her life. Jo laid back down and put her hands around his neck as she pulled him in to kiss her. Alex happily kissed her lips again. He never wanted to stop kissing her, but she pulled away.
“But that’s going to start with us taking things slow. We can still sleep together, but you need to go back to your own room tonight,” Jo said, with a smile as she sat up and got out of bed.
“You’re right, we need to do this right and take things slow,” Alex said, with a nod as he got up as well. “It’s not just us anymore we have kids. You have your son and I have my twins. We need to make sure that they’re comfortable with us being together too.”
Jo smiled and Alex dipped his head as he smiled too. She did walk around like a baby deer as she grabbed a pair of sweats from her suitcase. Alex slowly gathered his boxers and the pieces of his suit. His eyes lingered on her as he watched Jo as she walked around and got dressed. Alex smiled to himself knowing that this wasn’t the last time he would get to see her.
“Speaking of the children,” Jo said as she pulled her hair out of the collar of the sweatshirt she pulled on. “I should go get Asher, he’s not used to being away from me overnight and I’m sure your kids miss you too.”
“Yeah, the twins are slowly getting used to Meredith and everyone else but I don’t think they’d be comfortable if they woke up without me there.” Alex nodded as he buttoned up his shirt again.
The two of them shared a smile, before Jo disappeared into the bathroom and he finished getting dressed. They were parents now and it was strange, but it came so naturally to them. There was still a hint of regret that they weren’t parenting together, but perhaps that could change. He glanced at his reflection in the mirror and he still looked a little disheveled. Jo came out of the bathroom and smiled as she reached up to run her still wet fingers through his hair. The water smoothed away the tufts of hair she had made stick up earlier and the gesture made Alex smile. It was so easy and natural for her to do. It made him forget that she hadn’t fixed his hair in a year.
Alex grabbed Meredith’s clutch and walked towards the door before looking back at Jo who had grabbed a baby blanket and had followed him to the entryway. Suddenly they both realized they were going to the exact same room, at the exact same time. All of their friends would know they had slept together especially considering that Alex promised he would only be a few minutes, but instead more than an hour had passed.
“Why don’t I go up ahead of you and then you can come in a few minutes. I love Meredith, but I think she’d never let it go if she found out we’d slept together,” Alex said as he rubbed the back of his neck.
Meredith hadn’t always been Jo’s number one fan, but a year before their wedding that changed. Ever since Alex returned to Seattle, she had been urging him to make things right with Jo. And by make things right, she hinted that they should get back together. Her not-so-subtle hints were something Alex had been ignoring in favor of waiting for Jo to decide how she wanted to interact with him. He would probably never hear the end of it if Meredith knew she was right.
“Yeah, that’s probably for the best and I should warm up a bottle for Asher. He can’t go back down without it,” Jo said with a nod as she went back to the kitchenette and pulled out a bottle and formula.
“Yeah, the baby days,” Alex said, with a smile as he watched Jo make the bottle.
Jo looked up and caught his eye before she returned his smile with a soft smile of her own. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry you never got that with the twins.”
“You’re not the one who has to apologize for that Jo,” Alex said and he reached out and filled up the bottle with water while Jo measured out the formula. “Besides, I’m happy that I’m in their lives now.”
“Yeah, I watched you with them this evening. I remember you let Eli eat the rest of your baked potato when I know it’s your favorite and you danced with Alexis as she stood on your toes. You looked so happy with your kids and I was so happy that you got the chance to be in their lives.”
“I saw you with Asher too. You were holding him as you swayed back and forth and danced with him. You always have such a wonderful smile when you’re looking at him and I’m glad you have a family too, Jo.”
Jo was standing there, next to him at the kitchenette with a baby blanket over her shoulder, shaking the bottle in her hand as she prepped the bottle warmer. It was everything Alex had ever envisioned when he imagined what it would have been like to have a baby with Jo. Seeing her with her baby was all of those dreams come true, the one piece that was missing was him. He wanted Jo in his life and in his kid’s lives too, he wanted to meet Asher as well and he wanted the five of them to be a family.
Alex wanted to do what he should have done from the beginning and be a father to Alexis and Eli with Jo by his side. He wanted Alexis and Eli to get to know Jo, and for her to be a part of their lives. He wanted to meet Asher and be a part of his life too. He wanted them to be a family.
Alex wanted to go to the park with Jo and the kids. He wanted to sit in the sandbox and build sandcastles with Asher and Jo would push Eli on the swings while Alexis moved between the two of them, never able to decide where she wanted to be. He wanted waffle Sundays with Jo, both of them in their pajamas as he made the waffles and she made them coffee and chocolate milk for the kids. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and kiss her in their home with their children around them. He wanted his life with Jo and he knew that it wouldn’t happen in an instant, but he knew where to start.
“Do you want to like, go out Saturday or something?” Alex asked fumbling over his words, he was so nervous because he wanted this so bad.
“Yeah, I’d like that,” Jo said, a light blush appearing across her cheeks as she looked down and focused on putting the bottle in the warmer.
“Good, I’ll talk to you Monday and we can schedule something,” Alex said with a nod as he tried to keep his excitement inside, but he just couldn’t hide the smile that spread across his face
“Yeah, sounds good,” Jo agreed, sharing his smile as she finally looked up at him.
Alex couldn’t help how he was already head over heels in love with her again. He had always been in love with her and he was so happy to have the chance to love her again.
Alex went up to the hotel room and wasn’t surprised when Zola snapped at him for taking so long, but Meredith just gave him a knowing smile, especially when Jo came up a few minutes later to get Asher. However, neither she nor anyone else said anything about his disappearance.
Alex watched her cradle the sleepy baby in her arms and get him settled with the bottle. He loved watching Jo with Asher. Sometimes he’d find himself walking by the daycare at lunchtime, just to try and catch a glimpse of them. Just before she left Jo caught his eye and smiled at him. Alex couldn’t hide the smile that stretched across his face visible for everyone to see.
He was so grateful that Jo was even given him the chance to see her again and he was over the moon about what happened tonight. She had kissed him, they had slept together, and she was going to let him date her. Alex knew that it was going to take a lot to rebuild their relationship. But, he was determined to do everything he could to prove to Jo that he was worthy of her trust.
……………………………………………………………………
The vomit never seemed to end as Jo leaned over the toilet and produced the bile that was left in her stomach. She had been feeling nauseous and had thrown up a few times in the past few days, but she seemed to get the worst of it today. This morning she had woken up and had to make a mad dash for the toilet down the hall and she hadn’t stopped throwing up since. Suddenly she heard Asher cry and tried to get up, but she was dizzy and nauseous and she had to sit back down before she dry heaved again.
“Aunt Jo, Asher’s crying,” Zola said as she came into the bathroom, but lingered by the door, hesitant to get near her.
“I know Zola, can you get your om please, and ask her to pick up Asher for me?” Jo said, leaning against the toilet bowl.
“Okay,” Zola said quickly leaving the bathroom.
Jo listened to Zola knock on Meredith’s door. Meredith got up and Jo let out a sigh as Meredith got Asher and his cries stopped. Jo closed her eyes and laid her head on her arm.
“Hey Zola said you were puking your guts up and you look pretty disgusting,” Meredith said as she appeared in the doorway with Asher on her hip.
Jo just groaned and looked up at Meredith. She hated being sick, especially knowing that it wouldn’t end anytime soon, but at least it seemed to end for now.
“Mama,” Asher said, leaning out to her.
Jo smiled and reached out for him as Meredith brought him over. However, before Meredith could even put him in her arms she got a whiff of his dirty diaper and leaned over to dry heave in the toilet. Asher fussed when Meredith didn’t put him in Jo’s arms and Meredith tried to settle him. Jo pulled back after she finished heaving, but knew she couldn’t take him right now.
“Can you change him and get him settled,” Jo asked as she sat back against the wall. “I’ll be fine soon, I just need a minute.”
“Yeah of course, do you want some meds or something? Whatever you’ve got it looks pretty bad. Is Asher sick too because if not I’ll take him to the daycare for you so you can stay home and rest?” Meredith offered soothing Asher as he fussed still leaning out to Jo.
“I don’t need a day to rest, I just need a few minutes,” Jo said, she knew from how things have been the past few days that once she got her stomach settled she would be fine, until sometime around lunch.
Jo cursed the universe for getting her into this position. Of all the crazy and stupid, things she had ever done this had to be the top one. She was frustrated and nervous and excited all at the same time. She loved Alex, but this was something else. They had been dating for the past month and a half and he was working to rebuild her trust. They were taking it slow, but things were about to go from 0 to 60 in an instant. They hadn’t even met each other’s kids yet and Jo wasn’t sure about her place in his life.
“Jo if you’re sick it’s no big deal, you can take a day to rest,” Meredith said, setting her with a look. “I’m pretty sure all of your patients would appreciate you not getting them and their newborns sick.”
“I’m not sick,” Jo insisted, looking over at Meredith. She wasn’t sure about telling her, but it would all come out eventually and she needed Meredith’s help. Especially as, regardless of how she and Alex were still working things out, she had decided to keep it. “I’m pregnant and Alex is the father.”
Jo watched as Meredith’s jaw dropped in shock. It was pretty much the same expression Jo had on her face when she got her blood work back a few days ago. Alex Karev had gotten her pregnant and now Jo was having a baby with her ex-husband.

AN: I promised a soft epilogue and I do intend to make good on that, but I couldn't resist the urge to add another baby to this. I can promise it will go over well and there will be a happy ending.

“Hey,” Jo said, bouncing up to the nurse’s station like a little ball of sunshine. Her eyes were as bright as the late March sun and he could tell that she was smiling under her mask. Jo instantly brightened his day as she put her arm around his neck, leaning in for a quick masked kiss.
“Hey, what are you doing here?” Alex asked, smiling as Jo held up a takeout bag from their favorite Thai restaurant.
“I brought you lunch and I thought we could eat it together,” Jo said, grabbing his hand and pulling him away.
“Okay, any particular reason why?” Alex asked, noting that Jo's eyes were just a little too bright and that she was a little too eager to whisk him away to an on-call room. She closed the door behind them and they took off their masks.
“Okay, so don't be mad, but the nurses called down and said that you were grumpy,” Jo said, frowning as Alex curled his upper lip, adopting his grumpy look as he stopped in front of her. “Also I may or may not have promised Link and Amelia that we would babysit Scout for the weekend.”
“Well, you can tell Janet that I wouldn't be so grumpy if… Wait, did you say that we were babysitting for the weekend?”
Jo just smiled at him as he set her with a glare. Alex tried his hardest to stay mad at her, but it was almost impossible, especially with that smile. He was happy to see her. They didn't get much time together with the pandemic and her fellowship. Although they had tried to make more time for each other and Reeses since they got back from their Christmas vacation in Leavenworth, the pandemic still put a strain on their relationship. Her lunch visits were the best part of his day, but he also knew that if he let her, she'd sign them up for babysitting every weekend. Leaving them little time to make a baby of their own.
“Okay, I know I should have asked first, I'm sorry,” Jo said faltering in her innocent act as her shoulders slumped. “It’s just that Link talked to me yesterday and he wants to take Amelia to a hotel up north so she can speak at this virtual Neuro conference. It’s this weekend and it was just supposed to be the two of them. They had everything lined up but Meredith got pulled on this big case. So I offered to take him, and I figured it would be good practice for us.”
“We don't need practice though,” Alex said, pulling her in and putting his arm around her waist as she held onto the collar of his scrubs. “I'm a Peds surgeon and your training to be an OB/GYN and a Maternal-Fetal surgeon, together we've taken care of thousands of babies. Besides we babysit for them all the time.”
“I know, but we’ve never had one of the kids stay with us for more than a few hours. Besides you know how much I love Scout and it's just so hard to say no to that little face,” Jo said as she tilted her head and pouted.
“You're never going to be able to say no to our kids will you?” Alex said, leaning in to kiss her forehead.
“Oh please, like you'll be able to say no to them either,” Jo said with a smile and nudged his shoulder.
“Well I guess our kids will just be spoiled brats,” Alex said, with a smirk.
“Nah, we'll figure it out by the time they're two or so,” Jo said, staring off as if she was imagining it.
Alex smiled as he watched Jo sigh, before leaning into him and putting her head on his shoulder. He loved imagining their future together, especially with a baby. Sometimes he would sneak up to the maternity ward and see her holding a baby she delivered. He could imagine her holding their baby and he couldn’t wait to make it happen.
“How have you been feeling?” Alex asked, pressing a kiss to her cheek.
She had been throwing up late last night, but was feeling better that morning and didn't want to miss work. So far Meredith had said that she'd been doing fine, but had complained of a headache earlier, and he worried about her.
“Ugh, did Meredith tattle on me again,” Jo sighed and stepped out of his arms.
“Meredith didn't say anything,” Alex said, although Jo raised an eyebrow at him. “Okay, she might have said that you had a headache.”
Jo made a face and crossed her arms. “It was just a little headache. I didn't get my coffee this morning because one of the new interns ran into me and spilled it.”
“Okay,” Alex said, with a nod. He didn't want to fight with her, especially on this, he just wanted to sit down and enjoy lunch with his wife. “So what time do we pick up Scout?”
“I'll bring him home with me at the end of the day and Lincoln and Amelia will be back on Sunday sometime around dinner,” Jo said, her cheerful disposition returning with a smile.
“I guess that leaves me to walk Reeses and make dinner,” Alex said, sitting down and pulling out the food.
“Do you mind?” Jo asked, biting her lip.
“And let Scout eat your cooking?” Alex teased her as Jo swatted at his arm. “No, I don’t mind.”
“Good,” Jo smiled as she sauntered over to him and took the fork out of his hand before sitting in his lap. “Because I am very thankful for your help.”
“Oh yeah?” Alex smiled as he put his hand on Jo's hips, pulling out her blouse from where it was tucked into her jeans.
“Yeah,” Jo said, dipping her head down to kiss him. Alex melted into her kiss as Jo moaned and tilted her head. He got lost in her lips as Jo showed him just how thankful she was.
……………………………………………………………………
Jo struggled to reach the top of the stairs with Scout and all of his things, he was in the car seat, but there was the pack and play, a suitcase full of clothes and toys, and the diaper bag as well. For some reason, Jo thought she could get it all in one trip, but struggled to reach the top of the stairs. She stopped in front of the door and gently set the car seat down, before dropping everything else.
After a moment, Jo caught her breath and knocked on the door before she looked down at her little godson. She picked up the car seat with one arm as Scout smiled up at her, grabbing his toes and squealing in excitement. After Meredith recovered from COVID, Amelia and Link had moved out of the house and to a place up the street. Since then the Shepherd-Lincoln and Karev families had been co-quarantining together. Jo loved every minute she got with Scout and leaned down to tickle his toes.
The door to the loft opened to reveal Alex and Reeses, who eagerly jumped around them and barked. Alex made Reeses sit and Jo leaned down to rub his head as he licked her hand.
Then she straightened up and smiled, leaning in to greet Alex with a kiss. “Hey.”
“Hi,” Alex said, putting a hand on her waist, before looking down at Scout, He tickled his toes as well and watched as the eleven-month-old smiled and babbled.
Jo took Scout, leaving everything else and walked into the loft. Reeses bounded around her feet as she made a beeline for the couch. Alex had picked up Reeses’ toys and pushed back the coffee table like they always did when they had Scout.
“You couldn't have made two trips?” Alex asked, struggling to bring everything into the loft.
“Well that's why I have a big strong husband, to help me bring stuff in,” Jo laughed as she looked over at him.
Alex grunted as he put the pack and play over by their bed, like they always did, and put away the rest of Scout’s stuff. While Jo and the boys played on the rug. Jo sat on the blanket and pulled Scout out of the car seat to sit in her lap. Reeses immediately started to play with Scout wagging his tale a mile a minute. Jo grabbed Reeses’ chew toy and handed it to Scout and he waved it around as Reeses chased after it. The two of them were best friends and Jo loved watching them play.
“Seriously why did Amelia give us all this stuff?” Alex complained as he set the pack and play up. “It's not like we don't have things for him here. We do have him almost every week.”
“I think they're just stressed about leaving him for a whole weekend,” Jo said, smiling at Scout before picking him up to see if he would stand up and hang onto the side of the couch. “But we're going to have lots of fun aren't we Scout.”
Scout smiled and babbled at Jo before Reeses caught his attention. Scout fell down to sit on the rug and reached out to grab the rope toy away from Reeses, suddenly finding it more interesting than his Auntie. Jo grabbed the box of baby toys they kept in the basket under the coffee table and pulled out a mirror and a rattle along with a couple of block toys.
Alex finished putting away Scout’s stuff and came to sit next to her, putting his arm around her waist as they both played with Scout. They each tried to grab his attention with the toys and see if he would crawl over to whatever they were holding. Although Scout wasn’t walking yet, he would get up and hang on to the side of the furniture, and Link swore that Scout would walk any day now. Jo and Alex always had to resist the urge to test Scout's development every time they had him. They were doctors, it was what they did, but Scout was always on track for development and they were always so excited to see what he learned.
“What's the plan for dinner?” Jo asked, taking her eyes off of Scout as she leaned into Alex and laid her head on his shoulder.
“I was thinking something simple, maybe that lemon pasta dish you like, or not?” Alex said as Jo made a face at the thought of the lemon pasta and grabbed her stomach.
Jo fought off the nausea as she closed her eyes and put her arm around Alex’s neck. He moved to hug her closer and rubbed his hand up and down her back. He always held her when she was sick even if she puked, he would carry her to the toilet and braid her hair. Not even Link would do that for her. When she got sick in college, Link would just stand in the doorway and toss her a water bottle. Alex though, he would hold her forever if he could and Jo would let him. Alex’s arms were safe and comforting.
“How about baked mac and cheese with broccoli?” Alex asked as he trailed his fingers down her spine. It was her favorite and he knew she wouldn't refuse unless she was truly sick.
Alex looked down at Scout who smiled as he squealed, stealing the toy from Reeses who whined. When Jo didn't respond and Alex stilled at his fingers at the base of her spine. He couldn't see her face from where her head was laying on his chest, so he reached out to grab the mirror next to Scout and tilted it to see her face. Jo was fast asleep, her lips parted as she slept. He smiled and put the mirror on the couch as he leaned down to kiss her forehead.
Alex moved ever so slightly to put an arm under her legs and moved the other one around her shoulders to pick her up. He carried her over to the bed and laid her down, pulling the blanket over her and grabbed a bowl from the kitchen to put on the nightstand. Alex looked back at Scout and Reeses who were happily chewing on the blocks and walked over to pick up the baby.
“I guess it's just us boys, so what do you say, Scout? Mac and cheese for you and me, and puppy chow for Reeses, yeah?” Scout squealed happily, his arms flailed around as Reeses yipped and jumped up on Alex’s leg. “That sounds like a yes.”
……………………………………………………………………
The warm sunset and the cool evening spring wind blew in through the open windows as Jo woke up from her nap. She had to drag herself up as she sat up in bed. The loft seemed empty save for Reeses sleeping next to her. The whole weekend she had gone back and forth between being sick and being fine. It was Sunday evening and she had spent the morning making waffles with Alex, and playing with Scout, but had ended up in the bathroom puking that afternoon. The vomiting had taken its toll on her body, leaving her exhausted. She had fallen asleep on the floor of the bathroom by accident and Alex must have carried her to bed, again.
As she rubbed the sleep from her eyes, she heard Alex's voice and looked over to see him reading to Scout. They both sat in the rocker they had set up in the makeshift nursery where Alex’s weights and boxing bag used to be. Jo listened for a moment as he read a medical case to Scout. She smiled as she got up and walked over to them before leaning against the pillar as she watched them. Scout was asleep in Alex’s arms, as his soft voice filled the room like the beams of sun coming in through the window.
Alex smiled up at her as he finished reading and put the case study on the nightstand, before transferring Scout into the pack and play next to him. Alex held out his arms to her and welcomed Jo in as she sat on his lap and rested her head on his shoulders.
“How are you feeling?”
“Exhausted, even though I just took a nap.”
Alex sighed and pressed a kiss to Jo's forehead. “And how's your stomach?”
“Fine for now, but it keeps flip flopping between nausea and heartburn,” Jo huffed as she pulled at his shirt. “Did Link and Amelia call?”
“Yeah, they video chatted with Scout for a little while,” Alex said, kissing her forehead. “They had one last talk they wanted to watch, but they should be here pretty soon. They seem to have enjoyed the conference though.”
“You're good at this,” Jo said smiling over at Scout. Since she hadn't been feeling well, Alex had taken on the majority of Scout's care.
“I am a seasoned ped’s doctor,” Alex said with a wide smile as she turned to look up at him. “And like you said it gives us a good idea of what it’ll be like when we have a baby of our own.”
Jo smiled as Alex mirrored her and leaned down to kiss her again. After he pulled back from the kiss the nausea came back and Jo put a hand on her stomach, leaning away from him just in case. Alex put his hands around her and rubbed up and down her back. It passed as quickly as it came and Jo put her head back on his shoulder.
“Alex, could you go to the drugstore for me?”
“Yeah, of course,” Alex nodded as he brushed her hair out of her face from where it had fallen out of her braid. “Do you want me to get the pink stuff or the red stuff? I know you don't like the liquid kind, but let’s try it and see how it goes.”
Jo just bit her lip and fiddled with Alex’s sweater again before looking back up at him. “I’m not sure that’s what I need.”
……………………………………………………………………
Alex smiled under his mask as he quickly walked down the aisles of the drugstore despite how out of place he felt shopping in this section. When he reached the correct section for the pregnancy tests he paused as he looked at all of the various choices in front of him. There were so many different products, all offering different versions of the same thing, but he had no idea where to start. At the hospital, there was one test that was plain and simple, here there were hundreds. The bright white lights made everything seem so fake and Alex picked up one then set it back, questioning his decision.
He briefly considered calling Jo, she had already told him exactly which one to buy, but he didn't want to admit that he forgot. He could call Meredith, she knew more about this than he did, but he didn’t want to tell her yet. He looked around the near empty store and caught the eye of a middle-aged manager.
She greeted Alex with soft eyes and walked over to him. “How can I help you?”
“Umm,” Alex's voice escaped him and he felt pretty dumb as he played with his ring and just looked back to the display of products. “My wife’s pregnant, well we think she’s pregnant but we don't have any tests at home so.”
The manager just nodded at him with a knowing smile. “Don't worry most husbands are clueless in this department, but it's always nice to see a man shopping for his wife. This pack of tests is quite reliable and it’s always best to have more than one.”
“Thank you,” Alex said, letting out a breath as his shoulders eased. He let the manager lead him up to the front and pay for it. Once he got back into the car his smile returned as his excitement and anticipation grew the closer he got to the loft.
-----------------------
Jo swayed back and forth with Scout in her arm as she stood by the window and watched the city light up as the lingering light from the sun fell away. She smiled and looked down at the baby in her arms. As he slept she traced her finger from his forehead down and up his little nose. This could be her life someday Jo thought as she leaned forward to kiss his head.
She heard a car pull up and looked down to see Alex pull into the parking lot. Reeses got up from the bed and raced over to the door, barking as Jo put Scout down in the pack and play. She scooped up Reeses and went back to the window as they watched Alex run into the building and she laughed at his mad dash inside. Jo set Reeses back down as he went to wait by the door and reached for her water bottle.
She took a sip but found it hard to keep the water down. She had filled up her water bottle before Alex left and had drank too much. It didn't help that she was still nauseated and her anxiety seemed to churn her stomach in a bad combination. Jo walked over to the bathroom, figuring she'd need to be in there anyway to take the test, and sat down against the shower. She closed her eyes and willed the water to stay in her stomach, but it was a losing game and she quickly scrambled over to the toilet, throwing up water and bile.
Once she was done she leaned against the wall and heard Alex moving around in the loft as he greeted Reeses. She looked up from the toilet bowl, as he opened the door and set the bag on the counter. Alex grabbed a cup, filling it with water, and handed it to her. At this point, she hated to even think about putting water in her mouth, but Jo took it anyway and rinsed out her mouth, before closing the lid to the toilet and flushing it.
“Did you get it?”
“I did,” Alex said, letting a smile spread on his lips as he got the box out of the bag.
He opened it and pulled out one of the packages, handing it to Jo. Despite how she felt, Jo smiled as well. It wasn’t the test she’d asked for, but let it slide as she read the instructions.
“Are you ready?” Alex asked her, seeing her eyes sparkled with excitement.
“Are you?”
Alex smiled and leaned forward to kiss her, before remembering that she had just puked and turned his head to kiss her cheek. Jo laughed and put a hand on his chest, pushing him away, but Alex stood firm. He leaned against the wall before sliding down to sit on the floor as Jo raised an eyebrow at him.
“What I’ve seen you pee before and I’m not missing a second of this.”
“Weirdo.”
“Just pee on the stick, Princess.”
Jo shook her head but ripped open the packaging. She dropped her pants and underwear kicking them over to him and Alex neatly moved them so she could step back into them when she was done. She gave Alex one last look, raising her eyebrow, but he just stayed where he was. Jo sighed and sat on the toilet before she held the stick between her legs. She held the test in the stream of pee for a few seconds and then placed it on the side of the sink as Alex set a timer.
After Jo had finished and washed her hands, she put the cap on the test and sat next to him. She leaned into his chest as Alex put an arm around her shoulders and she took a deep breath. Reeses came in through the open down and settled on Alex’s lap and they both rubbed his ears as they waited.
“I'm ready for this, and you are too, yeah?” Alex asked looking over at her.
“Yes,” Jo insisted, emphasizing it with a nod.
She had always been the one that was apprehensive about having kids. She knew that he was still worried that she was ready, but as Jo looked down at the test in her hands she knew she was ready.
They both anxiously waited for the results to appear, as Jo pressed her fingers to her lips and Alex rubbed Reeses’ ears as the puppy slept on his lap. They both wanted so badly for the test to be positive and stared at it as if they could will it into being. They had been trying since December and were waiting for her to miss a period, but so far she hadn’t and was due to get it any day now.
Scout let out a heavy sigh breaking the silence as they both turned their heads to glance out the bathroom door to watch him kick as he slept. Jo knew that Alex loved babysitting all of their friends' kids, but that he longed for a baby of his own. They had watched their friends become parents and even though they were happy to be Aunt Jo and Uncle Alex. She knew that he was ready for kids of their own and she was ready too.
“If it's positive we have to go see Carina right away. I don’t care if it’s too early,” Jo said, despite how she knew her genetic history was fine, she needed to know that their baby was okay.
“Yeah, we should get you seen and make sure everything's okay. Regardless you’ve barely kept anything down all day and you could be dehydrated,” Alex said as Jo turned to lean into him and he ran his hand up and down her back.
“God, is this what it's gonna be like all the time?” Jo moaned into his shoulder.
“No, we can get you on something to ease the nausea,” Alex said, kissing her forehead. He hated to see her like this and couldn't imagine it going on for several more weeks.
“If I'm pregnant, then I think I'm five weeks along, which makes sense, given the sudden arrival of symptoms.”
“Which means you got pregnant the week of Zola and Bailey's spring break when we were helping Mer with the kids.”
“Oh my God, what if our baby was conceived from that quickie we had in Meredith’s bathroom?” Jo said with a laugh, putting a hand over her mouth.
“We could always just say they were conceived in an on-call room,” Alex said, joining in her laughter.
“Oh no, I don't know what is worse, a baby conceived in an on-call room or in a friend's bathroom?” Jo said as they both continued to laugh, jostling Reeses in Alex's lap.
The puppy woke up and moved off of Alex's lap and went back into the loft in search of a better place to nap. Their laughter tapered off and Jo closed her eyes as she leaned back into Alex's chest. She tried to take deep breaths as her heart pounded in her chest. The ringing of Alex's phone pulled her out of her head as she looked over at him. Alex gave her a nod and she turned over the test in her hand.
It was negative. Jo wasn't pregnant.
Her breath came out as a heartless sob, as she put her hand over her mouth. Alex pulled her back into his chest and put his head on top of hers. “It's okay Jo. It’s okay.”
She was in shock, she shook her head and squeezed her eyes shut as Alex held her against him. She couldn't believe that it was negative. It all made sense that she would have been pregnant. Why wasn't she pregnant?
There was a knock at the door and Reeses started barking as Scout started crying. It had to be Amelia and Link, but Jo didn't think she could face them without falling into tears. She looked up at Alex and he just nodded.
“I’ll get Scout and tell them you're sick with the flu,” Alex said leaning in to place a kiss against her forehead before he got up.
Jo watched him run out into the loft yelling to Amelia and Link that he was coming and quieting Reeses. Alex picked Scout up as he calmed down in his arms and smiled at his Uncle. It was so perfect and all Jo could think about was how he should be a Dad. Jo knew that he would be the best Dad in the world and that he would always take care of their kid.
“Alex,” Jo called out to him as he looked over at her. She wants to tell him that they'll try again, that she'll be pregnant next time, that they'll have a baby soon, but all of her words died on her tongue and she just stared at him.
He gave her a sad smile and bounced Scout in his arms for a second. “It's okay Jo. You didn’t do anything wrong, okay.”
Jo took a deep breath letting his words sink in. She nodded and gave him a smile, it was okay because they could be parents another day. Alex came over and leaned down to kiss her forehead, giving her a chance to say goodbye to Scout as well before he closed the bathroom door.
……………………………………………………………………
Jo waited until she heard the front door shut to slip out of the bathroom. Reeses was asleep on the rug having tired himself out playing with Scout all weekend and it seemed that Alex wasn't far behind him. Jo smiled at Alex as he collapsed on the couch and walked over to stand in front of him. He reached out to take her hand and she let herself be pulled down into his lap. Jo sat sideways in his lap, with her back against the armrest as he wrapped his arms around her waist. She looked over at him as he closed his eyes and laid his head back.
“One weekend of babysitting got you all worn out?” Jo teased as she watched his eyes flutter open for a second as he looked over at her.
“Hey, I was the one who babysat because you have the stomach flu,” Alex said as Jo reached over to tickle his hip, making him laugh and squirm under her.
Alex captured her hands and held them above his head as he laid his head back against the couch, closing his eyes again. Jo watched him for a second and pulled her hand back from his loose grip. She reached out to put her hand on his cheek and ran her fingers over the grey hairs of his beard.
“You're not too old to do this every day, are you?” Jo whispered in his ear wondering if Alex had already fallen asleep.
“I’m not old, I’m just greying early trying to keep up with you,” Alex said, a small smile blooming on his lips as he opened his eyes to smirk at her and moved to hold her hips. “I’m only doing it if it’s our own kid and you know maybe we could try right now. If you're up for it?”
Jo smiled and leaned in to kiss him before pulling back. Alex had that devious spark in his eye and he quickly moved his hands up her back to her bra strap. Jo laughed as he kissed down her neck, but pulled away from his lips.
“Alex, wait,” Jo said in between giggles. Alex pulled back to look at her as she put a hand on his chest and shook her head. “We don't need to try for a baby.”
Jo let her words hang between them, hoping that he'd figure it out, but Alex just looked confused.
“What do you mean? I thought you wanted a baby?” Alex asked, his eyebrows coming together with a little worry line on his forehead and his lips slightly parted as he stared at her. Jo shook her head at his clueless look and laughed again.
“We don't need to try for a baby because I'm pregnant!”
“What?” Alex asked in disbelief as he looked at her with wide eyes and a slack jaw.
“I'm pregnant. It was a false negative. I took the other three and they were all positive,” Jo said, her smile so big it hurt her cheeks and she watched the excitement unfold across his face.
“We're having a baby!” Alex exclaimed as he leaned forward and peppered her face with kisses, laughing with excitement in between kisses.
He kissed her forehead, her nose, and her cheeks. He put one arm around her waist before he looked down and pulled up her t-shirt. She wasn't showing and neither of them expected her to be, but Alex still put a hand over her lower abdomen, just under the hem of her sweatpants.
“We're having a baby,” Alex breathed out, still in disbelief.
Jo smiled, happy to be in this moment with her family. They laughed and kissed until Jo got the hiccups and Alex ran to grab her cup of water. When he returned with the water, Alex sat down beside her and she leaned against him. After her hiccups disappeared, Jo’s nausea came back. Despite how hard she tried, she couldn't keep the water down and threw up within a few minutes. Much to Reeses’ delight as he tried to eat the vomit water from the bowl on the floor.
“Okay, let's head to the hospital,” Alex said, wiping her chin and taking the bowl away from Reeses before he could get it and dumped it in the toilet.
Jo sighed and wrapped the blanket around her shoulders. “Fine, but if anyone asks I have the flu. I don't want anyone knowing I'm pregnant yet.”
“Okay but if Mer asks.”
“No, we are not telling Meredith,” Jo insisted, pointing a finger at him.
“She's gonna figure it out, Jo,” Alex said holding up his hands.
“Well, she can mind her own business for once. This is between you and me,” Jo said as Reeses whined at her feet. “Okay it’s between you, me, and Reeses, but I don’t want anyone else knowing I'm pregnant. They're going to start treating me like glass and gushing over me. I see it all the time on the maternity ward. It happened with Amelia and Meredith and I want to avoid it as long as possible.”
“Everyone should be gushing over you and you should be taking it easy. It's exciting and it's already taking a lot out of you,” Alex said, coming back to sit on the coffee table across from her.
He put his hands on her knees as he smiled and tilted his head. It was that adorable look that he always gave her. He cared about her so much and sometimes it surprised her because no one cared for her the way Alex did. Even if he was overprotective of her at times.
“I want to work up until my due date. I’m halfway through my OB fellowship and I want to finish it and take my boards in May.”
“Okay.”
“And I don't want you or anybody other than Carina pulling me off of surgeries, because they think I can't handle it.”
“Okay.”
“And if I have to take time off, you have to take time off too,” Jo said, setting him with a look. “We're in this together and it wouldn’t be fair if I have to be the only one at home with the baby.”
“Jo, I promise you that I'm not going to leave you with all the childcare,” Alex insisted, leaning forward and taking a hold of her hands. “You are going to carry this baby for forty weeks and after that, I promise you that I'll take care of you and the baby so that you can rest. You won't even have to change a diaper if you don't want to.”
Jo nodded and she knew that he would keep his promise. Alex was good to her like that. She reached up and put her hand on his cheek. Alex smiled as he closed his eyes and leaned into her touch.
“You're a good man Alex Karev and you're going to be a good Dad too.”
Alex smiled and leaned up to kiss her forehead. He lingered there before Jo pulled back and stood up. He put his arm around her waist and led her into the car, grabbing her things and asking Layla across the hall to watch Reeses, before they headed to the hospital.
“So I won't have to change a single diaper?” Jo asked looking over at him as he got in the car next to her.
“Do you want to change diapers?” Alex said looking over at her with a smirk anticipating her answer.
“Nope,” Jo said as she shook her head, shutting up and looking out the window with a smile.
